Though I can't imagine any interpretation is *good*. No matter how hermeneutically generous.

I bought myself two kiwi fruit; I'm out today doing some work. I get a message from daughter "can I eat one of the kiwis?"
An hour later.
"Can I eat the other one?"
*sigh* yes my child, you may eat my kiwis. I shall get some more. 😆 I can't deny my kid fresh fruit.

I'm gearing up to make more pickled red cabbage. This last batch as met wit universal acclaim, even from some folks who hate pickles!
So I will share the recipe here:
Juice was 1/3 pickling salt brine, 1/3 regular vinegar, 1/3 water. A small amount of balsamic to taste.
Vegetables were: A whole head of red cabbage cut medium fine. 2 large jalapenos seeded and quartered. Garlic.
Spice was simple; 4 bay leaves. I didn't use coriander for this one.

Apart from rolling a critical fail in PR, the position Tori Noble takes is a gamble that expanded rights for fair use would be generally useful to everyone constructing and using AI tools.
Framing the issue as an expansion of copyright restrictions denies the contrary expansion of rights to AI model creators. This is new territory and this whole time period is clearly an unregulated land grab by everyone.
Typically for libertarians though; she mistakes...

There was a sense in the Inkscape project that it should be the developer team that decided what the AI policy should be.
I flatty rejected this.
Because most of the consequences for the project, for our users and for the world have absolutely nothing to do with developing software. It's reputation, risk, relationships and community standards and morality.
The last thing I wanted was important decisions to be pre-narrowed to questions of technical usefulness.

This reminds me so much of the transition that painting went through after the invention of photography. It went... wild. Mostly moving away from representation. Pre-Raphaelite notwithstanding.
I already see street art and creativity from teens becoming less refined in response to AI art.
Interesting times.

"I know you're not supposed to talk about how much you make"
This anti-labour propaganda creates "information asymmetry" where your boss knows how much everyone is making and you do not.
ALWAYS talk about how much you are earning. How many days off you get. How many millions of views you need to make a living. Every single coffee break, every single video. Never stop sharing information with your peers.

Another rejection from a local artist event to run a workshop. Not a single art collective, zine fest, comic artist palooza is interested in having an expert come and give instruction on tools like Inkscape. For Free.
I despair, I really do, as a volunteer I feel utterly disrespected. All I seem to get is people assuming I'm some corpo bastard as they have no clue what Free Software is and why people volunteer to try and help their fellow humans.
Coffee, black.

2026-08-10 01:25:13 UTC

We fight injustice and we friend society; thus I believe Inkscape is also a social warrior project.
I mean why even bother turning up to do this much free labour if it wasn't *for* something important?
Why want for change if that change isn't any better for the people in your society? Or the world? Or yourself even?
Libertarians give me gas.

My emergency appendix surgery, CT scans and hospital stay cost me $360. This is extremely cheap for the USA. As a brit I'm both annoyed at having to pay anything at all and appalled by the thought that anyone else would have to pay (looks at insurance cover) 🤯 $6,320.... that I presume is a negotiated price too.
All's well that ends well I suppose.

If I were designing this for inkscape, I would take models (with consent) produce images of those models against backgrounded images in blender (made slightly out of focus) and generate a tight 2d bbox from the blender plane and format it as svg beziers. With thousands of such generated images I would then make a model using the same techniques as we have both seen to make auto background removal by adding an svg clipping path generated by the model
But I don't have time for that!

There are ways. See the open source green and blue screen removal for video. Developed with generated data, complete ethically, data was open released also.
I see no reason why this approach couldn't be used to make something. Even for vectors, with enough time to develop it.

I'm thinking no, because the calculation for bbox is done on the layer contents.
Though since layers do not provide actual size (like pages do) the argument for layer x page makes sense.

Your health insurance premium is tax
Your car repayments is tax
Your data center electricity surcharge is tax
You voted for them to reduce your taxes but all they did was privatise taxes and call them by other names. You pay more now then you ever would under any public system.
A vote for tax reduction is a vote for hidden taxes.

I'm going to sleep. If anyone is wondering why the #inkscape website is down, it's because it's being crushed by AI bots again, so I've taken it offline.
I tried to put in more ip-blocks, and then tried to install Anubis. But I'm not a sysadmin and so this is just taking time to do. Can't do much of it tonight (this morning) so I'm afraid it's staying offline.

This much improved simplify nodes feature in #inkscape is waiting for UX design, but no one has been available to help with that work in two months. I don't want to loose the work.
Interested?
I think it would be fairly easy to do. Just decide if it should be it's own button, a popover, or something else. And make an icon if the design needs one.

Every time I see Elon getting a NASDAQ back scratch, or some head scratching warehouse deal with Amazon, or a bonkers contract with Fujitsu, IBM, or one of the many IT nutters.... remember it's got nothing to do with if they're good, cheap or whatever.

After moving from #launchpad and #bzr, we don't have the energy to move the project again. So it looks like we'll be putting up with whatever GitLab decides to do to us.

Reputation is one of the most valuable things any social project has. It can inspire people to do great things together.
Money is, *waves hand*, helpful; but just a thing. It's not valuable in itself, only in what things it can be transacted to get people to do for you.
If you trade inspiration for transactional power, then you no longer need to lead people, just money.
And money just isn't as valuable as people.

I have an unfinished bit of work that allowed you to only show the selected layer (and it's parents), would this functionality have helped your inkslide workflows here?

Too few people really think about the continuum between gravy, stew and soup. To really ponder, when you get right down to it in life: is the liquid or the solid bits more important in this meal?

I don't know many protest movements that have tried. Most people are media credulous and gentle and not versed in just how far you have to be willing to go.
As for non-western actions. It depends on the economy. States with highly concentrated and separable resources that don't depend on their people (oil), tend to just go all out on violent suppression. Countries who's wealth comes from it's people destroy their wealth when they do that.
It has not been a hundred years of failures.

I admit that between the hyper competence of @nprofile…x3x0 5.0 the incredible attention to detail of cmyk in @nprofile…qh6f and *maybe* competing with Affinity on linux has all made my work this year feel like it's taking a hundred times longer than it should
I feel like if I was in Europe I'd be building an Inkscape non-profit with staff and be *involved* in the Free Software community instead of on it's edges where Free Software *used* to be here in the USA.
Oh well, we do the work that's in front of us.

Even in my argument I wouldn't paywall users. Pay when you can, if you ever can.
But that doesn't mean it should be made hard, ancillary, a side quest, when it's very important aspect to the whole system.

2025-12-17 18:49:25 UTC

"Any Free Software that distributes other Free Software where it is significantly easier to access the software than it is to pay for that software is by this definition anti-Free Software-sustainability."
This means Gnome, Flatpak, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch btw, F-Droid and EVERY distro or technology in Free Desktop is Anti-Free Software.
This isn't an accusation. This is a systemic problem. With a lack of thought given to how users pay for their Free Software.

Heh, Just Justify your Justification Justiculation!
Personally I prefer justified text as the gaps provide a good pattern reference for my dyslexia which will re-read the same line sometimes by mistake. It's harder to do that when the line looks different each time.

Me: you know, Franken as in French and stein as in German. Literally a Stein that has been Franked. A German that has been Frenched.
Ok it was funnier in my head. 😅

Oh good god the AI trap on the inkscape website has twelve million hits. That's the hidden url that bots are told not to index, but ai bots LOVE to hit that thing.
But attacks continue to increase.
I'm going to have to decide if I need to block t-mobile and other mobile carriers because of all the malware on android phones being used as ai bot sources.

Inkscape 1.4 image *input* support is Gdk Pixbuf's support (this has it's own problems) but I just opened a webp no problem because my Gtk build has webp support. Copy and paste worked too. (PopOS 24.04)
Output of webp is supported by the raster extension "raster_output_webp" it's converting the png to webp for you.

I think that last bit is where I disagree the most. The GPL is a social and political tool rendering industry regulation by hacking contract and copyright legal frameworks.
The reason why you don't want Microsoft to have a free pass to your code is because their size, and political reach renders your economics moot. In short, they will take from you and then crush you with political and legal corruption and market manipulation.

Hmm. Looks like I need to go to New York City on Nov 1st/2nd to fix my nephew's Linux computer. Damn you #Fedora 42 and your headphone jack issues! 😆
I don't suppose anyone would like to hang out, meet up or else? It would be nice to do something else while I'm there and my daughter just gave me the hell no. She's at that teen age of not wanting to do things with her dear ol' parent.

Hey, do you know CMake? Can you spare a couple of minutes to do a code review? The Inkscape project sometimes struggles to find experts in some tools to do reviews and you could be a great help just looking over this include construct for unit tests (we're trying to do more unit testing)

Q: Is this ok to include a CMakeLists when putting together a list of cpp files for the unit test builder?

I think there is a Dunning–Kruger like effect whereby the complexity of rewriting an open source project from scratch is vastly underestimated the less you know about the scope of the work.
You could make 80% of #inkscape in a couple of months of javascripting. But this is 80% of Inkscape's surface. Not actual depth.
Rewrite it all in #Qt? #React? #JS? #Rust? These are ideas aren't bad. But they are vast projects that would cost millions of dollars.

I've had to re-read even this clarification a few times. It seems to suggest the opposite.
To me it's unclear since policy is already devolved to servers and the unkind reading is that a server here means the *server software*. Which is still policy, it's just the opposite policy of "devolved to the server" (human).
I look forward to your next iteration on this point as it is at least *interesting*

Ugh, I was mostly on side but then it went all libertarian techbro-privilege on the topic of creating net-neutrality by systematically forbidding server moderation. As seductive as mechanisms of fair-play replacing human relationships is; Just No.
That and the contrived centrism he's offering bsky. The bad false equivalence to ActivityPub is a real tow curler.
What a duff ending to an otherwise good talk.
