I need suggestions, please.
I want to post what will hopefully end up being a fairly long tutorial, and I need Markdown. The highest character limit on any Fediverse server I've ever seen is 10,000 and I'm anticipating I'll need more than that, so making an alt account on another instance just for this is likely pointless. The ability to add pictures would be really, really helpful, FWIW.
Where should I go for this?

Realized that in the last picture I posted, all six puppies were visible, technically, but that there was one with another one on top of it (happens all the time 😂). So here's a proper picture of all six, lol.

Regular Emacs? Doom Emacs? The latter is what I "use," if we're even calling it that. I flop between that and Neovim, which isn't saying much because Doom Emacs has vim keybinds, for the text editor portion at least. It has Emacs style key chords for everything else. That's the part I've never really taken the time to learn, although I should.

Well… everything I have a keybind for in Qtile, and Qtile itself for that matter, has its own thread now.
Also, I am addicted to Rust now for the same reason.
I can almost guarantee you that my setup is way more responsive than anything you've ever seen on r/UnixPorn, and there's still absolutely no reason why I couldn't rice the hell out of it if I wanted to, I guess. I'm not going to, but I sure could, lol.
Seriously, though, this is why I use a tiling window manager: not because they look cool, but because they allow you to do weird things that save, by my estimate, objectively enough clock cycles that it actually feels faster subjectively. The things that fascinate me the most about Unix based operating systems is a mindset that is, for the most part, older than I am.
Or I would love to be wrong about that last part.
When you look at old-school Unix stuff like Grep, it was faster than it had any right to be, for the simple reason that it literally had to be. The hardware they were working with back then was capable of practically nothing by any standard that is even somewhat modern. I feel like no matter how good our hardware gets, the day that mentality becomes lost to history, is the day beyond which any hardware that could ever exist even in theory will never be enough.

To anyone who follows me, who saw the post I just boosted and then unboosted, I'm sorry; I unboosted it upon learning that it was misinformation.
The Medicaid portal still works in my state. I reported said post and gave that (misinformation) as the reason.
This won't happen again, as I'll personally verify any and all information, to the extent I'm able to do so, before boosting anything like this in the future. I also blocked the account as well as the entire server. I will continue to do exactly this regarding any and all accounts who lie about things that are this easy for anyone, even as lazy as I am, to verify. (I likely will only block the account and not the server, if I follow anyone on said server or vice versa; neither was true in this case, so no one lost anything by my blocking it.)
In this case, it was simple: they said they had "verified reports" that the Medicaid portal is down in all fifty states, so I checked mine. If the Medicaid portal is somehow down in every state except for mine, that's still terrifying, and it still makes it a lie when they said they'd "verified" that it was down in all fifty.
Everything's getting confusing enough as it is; people lying on the internet is the last thing we need right now.

This is why I'm grateful that the last computer I had before this one was old and already a piece of junk when it was new. I got it for free and it was worth every penny. 4 GB of RAM. I ran that machine for about a year, until May of last year when I built this one. This is why I still have things in my scripts like:
```for pid in $$ $(pgrep -P $$); do
sudo chrt -f -p 99 -a $pid
sudo renice --priority -20 -p $pid
sudo ionice -c 1 -n 0 -p $pid
done```
Once upon a time, forcing the highest possible priority for certain things was necessary. I have that commented out most places now as I no longer need it, but I don't forget the where I came from, and I still use my computer as if resources were severely limited. I have enough RAM now for however many tabs I want, and I still don't keep more than one, ideally, or at the very most three tab(s) open at once, just out of habit. That piece of junk was easily one of the best things that ever happened to me.
Remember that WhatsApp is also owned by Meta. They claim to use the same protocol as Signal, but since their client is not open source, we have to assume that's a lie and that nothing is actually encrypted, and that every message is stored in plain text and logged indefinitely.
Am I wrong for assuming that it was never about anything other than the money? I've always figured it was simply a matter of their being a Chinese based company, and the U.S. wanting to limit financial support to any Chinese company as much as possible. I could be wrong. I hope I'm wrong, actually; it's just that no official explanation has ever made more sense to me personally than "follow the money."
2025-01-16 00:08:29 UTC
Someone mentioned—correctly, I would imagine—that TikTok getting banned will/would drive sales/use of VPNs.
I realize there's been some news regarding one of the companies I'm about to mention, and I'm ignoring that for the sake of this post.
I highly recommend both Proton VPN and Mullvad. I have a paid subscription to both and I always will.
I run Proton on my router and Mullvad on my computer. The reason why applies in theory to any two VPNs that are not owned by the same parent company. In my case, Proton can see my actual IP address, and so they're aware of where my traffic is actually coming from. They are not, however, aware of the content of my traffic, because it's still encrypted by Mullvad. Contrariwise, Mullvad can see everything I'm doing, but they have no idea where any of it's actually coming from, because my connection to their server is from the Proton server that talks to my router. Unless there's something I'm unaware of, I'm as certain as anyone in my shoes reasonably can be, that both Proton and Mullvad are completely honest when they say that none of their VPN servers keep logs. If either of them are lying about that, I would be shocked. Let's just say for argument's sake, though, that the opposite is true instead, meaning that everything I do is being logged by both of them. Again: Proton knows where it's coming from but not what it is; Mullvad knows what it is but not where it's coming from. Unless I'm not understanding something, this would make historical analysis of both logs insufficient to correlate my traffic.
As a wannabe privacy advocate, I react negatively whenever anything that's not inherently illegal in my country nor should it be gets banned, just on principle. Having said that: if you're worried about the ban, don't buy a VPN to get around it. Buy two, along with a router specifically designed to run OpenWrt, and uninstall TikTok.
Thank you.
I'm not even sure how I ended up here, but song lyrics are where it gets really "good":
"Apple Bottom jeans (Jeans), boots with the fur (With the fur)
The whole club was lookin' at her
She hit the flo' (She hit the flo'), next thing you know
Shawty got low-low-low-low-low-low-low-low
Them baggy sweat pants and the Reeboks with the straps (With the straps)"
There's more chorus below that and I'm excluding it because it's irrelevant here, but anyway: apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur; baggy sweat pants, Reeboks with the straps. There's never a segue at any point. There's nothing between the lines that describe what kind of pants she's wearing followed by what kind of shoes she's wearing respectively, that would necessarily suggest he's talking about two different people at the same time, or the same person at two different times, or what have you.
She has four legs, clearly.
