Researchers in Shanghai have grown the heart’s “natural pacemaker” in a dish. When the sinoatrial node fails, doctors implant electronic pacemakers under the skin.
A Chinese team has coaxed human stem cells into building a miniature version of the natural patch — a “sinoatrial node organoid.” They also grew the bundle of nerves that wraps around the heart and tells it to speed up or slow down (the cardiac plexus), and wired the two together.
