@nprofile…nekg @nprofile…qltj The exposed filter look of a CR Box can be countered by: getting open weave fabric, burlap, or speaker cloth; adding velcro strips to each end; and wrapping it around the filter area to secure back on itself - kinda like wrapping a towel around your body. There are various ways of clipping or velcro-ing the edges to keep it in place.
Also, the previously mentioned CleanAirKits.com is a good source for more aesthetic options. Stick to Filtrete filters either way, though.

@nprofile…kt07 @nprofile…a4ar This has been tested, and the dwell time of any given particle within the confines of the box is so short that UV doesn't have really have enough time to make much difference, making it hard to justify the cost.
Plus, it still comes with the same side effect risks as always: skin exposure if not careful, potential negative interactions with airborne VOCs like cleaners, mild to moderate generation of ozone depending on the power and type of UV source, etc.

In light of current major wildfires, I'm reboosting my pinned thread on DIY air cleaners: how to build them, where to source parts, quiet PC fan-based alternatives, etc.

@nprofile…wn6p Regarding the new email subscription/newsletter feature: does that send the subscriber an email for every new post, or is it configurable as a daily digest?

Imagine a small server that's well connected to the rest of the Fediverse - seeing and storing thousands of posts per day while their users only make or interact with dozens to hundreds per day.
Now imagine all that chaff keeps building up day after day, month after month, year after year. That's the Mastodon software default.

Tootctl clearing is a method of purging old posts or media which originated on other servers and have never been interacted with by anyone on the server doing the clearing - the posts have never been Favorited, Boosted, Bookmarked, or replied to by users on that server.

In case you're a non-admin user and not familiar with what those features are:
Database storage holds all posts that a server has ever seen - everything posted there, everything that's ever passed through the Federated Feed, etc.
Media storage is all the photos, videos, and audio files that have been included in posts - they are stored separately and effectively linked to by their respective posts.

2026-02-25 01:31:51 UTC

Now would be an excellent time for @nprofile…zeh9 devs to prioritize the inclusion of tootctl-style status and media clearing options in the default Admin interface. These issues have been sitting open on GitHub for literal years at this point.
Across the network, we need better and more accessible means of managing database and media storage sizes to keep costs more affordable and to reduce server closures. This need is only becoming more and more pressing as infrastructure costs climb.

@nprofile…40t9 Just for giggles, I pulled up this post on one of my CRT TVs. While the subpixel-only version still shows banding in the sky, it looks notably smoother.
The image overall appears to have less perceptible aliasing and blocky artifacting compared to the version with ordered dithering added.
(While not perfect, this photo gets pretty darn close to what I was seeing - just with a fair amount of wide-angle lens distortion from getting up close to the screen.)

It's been a while, so here's a post to say that Kind.Social is entirely funded by Users Like You™.
It's the collective contributions from a wide swath of folks here which pay for the admin/moderation of the server, and I am so thankful that y'all continue to make this whole thing possible. Kind.Social is one of the longer running servers on the Fediverse, and it wouldn't still be here today without all your help.
Thank you.

The excellent and freely distributable COVID Zine has been updated for 2026.
https://newlevant.com/COVIDzine
This is among the most concise and well cited sources for the current state of #Covid knowledge and tools. Even for well-informed people who already take strong precautions, there is still likely something new to be learned by giving it a read through.

In case you're deciding whether or not to wear a respirator when you go out:
Consider that the recent #Covid variant NB.1.8.1 which is dominant in much of Asia, and rising globally as we move into the early stages of this summer's surge, features a symptom referred to as "razor blade throat."

While disability/accessibility aids are on my mind, it's good to know that power bed frames - with head and foot adjustments much like hospital beds - are readily available for around $300 USD. Mattress Firm, Amazon, and various big box retailers all carry twin and/or full size frames near that price.
It's certainly still a decent chunk of money, but they're so much less expensive than they used to be.
Memory foam, futon/cotton, and many innerspring mattresses are all fully compatible, too.

I finally assembled a racking setup that allowed me to get all the CRT TVs organized - except for the two in the house for active use.
All of them are rescues, and many still need more thorough testing or calibration, but they're all shelved and accessible now.
One day, I'm hoping to do an interesting combined display with it, like Matrix-style raining text or something kinda spooky for Halloween trick-or-treaters.

The following servers host nothing but bot accounts which are swarm-following - reports of 200+ follows at once from day-old accounts:
webmasto.online
mast-serv.site
gtmastodon.online
mastodon.gtmastodon.online
This is already worth defederating, but we should also anticipate a spam wave from them, too.
These posts discuss them further:

This Kakuma scam has been running for years and has utilized countless accounts across many platforms. Communities on Twitter, Discord, Mastodon, and Reddit have all dealt with waves of these scam accounts. Here are some example discussions from the past few years across three different subreddits:

While the Kakuma Refugee Camp does exist and has a history of violence and discrimination against queer folks, the scammers simply exploit this real-world tragedy and use the abundance of reporting on it to bolster their claims.
In addition to crowdfunding pages, they will frequently link to referendums or petitions to appear more legitimate. However, some links ended up being malicious.
Sometimes, they will reach out with an @ or PM that simply says hey/hi/hello. Just report them.

Once again, I'm warning about the LGBTQ Kakuma Refugee Camp mutual aid/crowdfunding scam.
It is a con which abuses the Fediverse culture of mutual aid and preys on our broad support for queer folks. Posts will often use photos manipulated to include pride flags/merch or new text on signs using "handwriting" fonts.
They link to a variety of GoFundMe pages with creators in Italy, Germany, England, France, Canada, USA, and more.
Many accounts use the names Justice Mayanja or Lukwago.

@npub1d7t…2f20 Just to make sure, was this a restriction on your end, or was the server not letting you upload photos?
