In 1836, Edgar Allan Poe published an essay examining the Mechanical Turk, a famous chess-playing machine that had amazed audiences across Europe and America. The device appeared to play chess on its own, but Poe argued that a completely mechanical player should behave with perfect consistency.

This strange-looking armored car was the Škoda PA-II, nicknamed the “Želva” (“Turtle”) because of its rounded armor.
Developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s, it had an unusually streamlined body and could be driven in either direction, with drivers positioned at opposite ends. The Czechoslovak Army ultimately rejected it because it was heavy, cramped, expensive and poorly suited to rough terrain.

The migration of humans from Africa to the Southern tip of South America across the (now submerged) Bering land bridge took only 6,000 years according to archeological records. Racial types changed from Black to “Indian” during that migration to Chile. Northern Europeans racial became lighter in color due to the need to metabolize Vitamin D particularly in the cloudy Caucasus region where the white skinned people were named Caucasians.

Sophie Marceau as Princess Isabella of France in the 1995 film Braveheart, wearing a period-accurate, high-necked gown with a wimple head covering.
In 13th and early 14th Centuries, noblewomen typically wore high-necked, long-sleeved gowns with loose silhouettes that reflected both their social status and modesty expected at the time. Their hair was usually covered with veils or wimples, making the flowing hair and revealing dresses often seen in modern medieval films largely inaccurate.

Nigeria has a very high fertility rate of roughly 5 children per woman.
In contrast, European countries have very low fertility rates, often between 1.2 and 1.7 children per woman.
The key reason is age structure. Nigeria has a very young population, with a median age of about 18, while Europe’s median age is over 40. Even though Europe’s total population is more than 3 times larger, its aging demographic and low fertility result in far fewer births each year.

A 17th Century CE, lock that kept receipts...
This is a detector lock made by Birmingham locksmith John Wilkes around 1680. Its keyhole was hidden behind the figure’s leg, which could swing aside to reveal it. The hat and knob were part of the opening mechanism, while the small numbered dial recorded how many times the lock had been opened.
Long before digital access logs, this lock could tell an owner if a room had been entered while they were away.

The distance from Troy to Ithaca is about 560 nautical miles, with 1 nautical mile equal to roughly 1.15 miles or 1.85 kilometers.
Ancient ships are estimated to have sailed at around 4 to 6 knots, averaging about 5 knots. At that rate, they could cover up to about 100 nautical miles per day, meaning a direct journey without delays would take roughly 6 days, or about a week.
Flight time would be about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the specific route.

A theory suggesting the Great Sphinx of Giza was originally sculpted as a giant jackal representing the god Anubis, rather than featuring a human head...
This theory proposed by Robert Temple, the theory posits that the disproportionately small human head was re-carved from a much larger jackal head during a later dynasty. Anubis is the ancient Egyptian god associated with mummification and the afterlife, often depicted as a jackal.

This is a work from 1841 by the French architect and painter Hector Horeau. Its full title is usually given as "Temple of Abu Simbel, Egypt" or "Temples of Abu Simbel - Nubia, 1841". Horeau created this image for his album "Panorama d'Égypte et de Nubie" (Panorama of Egypt and Nubia), which consisted of watercolors and drawings he made during his travels in Egypt and Nubia (present-day southern Egypt and Sudan).

In 1960, Ormond Gigli turned a doomed row of New York brownstones into something unforgettable. With no budget, he gathered 43 women, gave them full creative freedom, and placed them in empty windows just hours before demolition. Shot from a fire escape, the result wasn’t just a photo—it was a fleeting moment of beauty, frozen seconds before it vanished forever.

German colonial officials ride zebras in Dar-es-Salaam, German East Africa (1914).
One major challenge for colonial powers in Africa was the difficulty of using horses, which were highly susceptible to tropical diseases, prompting efforts to breed disease-resistant hybrids by crossing zebras with horses, donkeys, and mules at places like this German stud farm. Despite extensive attempts, they ultimately discovered that the zebra’s stubborn, untamable temperament could not be bred out.

The oldest preserved wooden staircase in Europe (1344-1343 BC) was discovered within Hallstatt salt mines in Upper Austria.
The staircase was part of a vertical shaft system used by Bronze Age miners to transport salt from subterranean galleries. Its location within salt-rich environment contributed to its exceptional preservation, as salt inhibited growth of wood-decaying fungi. The structure remained intact until landslide in 1000 BC buried it, effectively preserving it for over 3,000 years.
