It’s been a month since I moved. Putting everything else aside, I took this opportunity to continue my minimalism experiment. Sure, let’s call it that. Just a couple of thoughts.
I really like the ultrawide monitor. There’s no other screen to distract me, but there’s plenty of space to open windows.
As I said before, this is pure Void Linux — no Steam, no Wine — but that doesn’t help much with deciding what to play. Even if I ignore DOS and emulators, there are still too many games. 😖

It’s fun to think that the suspension of disbelief was invented.
It’s difficult to do that with theater for obvious reasons, but you can compare old and new fiction books. Nowadays, you’re immediately in the story, go-go-go. Back then, there would be a justification: Who is the narrator? Why are they telling the story? What is it about? Who it is intended for? An unskippable tutorial, if you will. And the language would not conceal the artificiality. It’s *a story*, there is *a narrator*.

But then you look at Garibaldi and think that he’s the kind of guy who would have a podcast (yes, in *that* way). Life itself isn’t so subtle.
(Explanation: Jerry Doyle, the actor, has a podcast. Yes, in *that* way.)

Here’s a trick I just learnt:
spawn-sh-at-startup "runsvdir -P ~/.local/service/"
You put that in #niri’s config (should work everywhere). Since you launch Niri as a user and Niri spawns it in its environment, this solves a lot of problems. Isn’t #runit neat?

For some reason, the GOG version wouldn’t work in #DOSBoxPure. However, there is an obscure website – the name begins with an “a” and ends with “rchive-dot-org” – with an old DOS version of the game.
Also, some time ago, I tested #KeeperFX on the #SteamDeck, and I was pleasantly surprised. You have to tweak the controls, but the default keyboard and mouse profile works well enough for both the RTS and FPS modes of the game.

The least boring part of this setup is that I turned my laptop into a Nintendo Switch. What do you mean, the name is taken? Fine, I’ll call it the Nintendo Switch 2! Happy?!
Basically, there are two magnetic USB-C plugs. One goes into a hub (USB switch to a keyboard and mouse, and HDMI), the other is just for power. Ideally, I would only need one plug, but none of my hubs (admittedly cheap) will charge the laptop for some reason. A problem for another day.

Joking aside, my setup is almost perfect with an external monitor. #wireplumber seems to be handling the audio, and #niri – the monitors, closing the lid, etc. #waybar gives the option to adjust some settings for different monitors while keeping everything else the same.
As an added bonus, having two windows side by side would give you a resolution of almost 1280×1024, which is nostalgic.

@nprofile…pqf3 Real time combat? We could get too deep into the weeds here, but I think of CRPGs as only turn-based, with the active pause of Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, etc., as a separate but related branch.
A rough definition (lines are always blurry, of course) is a game with turn-based combat, a character creator, somewhat free progression, and skills that work outside of combat, providing multiple ways to solve a problem. Fallout, basically.

@nprofile…cqtz In theory, Niri should move all workspaces to an existing monitor when one disconnects and put them back when it reconnects. I’m not sure how reliable it is because I just started using a two-monitor setup.
Another thing that can help is an “open-or-focus” script that opens a program or switches to it if it is already open. That way, you can at least find the program quickly :)

2026-08-18 17:12:00 UTC

@nprofile…cqtz What kind?
You can reduce the number of keyboard shortcuts by using “-or-” commands, such as “focus-column-or-monitor-left”.
You can set the horizontal struts to 0 and set one of the preset-column-widths and the default-column-width to “0.99” to leave gaps for viewing the focus ring.
You should dig into "niri msg" to write your own scripts to add features that you think are missing or difficult to achieve otherwise.

Valve is steadily releasing updates to #gamescope, making the DIY #SteamMachine more and more viable. In fact, I’d say they’re almost on par right now: there are some benefits to going with an official machine/distro, and there are some benefits to building one yourself/choosing a distro you like better.
The latest thing they fixed was my biggest complaint: how the gamepad would change back to the default preset for no reason. Now, the only issue is the glitchy UI – a minor annoyance at best.

Most of the changes are hard to show. For example, since you can do “focus-column-or-monitor-left” and “move-column-left-or-to-monitor-left,” I drastically reduced the number of #niri keybindings to what I think I will actually use. I kept the logic of “Mod+” for navigation, “Mod+Ctrl+” for movement.
I also didn’t want to cover a great wallpaper: https://www.mattvince.com/product/zelda-x-ghibli-desktop-wallpaper/ There’s more! It asks for an email, but you know about “10 minute email,” right? ;)

No dealbreakers, but I think it’s important to mention that there are some problems.
No sound from the laptop’s speakers, a known bug. HDMI and audio jack work perfectly, which is what I want.
I gave up on figuring out the signals (the thing you send to a program – waybar). There are a million ways to do something, I’m fine.
Styling, ugh… That gave me more reason to keep it minimal. As I said before, besides web browsers and image editors, I avoid anything GUI now.

#fuzzle is fun! I immediately made an emoji picker:
`Mod+Period { spawn-sh "uni emoji all -f '%(emoji) %(name) %(cldr_full)' | fuzzel -d | awk '{print $1}' | wl-copy"; }`
…and clipboard manager:
`Mod+V { spawn-sh "cliphist list | fuzzel -d | cliphist decode | wl-copy"; }`

#mako is pretty simple but has a reasonable amount of configurability. You can customize how different notifications behave. For example, you can create volume and brightness sliders, place them in the middle of the screen, and make them disappear. All others would remain in the top right corner until dismissed.

Okay, #waybar… I’m not complaining, but I’m baffled by it. It’s as if someone decided #Conky was perfect, just arranging things horizontally was difficult. There are no modern niceties of any kind. Fine, now I have a multi-command script. It checks if the configuration was updated and reloads Waybar. It pulls some custom info. It even renders the clock because displaying the time as “9:30” instead of “09:30” is apparently problematic.

There is an infinite horizontal line of windows and an infinite vertical column of those lines. The navigation is simple and easy to grasp (the default bindings are perfect). Occasionally, I still move in the wrong direction, but it is very quick, so I only waste a couple of keystrokes and a little time.
Just one complaint: there is no “open or focus” command, so I made my own. As a bonus, it opens a new tab in the browser if the last item in the clipboard is a URL.

At least let me write something… As always, questions are welcome.
So, #niri. Why a window manager (compositor) instead of a desktop environment? It seems like the next logical step in choosing everything I want. I’m not going to rant about everything that’s happening in here this our neck of the software woods, but that’s feels like the only reason left to choose Linux over anything else.
And niri makes much more sense to me than tiling wm’s.

It seems to me that progress is when people improve their lives a little, giving them the resources to improve their lives even more.
So what if billionaires finally convince politicians to tax them? Some of that money will go toward a universal basic income, another idea supported by billionaires. And while we’re at it, how about a four-day workweek?
I would say that’s a plausible scenario we can work toward.

`ls | each { update name ( open $in.name ) }`
That alone gets you (OK, me) about 75 percent of the way to a working notes system. A scratchpad, if you will.
#nushell is neat.

We need a franchise like #TheExpendables, but with women. #HalleBerry will gather everyone, as Stallone. #MichelleYeoh would play Lundgren as a no-nonsense veteran. #AngelinaJolie would play Willis, but with longer hair. #NicoleKidman would play Statham: white, but with an accent. #JenniferLopez would represent music. In a twist, #JamieLeeCurtis would play the antagonist. #LindaHamilton would make a cameo. At some point, the whole cast of #Oceans8 would pass by, like that bit in #ShaunOfTheDead.

I don’t plan on playing games on this machine. I was just testing my script for downloading AppImages. I swear!

For reasons, I’ve been neglecting to write about what I’ve been doing. I’ll catch up at some point, at least with the more interesting parts. But, ignoring the “why, ” let me at least explain the “what” (you can play detective and figure out the hardware).
Unsurprisingly, this is #VoidLinux with #niri, #waybar, #mako for notifications, and #fuzzel for the app launcher. Besides browsers and graphics editors, I only have a couple of GUI programs installed.

@nprofile…zg5y If by “demo” you mean PrimeHack, a version of the Dolphin emulator that lets you play the first three games with a regular controller, or keyboard and mouse, then yes, there is a demo :)
