'4' has become the '67' of tech, and I am not happy about it.

2026-10-23 02:27:12 UTC

TIL about the Bernays-Schonfinkel class. What I didn't learn is what Moses Schonfinkel had to do with it - I know of him only by way of the combinator calculus.
Any #logic people able to enlighten me?

In my #LaserEngraving adventures, I finally cracked the code to get some proper depth on 3mm acrylic engravings without getting a warped potato chip.
It comes down to the following:
* Low-energy fast passes (I'm doing 9000mm/min at 30%)
* Cross-hatch the engraving
* Lots of passes (picture is six)
* The _gentlest_ bit of air assist
Really happy with that - decent depth and no warping!

Any #3DModelling Fedi friends want to make some money? I'd like a model of some cute animals, as a relief engraving, suitable for #CNCMachining, and am happy to pay for it. This must be your own work - I have a zero-tolerance policy for slop.
Reach out to me in a PM if you're interested.

Dear image-expert Fedi: I would like to do some relief engravings, and would love to know of any depth mapping tools (preferably open source) you can recommend. The target is a CNC engraving, but since I have a laser, that would be cool too.
I don't mind doing some learning, but I genuinely have no idea how to get good depth maps for either process from a photo.

Today, we used #CNCMachining, #LaserCutting _and_ #LaserEngraving . This will eventually be a DnD dicebox, but the lid will involve a paint fill, so I won't finish it today.
Those who follow me for #FDM , fear not: this is a swingy lid box, so it'll need a (printed) latch.

One common thing I end up doing in #FreeCAD is fixing up (frankly) poorly-designed models I find online. Since these are usually STLs, it leads to some annoying moments, like 'finding the centre of a circle that's now actually a bunch of vaguely-circular line segments now'.
Decided to showcase an easy technique in part design to find the centre of such a 'circle'. First, mark three points on the perimeter - doesn't matter where.

Following up from my baking soda #Laser experiments, I made this engraving for a friend. The material was slightly warped, which is why the tip of one claw didn't fully engrave, but otherwise, a pretty great result.
25% power was indeed the right call here. Cutting through the 5mm material took a little bit of effort though.

Someone in my #DnD5e group got this supplement: https://ko-fi.com/s/7f97a26b25
Naturally, I wanted to practice my #LaserCutting and make it a wooden cover. As a test, I decided to engrave just the fey on the cover. All of these were done at the same speed (9K mm/min), but at different power and with different surface prep. I'll make each one in its own post.

Experienced #LaserCutting folks: for an air assist on a laser, does static pressure matter more than airflow, the other way around, or potentially both? I've heard both come up in a lot of sources on this topic, but I am _completely_ lost as to the reasoning behind why you'd care about one or the other.
For reference: I have a 30L/min, _probably_ 2-4ish psi device on mine, and I have no idea if that's right or not.

TIL that apparently, you _can_ machine uranium. Moreover, it has been done.
The idea of doing this is horrifying, especially because of this gem:
"Finely divided uranium is pyrophoric; therefore machining chips and grinding residue must be handled carefully to avoid the danger of fire. .... Dry power fire extinguishers should be readily available. Never use water on uranium fires. "

Decided I'd give a deep engrave on 18mm macrocarpa a go. Overall, went well - needed water and a toothbrush to de-soot, and then some (slightly over-aggressive on my part) sanding, but looks great and has decent height changes.
Cutting this out took... effort, and ended with a hacksaw. Luckily you can't see that.

The #Laser experiments continue! This time, I tried 18mm macrocarpa, which I have a local source for.
The cutting attempt ended with the first triggering of the fire detector on my laser (which I can confirm worked perfectly). Guess I won't be cutting through 18mm hardwood in one pass any time soon. Surprising nobody I guess.
Deep engraving, however, went much better! The deepest I managed (1000mm/min, 100% power) is _over five mm of depth_. In one pass.

I saw this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSYWE8Z8b_o . Since dry moly lube is hard to find here, I figured I'd try this spray paint. Chucked it on some stainless steel, let it dry, then lasered a typical grid, cleaning up with acetone. I also tried it on bare metal.
At 1000mm/min and 100% power, I can get a nice black mark with it. Clearly I need more power in my laser! The bare metal... basically didn't get marked at all.

Decided to copy @nprofile…j3y3 and make some OPR tokens. However, being an overachiever, I'm making mine custom, out of black acrylic. The deep engrave worked well here (no warping), and I am filling the engraving with red ink.
Bottom row is two coats, the rest are one coat in varying stages of drying. Might even need a third. These are meant to be wound markers for multiples of three wounds - will make a one-wound marker next.

Now that I have more black acrylic (3mm thickness), I decided I'd try for a deep engraving. On the plus side, this is _definitely_ deep. On the minus side, I got significant warping. Is this just me trying to carve too deep into too-thin material? I ended up doing about five passes, plus a cutout.
Anyone who knows about #LaserEngraving or #LaserCutting - I would love some advice!

The black acrylic worked the best I think. Will be fun to test more deep engraving when I get some more (which should be tomorrow). Also need to figure out how to stop discolouration on the wood, especially on the deeper one.

Continuing my laser adventures with black acrylic. I found a vendor selling cast acrylic near me, and asked for an offcut for testing. They supplied me some 6mm material, which I didn't think my 22W laser could blast through, but it did.
This stuff engraves _amazingly_. Definitely gonna get more of that!

As an aside, Rayforge is 100% the best option for lasering things on Linux today. It's still rough around the edges, but the dev working on it is _very_ responsive and helpful.
Looking forward to making more stuff with it. My next thing will be bamboo ply or black acrylic, whichever I can source first.

Again, a fantastic video by Igor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C2W7KbyRfU
Two things _really_ stood out for me:
1. 'PC-CF' is a very generic, and not very informative, label. The behaviour of the eight different tested materials was in some cases _nothing_ alike. TDSes matter!
2. Warm creep was as bad as _12%_ with some of these materials, after only about 5 hours, at < 60C temps. PC-CFs all have much higher Tg and HDT. Keep that in mind next time you print mods for your enclosed printer!

@nprofile…j3y3 In general, I like what I've seen of 3.6. My only concern (not necessarily complaint) is that all the 'on hold' triggering abilities feel a bit contrived. Given how objective-focused OPR is, mobility is king, and incentivizing standing still by turning your abilities off feels like it lacks finesse.
I'm happy to be shown as wrong, but it feels like an outright nerf to some armies, which IMO don't deserve it.

@nprofile…j3y3 Current-day 40K is a level of lameness I never expected it to reach. I've been playing 40K since early 3rd edition (turn-ish of the millenium), and while many of its issues were apparent even to 12-year-old me, everything has gotten so much shittier since then, it's actually kind of remarkable.

2026-08-18 22:18:04 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…j3y3 Also FWIW, GW have basically made it both mechanically _and_ practically disadvantageous to make your minis unique. Light of sight is based on 3D footprint, which means things like cool banners and decorations are a mechanical downside, so nobody does them. Furthermore, because 'special' characters aren't opponent's-permission anymore, if you're not playing a named faction, you're giving up power.
And of course, the minis are now _anti_-modular to boot. The goal is MtGification.

2026-08-18 22:16:18 UTC

@nprofile…j3y3 And 11th edition _maintained_ this inanity. They just changed objectives from 'point with a radius' to 'terrain piece of specific shape'.

2026-08-18 22:15:30 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…j3y3 It's because GW finally got what Hasbro understood years ago: tourney metachasers will pay _any_ sum of money as often as needed to win. However, tourney metachasers want the (illusion of) balance, and terrain layouts are one of the most obvious sources of 'imbalance'.
Thus, they re-geared everything to basically make perfectly symmetrical, predictable layouts. It's just business, and GW have always known what side their bread is buttered on.

* Average XY shrinkage of 99.1%
* Z 'shrinkage' of 101%
Given that this is a fairly budget resin (Sunlu ABS-like) without _any_ compensation and somewhat-too-high exposure, I'd say that's pretty great.

Some folks might remember my earlier #Resin3DPrinting experiments involving printed bearings. I ended up not finishing those due to repeated failures (caused by bad resin, as it turned out). I ended up changing the resin, but life got the better of me, as usual.
However, I had another chance to do a dimensional accuracy test: a replacement keycap. So, here goes! The images are post-wash and cure, but pre-any-processing. The dimple was due to a resin bubble.

Furthermore, it definitely ranges in its effects. Regular water-based acrylic paint comes off fairly well, but anything polyurethane-based (airbrush primer, varnish, etc) takes a lot of time and scrubbing to remove.

@nprofile…w882 What paint stripper do you use? I typically go for isopropanol and a toothbrush.

@nprofile…w882 What's the green-brown texture-type stuff you've got on the minis? Is that old paint you had to strip, or some kind of texturing compound?

@nprofile…j3y3 I was going to post this in the OPR Discord, but I was worried of falling afoul of their standard 'nO pOlITiCs' rule or catching a stray weirdo.
Glad you like it though! You'll _definitely_ enjoy my next project.

And finished! This was a bunch of firsts for me, starting with sponging and ending with #FDM base, and while I'm not 100% happy with it, the basic idea works.
What I'd change:
* The base needs... something more interesting going on there.
* The halo needs to be made a _lot_ sturdier.
@nprofile…j3y3 - here ya go, finished Change Disciple!

@nprofile…j3y3 Sponging is a technique I wish I had discovered earlier.

@nprofile…j3y3 - you were curious how painting would look: here ya go!
I tried a new #MiniaturePainting technique for this (sponging). I still have to paint in all the metallics, and tertiary colours too, but I'm unreasonably happy with how well this worked.
Tip I learned: camo is yellow + black. You're welcome.

Decided to make a new take on OPR Change Disciples. This uses a bunch of different kits, but the halo was something I made (with lots of help from @nprofile…l75f ). The base was also an #FDM printing test, but the mini itself is still made using #Resin3DPrinting .
@nprofile…j3y3 - figured you'd approve!

#Terrain and #FDM Fedi: does anyone know of any good designs for either of these:
* FDM-optimized trees (like, living 'standard' trees, not alien/withered husks/etc)
* FDM-optimized tree armatures (which could get foliage added)
I've looked everywhere but haven't found anything decent.

It's been a while since I posted anything I made, so here's some #Terrain . This uses a combination of #FDM prints and homemade flock. The painting on the walls is a mixture of spraycans and gouache wash.
The glue still needs to try, and then I have to hit it with some matte sealer, but this is close to done!

@nprofile…j3y3 @nprofile…axjj The fungus is the magical part. You can't really ferment rice very well otherwise, as it has very little available sugar.

2026-07-09 00:40:24 UTC

@nprofile…j3y3 @nprofile…axjj Soju and sake are similarly made: they're both made by 'cracking' rice starch into sugars using a magic fungus, then fermenting.
The difference is that sake is purely fermented, whereas soju is distilled. Also, the 'precursor product' of soju is nothing like sake: it's called 'makkoli', and it's a cloudy drink.
