Garden update...I'm trying to avoid the classic error of having all flowering plants peter out by mid to late summer. What are pollinators supposed to eat then?
🌻 For the first time, goldenrod is everywhere, tall plants now at over 6 feet/2 meters. There are four separate patches, all of which experience sunlight at different times of the day. The resulting early and late flowering extends pollinator foodstuffs through October. Pic 1 is trying to show fading flowers in front with robust flowers in the background, but I'm not that good.
🪲In my area, goldenrod is food for many species, especially the oft-forgotten moths. But Goldenrod is also essentially its own habitat, housing leaf beetles, leaf-mining flies, gall midges and gall flies, plant bugs and stinkbugs. All of these can be food for birds, to help reduce their own declining populations.
📈 This amount of goldenrod is far more than last year. Today I saw bumble bees, carpenter bees and northern paper wasps without even looking hard. The bees will be active as long as I have flowers for them, possibly through November.
🛌 What were my sophisticated efforts to establish these goldenrod patches? I merely stopped removing the young plants. They reseed themselves. (If my neighbors ask, tell them it took a lot of work.)

📰 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐚 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬
🌎 Indonesia: A venomous primate feared extinct since the 1930s has been found on Bangka Island. Study reports the species persists across multiple forest pockets despite decades of habitat loss.
🌱 Pressures on the population are intense. Tin mining and oil‑palm expansion have fragmented habitat. Long scientific neglect has obscured the species’ true status.
🧪 Yes, it is uniquely venomous! Slow lorises mix saliva with secretions from a gland on their upper arm. When they lick this patch, the blend becomes an activated venom delivered through a bite using specialized teeth.
And they have two tongues.
🦥 The rediscovery shows that even heavily impacted landscapes can still shelter rare wildlife when local groups actively monitor, rescue, and return animals to the wild.

🌎 Earth: A new cross‑continental study highlights how Indigenous stewardship practices, from sacred‑site protection to sustainable harvesting and cultural fire‑watching, actively strengthen biodiversity, carbon storage, and ecosystem resilience.
🔥 These practices work because they maintain ecological balance through protocols refined over generations. Healthy Indigenous‑managed lands store vast amounts of carbon, reducing climate‑related economic losses while protecting forests, wildlife, and waters.

🌏 Pacific & Indian Ocean: New research shows that restoring native vegetation, seabird populations, and coral ecosystems helps atoll islands actually keep pace with rising seas.
🪶 Seabirds act as ecosystem engineers. Their nutrient‑rich guano fuels coral growth and strengthens native plants, while reef organisms build new land material that stabilizes shorelines.
🤝 Local communities across Seychelles, Chagos, and Tetiaroa collaborated with researchers, grounding the work in Indigenous ecological knowledge and long‑standing cultural ties to the islands.
📈 Restored ecosystems reduce flood and fire hazards and boost natural carbon storage, lowering climate‑related costs for small island communities.
🌺 Protecting atolls also preserves cultural heritage, community identity, and the deep relationship between island peoples and their ecosystems.

🐢🐢 TURTLE TUESDAY 🐢🐢
🌏 Tiny Raine Island is the largest nesting site for 90% of endangered Green Sea Turtles. Unfortunately, rising sea levels are creating slopes that cause hatchlings to flip over and die. Climate change's heat is causing too many females to be born.
💪 But an intrepid group of egg relocation specialists, armed with high tech and knowledge from Indigenous groups nearby, is saving the day. They have relocated eggs at scale to a safer island.
🌊 This year, more than 9,100 northern Great Barrier Reef green sea turtle hatchlings have begun their journey to the sea. An amazing 82% of the relocated eggs hatched and made it to the water.

📰 New California Condors Nest
The YUROK TRIBE in the Pacific Northwest has reintroduced a pair of California Condors, who have established a nest.
🔭 Biologists with the Northern California Condor Restoration Program (NCCRP) determined that the female condor, known by her Yurok name Ney-gem’ Ne-chween-kah (“She carries our prayers”), likely laid an egg inside a hollow in an old-growth redwood tree.
🧑‍💼 This rare event did not come easy. The tribe spent nearly two decades conducting studies, evaluating contaminant risks, and building partnerships before releasing the first cohort of four condors in May 2022.

Sorry that I have been away. Gardening season is busy for me. In a few hours, I'll be headed to Raleigh, NC for the Arts in Bloom Festival at the NC Art Museum.
Will report on all of this as soon as I return. Until then enjoy my blooming Carolina Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens), a native vine that has stayed green even through the very cold days we had. Flowers popped out as one of the first flowers for my #NativeBees and other pollinators.

Be Aware When Spring "Cleaning"
🐞 Check your timing when you begin clearing garden areas in the spring. Beneficial insects may still be overwintering in growth and stems.
🍂 Pic 1: This area of dead, overgrown iris leaves is a good example of a spot to overwinter, if you are a bug, so it was left until they had time to get active. (See link)
🌻 Pic 2: Waiting was not a problem, though. Time was used to create a design to maximize insect population support. Labels on the cleared area show that the design puts shorter natives at the 'top' of the bed and taller natives near the 'bottom'. Species prefer different heights.
🦋 This design also addresses the common view of this bed from beyond the 'top'. Now the many butterflies which will appear soon can easily be seen.
Go Native!

SUCCESSFUL GLASS RECYCLER ALSO BUILDS WETLANDS
🍾 Franziska Trautmann started a recycling facility in a backyard 5 years ago. Now she's Louisiana's biggest glass recycler.

After WW2, beavers in conflict with human neighbors had to be moved from suburbs to an Idaho mountains river basin.
✈️ No usual method of transportation worked in the dense slopes, so they attached spring-loaded boxes to parachutes, put in 76 beavers, and chunked them out of a plane.
It worked. There is video.

🪰 This very small fly landed on my finger last summer. Look at the bands on its tiny, tiny wings.
📷 Pic is a little blurry (had to use one hand quickly to get the shot), but it looks like a "biting midge" (Culicoides spp.). They need a better publicist, evidently.
🍂 It's one of a population in the thick layer of decaying leaves being used as a natural mulch nearby. Bugs like these are what Brown Thrashers and other birds are after when they are looking through leaves for food. We can support declining bird populations by just keeping leaves on the ground or as mulch in beds.

SUCCESSFUL URBAN INTERVENTION FOR BIODIVERSITY IMPROVEMENT
🏙️ Over the past two years, Dunedin's city center has become greener and more biodiverse thanks to the installation of street-side planters.
🐞 This change, though modest, proves popular with a range of insects that have moved in even though the city center remains dominated by gray non-permeable surfaces.
🌇 This real-world example shows that urban dwellers with limited green spaces can still have a positive impact on urban biodiversity through the use of planters and raised garden beds.
🪴 The upgrade of Dunedin's George Street comprises three consecutively installed blocks, each with a slightly different theme. The first block is dominated by native plants, the second features more flowering species, and the third has a mixture of both.

Works for Squash Bugs
🐸 This Green Tree Frog is watching over my Zucchini plant (metric name = Courgette).
🐞 It should be able to pick off pests like Squash Bugs so I don't have to. It should also take out some predatory insects that attack pollinators.
Like I captured previously: https://mindly.social/@joewynne/114684632795378322
🐸 I hand dug a pond so that frogs would proliferate in my yard and they have. Some nights males of 3 or 4 species are calling for mates simultaneously. Kinda sexy.
🕸️ Frogs are important players in a biodiverse habitat. They are prey and predators. They keep down populations of insects and pesky mollusks. They advantageously take out mosquitoes at the pond. They also keep the pond healthy.
I could go on, but you get it.

Oh, same.
I love volcanoes. We had a family vacay planned to Hawaii in 2019 and then Kilauea started erupting! Already had a bus trip planned to Volcanoes National Park and was envisioning feeling the heat!
But it turned out the Park Service was tasked with keeping people safe, for some stupid reason, so we were kept pretty far away.
I did eat lunch with my daughter on the rim of another volcano, not erupting but we could see the red boiling lava, so that was a positive.
So I would definitely support retiring close to one.

🐛 Unbee-knownst, a caterpillar munches below. Probably a Geometer Moth caterpillar but haven't been able to get confirmation yet.
Good example of two ways insects interact with plants ecologically. Some eat them, other pollinate them.
Insects evolved in association with certain plants and have adapted to their defenses. Non-native plants can overrun natives and be inedible to the eaters.

Just in time for #NationalPollinatorWeek, the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation has released an important report related to butterfly conservation.
🦋 Notable Points
🔸Butterflies populations are declining rapidly.
🔸The major causes are pesticide use, habitat loss, and climate change.
🔸We can counter the decline by making sure that 🌱 host plants for caterpillars and 🌸 nectar plants for adults are available throughout the entire growing season.
🔸We should also stop using pesticides in locations butterflies live - including our gardens.
🔸Both of these will improve their resilience to climate change.
It's not complicated. We can do our part to help!

🦋 New species in my garden! 🥳 A Painted Lady on a Black-eyed Susan.
🐛 The caterpillars feed on thistles and I have a few.
🐛 They also feed on mallows. I need to get some mallows, actually, especially the U.S. temperate version of the popular Hibiscus.
The platter-shaped flowers of the Swamp Rose-Mallow would look great. Even better, they provide food for #NativeBees and caterpillars of two other butterflies: the Gray Hairstreak and Common Checkered-skipper.
That would be serious habitat building! 💪

🦋 I have noticed that small pollinators sometimes get scared off of some of my flowers by the rough activities of the larger ones.

🦋 I was out in the garden a few days ago and spotted this caterpillar on the characteristic leaf of a Maypop (the Passionflower in southern U.S.). Very complex coloration. When all grown up, it's a Variegated Fritillary butterfly.
❓So now, the habitat gardening questions come to mind: Are there other components that are needed for this butterfly's lifecycle to be supported?
✅ There is plenty of Passionflower vine in the garden, because I have let it grow. The caterpillars also eat Plantain, American Field Pansy and Common Blue Violets, all represented in my garden.
But what about the butterfly phase of the life cycle?
✅ The butterflies feed on Thistles, Coneflowers, Fleabane, Red Clover and Asters, all happen to be in my native plants garden.
Looks like the Variegated Fritillary can already establish a population here. 🕺 (happy dance)

🐝 Sharp-tailed Bees don't have pollen collecting hairs. Don't need them because they lay their eggs in other bee's nests. (This is called being "cleptoparasitic".)
🐝 There have to be enough of their specific prey bees to keep their population going. But insect populations have been dropping for decades, so Sharp-tailed Bees can be very hard to find.
Needless to say, I was thrilled to see one in my garden on a cloudy day.

On my afternoon walk, I thought I saw one of the plastic predator bird statues on a suburban fence. Wrong. It was an actual hawk, probably waiting for a rabbit to appear.
I'm guessing from size and color it is a red-shouldered hawk. Also, there is a deciduous forest and river nearby - their favorite haunt.
