My take on empathy - and people on the right who mock and fear empathy - is slightly different.
We mock, dismiss, and otherwise fear and fight in others what we are unable to tolerate in ourselves.
People who say something's "cringe" when others are being earnest or sincere are afraid of the vulnerability that comes with sincerity. People who call empathy "suicidal" are afraid of the vulnerability that comes with empathizing with others.
