Last week’s Nobel for optogenetics is already giving blind people some sight back. Retinitis pigmentosa kills the eye’s light-detecting cells but leaves the nerve cells behind them intact. Researchers in Pittsburgh and Basel injected those nerve cells with a gene for a light-sensitive protein, then fitted ten patients with goggles that turn whatever the camera sees into flashes of amber light the new protein can respond to.
