@nprofile…nuu0 Yes I'm imagining it as interacting gravitationally over the time period but not interacting via any other force. My handwavy argument is that gravity is just what happens when you travel in a straight line in a curved space and there's no escaping that effect, even for ephemeral hypothetical constructs, fictional objects, and the spectre of communism. I have no further arguments and rest my case.

event though it's not physically present for those 50 years... nothing is pressing down on the floor in that time, so it is also not pushing anything up, so logically speaking I would expect to exit the time machine at the Earth's core 🤔

@nprofile…nuu0 I get allergic reactions to most time travel stuff in media but this aspect I'll defend. There is no universal reference frame in the universe relative to which you could expect you would be stationary to during the period of time you're skipping. So _if_ you have a time machine, it's not far fetched that the exit location is at the point where you entered, keeping it gravitationally bound to the surface "during" the tine travel period.

@nprofile…nuu0 tbh I don't remember the details, just that I had issues with resources and signals in the past, but I think in my case it was because I _did_ do stuff with creating new resource objects from a template, loading, replacing nested resources etc.
I would expact load()ing a single tres to create just one instance but best to do a sanity check for this

@nprofile…nuu0 Spitballing but maybe it could also be an issue of connecting the signal on the wrong instance of the resource? Perhaps with load() you are somehow creating multiple instances of the resource and only connecting one while export ensures the reference is to the same instance or something like that... could be tested by printing something in the _init function. But idk, just a wild guess if race conditions are ruled out

As a spoiler, imo project architecture is mostly subjective and I'll mostly tell you that whatever works well for the way you think about things is best :P (but I'll try my best to look out for technical bits to think about too)

@nprofile…nuu0 It's not something you can easily play around with in a GDShader sadly because bloom depends on lower level shenanigans with multiple textures that are read and written in a chain, but you can hack the relevant glsl in the engine source code and recompile. It _should_ be a small change, if it's the same basic algorithm there is a radius somewhere in the upsampling step that offsets the UV, it should be made independent of pixel size

@nprofile…nuu0 Godot's strength slider adjusts both the radius and the intensity simultaneously for some reason, I only adjust the radius. Maybe the solution for Godot is to split that setting into two sliders, if their algorithm in the backend allows that

@nprofile…nuu0 Not sure what knobs Unity exposes but it uses the same algorithm (Dual Kawase), and Godot's is also very similar if not the same. If you find out what exactly the sliders you're missing do in Unity it should be portable

@nprofile…nuu0 I knew you would ask this :P The answer is kinda but not perfectly. For now I use an industry standard algorithm and just made the radius used during the upsampling pass resolution independent, but there are other factors influenced by resolution that I'm not sured yet how/if they can be tweaked. What I did is equivalent to adjusting the bloom strength in Godot based on resolution except that it works automatically.

I feel like the issue of input prompts with regards to this is unsolvable tbh, no idea what the "correct" way should even look like

@nprofile…wq0y AFAIK yes, but you have to use hacks to find the node of the run button in the editor's scene tree and then remove/modify/add signals on it. I don't think there is an API for finding a reference to that button that's guaranteed not to break across Godot versions though.

@nprofile…nuu0 I mean sure, like most popular scifi it asks you to suspend desbelief a lot - I just view it as a different universe with different history and laws of physics where it happens to be pretty easy to make a rocket go super fast, so the first mission could happen before they had an Einstein. But I get it, I for example can't watch Back to the Future :P

@nprofile…nuu0 I wonder how IRL magnets affect magnetic marbles - since they're spinning the north and south pole would keep alternating, so alternate between being pushed and pulled if the other magnet is static. If they have a stick magnet inside that is, but maybe they a shell of magnetic material where the south pole is pointing inside and northpole out? In any case hyper realistic calculations are gonna be hard and it's more intuitive for players to treat them like magnetic monopoles :P

@nprofile…nuu0 Afaik it's mostly for when you modify the UV in the standard material (scaling and translating), then the cached UV is the transformed one and "UV" stays as the original. I mostly just remove that base_uv thing and use UV everywhere when possible

Games I played in January: (1) Wanderstop
A game about a warrior who can no longer pick up her sword and reluctantly takes a break by brewing and serving tea.
I had heard about it multiple times but had dismissed it since cozy games aren't my thing. What sold it to me anyway was the fact that it's written by the same people as The Stanley Parable, and that it's supposedly made explicitely for people who don't think cozy games are for them.

I can suspend my disbelief for a bit if that's what the designers need me to do for gameplay purposes, especially if narrative isn't the main focus. A lot of my favorite games include combat, often as the main mechanic, but it's usually the part I care the least about. As long as it's not agonizingly janky or a complex math optimization problem it's fine for me. I think I see it more as a means for friction to give more meaning to the interesting parts of the game.

@nprofile…4m8e Ideally it would be a single hoop and you can just automatically run the profiling from code while they're playing and a text file appears in their Documents folder that they'd send you. I don't think anyone can expect you to handle this alone when you don't have the hardware, this is part of what testing is for imo

@nprofile…4m8e There's pros and cons to physics-based controllers. The kind that's usually implemented can do several physics steps when it's being processed instead of one, so it's good for complex behavior like stair stepping or custom stuff.
An idea that seems promising and I'll experiment with is putting a physics object inside the character controller so it can handle collisions with other rigid bodies while you still get maximum control

@nprofile…4m8e I think the main usecase for extensions is for addons you ship to other devs, so they can drop a library file into their project without using a custom build of godot. If what you add is exclusively for your own game that you ship and you compile the engine anyway (e.g. to remove features you don't use for a smaller binary) then modules are at least as good if not better afaik

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is an all time favorite and should be cheap by now if you get a used copy.

@nprofile…kksy Absolutely a bug, but I couldn't find any info on this. The few people who had a similar problem solved it by doing a favtory reset. Only explanation I can think.of is the backup triggered the temporary file cleanup system that for some reason doesn't run regularly as it should

I do not understand Android o_O
My phone started continuously bloating up storage in an inaccessible system directory. No idea what for. Took up most of my storage at 90+GB, making me delete photos constantly.
The _only_ solution I could find online was to do a full factory reset. So I just started doing a backup, this time with the built-in Seedvault function directly to my Nextcloud.
The "temporary system files" category is just... shinking during the backup?! It's down to 4GB :o

@nprofile…0kgd Thanks, but already tried that. I think it helped a little bit but still not enough to always stay over 50 FPS. My CPU should in theory clock up to 4.2 GHz but it never exceeds 4.05. Probably because ilthe cooling isn't good enough, although that doesn't explain why Elden Ring runs butter smooth on Windows

I got a new GPU! Initially I wanted to upgrade all parts at once, but I saw a decent deal on the used market so I took the opportunity. New unopened box including the receipt, over 50€ cheaper.
It's not doing much for me right now since I'm still CPU bottlenecked (or something cursed is going on), can't get stable 60 FPS in Elden Ring at any settings on Linux.
But at least I finally get to see what raytracing looks like!

@nprofile…0kgd The only real problem I've seen so far (not paying much attention though) is that the joysticks seem to be prone to drifting again. I've had to replace them so many times and attempted many repairs, but the drift always came back soon after :/
