Almost anything can be abused to act as a database. The tool I'm currently abusing doesn't feel too terrible.

@nprofile…hrzl you likely don't need multiple emitters in this case. Probably a couple small mirrors positioned radially on the crank so the ir line-of-sight is maintained by mirrors when direct view is blocked.

2026-07-05 14:49:41 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…hrzl do you have a physical drawing? If physically possible, I would consider IrDA UART, but actually using IR transceivers. Mount one near the hub of the wheel and aim the other at it from an axial direction. A 45 degree mirror could be used to assure coverage if space is tight.

2026-07-05 14:43:54 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…7k5d @nprofile…hrzl Agreed... If you can get IrDA type pulses to get through the transformer that might be a workable option. It would be a bit of a science fair project to do though. What is on the receiving end? How much hardware can you add?

@nprofile…mv7s Oh, no, that's not what I meant. I just meant that they didn't catch the inability to pass 8b/10b in the 32b/64b mode because they only tested sunny-day use cases.
I bet they dropped in a 32b/64b phy next to the existing 20b/40b phy. (Code reuse! -> Ship fast! -> Profit!)
And they never tested 32b/64b from the ground up (e.g. the way you might, by starting with a 0/1 pattern on a scope, moving to 8b/10b, then moving to 32b/64b. They jumped straight to 32b/64b testing: pass==done

2026-06-30 12:33:59 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…mv7s it sounds like they built up a system without basic tests because they had a working system to bootstrap from. So they only tested the sunny day cases.
This is a problem that starts with second or third generation engineering...
And management and engineers who don't do long term support love it because it delivers "working" systems fast.
... but it ends with the tower of babel.

I presume that SHA-256 is too fast to compute these days, because of very fast hardware. So if the passwords are entered by a human they probably will match the dictionary based algorithms pretty quickly.
Same I was able to brute force a bad windows 8 laptop password a few years back with physical access to the machine. Passwords like "Yo1235!Mama" aren't going to stand up to much.

@nprofile…dymg the discussion around piping to bash is focused on one specific instance of a general problem. The real problem is one of establishing trust. And trust is not a problem that can be solved with a simple technical command.
Even of piping to bash goes away, the replacement will be no better.
For example vscode asks if you trust the author when you open a directory. That's the same as piping to bash. See recent exploits.
But nobody will discuss how we _should_ establish trust!

@nprofile…mv7s fair warning. Our typical use case is a five minute walk, so it won't present an immediate problem.
But that's why I'm starting to read. I already see you can handle sparse samples. We definitely have non uniform sampling. Every sample is time-stamped for us. And this will get more complicated as we start combining data from different capture devices.

The new measure tool in freecad is so much better than it used to be in the past. I fumbled a bit at first, but without reaching for documentation, I put it in distance mode, clicked two points at the ends of the model and it gave me both the delta-y and the point-to-point distances.
This won't fit the printer at the #library so now I'll try to learn how to turn it into two click-together pieces. Ideas welcome!

@nprofile…syqt Do you have an I2C IO expander part number that isn't stupid expensive compared to, say, a cheap lattice FPGA that could act the roll?
On my last board (an RF module) that needed a bunch of GPIO control, I streamed serial bits to a lattice part that broke them out to outputs. I couldn't stomach the cost of the IO expanders. I feel that in 2025 it should be BJT/FET, or FPGA or bust... no more of these "helpful" single purpose vendor parts!

Clearly you can't blame those three while loops. Are any interrupts enabled/firing?
Do you agree with my premise that something that is low duty cycle and periodic at 2.3kHz would usually be software related? (Hardware sources don't generally have enough memory to do this.)
It could be a power supply hiccup?

@nprofile…syqt Preaching to the choir here, no doubt... but... my mind goes:
Can you run an FFT on the 38us bursts to see if they have any energy at a particular frequency, possibly pointing to a source clock domain that you might recognize?
Anything running at 2.3kHz period at that low a duty cycle is most likely of software origin as nothing of hardware origin would have such a long gap.

And something about MMU, virtual memory, TLB, etc. vs not? :-)

I use it for exploratory data analysis on large captures of telemetry data. I can quickly zoom in and out and turn stuff on and off. My use case is actually mostly time vs value data and is not as good a fit as silicon images might be.

Or maybe "bounce" a bunch of those tracks (layers) and work on just a couple at a time and then merge in batches to a master file.

@nprofile…9nyw If this type of qr exploit were seen in the wild the url world be widely published and we would see deep analysis of it. It would be a big deal. So, no: this is FUD.
It's like saying we've been contacted by alien life and not giving evidence: extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence.
Everything else is true though: a url to a phishing site could lead to bad stuff. 0 days happen sometimes. Etc.

@nprofile…3lr2 the heater seems like a good approach. Do be careful when it thaws to make sure there is no leak in the wall due to the expansion of the pipes. Be ready to turn off the water quickly at the source! I had a fitting pop off due to freezing. It would have been much better if I had noticed and turned off the water before it thawed. Flooding is the worst effect of freezing!

@nprofile…3lr2 It's hard to judge the look and feel from photos like that, especially with different lighting.
However, the rough texture reminds me of weathered stone which is cool.
However you decide to declare them finished you can't go wrong. Very unique.

@nprofile…3lr2 They don't look like the same, but they are still very cool. I'd buy one for $20, and I haven't bought a ring in almost 20 years.
Remember, that if the original ring did not exist as a reference point, this ring would still be very cool. This has more of an aged celtic stone look to it, which is an aesthetic that some people love more than the cleaner look.
My wife and I just put in our first order yesterday for a puzzle, earrings and a pendant. Your work is great!

@nprofile…9nyw I see: sad, he's smart enough to have parlayed the safety-net of his family wealth into a large fortune, but that's a low bar. Wealth is evidence of neither genius nor moral integrity.
We used to use "Albert Einstein" in that phrase. I think rather than arguing about your (ineffectual?) use of 'dummy' we should be determining a more modern exemplar genius. They should probably be a well known living physicist: Sabine Hossenfelder?

@nprofile…9nyw I think 'dummy' is not a very effective choice of insult, unless you actually think he is unintelligent.
I won't defend a claim of 'genius.' But 'dummy' goes beyond saying he's 'not genius'. He managed to get a degree in physics and economics, which demonstrates 'not dummy.' So you'd need strong contravening evidence to support a 'dummy' claim.
Maybe better to just call him "f*ckface," which signals dislike for him that nobody can contest. But that is not a creative insult.

@nprofile…9nyw That's why I prefer your blog posts over youtube.
But how do we fix it?
I think the problem is one of discoverability. Answers are simple and known, but once your search engine directs you to a monetized video platform the non-answers are incentivized and the quick-answers are buried.
If the search engines returned to their nominal task of retrieving answers rather than their actual task of producing ad revenue, we could fix this.
Is there a solution that sidesteps this problem?

2024-12-10 20:50:52 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…9nyw Yes. I know.
Let me clarify: I'm saying that _other people_ do post 10 second long videos that just say the answer. But you won't find these people's videos.
The 'monetized' videos tend to have a simple answers that is usually found at about 21 minutes in out of 23 total. And often the answer doesn't even require video at all. It could have been a one line answer in text.

2024-12-10 19:05:46 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…9nyw I suspect the answers are generally also recorded in 10 second clips by people who don't care to monitize their knowledge. But YouTube won't surface those videos because it would shortcut the revenue model. How do we fix this?

@nprofile…3lr2 Yes, a "Same same but different" case, this.
Have you run into any "true" counterfeits? I work at #Shure and their products get faked so well that sometimes it's difficult even for Shure engineering staff to tell if they are the real deal or not. They sometimes get sent in for service. And Shure owns their own factories specifically to avoid "overproduction" concerns.

@nprofile…3lr2 If I search amazon for Infinity Puzzle right now I get three hits for "No Fixed Shape" puzzles, I don't see a TM or any nervous system branding, so it's not clear if they are yours or a knock off. If a knock-off, you could go after them for using your Infinity Puzzle trademark? But you'd have to do the work constantly on every platform. I presume the other top hits on google, mymodernmet.com, and a n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com are the real deal, as they at least call out "nervous systems."

@nprofile…3lr2 I'm interested in your experience. I'm not a fan of the #patent system, but my experience with the #trademark system is not so great. It seems both systems are set up to work well only if everyone agrees to play by the rules. But with lower cost competitor who's attitude is "if we figure out how to build it then it's fair game to sell it," I question the value of $1000 (?) for a trademark per puzzle name.
