Ok, so I have watched a *lot* of videos about the #iPhoneDuo and I think it is quite clear that we all should wait at least an hour after preorders go live to actually place our orders.
Is everyone on board with this? From all the impression videos I've watched, it really seems like the only course of action.
Wait at least an hour, ok everyone? I would really appreciate it.
Wait, I mean. I think it is really important.

Watching this short essay (11 min) arguing that Jared Leto is box office poison. The predator stuff is well known, but all his blockbuster roles over the last ~ decade have been pretty bad, and unsuccessful films. Except for one: Blade Runner 2049.
Well, at least arguably. I thought he was quite good, Jessi did too.
Then she made a good observation: He's good in that film because he plays, in part, a cult leader.

Jess and I watched the He-Man trailer (lol) and he plays Skeletor. Sigh. Finally decided to look him up.
Kind of a rough upbringing, went to Hollywood, blah blah. But there is *nothing* on the page about his weird island young girl cult thing. The word ‘island’ doesn’t appear once.

TIL that in 1986, the city of #Cleveland put on a big event where people could come downtown and fill balloons with helium.
They filled 1,500,000 balloons. Then let them all go at once.
The video thumbnail calls it a disaster. However, at least according to the aftermath that is covered, that’s an overstatement.
Just watching the release of all the balloons was genuinely jaw dropping for me. Almost looks like CGI.

Question about replacements for gendered terms: I was telling someone about this super cool older couple in our neighborhood who live in a house passed down from the husband’s grandfather.
Many of us consider them one of the matriarchs and patriarchs of the neighborhood. For years I only knew the husband by his nickname (chosen name! 😱) of Duke.
Matriarch, patriarch. Is there a consensus on replacing/upgrading/simplifying those?

Speaking of #ElonMusk going full mask off, he’s been telling us it was a mask for years.
He posted antisemitic memes before buying Twitter. He un-banned white supremacists like Nick Fuentes and David Duke. *Thousands* of former black employees at #Tesla sued him for racist practices. His entire family wealth came from apartheid South Africa. He spouted racist race theory on Joe Rogan.
If people finally came around after the salute, well.. good I guess. But he broadcasted it for decades.

Can’t argue with data. The #Tesla Nazitruck is the most explosive car ever mistakenly allowed on the road.

@nprofile…g4hh I *believe* the phone never attempts to talk to a satellite unless you truly get out of range of any local cell towers, even ones off network. We might need some #infosec folks to confirm that.
There are some options in Settings > Emergency SOS (near the bottom), but none of them completely disable the feature. They only disable the extra triggers available to initiate a call when you are in various forms of distress (like hold the side + volume button to initiate a satellite call).

I searched #DreamHost’s help section for “Ghost”
I want to try dabbling with it (https://ghost.org) since I already have my own web hosting.
Of course, the Knowledge Base section displays some ding dong #AI assistant that “analyzes my query” for a sec
Then the one help doc it returns is: “Gaining access to accounts of the deceased”
😆

Hey #Mastodon and #Fediverse folks: Is there any way to use a single account for all these different services?
I know the main #PixelFed instance has a ‘sign in with Mastodon’ option but you still need to create an account with a unique user ID. Seems like just a login convenience thing instead of a centralized ID system.
Is that in the works at all?

Someone claiming to be a former #Twitter employee on an H1B visa alleges #ElonMusk used Twitter, its AI systems, vast sets of bots, and rampant rule-breaking to interfere with the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

A ton of #Reddit communities are banning links from #Twitter. Some going as far as also banning tweet screenshots and even Facebook posts. It’s something
Some headlines claim it’s hundreds of communities. That would be nice. Apparently Reddit stated it will not interfere

We’ve had actions and evidence for years, but at least now we have visual confirmation:
If you are still on #Twitter, you are on a Nazi site. You support a Nazi site. Full stop
It is no different than the Nazi bar example. Except now the Nazi didn’t just walk into the bar and is allowed to stay, the Nazi *owns the bar*
Leave the fucking Nazi bar. No, your stupid excuse doesn’t matter

TIL the bill that bans #TikTok has broad language to ban other apps built by “foreign adversaries of the US.” I found this screenshot in a YouTuber subreddit—sounds like #CapCut might be banned too.
Silver lining: #Temu might also get banned 😆

Yo #Mastodon folks: Is it still true that if you switch instances, there’s no way to bring your actual post history along?
Yes, I can see the major vector for abuse there. But is this something that has been solved at all, or is it in active development?
I’ve been answering questions in r/Mastodon and double checking my facts. #fediverse

I’m really kinda psyched Ghost is adding #ActivityPub into the core of its publishing service. I’ve been thinking about swapping one or both of my sites to Ghost for a while (before the WP drama). Think I even kickstarted it way back when. This is a nice nudge.
Hrm. #GhostOrg

I'm interested in #fediverse alternatives to #Reddit
AFAICT, kbin stalled into oblivion. Is #Lemmy the only game in town that got any traction?
IIRC, there was a strange controversy with the Lemmy's core developers supporting some sus stuff. Are there any large Lemmy servers that are, y'know, good with moderation and such?
I'm open to other non-Lemmy options too.
