I don't know many protest movements that have tried. Most people are media credulous and gentle and not versed in just how far you have to be willing to go.
As for non-western actions. It depends on the economy. States with highly concentrated and separable resources that don't depend on their people (oil), tend to just go all out on violent suppression. Countries who's wealth comes from it's people destroy their wealth when they do that.
It has not been a hundred years of failures.
