NOW I am discovering totally at random that Gimp has an HSV noise filter?!
And this never came up once in the weeks and possibly months I was searching for a way to achieve randomized hue, saturation, and value variations on every pixel? None in any of the "Make retro textures in GIMP" guides?
How?!
I could really have used this one year ago! 😭 😖 😵

I find it interesting how many indie game developers seem to make and release their games basically anonymously.
I'm almost never able to find any kind of information on who is making these games other than the name of the team. People like David Szymanski or Chris Hunt seem to be the exception.
Is that typical for creatives on the internet?

8k png PBR materials coming in at 1 gigabyte are just insane.
Who are those for? Anyone who would need this much fidelity would also have to have a very broad library of materials.
Who can afford to store all this?! 😅

Creating a shader in Blender or Godot instead of making a new texture file in Gimp always feels like creating a program for 10 hours that can automate a 2 minute task. 😑

A stealth game where you can switch off or destroy every light is a really cool idea.
But now mocking up a simple factory with a container yard, that's going to be a LOT of lights! 💡💡💡
Even with low-fidelity graphics, this already has me somewhat worried. 😰

#Godot question:
Is it possible to modify a Blender object that has already been imported into Godot and added to scenes without having to delete all instances of the object and deleting it from the project, and then importing the new version and putting it back into scenes?
One would assume that Reimport would do that, but it doesn't.

2026-10-26 10:26:59 UTC

Nice. I don't know why I never thought of it, but when Blender accepts "43+15" or "pi" as number input into fields, it also accepts "1/4" or any other ratios.
This comes very handy for my powers of 2, base 8, ancient Greek geometry approach I started using for modeling. So much easier than dealing with decimals.
(Already have the grid size changed from 10 to 8 by default.)

There were a lot of JRPGs on the SNES, Mega Drive, and PS1, and for the outside observer, they all look visually very similar.
Back in the 90s, was there a sense of being a glut of them with Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Shin Megami Tensei, Breath of Fire, Mana, Fire Emblem, Earthbound, Chrono, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Evermore, Suikoden, Tales of Phantasia, Dragon Force, Star Ocean, Wild Arms, Grandia, and so on...?

What a crazy coincidence!
I only learned about Derelikt like a week ago, but it's graphics are the closest thing to my visual style I've been forming for my own game over the last two years.
And turns out it's being made by a guy in Hamburg, the next city over, an hour drive from me. 😄

2026-10-24 16:44:32 UTC

I really only started learning the technical aspects of video game development not even six months ago, and already I got so many obstacles solved:
✅ Static environment objects
✅ Software rendering style textures
✅ Trim sheets
✅ Open-world terrain
✅ Terrain textures
✅ Lighting
✅ Day-Night-Cycle
✅ Animated skyboxes
✅ Water shaders
✅ Character models
✅ Character faces
Making a walking animation and have a character walk in a circle in Godot seems like a good next target to tackle.

This is something that I build over the last one and a half days and that I am really proud of.
It may not look like it, but this is a machine that turns a high-polygon head model into a low-polygon model with a single .png texture file. The six cameras let me quickly take a render of every side of the head, which I grid-align in a Gimp file to create the texture.
Then I retopologize a new low poly head this texture goes on.

#Blender question time.
When I render this model of a head with different camera positions, the shadows and highlights come out different, which becomes very emphasized when converting to 16 colors. In this example, the side of the head next to the eyes is highlighted in front view, but shadowed in side view.
Is there something in the material or camera settings that can make the color on any point of the model fixed regardless of perspective? Roughness is already at 1.

A question to all the #gameart, #photography, and #lighting people here:
I am not good at hand painting textures, so for my game I want to use downsampled renders of 3D heads for my texture files. However, I know nothing about lighting and right now I have three area lights surrounding the head from slightly above, because that looks what photographers have in their studios.
What can I do to create shadows and highlights that bring out facial structures without being too harsh?

Why bone rotation in 3D space so complicated?! 😭

2026-10-22 11:39:28 UTC

That's about me right now.
It's working! The lack of a face texture is still pulling it down, but I think this is really going well. This is about as extreme as I expect any character animations to get, and there's no weird stretching or any tearing between the five individual meshes.
The ellbows got twisted because I rotated them on global axes, but I think you can make them into hinges instead of ball joints for keyframe posing.

Quite remarkable that this wave of former glory could have been ridden for this long.

2026-10-21 16:11:02 UTC

State of things after three days of work on my base character model, fully rigged and weight painted.
This comes apart into body, legs, arms, and head, and the black vest is an attached item that goes over the upper body. This allows switching out upper and lower body clothes, and heads.
The next step is to use transforms of the length and thickness of bones to create the different body types of most of the alien species. So all clothes items should shape themselves to all characters.

2026-10-21 14:21:41 UTC

Exploring the texture files of older games from the 90s, I am wondering why they would often atomize their textures into such very small pieces instead of doing trim sheets.
A particularly extreme example is the big mech from Metal Gear Solid. It's the big star of the game, but it has 338 texture files, and it appears only in a single room where it's mostly motionless. It's not like any of these pieces would appear anywhere else separately from each other.

Working on the master character body mesh that all other character models will be modifications of, I am reminded of what I have heard several sword makers say:
"Making a sword is one hour at the forge, followed by one week of increasingly smaller files and finer sand paper."
I've been moving vertices on this one model for three days. I'm not even having a bad time, and I think it's shaping up better and betters. But it's also still 95% the same model as two days ago. 😮‍💨

2026-10-21 11:58:30 UTC

Opinions needed.
Which belt position looks more correct?
Such a small difference, but both look odd, and this model will be the basis to which all clothing items will be tailored. I really want to get this right, because redoing it later will be a pain in the ass.

I would like to have clothes with meshes for wide sleeves, skirts, backpacks, and so on that can be added to different character models and automatically stretch to match the ways in which the current character model is different from the default character model.
Is this doable? What would be the tools for this?

The trees are only know starting to show the first hints of yellow.

This is super cool. I'm really proud of how well this turned out, and really all that's left is to somehow get the ring and the space station behind the clouds with the moon.

SVIW 3D was released 30 years ago in November 1996.
This is a rather obscure game, but one that's been stuck in my mind for ages. We played it for a bit maybe two times at a friend's house between TIE Fighter, Descent 2, and Worms, and I think it wasn't very fun. But the visuals stuck with me and I've been trying to figure out what it was for ages, until someone on Mastodon suggested it as fitting my description a year ago.

As much as I'd like to make my own sky for my game in Godot, since I'm already using the free Terrain3D plugin for the terrain, I might as well use the Sky3D plugin from the same developer as well. 😄
Even with that, I'm still probably needing the sky object system I created over the last two days anyway.

I think "Programming is hard" should become a new phrase to quote in conversation about bad software development for decades to come. It's just so funny in how bland a sentence it is for describing a huge underlying structural problem in the software development world.

So that's why that Halo game is called that. (Even though made by developers with no connection to Marathon.)

Turning the lightest colors of an image in Gimp fully opaque and the darkest colors fully transparent always sounds so easy when people describe it. ("Color to Alpha, done." Add Layer Mask, done.")
But somehow none of these work on my image.

It always amazes me how many long and troublesome problems in Godot end up with the solution of "check that box".
Like the box is asking you "are you trying to do that complicated thing?" and if you say yes, it does the entire process for you.
This post is brought to you by "Back Lighting: On".

I would never have thought that this would be an issue that would be really difficult to find any information on. But maybe some of the Godot people here know:
How would one add moons and other objects to the sky in a Godot 3D scene?🤔
I thought you make a decal of the object and somehow place it on the sky, but I am coming up completely empty. Not one description anywhere on how to add a moon to the sky.

When I was thinking about the final decision for a 90s retro-graphic style to emulate for my game a year ago, it was a really close call between a PS1/id Tech 2 look and a UE1 look.
PS1 look won out just barely, with the tipping factor being that the the UE1 creator Tim Sweeny was running Epic, which seemed a bit dodgy as a company and emulating him would feel a bit icky.
Oh man, did I make the right choice.
(Though id Tech creator John Carmack is also a total AI bro.)

Something funny about learning to make my own textures and 3D models and using GDscript for free at the same time as the old computer people are paying a lot of money to unlearn how to make anything.

With Screen-Space Ambient Occlusions and Screen-space Indirect Lighting, and just a little hint of fog, the game currently looks like this.
Which is a look I am actually quite happy about and is already fancier than what I was aiming for.
I think I can get away with real time dynamic lighting for sunlight, moonlight, and a few streetlights.

Given that I am already constructing my models for my game mostly by scaling different things as being double or a quarter the size of each other, constantly snapping everything to the grid, and I'm aligning UVs to be exactly 64x64 pixels per square meter, I am seriously considering to switch Blender to an 8-based grid.
Like a true ultra geometry nerd. 😆

Some positive progress on the lighting for #IridiumMoons
Simply turning on SSAO makes a big visual difference in smaller space. And for some reason, SSIL now also seems to work. (Got weird blobby light spots earlier.)
I like that. I could live with this as the basic ambient light.

I feel I am currently at a stage with Iridium Moons where I am working entirely on the technical side of things, but not working with the world. I am enjoying seeing the fast progress on the things I am working on, but they are still so basic and abstract that I don't see any of the ideas of the setting in it yet.
Which is frustrating, but for now it's still motivating me to get all the tools set up for the really good part that comes after. I can't wait to see my ideas on screen! 🥹

2026-10-11 15:21:44 UTC

A very basic #Godot question I can never find the answer for:
If you have a 3D game in Godot that has a sun that is moving through the sky, can any of the methods be used to reduce light calculations, or does all lighting automatically have to be done 100% dynamically through brute force?
#gamedev #GodotEngine

2026-10-11 12:30:08 UTC

Muahahahaha!
After learning to shape the Earth and moving the Water, I am now controlling the light of the Sun! ☀️🔥🎇
Global Illumination is totally not what they did in 1999, but lighting #IridiumMoons is the one area where I knew from the very beginning that I would be going nuts with whatever tools Godot is going to hand me.
90s graphics with modern lighting was the plan all along.
Now I just need to make trees that sway in the wind, and I will have mastered all four elements.

This is the UV of the cube at the bottom and half a sphere at the top.
The circle on the bottom of the dome has the same diameter as the squares. But the strips that make up the dome are scaled down 50%. Each strip is now half as wide as one edge of the circle.
And with this setup, it looks correct.
I suspect an optical illusion caused by the warping of the squares that make up the dome. It should be mathematically correct halfway up the dome, but it somehow looks right at the bottom too.

2026-10-11 09:39:41 UTC

Grrr.... head hurts. 🤕
I got an 8 meters per side cube, and an 8 meters diameter UV-sphere. This means the UV edges of the sphere's equator need to be 3.141 (pi) times wider on the UV map than the edges on the cube. The edges from pole to pole need to be 1.57 (pi/2) times the length of a cube edge.
But why does the texture only look correctly scaled if it 's 1.57 (pi/2) times as wide and 0.7535 (pi/4) times as high?!
The math is so simple. Why is this happening?! 😅

2026-10-11 07:02:58 UTC

I don't even know why I like the look of unfiltered textures. What's really the aesthetic appeal in this?
It's made a big comeback in the last 8 years, so I am very much not alone with this.
Though I do wonder if most people who are really into this also got into games in the late 90s, when developers slapped early filters on low-resolution pixel art textures, and the N64 was the N64?
It just looked like shit.

Today's progress has been a clean and much, much, much simpler rebuild of a modular system for hallways and stairs for the palaces of the Oligarchs of Sarhat.
Since everything is Boolean modifiers, lined duplicate objects, and two geometry nodes (total nodes, not node systems) I can adjust the number of arch segments or stairs height with one click retroactively for an entire palace. Which I am unreasonably proud of. 😁✨
