Last week’s Nobel for optogenetics is already giving blind people some sight back. Retinitis pigmentosa kills the eye’s light-detecting cells but leaves the nerve cells behind them intact. Researchers in Pittsburgh and Basel injected those nerve cells with a gene for a light-sensitive protein, then fitted ten patients with goggles that turn whatever the camera sees into flashes of amber light the new protein can respond to. A wild humpback whale has had its heartbeat recorded for the first time. Ashley Blawas and colleagues used suction-cup tags to track blue and humpback whales through complete dives and feeding lunges. Blue whales’ hearts idle at six to seven beats per minute at depth, then jump to around 22 after a lunge; humpbacks spike to about 28 but recover in just 17 seconds, versus 60 for blue whales. One tag stayed attached off Antarctica for nearly three days. https://oceanographicmagazine.com/news/matters-of-the-heart-whats-a-blue-whales-heartbeat-telling-us/

The nationwide drive, which ended on 5 October, covered every child aged nine months to five years, whatever their vaccine history. Australia’s High Court has ruled that the climate impact of coal burned overseas needs to be considered. In a landmark decision earlier this week the court ruled that the approval of a massive coalmine expansion in the Hunter Valley was invalid, because planners never considered the emissions from the coal that would be burned abroad. Salt batteries move from hype to serious money. Sodium-ion batteries, which use abundant salt rather than lithium, copper and graphite, are starting to look like a real challenger for grid storage and commercial vehicles. Morgan Stanley estimates they could reach 20% of battery deployment by 2030 and trigger $800 billion in investment by 2035, thanks to lower costs, better cold-weather performance and fewer critical-mineral bottlenecks. Scientists make the world’s most efficient solar panel. German researchers have built the most efficient solar panel ever, turning 34.4% of sunlight into electricity. That’s way higher than ordinary rooftop panels, which usually convert between 20-23%. This is a research breakthrough, not something you can buy for your roof yet, but it shows how much better solar panels may still become.
