#Spotted on Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand
Two young humans (10?) are industriously draping a fence with neon green fake cobwebs.
Having MANY detailed discussions about the type of spider that would be living in their garden and how it could hypothetically eat any trick or treaters dropping by that evening.
A VERY BIG dog (Mastiff cross bull elephant?) feels that his nose DEFINITELY must be buried against his very serious human's plums.
Very Serious Human trying to have a very serious conversation about politics, pretending the deep breathing situation around his nethers is DEFINITELY not happening.
Three small humans (4 to 6?) are strutting along while brandishing pink balloons.
Looking disdainfully around at the other market goers, game faces on.
Pink balloon people are obviously the coolest people in the world.
Two men (40s?) are standing outside a voting station while debating life, the universe and their differing political views.
Joking and giving each other hell for being on the wrong side of the political fence.
Finally giving each other a manly hug and a back pat before going in to vote.
A small human (3?) is hugging Mum VERY tightly. Saying in the most earnest voice: "Mum, I LOVE YOU!"
Mum gives his ribs a tickle. "Love you too ya little terror." Giggles and laughter in the air.

A small human (3?) is crouched over a patch of grass, searching most intently. Holding a velvet marble pouch in one hand while saying with absolute gravity: "I've lost it Mum."
Mum reassuring him that they'll find it.
(Seen a while later, victoriously holding up a blue cats eye.)

Small humans charge out, laughing gleefully, heading for the nearest playground. Mum picking up the smallest, throwing her over her shoulder.
Giggles and snorts against her back.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand
A small human (5?) is studiously helping people fill up their water bottles at an old fashioned water fountain in a city square.
Officiously asking people to line up politely so he can "be VERY QUICK."
People complying while hiding smiles.
Two dust and mud covered men (40s?) are rolling down off a mountain biking track and into the city.
One calls to the other: "Beers after this?"
The other replies: "No beers t'night mate."
"But what was the point in goin' for a ride if we can't have a beer?!"
A woman (30s?) in a pale blue felted witch hat, wearing a fluffy blue jumper and small circular spectacles is sitting on a bench.
Gazing out at people coming and going on a sunny morning.
A faint, enigmatic smile on her face.
Two rambunctious puppies with very large feet (Mastiff cross cuddle puddle?) are rolling and rampaging through the front garden of a little wooden cottage.
A pale grey cat sitting on a nearby fence.
Judging from a safe distance.
A tiny human (2?) is RACING up to Nan with a big, wide-eyed smile on her face.
With maximum enthusiasm she bellows: "NAN NAN NAN NAN."
"What?"
"I SAW A BUTTERFLY!"
Any typos spotted in this post did not manage to spot a butterfly today. If typos spotted, they'll be having a chat with a stranger who can only be a covert witch on holiday in her most cosy hat and woolly jumper.

Hey lovely people, no spotted post today. We've just finished the second-last online event for Beautiful Words Festival and are so grateful to everyone who's attended.
The final event in two days is going to be so special.
I get to chat with the amazing, Kim. M. Watt, a tremendously successful indie author and one of the loveliest people in the business. Kim's one of the most keyed in people that I know in indie publishing, so this should be phenomenal. She always has the best stories too. The last time we chatted she told an amazing one about a swimming pet sheep!

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A man (30s?) is snoozing on his back on some grass in a park.
A fast asleep tiny human (1?) sprawled across his tummy. Both soaking up the spring sunshine as a tūī calls from a tree branch overhead.
A man (60s?) has just ordered a serve of ginger crunch and another of caramel slice.
His partner laughs, asking: "They BOTH for you?!"
He shrugs and says: "Yeah. Life's short, couldn't decide."*
A young human (7?) and a border collie are waiting outside a dairy.*
Both watching the door with total focus only to grin with happiness when a teen (14?) walks out with two sausage rolls.
All sitting in a row on the bench outside, eating their lunch. (One bite for them, one for Dog Friend.)
A small human (5?) is staring at a very big (and rather deceased) tarantula mounted, framed and hanging on the wall of a shop.
Holding up his hand,
then looking at the spider.
Then holding up his hand...
then looking up at the spider.
Then shaking his head emphatically and walking off.
Nope.
A small human (5?) dressed in a dinosaur hoodie is playing a game of foosball.
Doing big dinosaur roars when her players don't do what she wants them to do.
Foosball Dinosaur stomping around the table when Big Sister declares herself the winner.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand
Two young humans (6&8?) are seeing who can swing the highest.
Side by side.
Back and forward.
Kicking their legs out.
Gleefully trying to touch the sky.
A small human (3?) is skipping along next to Dad while holding a threadbare plushie bunny. With utmost solemnity he says: "Dad I REALLY think you should carry me."
Dad says: "Why'd ya think that mate?"
"Cos Rabbit's got VERY TIRED legs."
A woman (70s?) wearing a regal sapphire blue turban is having a tea party with two small humans (2 &4?).
Cups, saucers and a teapot set out neatly on a big floral scarf.
A big magnolia tree overhead.
Curious ducks waddling over to investigate.
A tiny human (2?) is EXTREMELY INDIGNANT that a very elderly dog (pug cross snuffle beast?) is not showing more sympathy over the fact that her shoe has come off. Meanwhile Elderly Dog seems quite unbothered by his bad manners and is inspecting a nearby shrub for widdling potential.
Two men (30s & 50s?) wearing high vis and cement spattered work boots are sitting on the back of a ute*. Eyes half closed to the spring sunshine.
Legs swinging amiably as they both eat sandwiches.
Any typos spotted in this post were rather charmed to spot a very special tea party today. If typos spotted, they'll be trying not to laugh at the sturm und drang coming from a small human who is berating a completely unconcerned elderly pug about his lack of sympathy for her shoeless plight.
*A ute is a pickup or truck.

#Spotted on a Rainy Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small human (5?) is holding an umbrella up as HIGH as he can to shelter Nan from a light rain shower.
Expression solemn.
This job is serious business.
Nan crouching down a little to fit underneath, wearing a softly amused smile.
A woman (60s?) is having a VERY serious conversation with her partner. Expression stern, voice sharp.
But what is this?
Her partner sneaking a piece of bacon of her plate while she's talking?
And then another one?
And now a bite of sausage?
His eyes smiling cheekily as the lecture goes on.
A man (20s?) wearing a hoodie, black jeans and battered sneakers is strutting along.
Singing to himself as he goes, only to be stopped by a woman (30s?) who says: "OMG I've had that song in my head all day too!"
A young human (8?) is running through the markets, roaring to someone behind her: "I'M GOING BUT I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHERE I'M GOING!"
A passing man (60s?) saying: "Isn't that all of us?"
A small human (3?) is clutching a wheel of camembert cheese to her chest and wearing a big watery frown.
Dad asks what's wrong and she bellows with utmost distress: "MY CHEESE IS SAD!"
Dad trying to commiserate in between belly chuckles.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small human (3?) in a sparkly blue dress with sparkly red shoes is cycling a tiny tricycle as FAST as she can go!
A big placid dog (Staffy cross snuggle?) is trotting at her side. Two friends off on an adventure.
A cafe server (20s?) is engaged in serious engineering chat with a customer (40s?).
Saying she's worried she's failed a recent probability exam.
Being comforted with the news that her customer nearly failed his too and that it didn't affect his career in the slightest.
Cheerful smiles all around.
A little scruffy and scrappy dog (privy carpet cross terrier?) is patiently waiting for his human to order a coffee.
Wagging his tail optimistically at a nearby table eating their breakfast.
An amiable doggy grin on show.
A woman (70s?) grabs her friend's hand and excitedly says: "Come see my new old car Bev! I got it for two thousand bucks and it's a smasher!"
Her friend laughs. "I hope you don't mean that literally!"
Twelve little ducklings are paddle-zooming here...
and there...
and here...
and there...
Little fluffy bodies weaving around and about their mum and dad.
Sun sparkling on water.
Any typos spotted in this post had the most amazing and fun conversation with the lovely and respected Māori poet, Teoti Jardine. What a treat! If typos spotted, they'll be super grateful for all the lovely people who attended. (Thank you so much!)

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A tiny new human is being snuggled in Mum's arms as Mum sits in a park, gazing out over a gently rushing river.
Tiny Human does not care for the view, however.
Tiny Human's fast asleep.
Blowing little milk-drunk bubbles.
A picture of total serenity.
Two gangly and tall teens (14 & 16?) are being supervised by their very short mum as they offload two kayaks from the back of a ute.*
Guffawing, goofing and making a ruckus.
Mum threatening to whip them into line with a kayak paddle.
For some reason they're not taking her seriously...
In a small country town: Two tree doctors are cutting down a lemon scented gum on the side of the road while a woman (30s?) directs traffic.
Giving everyone who passes a big jazz hands wave.
The smell of Australia wafting on the breeze in Aotearoa.
Three mud covered small humans (3-6?) wearing farm clothes and gumboots* are rampaging down a shady walking track.
Roaring instructions to each other about the BIG MONSTERS that they're running away from.
Gleeful cackles as they hide behind a clump of fern trees.
A woman (50s?) is drinking a hot chocolate, saying to a friend: "I just feel like I need to expand my horizons, you know. I feel like I need MORE..."
Her friend says with absolutely seriousness: "Have ya tried knitting?"

#Spotted During the School Holidays in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A rotund and spotty pony (Shetland cross toadstool?) has a rather itchy bottom and has decided the BEST scratching post possible is the foreleg of a large shaggy Clydesdale horse.
Big Horse appears content with this arrangement.
A jersey cow is kneeling by a fence, head poking through... reaching... reaching... for a promising looking patch of grass that looks exactly like all the other grass surrounding her.
But this stuff's DEFINITELY going to be tastier.
Tongue poking out.
If. Only. She. Could. Just. REACH!
In the driveway of little cottage surrounded by flowering shrubs: A duo of young humans (6 & 9?) have set up a "Cookie and Nails" stand covered in a floral 70s style tablecloth.
Greeting their friend (5?) who's bounced up on a bunny-eared hopper ball.
Grinning and shading their eyes from the sun.
A small human (4?) is doing a special wiggly bendy, windy, wormy, groovy dance to greet the bus as it pulls up at the bus stop.
Cheerfully roaring a hello at the driver as he climbs on. Nan carrying his backpack behind him, laughing and explaining she's got him for the holidays.
Three small humans (2 to 7?) all wearing brightly coloured togs* are running AS FAST as they can into the sea. Shrieking and splashing and informing everyone that "IT'S COLD" before shrieking and splashing some more.
Fun on a spring afternoon.
Mum reading a book nearby.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A very small indignant dog (Chihuahua cross incident report?) is MOST offended that her human has had the TEMERITY to eat the last of a biscuit without sharing it with her. Shaking in moral outrage with a tail slightly wagging just in case a course correct is required and more biscuit is available.
A teen (13?) and Nan are sharing a pottle of hot chips while waiting for the bus. Heads resting together. Solving the world's problems one bite at a time.
A couple (80s?) are holding hands across a cafe table, smiling at each other as steam drifts from their cups of coffee. Every now and then bursting into great peals of laughter at something the other has said.
A big fluffy tabby cat has noticed that her human is home. Racing through the garden, meowing like an air raid siren only to stop right next to Human's legs. Stropping back and forward only to be scooped up for a welcome home snuggle.
A small human (4?) is walking behind Dad in a supermarket, saying: "Dad if you caught a really big fish, could it eat you? Not a small fish but a REALLY BIG fish?"
Dad shrugs: "Dunno Buddy. Maybe."
Small Human human looks unconvinced: "Why?"
Any typos spotted in this post are absolutely pancaked after a very busy weekend finishing up a 27 days writing festival. If typos spotted they'll be remembering the amazing dinner their wonderful friends cooked them last night. There's nothing like a tummy hugging meal to make a typo feel loved.

#Spotted From a Sunny Cafe in Aotearoa New Zealand
A effervescent woman (80s?) wearing a flowing yellow floral dress bustles from her wooden cottage and carefully crouches down on her garden path to offer a bumble bee a drink from an outstretched teaspoon.
Beaming when her gift is accepted.
A man (30s?) is cradling his tiny brand new human against his chest.
Jiggling her up and down.
Murmuring softly and gentling "Shhhing," when she makes little awake noises.
He's sleepy, and every now and then looks hopefully at the counter for his coffee,
but there's contentment here.
Two bubbly women (50s?) are catching up.
One's hot chocolate arrives and while she's distracted by something out the window, her friend deftly snaffles her marshmallows.
Popping them into her mouth.
Only the faint cheeky twitch to her mouth giving the game away.
A man (60s?) who looks like a piratical Ernest Hemingway, with a fish hook earring and an immaculate short grey beard is sipping a cappuccino while reading a timeworn paperback Hemingway.
He's not the old man and the sea, but he is the (not so) old man with a coffee.
A brown sausage dog is jauntily trotting along, nose pointed forward.
But what is this?!
ANOTHER BROWN SAUSAGE DOG?! (Gasp!)
He'll see about that.
A stern bark is required before they decide they're friends. Noodly bodies side-by-side as they give each other a polite introductory sniff.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
Two small humans (5 & 7?) are skipping either side of Dad down the street.
Holding his hands.
Their school bags bobbing up and down on their backs as they excitedly tell him about ALL the things they did at school today.
A woman (20s?) wearing colourful clothes, is sitting on her pushbike waiting for the light to turn green.
Smiling to herself as she does a little dance to the music in her earbuds.
A small moment of happiness before she rolls on to the rest of her day.
A small human (4?) is dinosaur ROARING and STOMPING towards a cafe door.
Dad asks him to open it and he pushes
and pushes
and PUSHES.
But what is this?!
The door is too mighty for Small Human T-Rex's arms?
Time for Dadosaurus to come to the rescue!
Two small humans (3 & 5?) are piecing together a wooden jigsaw.
One's technique involves considered thought before trying to see if a piece will fit.
The other is going for a ram-it-in-and-see approach with added industrious GNNNRAAAAR noises.
Both seem perfectly content with this arrangement.
A young human (8?) in a tie dye hoodie is hovering next to Dad while he eats his breakfast in a cafe.
Her fork is poised.
Her attention is focussed.
That hash brown will be hers the minute Dad is distracted!
Thwarted!
Dad gobbled it up in one bite!
Hmm... what about that sausage though...

#Spotted in a Cafe in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A woman (50s?) is packing a bright red suitcase into the back of her car.
She crouches down, patting a silky terrier on the head, saying: "Alright m'darling. Are you ready to come for a drive?"
Silky terrier gives her a tail wag and is picked up for a smooch as he's put into the car.
A red cloud kelpie puppy is sitting on his human's lap at an outdoor cafe table.
Eyes sharply focussed on his human's pen as she does a crossword.
Mind controlling the words onto the page.
A small human (3?) is sitting at Mum's feet in a cafe, frowning grumpily at the Rubik's Cube is his hands.
He's not sure how this thing works.
All he knows that he does not disapprove of all this blue on the red side.
Hmm... maybe Dad can fix it.
Three men (50s to 70s?) wearing variations of plaid and blue jeans are listening to a younger man (30s?) with a very new looking moko* and a booming cheerful voice tell them about a recent trip. Sharing news about aunties, uncles and cousins, nieces and nephews over coffees and sausage rolls.
A serious looking couple (20s?) are sitting at a corner table.
Holding hands, expressions earnest.
But what is this?!
A small human at the next table (3?) roaring: "I'M A TRAIN! CHOO CHOO!"
Serious couple now stifling smiles.
Maybe not so serious after all.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
An Australian cafe owner is regaling two customers of that time he was bitten by a snake and didn't die.
Bushy eyebrows waggling to punctuate the dramatic bits of the tale.
Thoroughly enjoying his appreciative audience.
A wiry, weather beaten man (60s?) with a kind face is pouring over a map of a Great Walk with a woman (20s?). Dad excitedly sharing all the tips he's learned from years of tramping.
Both sitting shoulder to shoulder.
Big mugs of filter coffee sitting before them.
The vibe is warmth and sharing.
A VERY wistful Dalmation has rested her head on the lap of her human as he butters some toast.
Doggy eyes upcast.
Emitting a low enquiring "Roooowrrr?" every few seconds. That toast SHALL be hers.
Hundreds of industrious bees are giving a magnificent cheery tree's blossoms a good seeing to.
Buzzing too and fro from flower to flower.
Stray petals drifting prettily to the grass below.
A young human (10?) and his big brother (13?) are playing soccer on a big empty oval.
Taking turns practicing their best "I've been injured! Penalty! Penalty!" falls.
Comically clutching knees and roaring to the sky before getting up and exchanging roles.
Experts in training.
Any typos spotted in this post were delighted to catch a bunch of tramping tips this morning. If typos spotted, they'll be wondering if they could spare a week in January to do a nearby walking track (Abel Tasman). Hopefully the weather will stay good!

Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

Sneezing before she moves on to a more tasty spot.
Birds calling overhead.
The scent of green on the breeze.
A very small BUT VERY STRONG puppy (Boxer cross steam roller?) is tugging his human along a riverside walking track.
Human laughing as puppy first pulls this way...
then that way...
then this way.
SO many smells and all of them SO interesting!
Must collect them all (with a waggy tail!)
A big family (teens to 80s?) are sitting on the porch of a country cottage.
Basking in the sun.
Mugs of tea and coffee in hand.
A big woolly dog sprawled at their feet.

Laughter ringing over the water as they watch it flow to sea.
The sweet smell of camelias in the air.
A tiny new human has decided that she is MOST unhappy.
Dad's trying with the back pats, the gentle bouncing, the rocking back and forward but NOPE.
Bleating like a little lamb as Granny collects her for a snuggle and then...
Quiet...
(New Dad looking VERY relieved.)
A woman (40s?) is trying to take a selfie of herself, her mum and her aunt.
All howling with laughter as they realise every picture is of their nostrils, their chins and of the crumbs from the cake they've just been enjoying.
Oh well!
They're having fun anyway!
Now for more cake!
A man (20s?) is sitting in a sunny spot in a cafe.
Eating a sandwich with all sign of enjoyment.
Looking dreamily out the window.
A laptop bag by his feet.
There's work for later, but for now this time's for him. (5)

Mouth open expectantly.
Watching...
Waaaatching...
Mum distracted!
Ha!
CHOMP!

A man (50s?) is standing by his car, demolishing a big slice of pizza with gusto only for some cheese to drip onto his shirt.
(Oh no!)
With a laugh and a sigh, he says to a passerby: "I can't take myself anywhere, can I?"
Before good naturedly finishing his lunch.
A tiny human (2?) in denim overalls and a pink jumper, hair in bouncy pigtails, is doing a waddle-stomp next to Mum as they walk down the street.
Singing a stompy song with utmost enthusiasm.
A huge grin on her face as she goes.

#Spotted While Roaming In Aotearoa New Zealand:
A tall man (30?) in sturdy hiking gear is standing in line for coffee with his partner.
He reaches into his pocket for his wallet and pulls a very odd expression before pulling out a roll of toilet paper.
His partner exclaims: "What's THAT doing in there?!"
He shrugs. "Made sense at the time."
A tiny human (2?) is taking holding his little brother's hand very seriously as they cross the road.
Walking next to Little Brother's pram with great gravitas.
Big Brothering is a VERY serious business indeed.
A flock of seagulls are all bobbing on a tranquil stretch of river.
Convivially floating towards the sea.
Flashes of white feathers as they duck under the water, here and there.
A woman (80s?) wearing a big fluffy woolly jumper, with fly away silver hair and a fae air is wandering down a tree-lined street with a mishappen cup of coffee in hand.
A tubby black staffy waddling at her side.
Both stopping to admire (and water) some daffodils before wandering on.
A man (30s?) is blowing up a pink balloon as a tiny human (2?) watches on, doing a little excited dance.
Dad's cheeks puff.
And puff.
And PUFF.
And...
(OH NO!)
Maybe he blew it up a little TOO much.
Oh well, he's got a spare!

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A woman (70s?) approaches a friend while holding a potted rosemary plant with a big blue bow around the pot.
Grinning as she hands it over, saying: "Happy birthday darl!"
Her friend asks. "Rosemary?"
"For remembrance."
Her friend exclaims. "How could I ever forget YOU?!"
They share a big hug.
It's the cafe lunchtime rush.
Every table is full.
A queue at the till.
People still approaching from down the street.
And a bustling server still finds the time to do a little ninja-move dance to make the barista laugh.
Grinning as he heads to the kitchen with arms overladen with dishes.
A man (40s?) is sitting at a cafe table with a vintage Monopoly box (70s edition?) in front of him.
Opening the lid and carefully lifting out the money and playing pieces.
Holding the boot up with a faint, thoughtful smile. (4)
A man (50s?) is approaching his garden gate when a huge fluffy cat darts out.
Meowing an enthusiastic hello.
Brushing first this way and that against his legs and asking to be picked up for a big snuggly hug.
Purring like a cuddly little tractor.
A man (80s?) is talking to a woman (40s?) over a pot of tea.
He says in a booming voice: "Your mother was my sunshine. I'll never go a day without missing her. Lit up my life and still does. Pure sunshine."
He nods emphatically.

If it's anyone's cup of tea, the lovely Perlina Lau from RNZ's Culture 101 program (think New Zealand's BBC, NPR or ABC) interviewed me last week about Beautiful Words. It was such a fun chat and quite a buzz to get so much time to speak on such a great program.
Still reeling a bit quite honestly! Would have shared earlier but I was a bit nervous about listening back to myself. (I've been a bit sleep deprived and was worried I'd just answered all questions with the equivalent of the Muppet's Mahna Mahna song.😂)

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small human (3?) in a T-Rex T-shirt has decided that the ONLY way to eat sushi is to MASH it into his mouth with maximum dinosaur glee.
Dad laughs and says: "Yeah, not optimal mate, might want to open your mouth there."
Small Human Dinosaur is unphased as he continues to devour his ricey prey.
A tiny human (2?) is on a mighty mission.
Walking around table in a cafe with a juice box in hand, politely asking if anyone would like to try some.
Patrons charmed and politely refusing, leaving him to nonchalantly shrug and head to the next table.
A very elderly dog with, wizard's eyebrows (Chihuahua cross Gandalf?) is being cradled in the arms of his human as they meander through a park.
There's a chilly breeze blowing off the mountains, but Tiny Wizard Dog is warm and loved.
Looking up at his human with magical amounts of adoration.
A sturdy small human with an industrious air (4?) wearing spiderman shorts, multiple spiderman Band-Aids and battered farm boots is marching down the street next to dad.
Holding Dad's hand as they talk about the BIG DIGGERS they just saw and how HUGE the holes they'd make could be.
Two men (50s?) in high vis are sitting side by side on a park bench. Watching a Mexican telenovela on a phone. Dramatic soap opera music drifting around them. Transfixed by the drama as they unpack their bakery lunches from brown paper bags.

Hey lovely people, it's the big launch party for Beautiful Words tonight here in Whakatū Nelson and if it's possible for a human adult to muppet flail, that's what I'm doing right now😂 Will resume Spotted transmission tomorrow.
If you're in the Nelson Tasman the launch is at 5:30pm. Drinks and nibblies and possibly a short speech from me if I can write it in time!

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small human (3?) is MOST AGGRIEVED. Tears streaming down his face, bottom lip a wibble-wobble.
Mum says: "What's wrong?"
He wails: "I bit Braden and he didn't THANK ME!"
Mum sighs. "You bit your brother and you want him to thank you?"
"YES! He ASKED me to bite him!"
A tiny human (2?) has a rather special shiny black feather in her hand. She's flouncing through the shampoo aisle of a supermarket.
Flitting her feather here.
Flapping it there.
Beaming and whispering: "Magic! Magic! Magic!" as she goes.
Two women (18 & 50?) are walking through a big department stall.
The older says to the younger: "It's a bit scary to work here at first but you find your feet quickly."
She gives her new colleague an encouraging smile.
A tiny human (2?) is riding a push-along bike down the footpath next to dad.
Roaring "BRUMBRUMBRUUUUM" as she goes.
A laughing passerby says to Dad: "Sounds like the muffler's gone on that bike. It's a loud one!"
Dad grins: "Loud since day one, mate! Never a quiet moment with this one."
A man (20s?) wearing a suit, with morning shower-damp hair runs into a cafe, skids to a stop at the counter and orders an almond croissant. Saying: "Gotta fuel up. Big day! Running late." Before skidding out the door again and run-walking down the street. Croissant crumbs trailing behind him.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A woman (40s?) is walking along the lawn mower aisle, cheekily poking her partner in the side.
He grumbles: "I'm very famous you know. You shouldn't do that."
She laughs. "That's news to me. Famous? Where?"
"Liverpool."
"You are not!"
"How'd you know? You've never been to Liverpool."
A small human (5?) is droopily dragging himself around the plant section.
Huffing and sighing, blowing disconsolate raspberries.
But what is this?!
A concrete garden gnome widdling into a fishpond?!
This is MUCH more interesting!
Two young humans (brothers? 6 & 8?) are playing a game of keep-me-off basketball on a quiet street.
The game plan is great.
Except...
The street is on a very steep hill.
Hmm the plan is mighty, the execution...ah well, they're having fun
Two tiny humans (1 & 2?) dressed in fairy costumes are doing a wiggly wobbly dance as Dad orders at a sausage sizzle stand. Arms outstretched as Dad collects their magnificent breakfasts. Dad reminding them to use their manners.
(What are manners when there are sausages to be had?!)
A small human (4) wearing a dinosaur T-shirt, Minecraft shorts and bare feet is skipping along the garden tool aisle. Roaring a song about Uncle Ben being a VERY BIG STINKY HEAD.
(Uncle Ben does not seem too worried about this potentially alarming cranial condition.) (5)

#Spotted on Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A man (80s?), the spitting image of Tom Waits in a disheveled tweed coat and a homburg is enjoying an espresso at an outdoor cafe table. Looking up and breaking into a tender smile on seeing a woman (80s?) approaching. Standing, he pulls out her chair.
A tiny human (2?) in an orange woolly jumper, with an adorably shy smile, is running up to every single person he meets before whispering, "Happy birfday!" Grinning and running off to the next person! Look at him go!
A dad (20s?) waiting for his lunch at a Filipino food truck is hugging a tiny new human (days?) to his chest, singing a soft song, smooching a small fuzzy black head of hair. The world is happening around him, but he's in the zone.
A small human (3?) in a bucket hat covered in crocodiles, wearing a tie dye T-shirt is singing a happy song while doing a boogie woogie in front of a cheese stall. Cheese is happening and it deserves some dancing!
A small human is MOST upset. Tears flowing, lower lip wobbling.
Dad says: "What's the problem Bud? What's wrong?"
Small Upset Human says with watery woe: "You weren't watching me when I did my trick!"
Dad giving him a hug and asking for a repeat performance.

#Spotted on a Rainy Day in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A man (80s?) in a neat suit and a green beanie is walking across a car park as rain starts to fall.
A woman (40s?) hollers from her car window: "D'you need a brolly? We've got an old one here. You can have it. It's not a problem."
He says: "If that's okay? Don't want to catch a cold!"
A tiny human (2?) is marching down the footpath with a fist full of daffodils. Holding them out in front of her like a magnificent talisman to ward off the grey of the day.
A teen (18?) is sitting across from Mum in a cafe. Rain hitting the window next to them as they talk softly in German. Mum buttering their scones as he pours their tea.
A teen (14?) waiting for Mum at a Daffodil Day Stand, says at MAXIMUM volume: "Hey, if they have daffodil day for all cancer, do they have, like, donut day for bum cancer?"
Daffodil Day Volunteer bursts into great peals of laughter.
Teen says to Mum: "What?! It's LOGICAL! EVERYONE loves donuts!"
Two cafe workers are leaning against the counter facing each other during a quiet moment. Sipping coffee from big mugs. Sharing plans for the coming weekend. Laughter and smiles as the rain pours outside.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand
A small human (3?) is huffing and puffing waiting for Mum to finish talking with a friend.
He tugs Mum's jumper.
Hmm, no reaction.
Well this is vexing.
What if he licks this cafe window?
Darting a look at Mum
Poking his tongue out as far as it'll go
aaaaand...
AH HA!
NOW she's paying attention!
A tiny human (2?) and Dad are hard at work colouring a picture of a horse.
Both holding onto the pink pencil.
Wearing matching frowns of concentration.
Rain falling outside the window.
The scent of coffee in the air.
A tiny human (2?) is told by Mum to return the three Matchbox cars he's been playing with to the cafe's toybox.
He studies them for a moment, hands on hips.
Mum's suggesting he take them all at once,
but nope!
One at a time.
That's the way.
Stomping back and forward with MAXIMUM purpose.
A tiny wriggly puppy (beagle cross bouncy ball?) doesn't quite understand the concept of going for a walk.
Roly-polying on his back.
Squirm tummying up to his human.
Waggy tailing at every passerby.
Puppy kisses for EVERYONE.
(Who needs to walk anyway when there's this much love to go around?)
A man (30s?) bolts into a cafe.
Expression harried,
Eyes wide as they alight on the cake display.
He stops in front of the counter and shakes his head.
"Don't tell me I missed the muffins!"
The server laughs. "You missed the muffins."
"I missed the muffins?!"
"You missed the muffins."

🧵Spotted A little While Ago in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A young human (9?)
is listening to a busker play
a rather good
acoustic version
of Dolly Parton's Jolene.
She asks her mum,
"Hey Mum,
do you know
what this song
is about?"
Her mum doesn't skip a beat
when she answers,
"Your aunt."
Gonna miss you Dolly. ❤️❤️❤️
Today's gonna be a little bit sad I think.
Hugs to anyone else out there who might need it.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A woman (80s?) who is small in stature, with a vibrant personality is standing in the biscuit aisle of a supermarket. She says to a passerby: "The problem with biscuits is that I eat all the biscuits! I never regret it. But I DO eat them all."
A tiny human (2?) is snuggling up to Dad with his face mooshed against Dad's cosy tum.
Mum's asking Tiny Human if he'd like to go play on some swings but he shakes his head.
Who needs swings when Dad hugs are to be had?
Two teen sisters (13 & 16?) are having an ARGUMENT.
Sniping and grumping and scowling while Big Sister fixes one of Little Sister's braids.
The words might be sharp but the love is there.
A man (50s?) is complimented on his extraordinarily dapper mustard yellow trousers by a friend. He says with a bashful smile: "Yeah, I felt a bit self conscious wearing them, but I figure you only live once, eh?"
A man (40s?) is sitting at a window-front counter in a Thai restaurant. There's a big bowl of tom yum in front of him and he's tucking in with a happy smile. Waving at friends who spot him inside, inviting them in.
Any typos spotted in this post are beginning to think the tunnel web spider living on their window sill may be channelling Shelob. She's lived there for a few months now rather peacefully, but she's getting VERY BIG and just nabbed a bumble bee in her web while they were writing this post. (AGHHH)

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A man (70s?) who resembles the Winter King from the show Adventure Time is sitting at a sunny cafe table, huddled over a big cheese scone with a proprietorial air. Admiring the two huge pats of butter he's just been given.
Yes, yes...
This is satisfactory.
A tiny human (1.5?) is waddle-strutting down the street with Grandad's wallet tucked officiously under her arm.
Grandad ambling along behind her, every now and then saying: "Mind where ya go Janey."
A teen (13?) says pensively: "I've thought a lot about it and I've decided I REALLY suit yellow."
Her friend gives her a look: "You sure about that?"
"Yeah. I am. Yellow is PSYCHICALLY my colour."
A tiny human (2?) gripping a croissant in one fist is running up to people in the street, informing them in hushed tones: "I'm fast!"
She pulls a croissant-themed, Usain Bolt lightening bolt pose and whispers: "Zooom."
A tiny dog (Chihuahua cross cat burglar) is watching her human take a muffin from his lunch box.
He sets it on the park bench at his side.
He pulls a paperback out of his bag and turns, only to discover that he no longer has a muffin.
Tiny Snaffling Dog is not looking guilty AT ALL.
Any typos spotted in this post decided to tackle the mighty jungle in their back yard this morning. If typos spotted, they'll be marvelling at just how many neighbourhood cats can gather to watch one person swear at rampant bamboo. (So many cats. Refusing to help with their little paws.)

#Spotted on Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small human (5?) is giving Nan a BIG HUG as they walk through the markets.
Nan's got an arm around his shoulders and is asking if he'd like something for breakfast.
He shakes his head, saying: "Not yet."
Snuggling closer with a happy smile.
A tiny human (2?) in a sparkly dress stops abruptly next to a bakery truck and sits down on her big fluffy teddy bear.
Dad says: "What ya doin' there Agnes?"
Tiny Sitting Human gives dad a very matter of fact frown before roaring: "I'M WEEING."
For some reason Dad looks a bit discombobulated.
A big, serious man (30s?) with a big bushy beard, wearing a plaid shirt, shorts and bare feet is marching along holding a box of cabbages.
Walking with purpose.
Serious Cabbage Man has Serious Cabbage Business to attend to and no one's gonna stop him.
A small human (4?) wearing a knitted jumper with trains on it is hugging a big cauliflower to his chest as he walks next to Mum.
With a slightly worried expression he says: "Do you think Dad will like the cauliflower I picked?"
Mum gives his hair a ruffle. "Yeah. I reckon he will. Ya did good."
A small human (3?) has just been given a smiley face sticker by a stall owner.
But where to put it?
Hmm.
Maybe... just maybe... her nose is the right place...
Yep!
That's about right.
Trying to look at her new magnificent nose sticker with crossed eyes as she walks next to Dad. (5)

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small human (3?) is marching into a bakery with Dad. Arms swinging at his side, chest puffed up with importance.
Cloaked in an adorably oversized high-vis vest.
Dad's hardhat on his head.
He's on the job, and at the moment that job is ordering a potato pie with EXTRA tomato sauce.
At a crosswalk: A small human (4?) is saying: "Hold my hand Mum. You have to look both ways when you cross the road."
Mum following this sensible advice.
Crossing and heading into a nearby museum.
There is science and history to explore!
A greyhound wearing a floral pink coat and a pretty orange collar is trotting along next to her human (80s?).
A passerby compliments them on the doggy couture and Greyhound's Human beams: "I figure she deserves a bit of spoiling after the life she had before. She's m'best friend now."
A man (50s?) in work clothes is standing in front of a MASSIVE overgrown garden with his hands on his hips, expression pensive.
A passerby says: "Big job today?"
He nods stoically. "Yup. Big job. Not a bad one but a big one."
Two women (20s?) in business casual are sitting on some steps leading up to a cathedral. Lunchboxes on their laps. Amiably chatting. Soaking up some winter sun on a Friday lunchbreak.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A woman (60s?) with a sparkling laugh, wearing a bright pink top, is leaning on a mobility aid while catching up with a friend.
Exchanging all the latest news about life, family and friends as they wait in line for coffee.
Ordering two melting moments to go.*
A roly poly black woolly dog (Labradoodle cross long pillow?) is amiably roaming about a cosy pub. Sidling up to patrons with a doggy grin.
Waiting patiently to see if pats are on offer,
then moseying on to the next table.
Getting all the love.
A couple (50s?) are sitting across from each other in a pub based in an old church. Playing cards between them. Game faces on. Quiet conversation with the odd burst of laughter around them.
A tiny human (2?) has decided that the best way to get to her front door is via:
This patch of ivy.
This tall grass.
This tangle of winter-bare hydrangea bush and
Around this BIG lemon tree.
Dad standing on the porch asking: "Ya right there bub?"
She emphatically bellows: "Yes!"
A slinky grey cat has spotted new humans wandering past her home.
Her collar bell jingling, meowing a hello, she trots over to introduce herself.
Will they be friendly?
Yes!
Win!
She flops on her back and flashes her tummy.
Blinking love eyes.

Any typos spotted in this post were charmed to overhear that one of the lovely baristas at a favourite cafe has met someone who makes him happy. If typos spotted, they'll be trying not to laugh at the disgruntled noises being made by a poodle who isn't getting his demanded allotment of scone.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

He says: "She came in here for coffee and asked me out! Turns out she's a friend of a friend. It's been five days and it's pretty sweet, eh."
A rather serious looking white dog (poodle cross accountant?) is sitting on his human's lap. Snuffling and grrrmphing as his human repeatedly neglects to give him some of her scone. Serious Dog has done the calculations and he's at least due half!
Two road workers (20s & 40s?) in full high vis are relaxing on a patch of grass during smoko*. Both soaking up some winter sun. Tummies shaking as they make each other laugh.
Two teens (14?) are walking along a street lined with flowering magnolia trees.
Sharing a sandwich.
Solving the world's problems.
Big blue sky.
A tūī serenading them from a tree branch overhead.
A woman (70s?) is saying to a friend: "Did I tell you that I took Mum to the movies last night? She loves a horror flick and it was an absolute nightmare. I didn't sleep at all! She's ninety four! You'd think she'd be over all that by now."

A chilly wind blowing but he's in his happy place.
Wearing a huge, euphoric grin.
A small human (5?) is skipping his absolute hardest to keep up with his running big brothers (7 & 9?)
Puffing and huffing.
Face pink.
They're calling back for him to run like them,
but NO!
He shall skip and he shall skip and that's that.
A big shaggy dog (Old English Sheep Dog cross bean bag?) is sitting on the back of his human's trike.
AWOOOING the song of his people as they roll along a beach side road.
People laughing as they pass.
At the opening of a gallery space, hundreds of people are standing quietly, the people at the back straining to listen to the speaker up the front.
Down the back, a small human (3?) is saying very earnestly in a whisper-roar: "I'M BEING VERY GOOD AND KEEPING QUIET AREN'T I DAD?!"
Any typos spotted in this post were absolutely delighted to see snow on the mountains when they went for a short beach walk this morning. If typos spotted, they'll be stopping to laugh at a passing dog who is intent on serenading his city.

A flash mob have formed!
Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees is playing.

Expression fiercely intent as she mirrors the moves.
A tiny new human (months?) is studying the world around her from the vantage point of Dad's arms.
Someone makes a loud noise and Tiny Human's face screws up in a disgruntled frown.
A friend hoots with laughter and says: "And there it is! In the frown! Perfect family resemblance!"
Dad laughs.
A small human (4?) is sitting on a race car ride outside a supermarket.
Gran's put a dollar in the slot and it's going back and forward, but not fast enough for Small Human Race Car Driver's liking.
But wait!
Everyone knows that if you lean REALLY FAR FORWARD, it'll make anything go faster!
A small human (5?) has just walked into an indie toy shop crammed to the rafters with toys.
Lego!
Slime!
Puzzles!
Board games!
Breathing out with an awed expression he turns and says to Mum: "Can we stay here FOREVER?!"
A tiny human (2?) is roaring "DOGDOGDOGDOGDOGDOG!" while pointing to a grey staffy that's sauntering through the markets with his human.
Sauntering Staffy seems completely unfazed by all this adoration. He is a very good dog.

A tiny human (2?) dressed in a purple jumpsuit is on the run!
She's headed for the muddiest of muddy puddles.

Dad's racing behind her, a panicked look on his face.
Will he catch her in time?
WILL HE CATCH HER IN TIME?!
...
A last minute dive.
And...
SAVED!
An elderly and rather sweet round dog (King Charles Cavalier cross marshmallow?) is scampering along behind her jogging human (70s?)
Night is falling, and they might be a little slow, but they'll get there eventually!
Navigating through a lush green field.
Cows grazing in the distance.
A small human (4?) is approaching people in a cozy cafe with an EXTREMELY serious expression.
Holding his hand out to everyone he encounters.
Introducing himself with absolute gravity, saying: "How do you DO?!"
New friends thoroughly charmed.
Two men (70s?) are sitting across from each other in a cafe.
Cheerfully comparing news about their respective "dicky tickers".

Introducing Moopsy*, the little stray can that I have mentioned quite a bit over the past few months.
We're bunkered down getting our next Tiny Moments of Joy book to the printers today in between co-ordinating a writing festival, so I haven't left the house and am verging on turning into a giant profanity beast, BUT we have #spotted something out our kitchen window.
That thing is a very fluffy thing. A very moody fluffy thing that will only eat his breakfast if patted, but will otherwise try and eat anyone who dares walk up our garden path.
Except for my lovely partner Tony.
For some reason Moopsy loves Tony with the might of an exploding sun and regularly tries to give him all the love in his small, malevolent fluffy form.
In turn, Tony seems to view Moopsy as the smooshiest of fur beasts, insisting that he's really a softy and not out to steal our immortal souls.
First thing, every morning, Tony sits on our top garden step while drinking his coffee with Moopsy sitting on his lap, purring and acting like he's not a furry little psychopath.
The rest of the day, Moopsy lives in a cat nest in the winter-bare ivy on our garden fence like a fluffy, moody potato, ready to launch himself at any other cat (or human) who dares venture into his territory.
I think we may now have a cat.
*Moopsy is based on an adorable creature that drinks bones from Star Trek Lower Decks.
(More in alt text, as always.)

#Spotted in the Countryside in Aotearoa New Zealand:
In a mountain valley: Twin new lambs are drinking their breakfast while Mum munches on some long green grass.
Lamby tails wagging.
Mum quietly baaing.
Mist rising over a nearby riverbend.
A pair of paradise ducks flying overhead.
A tubby pony is most definitely the king of his paddock.
There might be a big horse (Clydesdale cross Sherman Tank?) on his turf but Tubby Pony's prepared to show it who's boss.
Gruntle-neighing.
Trotting around Big Horse like an X-wing circling the Death Star.
He. Will. Be. Victorious!
A long haired little white dog (Shih Tzu cross mop?) is jauntily trotting through a fern forest.
Her humans don't notice the giant stretch of mud ahead and Little Dog trots right in and...
...
Hmm...
...
A long haired little muddy dog (Shih Tzu cross bog monster?) is jauntily trotting...
A farmer (30s?) is riding a quad bike over a hilly paddock. A border collie a streak of black and white at his side.
A big moody sky overhead.
The scent of coming rain in the air.

And then... "UPSY DAISY!"
Tiny Human chortles and guffaws in reply.
A woman (30s?) is walking around a fruit and vegetable shop, playfully booping her partner on the backside with a large telegraph cucumber as he selects a cauliflower. Grinning angelically when he tells her to behave.

Exchanging weightlifting tips with a friend sitting at the next table.
His partner inside, ordering cake.
Any typos spotted in this post would like to offer a cake of thanks to the lovely people who wished them a happy anniversary yesterday. If typos spotted they'll be having some soup for dinner after eating their body weight in cheese and tiramisu last night. (So much cheese. It was delicious.)

Looking there
Laughing and saying, "This place isn't THAT big, I have NO idea where they've gone!"
Seen still wandering with coffees over five minutes later.
(Seen sneakily drinking a coffee a little bit after that.)
A woman (60s?) is grumpily directing her husband as he reverse parks a ute* piled with firewood into their driveway.

"They looked at me funny."
She bursts into laughter.

Her friend laughs: "Don't you mean pole DANCER?"
A man (20s?) has just ordered a take-away coffee.

Any typos spotted in this post are rather sad today to learn that their favourite cafe is closing in a month. If typos are spotted in this post, they'll be popping down to give the owner a hug. She's had a rough year.
*These are from RED cafe from 2 years ago. I've edited, proofed and written work there. It's where my lovely partner, Tony's written so much of his upcoming sci fi series. It's where we've made close friends. They'll be genuinely missed. ❤️

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
In an op shop* book nook a woman (60s?) wearing a blue and white striped pinafore and shiny red mary jane shoes is curled up in a big comfortable looking armchair. Engrossed in a paperback novel.
Turning pages.
Lost in her own world.
A woman (20s?) is pushing a pram holding a VERY BIG BOOK.
But wait!
It's not just a BIG BOOK!
There are little hands holding the BIG BOOK!
And is that a pair of little legs sticking out the bottom?
And is that a DINOSAUR on the back cover?
Ahhh, that explains everything.
A woman (30s?) wearing a bright green and pink dinosaur beanie is standing in line for cinema tickets.
Meanwhile, a tiny human (1?) is standing behind her, completely enraptured.
Eyes wide. Tugging on Dad's hand to share the majesty.
Is it possible... that DINOSAURS live at the movies?!
A barefoot man (50s?) holding a tea cup and saucer is walking out of a white cottage with a bonkers flower garden.
Sipping tea as he turns this way and that to survey the floral mayhem surrounding him.
Yes.
This is satisfactory.
Two men (30s & 40s?) are hard at work in a park, tidying up garden beds, raking up leaves. Trading good natured insults that are getting more creative by the second. Psychedelic rock playing form a small speaker near a thermos and chilly bin* left under a tree.

He's got all the patience in the world today.
In a cafe, two women (80s?) are learning towards each other. Talking in hushed tones as one efficiently halves a cheese scone and butters each side for the two of them. Extra butter for her friend.

A mighty head noogie battle commences!
Four adults (30s-40s?) are standing in a circle talking about elections and cost of living.

She's got the idea!
A tiny human (1?) is being hefted into the air by Dad.
Giggles and squeals as he's thrown
up... and then up...

A woman (50s?) is talking about the new gallery space that will be opening up soon, saying: "What we're hoping, is that our new space will be organised better than this one with minimal clutter."

People of all makes and models are hugging, talking, crying as the closure of a vital community space is celebrated.

A tiny dog (poodle cross feather duster?) is trotting by a row of vintage chairs.

#Spotted While Roaming During the School Holidays in Aotearoa New Zealand:
At the beach: Mum (40s?) is presiding over a picnic table covered in a plastic polka dot tablecloth.
Smacking Dad's hand with a serving spoon as he reaches for not one but TWO barbecued sausages.
Dad howling in feigned outrage.
Young humans cackling gleefully.
Perfect family moment.
At the beach: Mum (30s?) is patiently holding a fishing rod, waiting for a catch, sea calm.
Meanwhile her small human (3?) is doing some incredibly successful imaginary fishing next to her while holding a driftwood stick.
Triumphantly roaring: "I GOT ANOTHER ONE. AND ANOTHER ONE! OH YEAH!"
A small human (4?) dressed in multiple tutus, a red plaid jacket and gumboots* is helping Dad mow the lawn by skipping along behind him, blowing bubbles with a MASSIVE home made wire bubble wand.
A tiny human (2?) is helping his cousin (8?) play on a public piano in front of a country fruit and vegetable shop.
Cousin is doing his best to get in a smooth C scale.
Tiny Human is headbutting the keys while providing an avante garde: "LAAA LAAA LAAA OWWW" accompaniment.
Art in progress.
A small human (3?) is helping Dad shop in the tool aisle of a hardware store by insisting he explain to her blue plushie horse what each tool does.
Blue Plushy Horse seems rather unimpressed at the news that drills make holes in things, but Dad doesn't seem to mind.

#Spotted at the Beach in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small EXTREMELY stubborn pony has decided that he would very much like to trot into the sea for a BIG splash.
His small human rider is roaring and spluttering about this NOT being a good idea, but Stubborn Pony's not having it.
It's in the water for them and that's final.
Two small humans (5 & 6?) have decided that the best way to build a sandcastle is on the tideline.
That way...
Every shovelful of sand they pile up...
Washes away IMMEDIATELY!
Oh no!
Recriminations!
It's definitely the architect's fault, not the engineers!
(They're having SO much fun.)
A young human (9?) is stomping up to Mum and announcing in a disgruntled grump:
"Mum, Levi is SO ANNOYING!"
Another young human (7?) races up behind him, radiating outrage, stating emphatically. "No! I'm NOT annoying. I'm just DIFFERENT!"
A man (30s?) is setting up a GoPro on a tripod to film his tiny human (1?) playing on the sand.
But what is this?!
Tiny Human has just run head-long into the tripod?!
(Whoopsie Daisy!)
Dad scooping her up and making it all better.
Maybe cuddles are better than pictures anyway.
A couple (20s?) are snuggled up in the back of a camper van under some fluffy blankets on a chilly winter's day.
The back door's open, giving them a clear view of the beach and snow-capped mountains beyond.
The hint of coming rain in the air, but they don't care.
Cosy and warm. Together.

#Spotted while roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A burly man with a sturdy tum (40s?) is standing next to a vintage Triumph, smiling affectionately as he helps his son (12?) zip his leather jacket up.
Mist in distant green valleys.
A rainbow overhead.
Perfect day for a ride with the boy.
A small human (4?) is helping Dad grocery shop.
Dad's dawdling near the sausage roll counter and she's not having it.
Arms crossed, legs akimbo, she roars: "MUM SAID WE NEED POTATOES!"
Dad grins: "Yeah, but she didn't say NO sausage rolls did she?"
Small Human is skeptical.
A teen (13?) wearing stripy pajamas is pushing her friend, who's sitting in a shopping trolley down the street in a small, bohemian country town.
Both cackling uproariously as Passenger Teen's phone emits the instruction: "At the next intersection, turn left."
A noble woolly brown dog (Poodle cross 18th C European Monarch?) is waiting regally by the door of a cafe.
Benevolently accepting pats from adoring subjects who pass.
Every now and then giving a magnanimous subdued tail wag for his human who's enjoying a coffee inside.
He's a VERY good boy.
A small human (4?) has just borrowed a library book that she likes VERY much and she would like everyone to know it.
Walking along, reading with it in front of her face.
Every now and then peeking around the side to see who's noticing.
Dad's gentle hand on her back, guiding her as they go.

#Spotted At the Beach in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A weka* is VERY curious about a sandwich currently being absent-mindedly held by a man sitting in a beach chair, reading a paperback.
If Weka is very quiet...
And very sneaky...
And sidles up like this...
Maybe...
It shall have that sandwich...
A young human (10?)
is crouched in the sand, painstakingly drawing the distant snow-capped mountains with her finger.
The tide's coming in and she doesn't have long,
but for now she's going to create art.
A beautiful, ephemeral moment.
A small family is playing a game of beach cricket.
Dad's bowling.
Big sister (7?) is fielding
And Mum is helping Smallest Human (4?) hold the bat.
Dad bowls and...
WHACK!
The ball goes FLYING.
Now everyone's running and RUNNING.
Cackles and giggles and splashing in the sea to get the ball!
Two women (20s?) are sitting side-by-side on a driftwood log.
Sipping take-out coffees. Bare feet held up to catch the sun as they admire the view.
Gulls calling overhead.
A man yelping as a weka steals his sandwich and scarpers in the distance.
Six small VERY rambunctious humans (2 to 8?) are running here,
and then there,
and then piling on top of each other
and then wrestling
and then howling for AUNTIE JILL to adjudicate
and then falling on top of each other again
then running
and playing
Making memories on a sunny winter's day.

🧵Spotted at a Matariki* Night Market in Aotearoa New Zealand:
Multiple small humans (1 to 6?) are Brownian Motion in human form as they bounce off each other,
run off in different directions,
then bounce off uncles, aunties, mums, dads,
then back again.
Giggling and snortling.
Breath chuffing in the cold night air.
New friends and play in the new year.
A young human (8?) is being address by his incredulous mum who's saying: "I gave ya $36 dollars! You went to get a donuts! Where's the change?!"
Young Human looks sheepish. "I uhm... got a lot of donuts?"
A tiny human (2?) in a fluffy unicorn onesie has decided that she shall roll everywhere tonight.
Mum and Dad are suggesting that using her feet might be helpful but she's adamant that rollypollying on the grass is the ONLY way to get around on this cold winter's night.
It's the unicorn way!
A stylish woman (40s?) in a tartan coat and beret is rubbing her tummy and laughing as she says: "I didn't mean to eat all the rice pudding, but it was SO GOOD and I ate all the rice putting and now I am made of rice pudding!"
A woman (80s?) wearing a vivid pink coat and a neon blue beanie is complimented on her fashion. She says: "I'm too old to be boring. Life's too short," then breaks into a wide sharky smile.

Any typos spotted in this post would like to report that the daddy long legs spider that is trying to meet its end in their bath tub has been rescued for the fourth time this week. If typos spotted, they'll be lecturing a spider on its life choices while putting it in a corner by the sink.

#Spotted at a free Light Festival in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small human (5?) with a fluffy unicorn hat is giving Big Brother a supercilious look as she demonstrates her ballet moves.
Can Big Brother plié?
NO!
Can Big Brother pirouette?
NO!
For some reason, Big Brother is not looking impressed! (Quel horreur!)
Hmm. Maybe a majestic leap is required...
A small human (4?) is MOST distressed!
Wailing, tears flowing, mouth aquiver.
Mum's explaining that they have to wait 10 minutes for their fish and chip order to be ready.
Abjectly devastated by this horrendous news, Small Human wails: "BUT THAT MEANS I CAN'T FEEL THE YUMMY IN MY TUMMY NOW!"
Four small humans (3 to 6?) are engaged in an amateur Puddle Jump Championship.
They have found the BIGGEST puddle and are doing the HUGEST leaps across.
Arms flailing, crowing triumphantly when they succeed.
This is FUN!
A small human (3?) pauses in a VERY detailed recitation of what Granny Said Yesterday.
Mum looks away from a food truck menu and says: "Well, you definitely have good ears doncha bub?"
Small Human nods seriously. "I'm REALLY good at hearing EVERYTHING."
A woman dressed in fairy couture is wafting around outside a beautifully lit cathedral.
Raising a giant bubble wand, she WHOOSHES is through the air.
BUBBLES!
Suddenly a flash mob of small humans appear!
Jumping, leaping chasing and popping bubbles with absolute glee.
