Seed grown feijoa results. I have two trees grown from seed and they taste and look different. One is more oval/circular shaped and the other oblong.
The oval shaped tastes the best. It tastes like cattleya guava and muscadine grapes and is quite juicy and succulent. It’s better than my pink guava. I’ve named it “chubby baby.”
The oblong one tastes like green apple and the peel is kinda resin-y.

It was a bad year for yuzus. My tree isn’t very big and squirrels stole two fruit off of it last spring when they were still small and green. The result is that the one yuzu that ripened is a total honker.
The other yuzu is from a friend’s tree. His trees are alternate bearing bc he doesn’t thin the fruit in boom years. Yuzu tea from dried yuzu peel is a biological imperative so I will be bereft this year.

Mexican startup, Greenfluidics produces a solar panel made with certain strains of algae, water and photovoltaic cells. The panels generate energy AND capture CO2. For every 1kg of algae, 2k of carbon will be captured. The biomass created are periodically filtered and can be used as fertilizer. As for energy, it produces comparable rates to current solar panels some of which is used to keep the installation going.

I grew this pomegranate from seed!!
Its parent was “California White.” Pomegranates don’t come true from seed but seeds don’t produce vastly inferior fruit like the way apples do.
Obviously this is no where close to being a white pomegranate so I get naming rights. What should I call it? Was thinking

Devil’s claw update (Proboscidea louisianica)
Plants are recovering after bunnies rampaged the raised bed and I finally got some young pods after saving seeds for next year.
Recipe: Turtle Isand by Sean Sherman p.169.
They have a bitter flavor similar (but less in your face) to white bitter melon. Also tasted like peanut+toasted coconut / toasted white poppy seeds. The salt definitely moderates the bitterness.

Common evening primrose, Oenothera biennis
A favorite fall food for birds. They love the seeds and perch on the stems to pry open the pods. This plant blooms summer to first frost. It is also edible for humans: leaves, flowers, seeds and roots (in early spring).
Leaves can be dried for winter storage and have a tea-ish flavor. The roots stay well in the fridge and a sweet with carrot-parsnip flavor.

@nprofile…77kd from what I understand it’s about the plants themselves not losing water due to evaporation loss.
Plants release a lot of humidity when they respire which is why they all do it at night when it is cooler and the sun isn’t shining on their leaves.
At midday in full sun, the surface leaf temp in 90F ambient temp can reach 140F - when plant leaf evaporation is its most intense. Cactus plants’ leaves evolved into tight coils (thorns) to avoid this kind of loss.

Bees still need food in the fall. Wild asters bloom prolifically and support pollinators when most flowering plants are going to seed.

“Cuba has installed 1.42 GW of solar capacity across 144 photovoltaic plants and expects to exceed 1.5 GW by the end of 2026. Renewables now account for 21.4% of electricity generation, while the country is also expanding energy storage and solar-powered water pumping.”

Leaf harvest: sweet potato leaves, papalo and muscadines. This is the last harvest for muscadines before they start to turn yellow. This is the first round for SP and the papalo got pulled bc the plants broke off from the base in the Nor’easter.
My oven will only accommodate a few trays at a time so I can only collect enough in a day that will fit. It takes around 12h to dry SP leaves at 140F.

Nor’easter post mortem: I really wish I had collected mulberry leaves before the storm. Tress are fine but leaves got wrecked. All the okra, sunchoke and hibiscus are leaning over but they appear to be still alive. Papalo got really trashed and a few of the plants broke off at the base.

Muscadine grape leaves are softer, less fiberous and cook down faster than European/Mediterranean grape leaves. They also don’t get downy mildew so there is more to harvest. They combine well with citrus, vinegar, artichokes, mint, thyme, rice, cumin, savory mushrooms, cucurbits, eggplant +/or tomatoes.

@nprofile…kva0 mine are around 6 years old. They’re very long lived peppers, just cut them down to a foot and bring them indoors in winter and water when the soil is dry. They bloom in early spring the next year and will have ripe peppers by summer solstice.
They’re one of my favorite peppers because of the fruity floral taste. Some are heatless but some will have very mild warm heat, like around 1000 SHU (less than low heat jalapeño). 1/2

@nprofile…jtxu no, these are mostly species baccatum peppers. Very fruity. A few are low-heat/heatless and the rest are moderate. There are some chiltepins and aji charapita but they seem to have gotten buried underneath. A few Mexican peppers in the left (Pasilla mixe, chile de agua, chimayo) The long thin ones on the right are thunder mountain longhorns. The squiggly ones to the bottom left are aribibi gusano (angry caterpillar).

@nprofile…jtxu I wasn’t able to positively identify them through iNaturalist. The only mushrooms I’m confident to forage are earth balls, morels and chanterelles.
The woodchips came from getchipdrop.org - free woodchips from arborists. It’s good for compost and raised beds and killing grass if you pile high enough.

Behold!
It may not look like much but it’s evidence I was finally able to lock out the bunnies from the raised bed! They can’t resist red veined chicory and chew it down to the base whenever they’re on it.
This comes after weeks of chasing them around and reinforcing/patching fencing wherever they escape.
Hopefully now my plants can recover to collect seed and I can plant for fall. (Too hot this week)

Warming oceans fuel the spread of Sargassum, a floating seaweed that grows rapidly. It’s escaped its native habitat and is growing huge swaths around the Atlantic and Caribbean. When it dumps on shore, it releases sulfiric fumes that smell terrible and the seaweed itself contains toxic heavy metals.
There are now numerous startups to explore it for carbon sequestration, bio-plastics/construction material, fertilizer, cosmetics…

2/2 Tomatoes in the back of the basket are coyote, a new variety from Mexico. They’re strangely sugary. Wild tomatoes next to them for size reference.
They’re labeled as pimpinellifolium but the fruit and leaves are larger than normal wild tomatoes so I think they’re hybrids. That and wild tomatoes are not sweet.
Wild tomatoes are more disease resistant than cultivated. These new ones are definitely fungal resistant as that’s a problem locally and the plant is disease free.

I patched all of the fencing to be ~4ft with chicken fencing scraps, netting and other material. And this week I watched the furballs climb up the chicken wire like a ladder. Who knew rabbits could do this???
I will have to replace the fencing with 4ft wire mesh if I want to use the raised garden bed and that’ll set me back probably $250 which I can’t spare. So very limited fall planting this year. 🙁

@nprofile…jhpj the one I use is calibrated to small animals and so was pretty cheap, $70. Besides that you need a grounding rod, insulators and polywire. The whole setup was around $150. I already had fence posts and metal cloth fencing (for small animals).
The higher powered solar fences for large animals are more expensive but you would only need fence posts, wire, insulators and grounding rod.
Do you also have small animal problems? Squirrels, rats, rabbits?

Baccatum seedlings produce enormous leaves in their juvenile stage. It’s normal for these to die off when the summer temperatures get hot. The mature leaves will be much smaller, especially if you are training them for low water. The two peppers above were already passed the juvenile stage and had mature leaves. But they still dramatically dropped most of their leaves as well as peppers in the extreme heat.
