Visiting Hampshire this weekend to say goodbye, I was struck by the sense memory of having been somewhere, once, where I was trusted and supported by the institution & community as a whole. Where everyone believed that me following my interests, values and passions was not a threat to others but a benefit to them. Where I could find & be my authentic self and that was inherently a gift to others.
So much of the world, even good places and good people, are pervaded by a sense of precarity. A feeling like you have to justify yourself to deserve support. If I can find more ways to bring that sense memory, that ethos and lived practice, into our needlessly precarious world, then I can think of no better way to keep Hampshire alive

We live in a world of ever increasing abstraction held together by human trust in all the joints and footings.
AI and other technologies that abstract away and replace human connection are quickly eroding all the load bearing bits.

People can only take in information that they have capacity to deal with the emotional consequences of. The tone that you share information in greatly influences who will take it in. An optimistic tone will decrease the chance that cynics will take it in, and vice versa. A shaming or righteous tone will increase intake by people who feel righteous and greatly decrease intake by people who feel like the target of the shame or righteousness.

I find myself struggling a lot lately with the way American individualism / neoliberalism / the nuclear family model (& also the breakdown of it + rise of two income families) / the hollowing out of third spaces and community groups leads to life being just so overwhelming with so much STUFF individuals need to do.
I wonder if folks have recommendations for writers/thinkers who talk about this? I have a vague sense of the historical forces behind it but would love to learn in more detail.

2026-06-26 15:09:54 UTC

Anyone else deeply get why people want to cognitively offload everything they can to AI?
The world is So Much right now. We're all juggling a thousand tasks and chores. Why is my tablet not charging? Why wasn't my prescription filled yesterday? Gotta pay my quarterly estimated taxes, find a new trimmer for the parts of the lawn the mower can't reach, make a dentist appointment cause I'm grinding my teeth at night.
New technologies and productivity gains never lead to real ease in our lives. Capitalism greedily gobbles up the difference. It sells us new tools "oh this will make things easier" and we do it because we need it, we're hovering on the edge of burn out, but the end result is we drift further from each other. We replace the resilience of relationships with the fragility of a tool, an app.
The problem isn't people. Please don't shame folks for trying to get by. Shame only adds to the overwhelm and sense of isolation. It perpetuates the system, it doesn't dismantle it.

I miss control+alt+delete so bad.
As websites get more and more bloated and software gets more janky, I hate having to restart my computer anytime a single process (almost always a browser) hangs so badly I can't navigate to a terminal window.
If I can't find a fix to this before I get my next computer I will probably stop using linux. I told a friend about this the other day and they were like "how do you live like that" 😭

"Empowering people to X" can be profoundly disempowering if people don't want to X and feel pressure to do it anyway through culture, technological design or societal design.
In an ideal world people can choose between agency and delegation as they personally desire but as you may have noticed we don't live in an ideal world.
The ability to say "ugh, can someone else deal with this" is empowering. Not least because of the bond it can create between you and the person doing the thing for you.

But also...as long as I'm alive I will carry Hampshire with me. The school might be closing, but it leaves behind fifty years of alumni. The living legacy of Hampshire that both refuses to conform and refuses to live in fear of others. That knows - to know is not enough. We'll carry Hampshire with us and maybe, someday, build a new Hampshire.
(Which should definitely be called New Hampshire College. That won't be confusing at all.)
In the meantime...thank you, Hampshire College. You weren't perfect, but you were what I needed: an institution and a community that accepted me and supported me for who I am. You will be deeply deeply missed.

Hampshire gave me the confidence and the support I needed to think for myself and be myself. It gave me hope that we can at the very least carve out pockets of the world where you don't have to choose between autonomy and connection, self-agency and the supporting the agency and flourishing of others.
I would not be the person I am today without Hampshire. I would be a much smaller, much sadder, much more pessimistic person.
I am grieving very strongly the sense of hope that Hampshire represents to me. What kind of world do we live in, that a place like Hampshire can't survive? A world of fear, a world of conformity, a dog-eat-dog world.

Within two weeks of arriving at Hampshire I had made some of the closest friends I've ever had - friends I still see and talk to all the time.
By the end of my time at Hampshire, I'd thrown myself into dozens of amazing learning experiences, from researching ancient sumer and writing a novella set there, to sticking electrodes on people's heads while researching punishing behavior. Plus collecting spit. I collected so much spit.
(I was measuring salivary hormone levels, if you must know.)

2026-04-16 15:09:32 UTC

I had a pretty unhappy childhood. I struggled to fit in with my peers or find a place I belonged in my small, rural, conservative home town. When I moved to DC my horizons broadened a lot but I was still missing that sense of possibility. I felt weird and lonely and like the world wasn't built for people like me. I was depressed. I never graduated high school.
Going to Hampshire College felt almost like a fairytale. Like the reverse of the life I lived before. Suddenly I was surrounded by weird people. Suddenly I was part of a community that said, "We don't want to tell you how to be. We want to support you as you figure out how to be."

2026-04-15 00:52:35 UTC

It says something about why I'm still on Facebook, that my feed there is post after post after post mourning Hampshire's closing and I have seen not a single post on my feed here.
I'll make one myself eventually. It is hard to put into words how deeply and dramatically Hampshire changed my life for the better, but I'll manage it at some point.

there was one (1) very specific banner-making request that went unfulfilled this week for lack of capacity (RIP the "free portland free dc" sign for the spirit-thorns home opener tonight) but that's it for standard activism tasks
key activist skills i need: project management skills, ability and willingness to show up to places on time and with things you promised to show up with, artistic abilities, event planning abilities, training and mentorship abilities

What's happening in Minnesota is an escalation of things that have happened in other cities - Chicago, Portland, LA, DC. It could be coming to your city next.
I don't say that to scare you. But it might be good to ask yourself:
If this was happening in my neighborhood, who would I reach out to? How would I take action? Who would I trust?
Start building those connections now. If you already have some, strengthen them.

I used one of those Amazon "just walk out" stores at the airport a couple months ago and it overcharged me by $30. Just made up the amount.
Tried to dispute it with my credit card company but, of course, I didn't have a receipt, so they refused. So I guess my money's just Amazon's now.
Just a warning for folks: DO NOT USE THESE. I only did it because I was in a rush and about to get on a 6 hour flight (I genuinely forgot that you can just buy food on the flight, please don't judge me.)

This advice is dependent on AI-induced errors being treated as an externality and thus not something the company is liable for.
I dearly hope that this does not become the case - the limited liability of corporations is bad enough. If companies are given any kind of legal pass for AI mistakes and hallucinations...
Somebody always has to bear the pain of mistakes. Capitalism and AI could combine to make sure the wealthy are never that person.

He wrote a number of plays (& screenplays) of note but for me the work that will always stick with me is Arcadia. I read it as a teenager and have seen it performed several times as an adult. There are certain stories that evoke a feeling so sharply and strongly that they come to define that emotion for you. Arcadia is one of those stories for me.
Rest in peace, Tom Stoppard. I hope some day to write a story that has touched people the way your work has.

My take on empathy - and people on the right who mock and fear empathy - is slightly different.
We mock, dismiss, and otherwise fear and fight in others what we are unable to tolerate in ourselves.
People who say something's "cringe" when others are being earnest or sincere are afraid of the vulnerability that comes with sincerity. People who call empathy "suicidal" are afraid of the vulnerability that comes with empathizing with others.

Whether it's the loss of unions or churches as a major part of progressive life, the need to ask neighbors for help rather than using lyfts and taskrabbits, the need to meticulously and collaboratively plan a rally rather than just create a Facebook event, or a practice of grace and understanding rather than cancel culture, the left is missing a deep structural and cultural ability to cooperate with each other.

Cory Booker talking about his dad's Alzheimer's is more eloquent, moving, tear-inducing and laughter-inducing than I or most people could be, and he's been talking for nearly 25 hours

FYI Cory Booker has been fillibustering on the floor of the senate for the last 20 hours, you can watch live here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCUK2VbdLS4

Does anyone know of a cross-platform list of most popular media channels? Something that would cross things like youtube, tiktok, podcasts, radio, tv, etc. Basically I'd like to see a list of the people who are reaching the most other people.

There's value in concepts like tone policing and phrases like "not my job to explain it to you" but they also establish a norm on the left that it's wrong to want people to speak to you kindly or to ask questions.
Sometimes people are so angry about injustices they're experiencing that they can't speak kindly. Sometimes they're so tired they can't explain.
That's ok. We don't need to demand perfection. Of them—or of the person who wants to be treated with kindness & allowed to ask questions.

Is there a Fediverse service that allows you to only post to a list of people and/or custom group? Facebook has had this for ages but I believe Mastodon doesn't.
Being able to post to custom lists of follows would help me engage with people on here in healthier ways. For example, when venting, I'd love to be able to limit to friends who I trust not to "well, actually" me (or with whom I care enough to repair with if they do). Instead I often just don't post at all.

Someone posted this graph with the title "Worst Intersections in DC" and I was like "Blair/Cedar/4th better be on it". And it was! Validation! It's so bad I call it the Boston Intersection

Not sure why Mastodon only shows you a list of people who you'll lose contact with when a server is blocked *after* you block the server and thus can't contact them! Also apparently if the server gets un-blocked the relationships aren't automatically restored?
*long, painful grimace*
I have so much appreciation and care for everyone involved in building these tools but also: product design and ux is HARD.

TIL there's a Pulitzer Prize for criticism. On the one hand, I think it's a valid and important category of writing that should be honored. On the other hand, I can't even imagine how steamed I'd be if someone got a Pulitzer for criticizing me

Do you know of open source environmental projects that can use funding?
https://openclimate.fund is looking to give 100€ each to up 100 open source environmental projects
This is their first funding round - the hope is for the initiative to grow in the future and get these projects more substantial support

This one hurts worse than Morgan and Sinc and Pinoe combined. And of course she chose to bow out without a farewell game.
Truly the end of an era.

My gas furnace is struggling and I was thinking of replacing it with a heat pump, but apparently my ducts can't handle the high efficiency version. So no tax credits or rebates for me, guess they're hoping I'll do it out of the goodness of my heart.

The open source community I co-maintain uses two major hosting services, in addition to our technical hosting (github/pypi/dockerhub etc).
One is a proprietary for-profit company that was free to sign up for (Slack). Another is an open source non-profit company that we paid monthly to host us (PubPub).
Both have degraded their services over time. Both I would never work with again if given a choice.

Did you know Pro Publica has an online form that lets you easily request all the notes and documents your insurer used to deny you coverage?

The thing about AI being wrong and harmful sometimes is...a lot of tech is wrong and harmful sometimes. AI is not a sea change so much as an intensification. It's the same forces gobbling up wealth and power in order to insulate themselves from the consequences of doing wrong.
Healthy societies, relationships, technologies, etc are based around identifying, acknowledging and repairing harm when it happens. Whereas everything today seems based around having the power to ignore harm.

Thoughts so far:
- loving the Alyssa Thompson rennessaince
- conversely Emma Sears clearly needs more time to grow
- Coffey is low key just as much a chaos gremlin as Sonnett or Hal, don't let the shirt tuck fool you
- I love Naomi Girma
- I love Rose Lavelle

Anyone have recommendations for open source alternatives to google forms?
I need email notifications when a new form is submitted, ideally without extra configuration (baserow lets you get email notifications with zapier but I'd love to not have to fiddle with that)

As someone whose beloved soccer team was *just* beaten in a championship on a lone goal by Barbra Banda, may I say...
JK Rowling and all the other TERFs should take their bitter, fearful, regressive gender politics and get them the hell away from women's sports. WoSo is a beautiful, welcoming, queer-affirming space and we don't need JKR's protection. All she's protecting is her ego.
Congrats to Banda on the championship & on being the best female footballer in the world.
