I think, when GW Bush said "is our children learning," there was a pause, as his head thought, "It says are our! Ar ar! The press is going to call me a trained seal! Ar ar! Well, I'll fix them!" And out came "is our."
People should beg me to write their biographies - or, better yet, ghostwrite their autobiographies!

If you're thinking of installing jitsi-meet on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, don't. If anything breaks, it's a mess. In my case, prosody refuses to start, blaming a missing file. If I purge, it's still missing the file. If I remove every f*ing prosody-anything from anywhere (except PeerTube), it finally says there is nothing wrong and I can run apt again. If I try to install prosody after that, it's right back to where it was.
It ran fine in 24.04 LTS. It does not start, blaming a missing file (and who knows what else after it is satisfied that the file exists). To wit:
require "prosody.loader";
What provides it? Not prosody, apparently. Theirs is not the greatest documentation for errors like this.

Which judge doesn't know by now that you MUST spell out every detail to the corrupt pigs from the federal government or they will go ahead with whatever illegality America's dictatorship demands of its flunkies?
It isn't just Trump. Those trees weren't felled by his precious offspring. They were felled by the same kinds of people destroying the Amazon, and for the same reason - they got paid to do it.
Capitalism and fascism are twins. One of them is "kinder, gentler" conservatism, because you all get really pissy when the fascism hits all at once. They took turns, the 2 parties. Slowly. Incrementally. Started in earnest with tort reform to keep people from suing corrupt companies out of existence. That old way of suing seems to have offended the rich.

The Guardians' first batter in the bottom of the 8th drew a walk, so Adrian Houser, who had pitched extremely well for 5 innings, but was no doubt tiring, was replaced on the mound by Dylan Smith, who proceeded to throw a wild pitch, advancing the runner, then strike out the first batter he faced. And the second. And the third.

After experiencing it, my strong advice is to not combine even the first Shingrix vaccine with any other. Aches, pains, chills, mild fever. It's enough, all by itself.
I got some sleep. I feel a bit better than I did late yesterday. Still some occasional aches. Part of that might be due to me falling asleep lying on the arm that was sore from the vaccination.
I have no circadian rhythm after yesterday. Random napping, ftw!
It provides the patient with a mild zombie experience, if I may be so bold. "Right foot. Ugh. Left foot. Ugh."
You will be useless, but people will be aware of your presence because of your occasional groans and teeth chattering.

@nprofile…t2gq If those are real plate numbers, someone could get into real trouble by having their car identified in the vicinity of a crime scene by someone wearing a shirt. It would be a trivial way for some to shift blame onto innocent people, who would then have to fight in court to prove that their car was not there, by which time they've probably lost their job and home. I certainly hope they are not.

When the president does it, and there are videos, so the files with images and videos of the CIC were given to the president's lackeys, and they refuse to release them to the pubic, unredacted, despite a unanimous congressional demand, that means, ala Nixon, that it's not illegal, and the poor adult child was simply searching for images of mama's hero in action.

@nprofile…d0yj I think it would be less effective than desired. It might need a lot of database fetches. Sysadmins would want it to be a one-time thing, so it probably would need storage on your PC.
Envisioning it for just the live feed, counting what happens per day, likes and retoots, then sorting before displaying would be pretty easy to code, and not a resource hog. Getting more than that would seem to be the thing of optimization nightmares, the way Fediverse data is spread across servers.

In the bottom of the 5th, in a scoreless game, Jung Hoo Lee singled, and was bunted to 2nd by Daniel Susac. Drew Gilbert, alerted that this "getting a hit" sort of thing was actually possible, hit a popup to LF. Jung Hoo Lee, not waiting to see if the popup would land or not, took off, mostly because nobody was covering 2nd base anyway. It fell in. He scored. Gilbert had a double. It was 1-0 Giants over the Cubs.
Up swaggered Matt Chapman. "What's this doubles business? I think I'll try." Try, he did. He hammered a 107 MPH line drive over the fence in CF, scoring himself and Gilbert, making it 3-0 Giants.
Luis Arraez grounded out.
Bryce Eldridge drew a walk. He has a very good eye.
Rafael Devers liked what he saw, so he also drew a walk.
With 2 outs, and runners on 1st and 2nd, Casey Schmitt was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Willy Adames.

Poof go the 200,000 barrels of oil a day. If the state put up the money, contractor time constraints and Donald Trump's insane tariffs/petty grievances would seem to be the only limiting factors. Contractors would pour into California to get licensed. Maybe the state could offer emergency credentials like teachers get when they're needed, and there isn't time for them to finish college courses.

We have no checks and balances. The 21st century's curtain fell. The masks are off. We are ruled over by an oligarchy. A fascist nation to our core. Anything else was forced upon the fascists, who cannot lose the long game here, for they control money. Democrats are a weakling opposition party.
Our leaders are immoral. Our opposition is inept. Our people are awash in digitized lies. Truth is drowning.
Money, child rape, and power. The New American Century, as crafted by the big money from the old American century.

I've tried being the nice guy. Now I block all hustlers. I don't care if your plea is money, insulin, food, or "Pampers for my baby," as one Los Angeles hustler tried. You're not from Gaza. Possibly Geneva. More likely Gator Corner, USA. Insulin again? F off.
The most legitimate hustler I ever met was in Santa Barbara. "Money for drugs?" Honesty is often referred to as the best policy. We were taught it always was, but then we met CEOs, CTOs, political parties, and the internet.

Watching a video of hail falling today in Springtown Tx. Looked like tennis ball sized at biggest, though I think I heard that it was larger at one point.

120-108 Spurs win in Portland, taking a 2-1 lead in the 7-game series. The Blazers shot poorly in the 4th, and began to tire as the game went on. The Spurs began to get very easy shots. Every shot the Blazers took seemed like it was challenged, the later it got to be. The Blazers didn't have a way to adjust for exhaustion. This was a very physical game. I expect the next 2 (at least) will be, too.

Because of war and the machinery of war, neither the Pentagon nor any other military on the face of this planet will give up oil, so we hippies can go take a hike, as far as they're concerned. If we all want to get along, we can eliminate fossil fuel use, and rapidly begin to heal the climate, soil, and water. I have it on good authority that, in the history of the human race, we have never once all gotten along.
We also are primates who like things that go boom, and get all sparkly.
So, fellow primate, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find a way for all of the lunatics who rule our nations, and all of the billionaires itching to become trillionaires, and all of the rest of us who just want to live decent lives, to truly live as one so that we have no inclination to war. Only then will the refineries stop.
Wait. Spoke too soon. Now we also have to get rid of AI. And a sky covered in falling satellites. Oh, and data centers in space. Ah, and hotels in the clouds of Venus. And Elon the Martian...
I should make a list.

From Sabine's email for the day:
Researchers from OpenAI have put forward an industrial policy for artificial intelligence and it’s quite a read. They propose a legally recognised “Right to AI,” meaning broad public access to powerful systems, backed by government-funded compute resources so that researchers, startups, and public institutions can run models themselves, rather than rely on a few companies.
To make this reality, they want to see an expansion of electricity supply for data centres by fast-tracking nuclear and renewables. They also suggest a national wealth fund that captures a share of AI-driven profits and redistributes it to citizens, alongside taxes or levies on highly automated systems, effectively a “robot tax”.
Of course none of that has any chance of happening, but OpenAI can now claim they care about the common man.

@nprofile…p25k I download with yt-dlp, but the one bundled in Linux Mint gave me problems, so I installed the one from their github repository. It works very well for me.
Now that I've gotten rid of Mint on this PC, and made it Ubuntu, I get to do it again. Thanks for reminding me to do it before I need it for a project! 👍

We old farts radically reduced our dining out. We watched Gordon Ramsay trying to make bad restaurants good.
Typical sequence:
Gordon inspects the kitchen, and opens a greasy cupboard door. Everyone steps back a pace.
Gordon: "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!?"
Head chef: "Oh. So THAT'S where all of the maggots were coming from!"
Correlation? Causation? Eat mor veggyz.

@nprofile…p25k Perhaps fastSM has a switch to put it into a mode where it doesn't autorefresh. In mastodon, it's "Slow mode," so the name of the switch might not match exactly.

@nprofile…6jyx I've used Digital Ocean before. I hope it's not them. They have turnkey mastodon servers.
Another option I've seen people like is OVHcloud.
My server (serving PeerTube, Faircamp and jitsi-meet, a chat server) is currently in my living room on a 2GB line. I've been meaning to move it to a data center, and have looked at OVHcloud's pricing (mostly for dedicated hardware). Very reasonable.
I have no recent experience with either.

I have ceased being the building and maintenance liaison for the HOA. I can't deal with the stress anymore. I just used all-caps in an email to an owner. Nazis are too much, and I can't handle the additional stress of water in basements and corralling contractors. I've done it for years. I'm also wearing the Chairman hat because NOBODY ELSE WILL.
We are operating 1 member short on the board, and so 2 jobs are mine. This time, the HOA treasurer is demanding W9's before she will cut checks to contractors. One contractor didn't get the message. They also claimed they sent it to me, which was a lie. That company's bid, which the board accepted, now looks bad b/c a neighbor's French drain and line to the street were blocked and nonfunctional during the week of atmospheric river. The company wants to charge a ton for foundation work. I think the gummed up French drain next door is the culprit.
So I asked if she'd like another contractor, and she said the lawsuit word, because the bid was accepted.
It has been a month, and we have received no contract.
This is all bullshit. So, I've had it. I've done this for what, 6 years now? Enough. Someone else gets to meet all of the nice contractors and deal with the owners. I can't handle the static. The rest of the HOA can wake up and take the job, or things can rot, for all I care at this point.
Nazis shooting people in the face and back, sent into our streets by our government has me a bit too stressed out to work, let alone deal with everyone's fucking maintenance problems.
Find a new mule. This one's tired.
