I've used SQL, but I've never used a real object storage facility. I've always wanted to learn about them, especially any formal theory.
My first exposure to the concept was that for their ultimately unsuccessful Intel iAPX 432 (their first 32-bit processor, in 1981, unrelated to x86), the iMAX-432 operating system was supposed to provide "object filing". They published CS papers on their design, but the feature never shipped.
