I've done a lot of research, including pulling engines apart to see what's going on inside them, and I've settled on a routine of running Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and changing it every 10,000 miles. My dad started using Mobil 1 back in the 1980's and we've always had fantastic luck with very long-lived engines. He's got two vehicles that are at 280,000 and 320,000 miles on the original engine, and I'm just shy of 250,000 in my daily driver. We've also got some pretty rare cars, like a C4 Corvette ZR1 (they only made a few thousand of them and the LT5 engine is unique to that model) that we don't fuck around with anything just to save a buck. But there's not much reason to change the Mobil 1 EP at less than 10,000 mile intervals when the lab reports come back and show it's still got life in it.
I think it's very important to run a decent oil filter, though, and not some shitty one that clogs easily and goes into bypass after a couple thousand miles.

The original Z28 was an RPO for a Trans Am racer, and the league originally had a maximum engine size of 5L or 305 ci. Chevrolet's entry used a 327 smallblock destroked with a 283 crank, to 302 cubic inches. They shipped with a dual-carburetor cross ram intake manifold in the trunk, which was meant to be buyer-installed.
Destroked engines give up low end torque, but can scream like banshees at high RPM. Those first Z28s would have had terrible street manners and definitely would have gotten people into a lot of trouble, because the car was only happy when it was doing illegal things.

Doing some baseline experiments with my Coleman power cooler. In ambient temperature of about 72°, it pretty quickly pulled down to a temp of 41°, which really isn't cold enough. But with the addition of a few cold packs, internal cooler temp plummeted to 25°. Now I've removed the cold packs and I'm going to see how well it holds the cold temp with no thermal mass to help.
I'm doing all of this because I found another one of these in a thrift store for $12, and I completely disassembled it. I'm going to try to replace the insulating foam with something that has a higher R value, and also increase the size of the heatsinks and fans, and perhaps even expand the peltier effect devices. The goal is a cooler that can maintain safe cold temperatures (sub-40°) in the car, in the middle of Alabama summer, with the air conditioning off. Will it work? Dunno. It's a big ask.

My granddad owned a barbecue restaurant. He didn't want to, but circumstances conspired to put him in charge of learning everything about making and selling barbecue on a commercial level in the 1950's. His brothers convinced him to be the primary investor in the venture and then proved that they couldn't make it work well enough for him to get his money back, so he took it over.
He and his brother built two roughly identical pits. One in the back of the restaurant, and one in the brother's back yard. The idea was that if demand outstripped the restaurant pit, the brother would fire up the back yard pit to double their capacity.
The restaurant was torn down in the early 1980's, after my granddad died. The other pit is in the back yard of an abandoned house now. I tracked it down and took pictures of it.
The company that owns the property doesn't return my messages. I've considered just stealing it.

I've come across CPAP machines in thrift stores and estate sales before. They have extremely rugged stepper motors in them to run the fan at varied levels and are very, very quiet because the whole thing is silenced with closed cell foam. They're rated for thousands of hours of use, but are often barely used because people hate them.
I've wondered about creating a forced air cooling system with one of them. I guess you'd need to build a stepper motor controller with access to the computer's temperature sensor information, so it could raise and lower the output of the fan based on temps. Or just set it up to run full blast all the time.

Oh that sucks. What did y'all end up doing? If it was a blown line, you'd need a double flaring tool, fittings, and preferably a pressure bleeder to get it going again, if you couldn't just buy a replacement line. Those aren't things I normally carry with me. I've done some straight up Macgyver stuff to get home before, though.
I had a caliper seize on my XJ Cherokee 150 miles from home on the day I bought it, so I bought one from an Advance Auto Parts and filled it with brake fluid and then swapped it really fast to keep air bubbles to a minimum. I figured I'd just bleed it when I got home if it worked well enough to get me there. Then I never bled it because it worked fine. I did all that in the parking lot of some planetarium in Atlanta.
I wish I still had that thing. Everything about it was designed for field repair. Even the stuff that Jeep people whine about being hard to fix is easy.

These are my personal rules about gas, particularly when traveling:
Stick to Tier 1/Top Tier stations and never use Shell gas (they have repeatedly fucked people over with bad gas).
If it seems like the gas has something wrong with it, mix it with Chevron/Texaco. They seem to have the best additive package. I also will dump in a can of seafoam.
Don't buy gas while the tanker is filling the tanks or immediately after because it will kick up sediment.
Watch for niggers.

I went and had the chicken salad that is supposed to be the best in Alabama. Is it the best? I don't know, but it was very good and definitely a contender. There's a couple of other restaurants which claim to have some of the best chicken salad in the state that I'll have to try before I can hang a laurel wreath on anyone.
I picked at it to reverse engineer it, and this is what I found:
*It had a mix of shredded white and dark meat chicken, so lots of flavor without being too fatty. There were no knuckles or cartilage accidentally left in to spoil the texture.
*Mayo.
*Finely chopped boiled egg. In fact it was so finely chopped and incorporated into the mayo that it was difficult to see, but I could taste it. There were no obvious chunks of egg white or yolk.
*Chopped roasted almonds. Maybe three almonds' worth.
*Sliced grapes. Maybe two grapes' worth in the entire serving.
*No pepper and it didn't taste salty, but it had just enough salt in it.
*The ingredients were well balanced.
There was nothing unusual about it. It was just chicken salad expertly made.

Water glassing fresh eggs that still have the bloom on them works. The eggs end up with a consistency that's a little different from fresh eggs after 6 months or so, but they're not spoiled.
I did water glassing in a 5 gallon bucket after I first got chickens and was getting completely overwhelmed with eggs. I eventually just started chucking eggs directly into the composter because there were so many and I couldn't even give them away fast enough. I think they're better than beignets, but they've all but vanished from the French Quarter. The story I read about their history was that there was a law in Louisiana that slaves had to be given one day a week off to work for money so they could eventually buy their freedom, and they would often fry up Calas and sell them in the quarter to make money.

Interestingly, the reason that the electric chair was invented was because Thomas Edison was trying to convince everyone that AC power (which was invented by Tesla and being championed by Westinghouse) was inherently more dangerous than DC (his method), so he arranged a demonstration in which an elephant was quickly killed by AC electrocution. The government people in attendance immediately wanted to develop it as an execution method to replace the "barbaric" hanging. Edison tried to convince everyone to refer to being electrocuted as being "Westinghoused." It didn't take.

Alabama has gone to a slightly darker shade of silver/gray, but they still use a similar paint scheme to what they've had since at least the 1950's.
I'd like to have one of the old Highway Patrol Javelins, though.

@nprofile…46kf Do you have one of these in your collection? I came across it in a little rural thrift store today for $1. Revere Ware graduated measuring cup.

My brother lived there for a while and worked all over the state, but I never visited him. Now every time I say "I want to see 'X' in Oklahoma," he replies, "No, you don't. You don't want to go to that part of Oklahoma."
IDK, I kinda want to see it for myself and make my own judgements, but nobody ever says ANYTHING nice about Oklahoma.

Last year I built a worm bin and filled it with huge gigantic worms from the leaf litter on my parents' back driveway. They were rocking along pretty well but then the dogs knocked it over and they all escaped.
So, turns out they went right into the garden and got to work. The garden is insanely full of worms this year. I've never seen anything like it.

There's a local Alabama chain called Milo's. Their burger is a thin patty, pickle, diced white onion, and a tangy brown secret recipe sauce on a soft griddled bun. They advertise them pretty much they way they look--a little mashed down in the paper, with sauce dripping out the sides. They're delicious.
They do crinkle-cut fries seasoned with Flavacol, and it took them like 50 years to figure out that people wanted the secret sauce to dip the fries in. Now they just include a little tub of it by default instead of making you beg at the counter.
They are also known for their sweet tea, which was spun off into its own company and is sold in grocery stores. I find it to be way too sweet for my liking.
Milo was a real guy; he learned his craft as a cook in the US Army during WWII and started his empire in a tiny shack of a restaurant near downtown Birmingham.

Yes, I remember now, I donated to the thing he set up. Whew!
I had my own run-ins with law enforcement about 15 years ago. My parents paid my bail before I was even booked into the jail. I had a cop spit on me and tell me that he was going to lose me in the jail and I'd be there for months before anyone found me, because I told him I didn't want to answer his questions without a lawyer present.
Then this gigantic cop (who I call Officer Steroid) came and got me out of the holding cell, along with a couple of black guys, and it really looked like he was planning to take the three of us into an empty cell and beat the shit out of us. The first black guy he took in the cell (who was old and about half of Officer Steroid's size) whipped his ASS. He was crying and screaming for help. They ended up pepper spraying the negro and using a taser to drive stun him before he finally quit. Took two cops to pull him off of Officer Steroid, who ran away and I never saw him again. Another cop grabbed me and the other guy and shoved us back into one of the other holding cells.

Okay, good. I read someone say that people were grifting off of things like that and then pocketing the money. I was pretty enraged at the time and could not remember if I actually fully vetted what I was donating to.

Right after you were arrested, I donated money somewhere that was supposed to go directly to Madison. Did that actually happen?
I don't remember if it was GSG or not.

I've seen a few attempts at character assassination of Shiloh Hendrix. "She dated a nigger in 2011" or "She's a trashy single mom."
It DOES NOT MATTER whether or not any of these things are true. They do not need to be defended.
In the moment, she encountered niggers, and she called them niggers, and stood up for herself. The act of standing up for herself in this case is what put her in danger, and the GSG is specifically listed as a method of getting her out of that danger.
The niggers gave all that money to Karmelo Anthony, because they saw themselves in Karmelo Anthony, and they also wished to be able to commit horrible crimes, like murder, against White people and get away with it.
We see ourselves in Shiloh Hendrix. We want to call a nigger a nigger. And we want to be away from them. She's won the White Pride lottery, and I am happy for her and all of us collectively that it even exists.
