In 1984, I got in trouble for running Emacs (probably Gosling) on the VAX 11/780 at the university. The system manager quickly appeared and said not to do that, and said I should use vi or jove. I despised vi, so I went with jove.
I'm not sure why they had Emacs on the system if they didn't want it used.
