#PennedPossibilities 1162: "If your MC or SC were to carve a Jack-o’-lantern, what would it look like?"
Well ... It's not a tradition where they live, but if it were, the mouth would definitely have to be big enough for a tiny dragon to get in, for otherwise, where's the fun in having a carved pumpkin?

#ScribesAndMakers 10/4: "Do you include details in your work that are important to you even though no one else will likely notice?"
Yes, and if a reader does notice them, I'll be delighted.
For example, there is a very minor recurring antagonist called Ortnit. He simply couldn't have any other name, because, during his first appearance, he is bitten by a (tiny) dragon.

2026-09-30 13:18:17 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/30: "What stereotypes do your MCs deal with in their world?"
While the MCs don't have to deal with some of the stereotypes of our world (for example, gender stereotypes would baffle them quite a bit), there are some prejudices against both steppe riders and the Norse (violent pagans who are up to no good, all of them!), and Wulfila is constantly up against the assumption that a person won't simply stop being a thief - criminals always stay criminals, that much is certain.

#ScribesAndMakers 9/25: "Our next featured creator uses a separate Fedi account dedicated to their book. Do you use different accounts for different creative purposes?"
No. There is only this one account. While I know that some other people like to keep different parts of their creativity separate (through using various pen names etc.), that wouldn't work for me.

2026-09-25 06:50:37 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/25: "Do illicit drugs or alcohol play a role in your story?"
Alcohol is mentioned and/or consumed by characters now and then, but does not play a major role. As for "illicit drugs", I don't believe Austrasian legislation contains anything comparable to modern drug laws. However, there is one instance of a questionable painkiller (we never learn what exactly it contains) and an ample amount of strong wine consumed in combination leading to an ... interesting result.

2026-09-24 12:38:04 UTC

#WritersCoffeeClub 9/24: "Do you write primarily for yourself or for a reader?"
I write the kind of stories I would like to read, and of course, I am happy whenever other people seem to enjoy reading them, but I rarely write with a specific reader in mind, the exception being "Der Torfschuppenmord" (the title translates to "The Peat Shed Murder"). That was written for my mother, because she likes murder mysteries, and her favourite characters among my usual cast got to play important roles.

2026-09-23 10:50:46 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/23: "Have your characters' journeys affected your own life? If so, how?"
My characters are good companions. I've been with them for over 20 years by now (in regard to writing about them; I started publishing their stories later than that), and I think I've said before that I would like for them to grow old with me. So they certainly make my life richer and happier than it might be if they weren't there.

2026-09-20 12:02:20 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 9/20: "Repossess?"
Well, technically, a precious, very old fibula and a horse are sort-of-repossessed by proxy in one of my stories ... A swordfight is involved.

2026-09-20 11:58:13 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/18: "What are three personality strengths your MC has?"
The one all three MCs share is probably kindness - they aren't particularly wicked people.

2026-09-16 12:17:42 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 9/16: "Create a poll listing 2-3 objects that have featured in your work and one that hasn't. Ask people to pick the one that hasn't."
All right, this will be easy:

2026-09-15 15:24:29 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 9/15: "What's a situation where you feel a ';' definitely works better than a '.' ?"
A semicolon is good for tying together thoughts and observations that are neither fully separate nor interwoven completely. Here's a semicolon in a character description in my latest book:
"Goat-Olaf had been quite young when he had set out for the east with grand plans; now, however, he was well past his sixtieth year and half-bald, but other than that, he had changed surprisingly little."

2026-09-15 13:05:10 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/15: "Your characters get one completely ordinary day with no villains, quests, murders, wars, prophecies, romantic disasters, or impending apocalypses. How do they spend it?"
Given that my stories are somewhat slice-of-life, that would not even be unusual. If a day without "villains" means no crime is brought to the High Court's attention, it will likely be a day of catching up on the more boring sort of deskwork for Herrad and Wulfila, and the usual guard duties for Ardeija.

2026-09-14 12:24:10 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/14: "Your MC is offered exactly what they've always wanted - but accepting it will cost them something they love. What do they choose?"
Given that one of the recurring themes in my stories is that you rarely get exactly what you want in life, but that there are good things nonetheless, they wouldn't take the offer. In fact, Wulfila didn't take it in "Tricontium" (if he had accepted it, he would be Lord Asgrim's swordmaster now - which is the sort of post he always wanted).

2026-09-14 05:29:05 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 9/14: "What's your favorite type of story setting?"
I'm fine with many kinds of setting, but a well-researched (!) medieval or medievally-inspired setting always feels a bit like coming home.

2026-09-13 12:37:21 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 9/13: "How pedantic are you?"
In what respect, exactly? In writing (both fantasy and academic) and in translating, I try to get the details right, of course, but if we are talking about, say, cooking, I am entirely capable of deciding that this dish will still work somehow if I don't have the exact amount of ingredient XY required by the recipe at hand.

2026-09-13 12:19:26 UTC

2026-09-09 10:03:13 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/9: "What secret would cause the most damage if it were revealed in your story right now?"
As in, damage *inside* the story world, or damage to the narrative as such? If it is the latter, revealing too early how a certain statement the antagonist made was actually meant (it can easily be misunderstood) might make the story less exciting. As for damage within the story world, Gorm is probably worried right now that he will be in great trouble if what he has been hiding comes out.

Oh, don't worry. Ivar would be delighted to meet you (the bit of piracy you engage in doesn't disturb him all that much, given his background, as long as you continue to keep your activities outside the jurisdiction of the High Court of Castra Nova), and there would be a friendly conversation about the cats in your lives, and various and sundry things, but certainly no interrogation. 😊

2026-09-08 14:51:01 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/8: "Which character would be the worst person to get trapped in an elevator with?"
If there were elevators in the world of my story, the worst person might arguably be Ivar - chances are *he* caused that elevator to get stuck, in order to have a quiet word with you, entirely undisturbed, and, no, you shouldn't try anything funny right now, because the first person you'll meet once the elevator gets unstuck is his brother outside, with a battle axe in hand. Now, where was he ...?

2026-09-07 09:04:18 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/7: "Describe a moment when one of your characters realizes they’ve made a terrible mistake."
There is one very early in "Tricontium". Ardeija is angry to find himself in a dungeon cell with some branded lowlife. It takes him a while to realize that the thief he has been thinking less than charitable thoughts about is actually his old friend Wulfila (someone very dear to him he lost track of due to a civil war years ago), and when he does, he is less than impressed with himself.

2026-09-06 09:23:30 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/6: "What is your MC hilariously bad at?"
Well, Gjuki, the little dragon, would tell you that all three of them are terribly bad at smelling the truly important things (such as whether someone is happy or sad, or which aquaintance is about to come around the next corner). That can be quite funny at times, but ... it may be due to the fact that they are humans? So one had probably better not laugh at them in such situations, that would be mean.

2026-09-05 08:12:44 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/5: "If your antagonist could justify their actions in one sentence, what would they say?"
Actually, he needs more than one sentence when he does try to justify his actions late in the story. But it boils down to "I meant well."

2026-09-04 11:29:58 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/4: "What seemingly insignificant object in your story carries a lot of emotional weight?"
I am not certain if any such object is mentioned in my current project, but in my last book, "Oktoberperlen", there is a very important pair of boots that means the world to someone, for particular reasons. 🥾🥾

2026-09-04 06:40:29 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 9/4: "If ebooks stopped being produced, how much would you miss them?"
As I prefer reading print books, I would not miss e-books as such terribly. But some authors whose works I enjoy reading only make their stories available as e-books, and if they did not make the switch to print then, I would miss them. And it would be really unfortunate if old books (say, 19th century editions of medieval texts) that are currently easily available as PDF files weren't there any more.

2026-09-03 08:26:15 UTC

#PhantastikPrompts 3.9.: "Zeichne deinen Spannungsbogen. Oder bau ihn aus Gegenständen und mach ein Foto davon."
Ich fürchte, ich habe mich der Aufgabe nicht mit dem nötigen Ernst gestellt, aber insgeheim finde ich wirklich so ein bisschen, dass ein guter Spannungsbogen einem Fragezeichen gleichen sollte. 😉

2026-09-02 15:45:24 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/2: "What would your MC notice first upon entering a crowded room?"
Herrad is not bad at scanning for additional exits apart from the one she just came in through (in case she needs to make a hasty retreat or, alternatively, keep someone from running *from* her). Other than that, all depends on the sort of crowd this is (the local church on a holiday is different from the "Fat Eel" on a busy evening and on the brink of a tavern brawl breaking out).

2026-09-02 15:28:19 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers 9/2: "How do you think where you live affects your creative work?"
Weather, plants, and wildlife mentioned in my stories are very much influenced by what is common here - there's often a robin somewhere, for example - or might have been common in earlier centuries (the bear that appears in one book would be unlikely to turn up here nowadays).
In case the question is meant differently, I'm happy enough here, so, no ill effects, except for the occasional noisy neighbour.

2026-09-02 09:35:36 UTC

2026-09-01 09:03:02 UTC

#WordWeavers 9/1: "What is something your MC desperately wants but would never admit to wanting?"

#WordWeavers 8/31: "What's one thing you hope readers remember long after they finish your story?"

"Share something that you wrote (and love) with everyone."
I still like the moment that introduces both Gjuki 🐉 and Wulfila to the reader in "Tricontium" (even though Ardeija, whose perspective we follow here, is not impressed at all for now).

#WritersCoffeeClub 6/4: "In what ways do your real-world surroundings appear in your work?"
The antagonist's castle in "Tricontium" is somewhat based on the hillfort-like medieval earthworks on a hill near where I live, and the fibula below that plays a role in one of my stories is heavily inspired by one that is the showpiece of the local archaeological museum (the Tangendorf disc brooch). No, in the story, it is never explained how those Vikings got their hands on that precious antique piece!

#PennedPossibilities⁩ 1023: "Who would you personally trust the most out of your cast of characters?"
Wulfila, hands down. Yes, he stole the occasional chicken in the past and will still pilfer a handful of cherries when given half a chance, no, you need not distrust him one bit when it comes to truly important matters. Ironically, he is far more of a good guy than certain very respectable people, and he can be trusted to make you tea when you truly need it, too.

#WritersCoffeeClub 5/20: "If not your current genre, what genre would you write?"
Long, long ago, I tried to write historical novels, but as I'm a stickler when it comes to research for those, it tended to bug me to no end that some things were just impossible to find out. That and the fact that I didn't get to have any dragons there were important reasons for moving on to fantasy in the end.
