This week for #Fossilfriday we have another #Guess that #Lego #Fossil.
This sauropod can be found in
North America.
Hide your guesses behind a content warning, so others can guess without being spoilt. I will post the answer tomorrow (and to anyone who guesses correctly).
This was designed by Infinite Creativity .

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Cuvieronius
Before 1806, Alexander von Humboldt recovered the first remains of what the locals called a "giant" from Ecuador. He sent some of the fossils to George Cuvier. Cuvier recognised them not as giant humans, but relatives of the Mastodon.
In 1806 Cuvier referred to the fossils as the "mastodonte des cordilières" and the "mastodonte humboldtien" in a paper.
In 1814, Gotthelf Fischer von Waldheim named the species Mastotherium.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Spinops
In 1916, Charles Hazelius Sternberg and his son Levi Sternberg found two partial skulls, in a large bone bed near the Red Deer River in southern Alberta.
The fossils were sent to the Natural History Museum in London, and even Charles called them junk. There they sat for almost 100 years.
In 2011, a team led by Dr Andrew A. Farke re-examined the fossils and realised they represented a new species.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Ornithomimus.
In 1890, Ornithomimus velox was given a type species by O. C. Marsh. It was based off a partial hindlimb, and forelimb that had been found in 1889 by George Lyman Cannon.
He also named two other species O. tenuis, and O. grandis. Both are fragmentary, and now believed to be tyrannosauroid material.
In 1892, O. minutus was named by him as well. It's now thought to be alveresaurid material.

This weeks #Lego #fossilfriday is #Tylosaurus
In late 1860s, U.S. Army colonel John Butler Conyngham found the holotype.
In 1869 Edward Drinker Cope formally named it Macrosaurus proriger.
In 1870 Cope formally published it as Liodon proriger.
In 1872 Marsh argued that Liodon is distinct and should be called Rhinosaurus.
Later in 1872, after many name changes, Cope settled on Tylosaurus proriger. It is a whole thing.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Xenoceratops.
In 1958, fragments of a skull were found by Wann Langston Jr in the Foremost Formation. These fragments went into storage in the Canadian Museum of Nature.
In 2003, David C. Evans and Michael J. Ryan rediscovered the specimens and in 2009 they decided to do a more in depth study of the specimen.
In 2012, Ryan, Evans, and Kieran M. Sheppard described the new species species, naming it Xenoceratops foremostensis.

Between 1975 and 1977, José Bonaparte, Martín Vince and Juan C. Leal excavated the first fossils.
In 1977 they were reported in the scientific literature.
In 1980 they were formally named and described as Saltasaurus.
In 2010, Gregory S. Paul estimated the maximum length at 8.5 m (28 ft) and the weight at 2.5 tonnes (2.8 short tons)

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Suchomimus
In 1997 a large hand claw was found in Niger by David Varricchio
Through 1997-98 American palaeontologist Paul Sereno and his team at Gadoufaoua discovered Fossils that represented about two-thirds of the skeleton.
In 1998, Sereno, et al named and described the type species Suchomimus tenerensis, meaning crocodile mimic.
In 2026 it was suggested, but not confirmed, that it might be a junior synonym of Cristatusaurus.

The holotype was found in the late 1800s in Quarry 13 at Como Bluff, Wyoming.
In 1889, Othniel Marsh described it as a new species, Morosaurus lentus
In the 20th century it was found to be the same species as one named by his rival, Edward Drinker Cope.
This resulted in Morosaurus lentus being renamed to Camarasaurus lentus.

In 1914, Barnum Brown found the first fossils in the Red Deer River formation.
In 1922, William Diller Matthew and Brown named and described the type species of Dromaeosaurus.
Between 1922 and 1988 seven other species were named under the Dromaeosaurus unbrella.
Several of these have since been reclassified as other species or nomia dubia.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Huayangosaurus
In 2005, Benjamin P. Kear named QM F11050 as Eromangasaurus carinognathus.
However, earlier in 2005, Sven Sachs named QM F11050 Tuarangisaurus australis. This name thus take priority over E. carinognathus.
Later studies found Eromangasaurus is distinct enough to be its own species.
In a fun coincidence, Eromanga, means windy plain, locally, but means something very different in Japanese, with Ero meaning R18+ and manga meaning comic.

In 1979-80, partial remains of twelve stegosaurian individuals were found near Zigong China.
In 1982, they were named and described by Dong Zhiming, Tang Zilu and Zhou Shiwu as Huayangosaurus taibaii.
Some replicas show it with a Kentrosaurus style shoulder spike, others do not. I could only find an image of one without.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Protostega
On July 4th 1871, a Yale College Scientific Expedition, close to Fort Wallace, found the first specimen. Sadly this fossil was never described or named.
About 5 months later, E. D. Cope found and collected the first identified specimen in the Kansas chalk.
In 1872, E. D. Cope named the specimen Protostega gigas.
Several almost complete examples have been found, showing this animal was up to 14 feet long.

The answer for #Guess that #Lego #Fossil is #Trierarchuncus.
In 1980, fossils were found that were informally named as the "Hell Creek alvarezsaur" by Hutchinson and Chiappe in 1998.
In 2020 Denver Fowler and colleagues named the species and genus based on three claw phalanges from MD-I-2.
Trierarchuncus is named after Captain Hook, of Peter Pan fame, because of the distinctive large claw on its hand.
Its believed to have been an insectivore.

It was found in 1985 by Ouyang Hui near Jinquan, and reported as a Tuojiangosaurus in 1986 by Gao Ruiqi and colleagues.
It wasnt until 1992 when Gigantspinosaurus was described and named by Ouyang for an abstract lecture. But the name was generally considered a nomen nudum (not recognised as a species) in the west.
In 2006 it was disclosed that the abstract contained sufficient description to be recognised as its own species.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Monolophosaurus
In 1981, Dong Zhiming found a nearly complete skeleton during a stratigraphic exploration funded by the oil industry
In 1984 the fossil was finally unearthered
In 1987, before being formally described, it was called Jiangjunmiaosaurus in the press. This is a nomen nudum (a name with inadequate description, thus its invalid).
In 1993/1994, Zhao Xijin and Philip John Currie named and described the type species Monolophosaurus jiangi

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Smilodon
In the 1830s, Peter Wilhelm Lund and his assistants collected fossils in caves near Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
In 1839, he recognized some as hyena fossils and named them Hyaena neogaea.
In 1842, he revised this classification, while transitional to hyenas, they were distinct. He called this new species Smilodon.
In 1846 the first distinct large canine teeth were found, and an almost complete skeleton had be compiled from different individuals.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Umoonasaurus
In 1987 an opal miner in Coober Pedy found an opalised fossil. They were part of the Zorba Extension Opal Field.
In 1988, the chairman of the company Comrealty ("Mr. Sid Londish") bought the specimen. Later that year he donated it to the Australian Museum.
In September 1988, it was prepared by the Australian Museum.
In 2006, Benjamin Kear and colleagues named Umoonasaurus, part of Pliosauroidea and the most basal Rhomaleosauridae.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Kaatedocus
In 1934, a team headed by Barnum Brown, from the American Museum of Natural History, uncovered about 3000 sauropod bones.
In the 1940s, a fire at the AMNH destroyed most of the collected specimens.
In the 1960s, more of those bones were thrown away after falling apart in storage. Leaving about 10% of the original collected bones
In 2015, after reexamining the surviving bones, some where isolated and renamed Kaatedocus.

The weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Carnotaurus
In 1976 the National Geographic Society started sponsoring a project called "Jurassic and Cretaceous Terrestrial Vertebrates of South America"
In 1984, the eighth expedition led by Argentinian paleontologist José Bonaparte excavated a relatively complete (minus the tail and lower legs/feet) fossil.
In 1985, Bonaparte published a note presenting Carnotaurus sastrei as a new genus and species and briefly describing the skull and lower jaw.

The weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Vagaceratops
In the early 21st century a number of odd looking ceratopsian were found in the Dinosaur Park Formation.
In 2001, some of these fossils were named Chasmosaurus irvinensis.
In 2010, they were reexamined and renamed Vagaceratops irvinensis.
Vagaceratops was a medium sized ceratopsian. The frill has ten epoccipitals, eight of which were flattened and curved forwards, causing a jagged margin along the back of the frill.

The weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Baryonyx
In January 1983, plumber and amateur fossil collector William J. Walker found a rock with a large claw in it. After taking it home he realized the tip was gone
A few weeks later he returned to the same place and found the tip, a phalanx bone and part of a rib.
In February 1983, palaeontologists Alan J. Charig and Angela C. Milner, after seeing the find, went to the pit and found more fragments.
In 1986, Charig and Milner named it Baryonyx walkeri.

In 1818, Charles Kong first used the name Ichthyosaurus, but it was not a scientific description.
In 1819, James Everard Home formally described the first Ichthyosuarus, Proteosaurus, now Temnodontosaurus.
In 1821, Henry De la Beche and William Conybeare formally named Ichthyosaurus
In 1974, after an extensive search, C. McGowan reported the initial specimen lost.

The weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Einiosaurus
Einiosaurus gets its name from the Blackfeet Indian 'eini' meaning buffalo, and sauros meaning lizard.
In the early 1980s a paleontologist had been prevented from working the Willow Creek "Egg mountain" site
He had asked the local Blackfeet Indian Tribal Council for access to their lands, but been denied for some time. Then in 1985 he was granted access after a member witnessed the minimal damage done excavating a mosasaurid at Four Horns Lake

In 1882, Edward Drinker Cope named and described Edaphosaurus, based on a crushed skull and lower jaw.
In 1886, Cope erected the new genus Naosaurus for skeletal remains similar to Dimetrodon.
In 1907, Ermine Cowles Case suggested that the Edaphosaurus skull belonged to Naosaurus skeletons.
In 1910 a new skeleton was found with a skull and body together.
In 1913, Samuel Wendell Williston and Case synonymized Naosaurus and Edaphosaurus.

From what I have seen (about a half dozen emails) it seems like he was more interested in access to the geology of the property more so than the girls...
But he does mention the girls in his emails as well.
So yeah, we know he was not great but oh man is that gross.
Anyway, had to vent here a little.

That said, i would have its location change each year. Probably Inverloch the first year, then up to Murgon the next. Theres some really good fossil displays/sites even most paleontologists dont know about in Australia.

@nprofile…tkx6 Yeah thats more what im after. A pseudo-convention, where non-US based paleontologists can get together and talk about their most recent research and what not, without worrying about having to go to the USA. I went to the Brisbane SVP and it was fun, but we really need more smaller regional ones for those who cant get to the main one.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Megalonyx
The first fossils of a large animal were found in a cave in 1796 by Colonel John Stuart. He sent them to Thomas Jefferson as he was getting ready to become president.
Jefferson examined the femur fragment, ulna, radius and foot bones, including three large claws and wrote a paper about them. He named the animal Megalonyx from the Greek "Mega" (giant) and "Onyx" (claw).
In 1799 Caspar Wistar identified them as the remains of a Giant Ground Sloth

Apatosaurus was originally found by Arthur Lakes and Henry C Beckwith in spring 1877, in Morrison. They contacted Othniel Charles Marsh, and after sending him some of the fossils, he named the species Apatosaurus.
Two years later March discovered a larger, more complete specimen and called it Brontosaurus. This was later synonymized to Apatosaurus.
Its still debated if Brontosaurus is its own species or just Apatosaurus.

In 1986 the fossils were mentioned in a publication by Anne Warren and R. Jupp. It was not thought to be a temnospondyl due to it being of cretaceous age, far younger than any other found.
In 1989 more remains were found but the fossils were still highly fragmentary.
In 1997, Warren at al, formally described and named Koolasuchus

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Homo #neanderthalensis aka #Neanderthal
In 1829 Philippe-Charles Schmerling, found a partial skull in the Grottes d'Engis, Belgium. He thought it was a poorly developed human
In 1856 schoolteacher Johann Carl Fuhlrott recognised bones from Kleine Feldhofer Grotte in Neander Valley as distinct from modern humans. They were presented to anthropologist Hermann Schaaffhausen to study
In 1863 Neanderthal Man was proposed as a new species. This was formalised in 1864

This week for #Fossilfriday we have another #Guess that #Lego #Fossil.
This one I would rate as easy. This is a contender for the largest dinosaur ever.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Dakosaurus
Before 1846 several fossilized teeth were found in Germany and allocated to Megalosaurus
In 1846 Theodor Plieninger named those teeth Geosaurus
In 1856 Friedrich August von Quenstedt, renamed the Geosaurus maximus teeth a new genus with the name Dakosaurus
In 1871, Emanuel Bunzel attributed fossils to Megalosaurus. In 2012 they were reclassified to Dakosaurus.
In 2007 a partial skull was found of Dakusaurus, now considered a crocodylomorph

@nprofile…37zh @nprofile…q502 tbis is reminding me of the "how to spell potato" thing where they basically reverse engineered the spelling using the most insane extensions of the sounds possible. I cant remember how it was spelt but it was about 20 letters long... maybe it wasnt potato, but it was something similar if it wasnt.

@nprofile…37zh ngl idk. I normally hear soft C like cents in dollars and cents. I think thats to differentiate it from the stegosaurid Kentrosaurus, which has a harder K sound for the name.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Centrosaurus
Lawrence Lambe discovered the first Centrosaurus in the early 1900s.
The name, much like the similarly sounding Kentrosaurus, is derived from the Greek 'kentron' meaning pointy. It does not refer to the single horn, which wasn't found until much later. It refers to the points on the frill.
A bonebed found in Alberta contains hundreds of individuals of varying ages. It appears they all drowned while crossing a river.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Dacentrurus
Originally discovered in 1874 by James Shopalnd, he reported the find to Professor Richard Owen.
The original fossil conglomerate weighted 8 tones, but up to 5 tones was lost in the extraction process. What was left was loaded into crates and sent to London.
In 1875, Owen named the fossil Omosaurus armatus.
Later several other specimens that were classified as species of Omosaurus.
In 1902, Federick Augustus Lucas renamed them Dacentrurus.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Tupandactylus
In 1997 Campos & Kellner named a skull and partial lower jaw Tapejara imperator.
In 2003 another skull was named Tapejara navigans by Frey, et al.
In 2007 Tapejara navigans was renamed Ingridia imperator by Unwins, et al.
In 2011 T. imperator and I. imperator were reclassified as Tupandactylus, T. imperator and T. navigans
In 2021, a far more complete skeleton was found on T. navigans, its actually a sexually dimorphic female T. imperator.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Procoptodon
In the early 1800s, as Australia was being explored by white colonists, Sir Thomas L. Mitchell found fossil fragments of a maxilla from the Darling downs and sent them to England.
In 1846, Sir Richard Owen published on several large marsupials. One of those was Procoptodon, a very large short faced Kangaroo.
A recent trackway found in South Australia attributed to Procoptodon showed it didn't hop but walked bipedally
