I had a WTF moment when I looked at my medication Peltier cooler a few minutes ago, and it said "35.6". It's switched to heating? Ruined my meds?
No, I just had to put on my reading glasses to see the ridiculously tiny "°F" indicator. It had somehow gotten switched.
I am a bit disappointed in it in general. Most of the time it holds 2.0⁰C (according to its display) at ambient of 15 to 30⁰C, but occasionally for no obvious reason it goes up to around 8⁰C, then cools back down.

My average received dinner invitations per day is perhaps around 0.25. Scheduling conflicts aren't that common.

Around 2010, I tried to write a compiler for an obscure programming language, in C++, using flex and bison for lexical and syntactical anslysis, and LLVM, via its C++ API, for code generation. I was able to get LLVM to JIT code into memory, but I wasn't able to get it to work for non-JIT creation of an object file. I spent a lot of time on it, and eventually got too frustrated and abandoned my project.

A few years ago I contacted Apple support about an issue with a possible compromise of my AppleID. They resolved it by saying I had violated their terms and conditions, and permanently banned both my AppleID and my email address.
I have some old Apple devices that are permanently bricked now, because every time they asked me to verify my AppleID, I cancelled. Do that too many times, and they brick the device.

I'm trying to decide on a CMS for a new web site. It might have a blog-like section, but won't be primarily a blog, so I don't think I want to use Wordpress. On the other hand, frameworks like Flask seem too low-level. I want some reasonable publishing right out of the box.
I very much prefer Python over PHP or JavaScript.

I've somewhat been wanting to replace my Ubiquiti Edgerouter 4, which is the router between my 1G fiber and my internal network. It still works fine, and does full line-rate routing, including PPPoE encapsulation and VLAN tagging. The problem is that Ubiquity stopped supporting it about three years ago. I've considered using a spare 1U Xeon server, which I believe can meet the required performance in software, but it consumes around 200W.

The Intel NUC I use for my away-from-home-theater has failed. After power-up, it spends a lot of time with the NUC logo on screen, then shows a message that POST failed, and to press Y to enter setup. However, it doesn't seem to recognize a keyboard.
I'm taking a break for dinner, but when I get home, I'll try removing the M.SSD, and reseating and/or rearranging DIMMs.
I think it's a NUC8i5 or 8i7.
I'm still irritated that Intel sold off the NUC line. Asus only continued the gamer NUCs

My first exposure to the concept was that for their ultimately unsuccessful Intel iAPX 432 (their first 32-bit processor, in 1981, unrelated to x86), the iMAX-432 operating system was supposed to provide "object filing". They published CS papers on their design, but the feature never shipped.

The FORTRAN 66 syntax rules for arithmetic expressions are given in ASA X3.9-1966 §6.1.
These do not allow chained exponentiation without parenthesis, like:
A**B**C
but with parenthesis, either of the following are valid:
A**(B**C)
(A**B)**C
IBM FORTRAN IV allows the expression without parenthesis, and interprets chained exponentiation right-to-left, whereas the other arithmetic operators associate left-to-right.
I think many other FORTRAN compilers followed IBM's lead.

I really like the doctor who's been my primary care physician for the last several years. Unfortunately, due to insurance coverage issues, I've been forced to change from her to a different doctor. I just had my first appointment with her by phone, and maybe it's a bit early to tell, but she seemed very willing to listen to me, and did a good job of addressing my concerns. When I was young, I expected that all doctors would be like that, but over the decades I've learned otherwise.

Are there any modern compiler design books that cover PEGs? I am able to use PEGTL (C++) and PyParsing (Python) just fine in practice, and I understand the fundamentals of it (I think), but I'd like to see more in-depth theory and analysis, like the tons of coverage that exists for LR, LALR, etc.

TIL: Gmail blocks attachment of VHDL source files, if their extension is .vhd, which is (unfortunately) common on Windows. I normally use Linux, and use a .vhdl extension, which Gmail does not find objectionable.
Apparently Gmail does this because some other software uses .vhd as an extension for a virtual disk image, though I don't really understand the point of blocking those, and .zip files, etc.
Anyhow, my client's FPGA code, written by some previous developers, uses .vhd. Bleh.

I've got the single-cycle instruction fetch and decode unit for my Z-80 compatible core now mostly working. I'm using four eight-bit wide FPGA block RAMs with four address conditiknal incrementers as the tessellated instruction memory (or eventually, cache). Currently I'm testing it in isolation, with no execution unit, so it is just continuously prefetching and decoding Z80 instructions, one full instruction (1-4 bytes) per clock cycle, and shoveling the decode into a buffer for verification.

Having written firmware for switches at multiple vendors, I'm guessing that at config time they've only allocated one set of data structures for each QSFP+ that isn't doing breakout, and so adding a breakout makes them want to change the allocation. They should just always allocate four for QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP56, etc.
Switch firmware wants to do as little dynamic allocation as possible, ideally none, to prevent memory fragmentation problems later.

I'm working on a design for a high-efficiency instruction decoder for a new #Z80 core design. Apparently the world doesn't have enough open-source Z80 core designs yet.
I'm trying to make this core much more cycle-efficient than normal Z80 cores, or even eZ80 cores. A normal Z80 core takes 4 clock cycles for the simplest instructions. I'm trying to get those down to 1 clock. I'm using a synchronous memory bus, and a loosely coupled instruction prefetch and decode unit.

The GOP is in favor of states' rights only when they can't come up with a better way to keep the Federal government from doing something progressive. Then they figure that letting conservative states ban the progressive thing in part of the country is better than having it permitted everywhere.
That hasn't been much of a problem in the last few years, though, with GOP controlling everything at the federal level.

Same question, but various 32-bit RISC processors? MC88110? Am29000/Am29050 (pin compatible)? Intel 80960KA/KB/MC/XA? TI TMS34020?

Dear Lazyweb,
Does anyone have a copy of "Unix and the Am29000 microprocessor" by Daniel Mann, from IEEE Micro Volume 12, Issue 1, pp. 23-31, February 1992.
IEEE lists the wrong DOI for that article. Other articles in the same issue seem to have correct DOIs, but there wasn't an obvious pattern to extrapolate from.
I'm interested because I ported the Telebit NetBlazer router OS to the Am29000 family (specifically, Am29005) in 1993 or so, but never touched a 29K Unix.

Some people claim thar the 6502 is a RISC processor. It's not.
Hill I'll die on: The 6502 is about as unRISCy as a 4500 transistor 8-bit CPU can possibly be. It has over a dozen addressing modes, and is not orthogonal at all.
That says nothing about whether the 6502 is good or bad. In my opinion it was/is quite good for a lot of things, but not necessarily best for everything. It was, however, absolutely brilliant for the time it was introduced (late 1975).

Dear Lazyweb,
Does a Fujitsu MB95F013 datasheet exist?

A friend just got a pair of Baofeng UV-5R dual-band HT, and I knew they were inexpensive, but I had no idea HOW inexpensive. Amazing.

Apparently there are imitation/clone Baofeng radios as well. I'm not sure how to spot them.
A lot of people who don't have amateur radio licenses use these, which isn't so great.

I was going out for breakfast, but the restaurant sign said, "ALL DAY BREAKFAST," and I didn't have that much time.

Looking at the datasheet for a 64Mbit SDRAM.
It requires 4096 refresh cycles for every 64 millisiemens (mS). So that would be 4096 refresh cycles per 15.625 ohms. I have no idea how to work out the necessary timing.

I've written assembly for many systems, including relatively old machines like the DEC PDP-1 and PDP-10, and the IBM System/360. I know a little bit about the instruction set of the IBM 704/709/7090/7094, but have not actually written assembly for them.

The Man Who Stole Infinity, by Joseph Howlett
https://www.quantamagazine.org/the-man-who-stole-infinity-20260225/
Demian Goos finally tracked down Dedekind's copies of letters he sent to Cantor, showing that Cantor on at least two occasions published papers on orders of infinity, based in part on Dedekind's work, without crediting him. The letters had been preserved by Dedekind's heirs, and were made available to Goos by Karin Richter.
