small-time fedi trainwreck personality & long-abiding fedi development attempter. been here since 2017 and haven't accomplished a damn thing besides making friends :)

I used to work in 9-5 software engineering but found it wasn't for me, and then life took me on a ride. I'm still on that ride, and now trying to reboot as an indie developer.

this irl cyberpunk dystopia is way too close to Mr Robot. it's exhausting and demoralizing and far too supportive of cynicism, and the lighting sucks compared to what I was led to believe would be standard issue.

if anyone wants to help, the 3 main things I need right now are
* a #BodyDoubling work chat with 1+ persons typically awake during US daytime where we babble about whatever we're trying to do thru the day with fairly high interactivity
* money for basic needs to the donate link in my profile. even $5 helps. for example right now I need a pair of pants pretty badly.
* (hail mary) help with any way of accessing solitude or personal transportation for same, I am in PNW USA.

got overwhelmed and disconnected from the timeline for a bit, sleep/wake pushed around the clock after a week plus of instability. unfortunately everything overwhelming is still waiting for me including several issues critical to basic life & health. on the other hand my mood is still in a + regime, even though I haven't gotten the non-chemical lifestyle adjustments I planned a couple months ago into place yet. this is presumably due to the chemical adjustment + some luck.

my wish would be a comprehensive rework of scheduled posting & boosting to make it work like tumblr's queue, which allows mixing of posts and boosts, and combines scheduling for specific times with a "post/reblog every h:mm" feature.
this is a big ask and I have no idea how many people use the scheduling features now, but my rationale for this is that curators who queue posts make up a vital part of the tumblr ecosystem which I have wanted to replicate on fedi for nearly a decade.

and to keep it a little more narrowly topical:
there are BIG reasons to be EXTREMELY skeptical of how the base technology is being developed & deployed, and by whom, and where the money is going.
but by turning it into a crusade, some people who'd be quite inclined along those lines, will instead be repelled, and potential energy which could've been actualized into keeping the many problems in check, will instead go somewhere else.

yeah that was my thought. I'm planning to use my Zen 3 box to start experiments in that direction with tasks like fuzzy natural-language search of my photo collection or my archive of every interesting site I visit, things like that which could conceivably run pretty well on limited hardware. my overall goal is to build out custom workflows for all kinds of developer-y tasks I need/want to do which won't ever be rugpulled or significantly altered by the Sam Altmans of the world.

2026-08-03 20:25:17 UTC

yeah, it's still developing at a breakneck pace and there could be huge changes just over the horizon, it's hard to know.
my other interest is in just how useful small models can be made, which can run on constrained hardware. sort of the other end of the "how can I get a really good GPU that fits in a 1LPC in my closet" problem - how can I get a really good model that runs on the 5yo 1LPC already in my closet.

2026-08-03 20:21:27 UTC

I feel like there are multiple ways it could develop. I'm interested in it as a pair-programming assistant which helps me puzzle thru my own process of development like a chat partner with a full view into my coding session, much more than as a code generator. this is in part because I have AuDHD which has a large effect on how I work (or fail to work) and I see a role for LLM tech as a sort of cognitive prosthetic for people like me, especially when we're not in an ideal "flow" state.

also, I wanna add to the prior toot for anyone who clicks in to read this thread: I'm supportive of people who want to purge all genAI from their lives. I'm not gonna follow that exact path but I'm sure as fuck not gonna condemn anybody who does. what I wish for The Discourse™ and my sanity is that folks in that camp can move beyond "AI bad" into "here is how I'm gonna build/support what I need to accomplish my goal." less perseverative ranting, more donating/developing for NetBSD etc.

2026-08-03 19:59:58 UTC

the reason the Discourse™ is so oppressively monotonous on here - apart from sheer volume - is that 95% of it is zero-nuance in-group signalling. I don't give a fuck about such bilge regardless of topic and it gets really REALLY fucking old.
that's not what you're doing, so I click past the filter-imposed CW on your posts on it quite often. the reality is that it's not going away and we need to chart a course that doesn't just consist of plugging our ears and yelling "LALALALALA."

2026-08-03 19:50:57 UTC

the last 5 or so times I reloaded my home timeline, the very first post was caught by my GenAI Discourse™ filter.
I break my filter sets into subsets of about 200 terms because Fedilab starts to bog down editing more than around 200. I started a third subset for GenAI Discourse™ two days ago, it's now up to 40 terms (20% of its maximum size). in two days.
I *beg* you motherfuckers to talk about *literally anything else.*

now my concern could absolutely be unfounded, and I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but I'll just again point out that the supposed founder of IFTAS is somebody whose bio link on that site points to LinkedIn instead of anywhere running ActivityPub, and that people broadly similar to him are increasingly taking it upon themselves to define how this place operates.

2026-07-31 00:01:20 UTC

the more I see these well-scrubbed comfortable people with little to no precarity in their lives excitedly collaborating on ActivityPub development, the more I become concerned for the future of the network (and more importantly me and my friends' ability to use it in peace).

I think if people want a non sloperating system to exist, they are going to have to be a lot more willing to part with money to pay devs to work on it.
and I don't just say that because I'd like to get paid to do something like that. I mean it's just not going to happen unless people pay for it, whether that be a donation model or something else.

2026-07-24 20:35:16 UTC

- reply

from what little I know, I think NetBSD has done exactly that in some important ways: I think a bunch of their hardware drivers involve a hardware abstraction layer to some degree. but without enough people building (and probably money too), a lot of drivers still just don't exist. and thus some people will be highly tempted to use genAI coding assistance to write drivers. which, like, I get it.

2026-07-24 20:28:55 UTC

- reply

yeah, so far my impression of NetBSD is that - while I'm committed to using it for the application I've allocated to it (managing UPSes, switching power etc) and as my first foray into BSD world - it's kinda at the "Linux in the early 2000s" development level right now.
if I had piles of cash, I would donate. but I don't.

2026-07-24 19:16:36 UTC

exactly.
I also wonder if there's any realistic world where computing advances beyond a certain point where slop doesn't appear, depending on one's definition of slop. which opens up a massive can of worms regarding machine consciousness and the like, wherein one worm in the can is "it doesn't actually matter whether it 'thinks' or not"

2026-07-24 19:12:44 UTC

- reply

I do wonder about "ethically trained" models for coding assistance, for example Adobe has an image-generation model they claim is ethically trained. I'm way too exhausted to delve much into philosophical conversations about it, but I wonder if some are being developed for coding & tech use cases.

2026-07-24 19:08:39 UTC

- reply

yeah, and I can see where that may be a depressing choice to face. I'm landing with the middle option because the last isn't realistic for my survival. (I interpret the first as being "fully embrace Sam Altman type megacorp tools" which I won't do)

2026-07-24 19:04:05 UTC

tired: reading endless GenAI Discourse™
wired: building a filter to catch GenAI Discourse™
inspired: examining your own GenAI Discourse™ to add terms from any false negatives to the filter set

2026-07-24 17:06:09 UTC

open my fedi app for the morning scroll and 8 of the first 40 messages are GenAI Discourse™ (6 caught by filter and 2 false negatives), in case anyone was wondering why I have a filter set with well over 300 terms and growing steadily.
I even read some of them and am going to interact with one. but it's much more my choice to engage with the exhausting topic (or not) because of the filter.

I'm genuinely asking FWIW. if ZKPs or a similar mechanism can be used to verify that a record is stored at a cert-authority-like institution without any possible way to link the act of verification to the identity of the person being verified, I would be less opposed, though still opposed.

2026-07-05 19:14:14 UTC

- reply

are you saying there's no way to link the act of verifying with a ZKP to the identity of the person being verified that's stored at the bank/whatever?
that's a huge problem with so-called ❝age verification.❞ the ability to pierce the veil of anonymity which shields legally protected speech whenever the government decides the speaker is persona non grata, or whenever law enforcement or the "intelligence community" decides protections like the 4th Amendment don't apply to them.

2026-07-03 23:24:31 UTC

I apologize for being snarky, this is one of the few political issues which still has the power to rile me up.
my threat model is the government itself. for me, ZKP doesn't solve the problem that my identity will be tied to whatever account I use to exercise my right to speak. even if the platform can't get it, the government can, and that's 100% unacceptable to me.
but yes, it does appear to solve the issue of every platform complying with this bullshit storing identity data.

This is especially important for CalDAV/CardDAV, where we want to bring (near-)real-time synchronization (which is nowadays industry standard for proprietary protocols) also to CalDAV/CardDAV clients.

2 things came to mind:
1. it'd be cool if a whole instance could set a default opt-out. (it'd also be cool if single users of that instance could still opt in, but that's less important.)
2. I can imagine disabling "search engine" indexing but still wanting to opt in to Holos Discover: if I don't want to be on web search engines but do want to be on ActivityPub-native search engines. this is a limit of the profile option granularity, but as an interactive bot, Holos could work around it…

IFTAS has other lists; their 80% list is a good start for manually vetted pre-emptive blocking. anything below that (eg the 50% list) I'd not likely use, certainly not in an automated way.

in fact, one of the selling points of starting back out with PHP on the web app side is the low barrier to entry. I like Python a lot more than PHP (yes I know it doesn't scale™ and the ecosystem is a mess but I *enjoy writing it*) but it's undeniably a higher barrier to entry. I started with LAMP over 25 years ago and it really is dump files in a directory and go at its most simple. maybe that's due to the decades of experience, but the end result is the same either way.

when it comes to mobile development, I have written zero (0) bytes of code, ever, which have run on a mobile device, not counting in browser.
I've also decided that I'll stick with Android (until such time as Linux phones are further along) because I just don't have the money or the mental bandwidth or the desire to fuck with iOS.

web apps is what I know. but I want to get into mobile development because I'm convinced it's a good fit for my mind and its various quirks.

2026-03-07 21:09:40 UTC

been thinking more about this as I slowly stack up ideas on my programming bucket list…
I need projects which won't overwhelm me and lead to shutdown + abandonment, which leads to tentative conclusions:
* stick to PHP for web apps at first :(
* find existing projects with a high itch-to-scratch factor to contribute to, which will naturally suck me back in when I stray
* this is especially true for Android which has an awful brick wall to scale when it comes to dev tools

my take on this is that I think I need to be part of building this future, if only for myself, and with even more limited hardware since I can't afford a PC with a decent GPU and sufficient memory, so I'm gonna be stuck with 64GB and eight Zen 3 cores for the foreseeable future.

positive news: several bugs I reported in open source projects were fixed by the maintainers in the past couple weeks or so
this makes me happy not only because I use the projects but because I am in some way contributing (I write a good bug report, just like I write good documentation) even when I haven't got back to coding yet after over 10 years away

at what point do we start discussing moving past AI scraper blocking software into direct sabotage of genAI megacorp operations?
I would argue the time is now.

anyway that's my rant. if anybody wants to gather ideas about how to monkeywrench the genAI megacorp world domination plans, please chime in.
the good news is: Sam Altman wouldn't be locking in the majority of global silicon wafer starts if he thought he had any chance of building his business sustainably.
these fuckers have a *big* Achilles heel and we absolutely can bring them to a state of disarray long enough for some sanity to be injected. thank you for your attention to this matter!!

I'm sure plenty of people will disagree with my asterisk, and they think genAI should be completely purged, and will disapprove of anyone who uses it in any capacity at all. I don't agree, but I will say I respect their opinions more now than I did 3 hours ago, and I respected them a fair bit to start with. and whether or not they go too far, they need to win these debates long enough to knock bloodless torment-nexus shepherds like Sam Altman and Elon Musk decisively off their current path.

the only way I can see offhand (having just shifted my view on this) to accomplish this is to relentlessly fight genAI adoption in both professional & personal contexts - which doesn't have to be scorched-earth to be successful, if you think raising endless "concerns" will slow it down, by all means do that - and expressing clear social disapproval of its use in any non-decentralized context.*
make it costly, difficult, and unpleasant to adopt centralized genAI. drag it out as long as you can.

resisting genAI just long enough and just strong enough that the bubble pops is literally the only lever we have to pull versus deeply immoral scumbags with enough wealth to rival major nations, before they fuck up all our lives with breathtaking speed.
the tech won't be stopped, but the current trajectory needs to collide head-on with a major roadblock. choking off the venture capital is the only way, and the good news is that'll happen on its own if we drag out their plans long enough.

2026-02-13 21:08:03 UTC

regarding the "AI hit piece" post going around: it's put me past a tipping point. I don't think the tech is inherently evil and I don't buy half of what anti-genAI zealots say, but I've now turned the corner to thinking it's time to fight big-tech "AI" by any means necessary to drag out their schemes until the torrent of venture capital implodes. the current trajectory needs to be arrested, and megacorps pushing this shit need to be put back on their asses. #genAI #generativeAI #AIslop #fuckAI

I'd dearly love to see the bugs with scrolling back in bookmarks fixed
edit: scheduling boosts is a primary use case for me and these bugs make it much more difficult

it's got semantic "awareness" (using that term very loosely and not to imply cognition or consciousness). my understanding is that one of the hardest problems in computer science - semantic categorization of data - was partly solved by emergent properties of the network architecture they're using.
I don't really understand it much better than that, but it does appear that over time parts of the network tune themselves to be highly sensitive to very specific semantic concepts.

this is an example of why I'm not in the "throw all bathwater + any babies out" camp with respect to genAI.
I've barely engaged with it thus far and am committed to doing so deliberately and thoughtfully, but the people saying it's 100.0% a useless scam are engaged in ideology-first thinking.
it's also got potential for much more boring tasks like document classification and semantic-aware info extraction where a bit of fuzz is acceptable.

what I am saying, I think, is two things.
1. any push for allow-list federation at bigger general-purpose instances will inherently further fracture & divide a fediverse which already has divisions (mostly based on language, but also other concerns)
2. this is my online home. I've been here nearly 10 years. I'm moving more toward selfhosting with each passing month. I will very vigorously oppose any such push, and I assure you I won't be alone in that. just saying.

sure. just letting you know that if a move develops to start implementing it at bigger more general-purpose instances, there will be pushback, and for very good reason. thanks for all your work.
