*** EDPS-Civil Society Summit: safe by design, not by exclusion – reclaiming our digital future ***
Each year, the EDPS is organising an EDPS-Civil Society Summit during @nprofile…6ec4 #privacycamp26 .
@nprofile…k7ls Wojciech Wiewiorowski took part in the discussion with Luísa Franco Machado from EquiLabs in a roundtable facilitated by Simeon de Brouwer from EDRi.
The session focused on the @nprofile…fu0r proposal for the EU KIDS Act to explore the limits of measures based on exclusion or invasion of privacy, and to analyse the underlying structures and business models that expose all users to harm and vulnerability.
Wojciech Wiewiorowski stressed that protecting children online must be a priority, but that the way we do it matters.
Children are not only people to be protected, they are also holders of rights, including the right to express themselves, to access information, to have their privacy and personal data respected. But mostly, kids need to prepared for what comes next.
Any interference with their rights must be necessary and proportionate under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
“Protection should not mean exclusion. Protection is about managing risks, not banning participation.” stressed the Supervisor.

*** #ECSM 2026 kicks off ***
This year’s European Cybersecurity Month launched today at @nprofile…lasa
Massimo Attoresi, Deputy Head of Unit, Technology and Privacy at #EDPS delivers a keynote speech on the human factor in cybersecurity, 2026's focus.
📊 The numbers tell a story: of 115 personal data breaches notified to the EDPS so far in 2026, half are the result of cyberattacks. The first time they've been the leading cause. Many of these breaches begin with the person sitting at the keyboard. #AI is being used to augment attacks, making phishing and social engineering harder to spot and putting personal data at greater risk.
While technical defences matter, resilience is built by people who are trained in cybersecurity and empowered to act. 🛡️Our position is that strong cyber defence begins with obligatory training for management as well as for all staff on the digital front lines.
"The most resilient organisation in Europe will be the one where every employee, from the newest intern to the most senior official, feels equipped, trusted and genuinely responsible for the security of the organisation and the protection of the fundamental rights of any individual" added Massimo💡.
European Cybersecurity Month is the European Union’s annual campaign dedicated to promoting #cybersecurity among EU citizens and organisations. It brings together the various EU institutions, bodies and agencies 🇪🇺 to raise awareness of cybersecurity challenges ⚠️ and provide hands-on information 🛠️ and good practices ✅ for strengthening digital security 🔒.

Press release: #EDPS Opinion on the revision of #EUDPR
A new EDPS Opinion comments on the European Commission’s Proposal to amend the EU Data Protection Regulation (EUDPR), which governs how the EU’s own institutions, bodies, offices and agencies process personal data. ⚖️ The Proposal would streamline the rules on operational personal data processed by EU Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) agencies, including Europol, Eurojust and the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO).
The EDPS has long called for a consistent framework and welcomes the objective, but the Opinion sets out what is needed to make it work: clear powers to order compliance when infringements are identified, interim measures in urgent cases, and a review of the legacy agreements allowing Europol and Eurojust to share operational personal data with third countries.
@nprofile…k7ls , said: “A consistent and effective data protection framework for EU JHA agencies is something we have long called for, and we therefore welcome the objective of this Proposal. However, such an objective can only be achieved with effective supervision and enforcement. This Proposal represents an important opportunity to address existing challenges in this regard and to strengthen the application of the rules. This opportunity should not be missed.”
This Opinion is one of four on a wider EU Justice and Home Affairs legislative package.

🔎 What is hiding behind the world’s most famous landmarks?
Behind every iconic monument lies a timeless lesson. With our cybersecurity lens, we see what these architectures can teach us about protecting our personal data.
3 landmarks, 3 tips
🗼 Even engineering marvels such as the Eiffel Tower need constant upkeep, just like your software. Keep software and devices updated. Enabling automatic updates helps ensure you always have the latest protection in place.
🏯 The history of the Great Wall of China reveals the limits of high defences. Over time, even the strongest fortifications get breached. Clean out your inbox regularly. Organising old emails, clearing junk messages and unsubscribing from newsletters you no longer read helps reduce clutter and makes suspicious messages easier to spot.
⚱️Hidden chambers in pyramids were built to keep things private. So does private browsing. Use private browsing when you want fewer digital traces left behind. It can help to limit the traces left behind on your device by preventing browsing history, cookies and temporary data from being stored after your session ends.
A cleaner, updated digital space makes threats easier to detect and reduces opportunities for attackers.
✅Update software and devices.
✅Declutter your inbox.
✅Use private browsing.
Even iconic structures would fail without maintenance. What are your cybersecurity habits?

*** CPDP 2026 – Day 1 Recap ***
A packed first day at #CPDP2026! Here are the highlights from our five panels.
Bénédicte Raevens from the Supervision and Enforcement Unit explored the key role of DPOs and how the EDPS supports DPOs of the EU institutions, including through a long-established DPO network to share views and provide guidance.
Daniele Nardi from the EDPS Legal Service brought his perspective on the importance of being a lawyer first, before being a data protection lawyer, to navigate the increasingly varied EU regulatory landscape. As he put it, what remains appealing about data protection is that one ends up not just working on data protection.
Leonardo Cervera-Navas, EDPS @nprofile…2jtn General, moderated an insightful panel on AI Sandboxing, challenges and learning opportunities on AI and future human centric implementation.
Sebastião Barros Vale from our Policy and Consultation Unit discussed the interplay between the DMA and the GDPR in the context of operating systems, highlighting the important role that design choices play in protecting individuals' fundamental rights and how gatekeepers must balance data protection obligations with enabling end users' choices on data portability and third-party access.
Luis Velasco, Head of Technology and Privacy Unit, examined how algorithms, AI systems, agentic AI and brain-computer interfaces can influence consumers below the threshold of awareness in ways that are automated, personalised and scalable. A key question: is a new neuro-ethical legal framework needed?
The EDPS hosted a cocktail for participants to continue discussions and exchange views on data protection and AI after a full day of thought provoking panels. @nprofile…k7ls Wojciech Wiewiorowski delivered a speech to the audience encouraging engagement among different areas of expertise to enhance the protection of fundamental rights.
See you tomorrow for Day #2!

Today, on 9 May we commemorate the 76th anniversary of the ‘Schuman Declaration’, a historic milestone towards the project of 🕊️ freedom, 🤝 unity and ⚖️ shared democratic values that millions of Europeans enjoy today.
Though technology has radically changed since 1950, the values of unity and cooperation that inspired Robert Schuman then remain at the core of our mission: to safeguard privacy as an essential condition for human dignity.
Let’s trace the roots of Europe Day back. Through one of the first attempts to protect people’s personal data in a digitalising world.
We are proud and grateful to continue this legacy by championing data protection as a cornerstone of European values every day.
🎈 Happy Europe Day everyone!

This is the story your digital habits reveal – EU citizens in control of their data
Browsing, swiping or chatting on social media platforms is part of daily life for 89% of young people between 16 and 29 years old. But here is the shift. According to Eurostat in 2025, 76.9% of consulted EU citizens actively managed access to their personal data 🛠️ .
So what does that mean?
More awareness, more choices, more power over their own data.
In this series, we share how people across the EU are protecting themselves in an online world. One of the strongest actions someone can take is to refuse the use of personal data for advertising. 📋️ More than 58% surveyed people chose not to allow their personal data to be used for advertising.
Your right to object can be exercised at any time. You can object to the processing of your data, and you also have the right to object to a decision based on an automated process, such as profiling, if it might significantly affect you.
So what about you? How do you protect your personal data online?

🪪 Proving who we are, without giving away more than necessary? How? Perhaps a near future lies in one digital identity wallet where we have more control over our personal data.
This year, each 🇪🇺 EU Member State will offer at least one official European Digital Identity Wallet. Instead of juggling dozens of passwords or relying on ‘Log in with’ platforms, we could use a single secure wallet on our phone to store digital credentials - from our ID and driving license to university diplomas or gym card - and share only what is necessary with a high level of cybersecurity while ensuring privacy.
Welcome to the next episode of the TechDispatch Talks where we ask and answer the most crucial question on data protection and privacy 🗣️ .
On the menu:
🛡️ can wallets reduce password chaos and data oversharing?
🛡️ can it prevent profiling and tracking?
🛡️what happens if a phone is stolen?
🛡️how can we ensure privacy by design and by default?
The Digital Identity Wallet can empower citizens but only if strong data protection rules are built in from the start.

Today, @nprofile…k7ls Wojciech Wiewiórowski was invited to the IMCO–LIBE AI Act Working Group in the European Parliament to attend the meeting on the Governance and Enforcement structure of the AI Act and share some perspectives on AI Act enforcement observed by a data protection authority.
🗣️ Supervisor underlined the multifaceted role of the EDPS in enforcing #AIAct- as Market Surveillance Authority, Notified Body for selected high-risk systems and Data Protection Authority under #EUDPR.
The EDPS has taken consistent and deliberate steps to strengthen the governance through the establishment of a dedicated network of AI experts - the 'AI Act Correspondents Network'. In addition, the EDPS AI Sandbox pilot project was launched to support the EUIs in complying the AI Act's requirements and to test the capacity of establishing full-fledged regulatory sandboxes in the future.
As EU institutions, bodies and agencies operate across all 27 Member States 🇪🇺, close and structured cooperation between the EDPS, national competent authorities and the AI Office is indispensable.
"Stronger and more coherent collaboration among data protection authorities is equally essential, whether they are formally designated under the AI Act or act as fundamental rights authorities within its framework" Supervisor added.
🤝 The credibility and success of the AI Act will depend:
- on robust institutional coordination;
- the responsible and strategic use of limited public resources; and
- shared capacity to foster innovation while safeguarding the fundamental rights and values on which the Union is built.

*** Blogpost - ETIAS Fundamental Rights Guidance Board: ensuring access to an effective judicial remedy ***
As the clock ticks down to the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in autumn 2026, momentum is building to prepare ETIAS for entry into operation and ensure its compliance with data protection law and other fundamental rights under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
ETIAS is designed to pre-screen visa-exempt travellers before they arrive at EU borders, using highly sensitive forms of data processing such as automated cross-checking against EU and international migration and law enforcement databases; algorithmic profiling of applicants against pre-defined risk groups; and the creation of a watchlist of individuals deemed to pose security threats.
Through our role in the ETIAS Fundamental Rights Guidance Board (EFRGB), the EDPS follows the implementation of ETIAS at close quarters and provides guidance that links the right to protection of personal data with other key fundamental rights affected by this new system. The EFRGB’s recent guidance on ensuring the right to an effective judicial remedy for applicants, in which the EDPS took an active role, illustrates this approach.
The EFRGB serves as a laboratory for integrating data protection with other rights under the EU Charter and fostering collaboration between key fundamental rights bodies participating in the Guidance Board.
