I love it when a seemingly small detail like a garnish changes the whole experience. Nice one!

FIG LEAF OF
Ok ok... I know this is really similar to my last one, but it's pure coincidence. The day after I made the autumn harvest OF, I saw the fig leaf syrup recipe on IG parttimemixologist and ran back to my neighborhood tree to fetch leaves. He posted this OF a few days later and it was strikingly similar, but whatevs, it's a great spec! 😋
To me, fig leaf syrup is similar to toasted coconut or even pandan. It's a warm, nutty flavor.
- 2 dashes walnut bitters
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- ¼ oz fig leaf syrup
- 2 oz rye
Stir // strain // garnish: fig leaf coin
Method: combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, add cracked ice, and stir it down. Strain over a large rock of clear ice, and garnish with a fig leaf cut into a circle shape.
Fig leaf syrup: pick fresh, green fig tree leaves and wash them gently. Pat them dry and then toast them in the oven at 95°C/200°F for 30 minutes. Prepare a 2:1 simple syrup and place the crushed leaves in while it's hot, letting sit for 2-12 hours. Strain through a cheesecloth or paper towel, bottle it up, and store in the fridge for several weeks.

AUTUMN HARVEST OF
One of those "use the stuff in the kitchen" creations that really turned out! We have a fig tree near the house and had so many that I made a syrup. Half a bottle of merlot laying around? Syrup. I used 45% rye and even then felt an extra half slug was needed to balance out the sugar. Maybe next time just a barspoon of each. But either way the result was delicious and celebrates the tastes of autumn!
- 2 dashes walnut bitters
- ¼ oz fig syrup
- ¼ oz wine syrup
- 2½ oz rye
Stir // strain // garnish: orange peel
Method: combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, add cracked ice, and stir it down. Strain over a large rock of clear ice, express an orange peel, and garnish.

FIG 75
A fun, autumnal riff on the French 75. Figs are dropping everywhere around me and I saw this timely spec from IG highproofpreacher. Easy to batch, too. Combine all the stuff besides your sparkling wine, add 20% water, then combine with the bubbles as you serve each glass.
- 4 dashes orange bitters
- 5-6 dashes Chartreuse Vegetal
- ½ oz lemon juice
- ½ oz fig syrup
- 1½ oz cognac
- 3 oz sparkling wine
Shake // strain // float // Garnish: lemon peel
Method: set bubbles aside. Combine remaining ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a chilled coupe, top with bubbles, and garnish.

QUEEN OF DREAMS
I've posted this before, but it's too good to exclude from a Negroni series. A british friend said it was "a Negroni worthy of the Wimbledon" which seemed to be a high compliment 😂 and yes, I tend orchids at my house just to have them on hand as a garnish.
Original cocktail by Andrew Burton at the Horse Inn. The proportions are my best guess based on the mention of the White Negroni being their inspiration.
- ½ oz yuzu curaçao
- ½ oz Suze
- 1 oz rosé vermouth
- 1 oz strawberry-infused gin
Stir // strain // garnish: orchid
Method: combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice, and stir. Double strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a flower if you wish.

AMERICANO
This one is simple, refreshing, and even older than the Negroni itself! From what I read online, the Negroni started as a riff of the Americano "made in the style of Count Camillo Negroni of Fiesole."
- 1½ oz Campari
- 1½ oz rosso vermouth
- 2½ oz seltzer
Build in glass // garnish: orange peel
Method: build in glass over ice in the order listed. Your choice to stir or not before serving, depending on optics. Express orange peel over drink and place as garnish.

WELL OILED MAI TAI
I'm always late for Mai Tai day... This one is a combination of Mai Tai and Corn & Oil. Here I have tweaked the original, swapping amounts of falernum/orgeat, with a splash of seltzer added.
- ¾ oz lime juice
- ½ oz falernum
- ¼ oz orgeat
- 2 oz Barbados Blended Aged Rum ❸
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 oz seltzer
Shake // open pour // garnish: mint sprig, dehydrated pineapple, maraschino cherry
Method: combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake. Open pour with gated finish in to a glass and garnish with love.

LOVE IN IDLENESS
The opener in a series of cocktails with pandan! We cracked open a can to make some coconut ice cream at home and I turned the rest into syrup to attack my reshake list 😅
This one is originally from Brian "shakerofspirits" Maxwell but I tweaked a few things and printed my spec below. I dialed the orgeat down slightly to make room for my pandan syrup which brings its own sweetness. His original had tonic water, I dropped it completely to achieve a delicious Mai Tai style riff.
- ½ oz lime juice
- ½ oz passion fruit syrup
- ¼ oz orgeat
- ¼ oz pandan syrup
- 1½ oz Tequila blanco
Shake // open pour // garnish: orange peel
Method: Add tonic water to glass. Combine remaining ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake. Gently open pour into glass and garnish with orange twist.

PALABRA CALIENTE
- ½ oz lime juice
- ¾ oz chili liqueur
- ¾ oz corn liqueur
- 1 oz mezcal
Shake // Double strain // Garnish: maraschino cherry
Ok last one in my series of inspiration from @npub1kyd…jltj 😋 He posted this one last week as well, again keeping to the mezcal+nixta theme.
Sourced from Difford's guide and a spiritual child of The Last Word, this one again combines all the ingredients in the last couple posts: agave spirit, Nixta Licor de Elote, and chili liqueur.
I split the chili liqueur with a homemade biquinho-infused tequila I had laying around after reading the Difford's page saying their recommended liqueur had a fresh, vegetal vibe to it. I was very pleased with the result!

MASA TAI
¾ oz lime juice
½ oz orgeat
½ oz Nixta Licor de Elote
1 oz Rhum Agricole Blanc ❼
1 oz Tequila blanco
Shake // Open pour // Garnish: spent lime shell, mint sprig
Another one that spent too much time on my re-shake list! But again @npub1kyd…jltj prompted me to finally make it, and ooh boy it was good! Originally by Daniel Zajic, I modified the base spirits since I didn't have access to his choice: Oaxacan rum. I picked something grassy and split with tequila to compliment the Nixta Licor de Elote.
Notes of grass, black pepper, cooked agave, roasted corn, caramel, and nuttiness against a classic tiki base with the rum/lime/orgeat.

ELOTE MEZCAL OF
- 2 dashes bitters
- 2 drops saline solution
- ¼ oz Ancho Reyes chili liqueur
- ¾ oz Nixta Licor de Elote
- 1½ oz mezcal
Stir // Strain // Garnish: orange twist
Last week @npub1kyd…jltj was whipping up some mezcal cocktails and inspired me. This one was delish! I agree with his modifications from the source: no agave syrup needed and I simplified the build by using Ancho Reyes instead of infusing the mezcal. My mezcal is slightly overproof at 46% which helped it stand up to the other sweet ingredients. Cheers!

I made one a few months back with mezcal/Nixta! As with many tiki drinks, those flavors become subtle amongst the non-alcoholic ingredients, but fun nonetheless.

BUZZED BENEATH THE WAVES
- 1 oz lime juice
- ¾ oz orgeat
- ½ oz Cynar 70
- ¾ oz Amaro Averna amaro
- 1 oz rye
- 1 oz overproof Pot Still Lightly Aged Rum ❶
Shake // Open pour // Garnish: grated nutmeg
A bit more bitter for those die-hard Jungle Bird fans. After preparing as directed, snapping the pic, and finally starting to sip I found it way too potent to be over a rock. I'd recommend an open pour over crushed ice. Originally seen on IG onesipclub.

NIGHT NURSE
- 1 oz Jamaican Blended Aged Rum ❸
- 1 oz Punt e Mes
- ¾ oz Campari
- ½ oz overproof Pot Still Lightly Aged Rum ❶
- ¼ oz Cynar
- 1 tsp banana liqueur
- 1 tsp coffee liqueur
Stir // Strain // Garnish: orange peel
When I first saw this list of ingredients I thought it sounded too complicated, but it really was a nice combo. I went for my best bottle of Hampden, the 2010 LROK expression, combined with the classic OP Jamaican pot still Smith & Cross.
The rums get elevated by the banana liqueur which brings out their funk, while the three amari and coffee liqueur form a four-layer wall of bitter that reins it back in to a place of balance. The Punt e Mes brings a hint of vermouth and that orange peel oil lands you pretty close to a rum Negroni.

- ½ oz salted caramel sweet cream
- ½ oz Nixta Licor de Elote

- ¾ oz Stroh 80
Shake // Open pour // Garnish: dehydrated orange
This has been on my reshake list forever and I finally got around to it! In December 2024 I went to Mothership, a space-themed tiki bar in San Diego with Star Trek TOS vibes that I just loved. The spec proportions are my best guess, but I think I landed pretty close and it tasted great.
At the bar it came in a Nachtmann crystal glass and contained Stroh, an Austrian rum. Both really easy to get in my area, so I vowed to remake it. I went a step further with the Stroh and used a barspoon to cover the dehydrated orange for a flaming boost to warp speed! The original had a candied orange instead of dehydrated (see second pic to compare).

This one is a dark, moody stir for a quiet evening. First impression is full of coffee with the cooked agave punching through, but slowly gives way to the amari as you sip: orange peel, cola, with just a touch of smokiness from the mezcal.

SPICED CRANBERRY FRENCH 75
½ oz lemon juice
½ oz simple syrup
1 oz gin
float sparkling wine
Garnish: none
Method: I normally batch this one, adding 20% water to dilute. Then once both bottles of batch and champagne are chilled down, combine them in glass (heavy on champagne) and serve to the group. The picture has a reddish color because this one used spiced cranberry simple syrup instead of regular simple.
Cranberry syrup: I brought water to a boil, then brought the heat down to medium low. I threw in a bunch of sliced cranberries, a cinnamon stick, a star anise, allspice, black pepper, cloves, and a pinch of salt. I let them all cook together for an hour or so. Added 1.5x sugar compared to the water, killed the heat, stirred to incorporate fully, then strained into a bottle after it cooled.

UBE BAE Nᵒ 2
½ tsp ube powder
¾ oz lime juice
½ oz curaçao
½ oz orgeat
¼ oz allspice dram
¾ oz falernum
1 oz coconut milk
1 oz Rhum Agricole Blanc ❼
½ oz batavia arrack
Shake // Open pour // Top with ice
Garnish: edible orchid, pineapple frond
My take on the original Ube Bae from False Idol in San Diego. I was there visiting friends a year ago and loved this one: nutty, toasted grains, and spiciness from both tiki-style liqueurs and the lighter base spirits. In trying to recreate it I made something totally new, but similar to my memory. The color comes form the Ube powder, a purple sweet potato whose color shifts pink when exposed to acidity.

SHUDDERS IN A WHISPER
¾ oz lime juice
½ oz passion fruit syrup
½ oz pear liqueur
¼ oz Drambuie
2 oz seltzer
2 oz Column Still Aged Rum ❹
2 dashes Peychauds bitters
1 dash Angostura bitters
Flash blend // Open pour // Garnish: mint sprig, edible orchid
It's really getting cold here, so my solution is to flash blend drinks and pretend I'm somewhere tropical 😎 This one comes from the Smuggler's Cove book, page 118. I made it because I was trying to use pear liqueur, and it really blends nicely with the Drambuie, with the rum playing second fiddle.
And how about that glass bamboo straw?? I just got a new set from Surfside Sips, and they're next-level quality. I can't recommend them enough, and you'd be supporting a small self-owned business! Non-spon, I'm just a happy customer like you will be: https://www.surfsidesips.com/

PEACHES & SAGE
8-10 sage leaves
¾ oz lemon juice
¾ oz peach liqueur
½ oz Oloroso sherry
2 oz cognac
2 dashes bitters
1 egg white
Garnish: sage leaves, peach wedge
Method: Combine all ingredients in a shaker and dry shake. Add one large ice cube plus a cheater cube, and shake hard. Double strain into a chilled coupe, let the foam stabilize for a moment, then lay a thin slice of peach and a sage leaf on the foam as garnish.
I think this is an original from IG cocktails_with_mike (at least he didn't cite anyone). I'm not a huge fan of sage, but I have to say this was a nice play with the sherry and citrus in particular, with cognac and bitters making it an autumnal affair.

1 oz rosé vermouth
1 oz strawberry-infused gin

Proportions were my best guess based on the mention of White Negroni being their inspiration. An original by Andrew Burton at the Horse Inn. BITTERSWEET IDENTITY CRISIS
2 dashes lavender bitters
½ oz orgeat
¾ oz Green Chartreuse
1½ oz mezcal
Garnish: lemon peel
Method: Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice, and stir. Strain over a large rock of clear ice, express lemon peel, and garnish.
I saw this from IG highproofpreacher and felt compelled to try it immediately. As he said, it's a weird one! But it was delightful and confusing on my tongue all at the same time. Sweetness from orgeat followed by the herbal notes and finishing with smokiness, it defies categorization. I chose a slightly higher proof mezcal from Alipús at 47.5% which stood up nicely to the Chartreuse and fat pour of orgeat.
I didn’t have lavender bitters, so I went aromatic with home-grown lavender from my balcony slightly charred with a flame.

LAGOON WATER
½ oz lime cordial 🍋‍🟩
¼ oz blue simple syrup 🔵
1½ oz gin
1 dash umami bitters
4 drops saline
top with seltzer
Garnish: orchid
Method: Set soda aside and build drink in glass in the order listed. Add a large rock of ice, add soda, and stir until color is even.
I found this one on the cheerstohappyhour IG channel and had to work my butt off to make it happen ;) The build is quite involved as listed, making blue simple syrup and I also had to make the lime cordial (I'd wanted to for a while anyway). The umami bitters are also very niche, but luckily I'd already gotten them for another cocktail some months back. And finally, the clear ice and maintaining orchids at home are both their own projects spanning days/months :D If you can manage to make it, it's got a five-star look and tastes great on a sunny afternoon!
🔵 Blue simple syrup: combine 1 cup sugar and ¾ teaspoon blue spirulina powder (or food coloring), and stir to incorporate dry ingredients. Once mixed, add one cup water then stir until everything is dissolved.

Workshopping some #cocktails for an open tasting I will be hosting in a couple months at Bierhandlung, my local #CraftBeer shop in #Freiburg
Both feature Frida, a New England IPA from local brewer Braukollektiv, making them lower ABV, fizzy and just delightful on a warm day. I was playing around with #rye #whiskey as my base spirit for both of them.

That sounds simply excellent. What oak container do you have for aging? I’d love to see a pic of that too.

CAFE DE CALABAZA
1 oz orange juice
2 oz pineapple juice
1 oz coconut cream
¼ oz allspice dram
¼ oz cinnamon syrup
¼ oz falernum
¾ oz espresso liqueur
1½ oz mezcal espadín
Garnish: pineapple frond, cinnamon stick, grated nutmeg
Method: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with crushed ice, shake, and open pour into mug. Garnish with love.
It's pumpkin spice without the pumpkin! Although this type of cocktail normally makes its rounds in the fall, I still love to reach for something like it when winter stubbornly marches on. The color is nothing to write home about so I threw it into my handmade False Idol mug by Bosko. Cocktail is originally by Brian "shakerofspirits" Maxwell.

Method: Combine all ingredients in a mixing tin with crushed ice and blend. A shaker with crushed ice will also do. Open pour with gated finish into glass and garnish.
I always like drinks with bitters as a base spirit. They're bound to be bold and interesting! This one is tempered by coconut and pineapple, with a little bit of pot still rum to give it that Daq vibe. Hoping to see weather like this again soon!

Cutting my own #clearIce for #homeBartending - lots of work but it pays off!
I use directional freezing with a cheap Coleman 5L cooler whose lid I completely removed, placed within the bottom drawer of a kitchen freezer. I leave it in there for 2½ days then slice it into shape. For shaping, I use a bread knife to serrate one edge of the ice until the knife is about a third of the way into the ice, then tap it like a chisel with the handle of my biggest knife (a hammer would also do). If the serration was clean and deep enough, your first strike should snap the ice clean in half.
You could do much bigger batches with a chest freezer and bigger cooler. For me, one freeze gets me 5-6 really shapely rocks plus when I’m lucky I can manage one collins spear (you can see it in the photo!)

THREE DOTS AND A DASH
½ oz lime juice
½ oz orange juice
½ oz honey syrup
¼ oz falernum
¼ oz allspice dram
1½ oz Rhum Agricole Vieux ❽
½ oz Blended Aged Rum ❸
1 dash Angostura bitters
Garnish: three maraschino cherries, pineapple chunk
Method: Add all the ingredients to a drink mixer tin. Fill with 12 oz crushed ice and 4-6 agitator cubes. Flash blend and open pour with a gated finish into a footed pilsner glass. If you don't have a drink blender (I don't) then shaking obviously does the trick.
For the garnish use one spear for three maraschino cherries and the pineapple chunk. Place horizontally on the rim of the glass. It represents V for victory in Morse code •••—
This drink is a certified tiki classic from Don the Beachcomber during WWII, later decoded by Jeff Beachbum Berry, and republished in the Smuggler's Cove book, page 43.

Stirring my way through the cold weather. I found it hard to pick out the base spirits. Rather, they intensified the bitters and amaro bringing out strong spicy flavors balanced out nicely by the syrup. I found this one on IG chips_classic_cocktails.

Especially for a drink served without ice that would have been the smart move. Whenever I use a coupe it goes straight into the freezer before I start working on the cocktail, but this time I didn't think of it.

SAZERAC
rinse glass with absinthe
3 dashes Peychauds bitters
¼ oz demerara syrup
2 oz Sazerac rye
Garnish: lemon peel
Method: Use an atomizer to rinse your serving glass with absinthe. Combine the remaining ingredients in a stirring glass with ice and stir. Strain into the glass, express lemon peel, and use as garnish.
Another boozy stir for a cold winter night. This version of the legendary cocktail comes from the book Cure: New Orleans drinks and how to mix 'em, page 29. MOTHERSHIP tiki bar
Another stop on our bougie bar tour, this is a tiki bar with EXACTLY my kind of kitsch: a mix of tiki with strong Star Trek original series vibes. Rock formations and glowing crystals adorn every booth, with some benches looking like salvaged spaceship benches. We sat in the back and got to take the whole scene in. The rum bowl was quite a spectacle, momentarily simulating a crash with their lighting/sound effects.
Our second round was pictured here with three drinks off of their holiday menu: Joy Serum (old fashioned), Metagalactic butter rum (hot drink), and Holy Diver (tiki long drink). The other pic is the bar itself.

Youngblood
I went on vacation and had someone make me drinks for once! A hidden bar inside a hidden bar inside the Neighborhood restaurant, Youngblood is a cozy, intimate cocktail bar offering three courses to each guest. Everything is dealer's choice: instead of picking from a menu, you talk with the bartender and they craft something catered to your taste on the spot. Be sure to go with folks that you don't mind sharing with... you'll want to try everything that comes to your table!
Pictured here is a wide shot of the bar itself, plus my second drink which was a cognac old fashioned with creme de cacao, banana liqueur, chocolate bitters, and generous drops of saline.
