@nprofile…5uqu "江湖", but I can't translate it into English. The two characters are "rivers and lakes", but the meaning has nothing to do with water. It means a subculture of martial artists, street performers, and various ne'er do wells that probably never really existed. Most Chinese fantasy stories are based on it. It's always entertaining to see Chinese TV shows subtitled in English and see what they do with this word.

@nprofile…vkw7 Nice.
Random adjacent thoughts: I did a long series of blog entries (of general interest to no one), on computing generalized hypergeometric series. What turned out to be fundamental was the sum of xᵏ/(k!)ⁿ over k, so 1/(1+x), eˣ, and the Bessel function I₀ for n=2. If one wants to compute generalized hypergeometric functions using series, then the above series is whacked into two parts by where one stops summing, and knowing when to stop summing depends on estimating the sum of the tail, rather than the contribution of each term individually.

@nprofile…8qh7 Hard to say. I've lived in Claremont for 1.5 years, but I also lived here about 9 years ago. I didn't notice poor forecasting before about six months ago, but there's a gap in my data for Claremont.
NOAA has an API, so I was thinking for pulling LA and San Diego predictions and doing a running accuracy check vs the airport station data. I haven't gotten further on that project than pulling the JSON data from the API a few times as a test.

@nprofile…8qh7 Seeing as I am walking distance to an airport with a full NOAA weather station, micro-climate isn't a good excuse for my location. What's funny is that I am also walking distance to the border with another NOAA group (San Diego), and their forecasts are often very different.

@nprofile…8qh7 The previous hand-waving was that the lack of buoys out in the ocean leads to uncertainty in when weather fronts from the West arrive. If someone proves a theorem by assuming AC, then I would be more likely to believe the theorem valid than if they had not proven anything. However, the next obvious step is to prove the theorem with a less magical assumption. If that cannot be done, then the validity of the theorem becomes questionable.

@nprofile…4hp5 I am unable to answer the question you asked, as I have little to do with MO. Too snobby for me. However, I can bloviate ignorantly on why I think MO is not attractive to women:
The structure of MO (and SO) is to gamify mathematical problem solving as an incentive. Asking and answering questions builds "reputation" which can be compared to others, resulting in a game where the competitors jockey for higher rankings. I posit that this incentivization holds little attraction to most women. The dominant cultural paradigm is that men compete and women work together. In order to make a system like MO appeal to women, I would suggest that a solved problem congratulates everyone who helped, no matter how small the contribution, and no one gets brownie points to collect.

Since I have not yet been murdered by ICE this year, I thought I would post a summary of the first week of 2026:
~7400 - tarpit accesses, available to anyone! Generates 💩 for training purposes!
~7200 - Fediverse accesses; thanks, I guess?
182 - Tencent crawlers, coming in at #1! Go China!
145 - Huawei crawlers, coming in at #2! China really is leading the pack here.
85 - OVH crawlers, coming in at #3! Go France! Who says the EU is falling behind in copyright theft tech?
76 - Amazon crawlers, coming in at #4! As expected, a mediocre performance from the US.
28 - Alibaba crawlers coming in at #5! Back to China.
AI crawlers banned in robots.txt that came for 💩 anyway: OpenAI, Grammarly, Perplexity.
The actual number of either humans or browser mimics was ~100.

He answered yes: people did think radio was good and television was evil. But that didn't stop everyone from watching television anyway.
I think the evil aspect was that it crushed people's imaginations. Television had nothing like using your Secret Decoder Ring to solve the Captain Midnight mystery. Television just handed you everything and all you had to do was sit in a stupor.
Perhaps the analogy between radio/television and internet/LLM has some value.

Yanno, we have this whole obsession with sending off calculations to GPUs for speed. That's just vector processing from the 1970's. I don't want that. I want machinery where I can wrap up part of a problem and program it onto an FPGA *on the fly*. Say, I've got 200-bit floating point numbers (with 100-bits of exponent) to crunch. Or if I have an optimization problem with logic that has 27 states, I can program in the merit function 1000 times and they all run at once, independently.
Then I want to have hardware on my desk with a single processor and 16 Virtex-7 FPGAs. That would absolutely smoke. (Literally, considering the power it would draw.)
Why can't we have good things?

@nprofile…8eua Arrhenius assumes thermal equilibrium. 5.6 eV is about 220 nm, so UV light would accelerate decay substantially. Keep your diamonds inside and away from cosmic rays.

@nprofile…8eua When I was in high school (late 1970's), I would build 3D models of all these particles out of cardboard sheets, with each particle at a corner or intersection. Sadly, when I was in college, my hard physics professors were mostly jerks, and I ended up going into astrophysics instead.
At any rate, if you find a symmetry, then there must be an underlying conserved quantity.

What is randomness? That's a rather philosophical question. Randomness is some mysterious gremlin of chaos. A demonic entity that defies certainly in the future. What is it, mathematically? If you read this article, I hope to leave you without a satisfying answer.

@nprofile…00p2 So, her phone's bluetooth is on. My headphones are wired. However, my desktop does have bluetooth. I'll have to check if powering it off makes a difference. My desktop and the iPhone are definitely not paired, though.

My wife just purchased an iPhone 17. When she is in the house and I am listening to music with my desktop and headphones, I can hear her iPhone microphone in the right headphone channel. Even if she isn't using her iPhone for anything.
Creepy as hell.
