Something to keep in mind: when your nations enemies decide to try a knockout strike before they attack you, all those mega-project data centres they want to build next to your community will be prime targets. 🤷‍♂️

I hear the term “regime change” tossed about with dismaying ease, as if it’s as simple as changing the sheets or something. So, for the sake of all operating in the same reality:
1. “Regime change” is an act of war and a violation of long-standing international law FOR GOOD REASON.
2. This hasn’t stopped the US (and other major powers) over the the last 70 years
3. The track record of “regime change” is abysmal, leading almost inevitably to more human suffering, and less stability in the long term
4. The current (terrible) regime in Iran is a *direct result* of previous “regime change” meddling

My guts suspect there *may* be a 2015 Alberta style collapse coming up for the CPC, but the prospect frightens me as much as anything, because here it was followed to a panicked resurgence, and a retrenched hardening of support around a clearly fascist pole.

I think we’ll see a bump up in the steady flight away from the CPC by small c conservatives, either through defections or (as Jeneroux had planned) through ‘retirements’.
First: they have a destination to go to as Carney reworks the LPC into a more explicitly neoliberal party economically.
Second: PP has proved his grip on the party to be impervious to assault, the takeover by ideology and personality cult is pretty strong. Anyone thinking they would weather this swing to the alt-right as a temporary or reversible thing has surely been disabused of the notion by watching PP lose the election, lose his seat, and then be re-coronated by the party. The ease with which they finagled a supporters-only, keep out the naysayers, money-men and true-believers convention is a demonstration of the hold PP et al have on the party that would make anyone with a different vision despair of ever accomplishing anything from within in the next decade.

Almost… but not quite: there’s an extra 1 and a quarter(ish) days. Most plans for a “permanent calendar” include collecting those until there’s a full week so that every 7 years or so you get an extra week ‘out of regular time’ tacked on to the end of the year … sounds pretty good to me, honestly.
It sure is inconvenient that the year isn’t a whole number of days.
By the time our friend Gregory did his thing the calendar was off by 2 weeks, so they had to just skip a fortnight, and then since the Brits refused to join the change there was a while when it was two weeks later on the British Isles than on the continent.

“Austerity measures” - especially the kind of easy-but-thoughtless across-the-board percentage cuts loved by corporate CEOs and Canada’s PM (is there a difference?) - *always* make things worse.
This is *not* how to build a great, thriving, healthy, supported, and inclusive national community.

@nprofile…3jwj This brings to mind a conversation I had at work once as the people standing around included a student in shorts on a -25C day and a recently arrived professor from Brazil experiencing his first winter here. He (the Brazilian) said he was feeling really confused by winter, because even though it was really cold he wasn’t experiencing it. He moved from heated house to heated car to heated office, wearing heavily insulated clothing and boots, always enveloped in an artificial cocoon of mild warmth … unlike in Brazil where a 5C winter day meant waking up in a cold, unheated room, shower, dress in single digit cold, travel in cold unheated transit, and work all day in unheated spaces. Said he felt much more connected to the experience of winter in Brazil than he did in Edmonton: perhaps that’s what the shorts wearers are subconsciously looking for? 🤷‍♂️

When the public purse pours money into subsidizing export markets, who reaps the rewards? Do Canadians get cheap energy? no. This benefits foreign buyers, benefits foreign owned resource companies, sets back energy transition by a decade, and ultimately when the markets shift, Canadians will be left holding the debt.

I encourage every Albertan (and Canadian really) to listen to what UCP MLAs have to say about the notwithstanding clause, it boils down to something very simple:
We support the Canadian Constitution, and that includes the notwithstanding clause, because we believe those rights were never actually meant to be for everybody. We’ll be the judge of who gets rights and who doesn’t.
Their position really is that simple: rights aren’t for everyone.
And that’s why *every* Albertan - every Canadian - should be working to get these people and their ideological cousins (in Ottawa and elsewhere) out of office and as far from any influence in society as possible as quickly as possible.

I know a young person experiencing and learning to adapt to life with POTS
They are exploring mobility aids, but have very limited resources, so I’m looking for advice on rollators vs wheelchair for function, utility, flexibility, comfort, and because cost. In general they experience symptoms on the milder side of things; vertical and functional through most school days and activities, doing well for several weeks at a stretch then experiencing periods where worsening symptoms prevent them from keeping up. Activities out of the house include high school, drama, choir, public transit (including a walking ‘last mile’ at times) and craft/maker fairs. Location Edmonton, so winter climate a consideration.
Advice and comments from experience and boosts/tags welcome, I know there are many of you out there.

Alberta has just veered off the cliff into full-on authoritarianism, stripping workers of fundamental rights, it is an inflection point for our country, but it isn’t sudden… this is the dark heart of the “new conservative” movement.
This movement is absolutely at its core a supremacist movement, one that supports “rights for me but not for thee”.
As the waves of labour action ripple out beyond Alberta teachers and past the boundaries of the province, you will be told this isn’t your fight, it’s a local matter; sit down and shut up.
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a beautiful expression of one vision of what Canada can and should be, and they simply don’t want that vision.
This is a national issue and there are no neat legal solutions to this that can be done by others: instead changing this path for Canada will require people in the streets at numbers we haven’t seen in generations.

The Alberta #UCP has just blown up a century of labour action and worker’s rights hard won against coercive and exploitative employers. They - the employer - have just unilaterally imposed a contract on teachers in clear contravention of their constitutional and Charter rights, and have invoked the “notwithstanding” clause to shield themselves from legal consequences.
A summary of the act:
Here are the 20 key takeaways from Alberta’s 2025 Back to School Act (Bill 2) — the highlights that matter most for understanding what this law does:
    • Ends the Alberta teachers’ strike that began Oct 6, 2025, and the lockout by TEBA that began Oct 9, 2025.
    • Forces all teachers back to work immediately — strike must end at once.
    • Forces TEBA and school boards to end any lockout immediately.

A reminder for newcomers, since I hear there’s a bunch of you:
A “like” (star) sends a message to the posters that says “hey, I liked what you did/said/shared there, I glad I read/saw it” Which is very nice and appreciated, but that’s all it does, there’s no software that bootstraps that into into other people’s feeds.
A boost puts the post in front of the people who follow you (excepting all the ways it can be filtered and any people who have elected not to see boosts). Boosting is important - *you* are the ‘algorithm’, your boosts to share what you like and matters to you are how things get around here.
Without boosting from follow network to follow network, that fabulous post you liked sits within the OPs followers. Sometimes that’s exactly right and sometimes it deserves to be shared widely and fly free.
And yes, you are responsible for what you put into other’s feeds, they *will* follow or unfollow, or filter, or block, or… based on your decisions. That’s life.

In the interest of being informed, & particularly because I personally know people who somehow think Trump is pretty awesome, I tried to read the whole thing… I really did. I got about halfway through this account of the speech and just couldn’t do it anymore… my brain feels scrambled reading his words.
Much of it is simply incoherent self-glorifying gobbledygook, reading it feels like having my brain slowly pressed through a thousand layers of cheesecloth until it’s all been captured in the matrix: atomized, with nothing left to come through the other side.
Then there are the few moments when his words are coherent, when he says something that makes sense, and that sense is terrifying. The enemy within, the plans to use the army, all reads straight from the kind of rhetoric that leads to civil war and genocide and world altering conflicts.
I feel like saying that everyone should read this so they’ll *know*, but most of you already know and I don’t wish this pain on you.

Hey #yeg folk… anyone looking for a tent trailer? We are downsizing our vehicles (and don’t camp so much anymore as our kids become adults). Got a few issues (fridge doesn’t work - we use a little bar fridge on shore power)
Great sleeping trailer, comfy, dry, off the ground. More details and photos below.

Exactly. Giving the benefit of the doubt by using their framing does worse than no good. Deportations are a process governed by law, and these actions aren’t. Granted, lawful deportations, and imprisonments, and killings can also be evil abominations, but in this case the regime is clearly declaring themselves beyond law altogether.

Hurray for all our trans siblings who are able to be out, proud, happy, and successful!
In Alberta, where an actively anti-trans government stokes anti-trans hate, being openly trans is a challenge, especially for young people under the ‘care’ of antagonistic parents and authorities.
Boosting a plea for a 17 yr old, precariously housed, trans youth trying to get on their feet while fighting those systems…

We’ve been looking at hybrids and electrics lately and find it super frustrating that they are all variations on premium models… I’m a simple guy and don’t want all those ‘features’ … as in I literally and actively do not want to drive a car with them … I just want an inexpensive, point A to B box. Frustrated by the tyranny of the markets.

“If they’re fascists and Nazis, where are the concentration camps?”
If prison camps in El Salvador and Guantanamo are too far away or foreign, here’s the first one to catch my attention on US soil… Krome Detention Facility just outside Miami. Admittedly done in typical slapdash careless American style rather than with ruthless German efficiency, but a concentration camp nonetheless.

There’s a term younger generations should acquaint themselves with: Quisling. He was a real man who sold out his country to the OG Nazis.
Danielle Smith is a quisling.

So the GovCanada sends a new $200 Canada Disability Benefit to disabled Albertans, and inresponse the GovAlberta declares it non-exempt income and will reduce AISH payments, leaving total incomes exactly where they were and saving the province $49M off the backs of disabled Albertans.

The worst case scenario for a Canadian trying to enter the US used to be that you could be denied entry, and have to go home, travel plans in ruins.
The worst case scenario now is to be arrested without charge, held in an ICE detention facility in chains, and then shipped off to a concentration camp in El Salvador.
Should make you think twice.

Yes, I think Smith strong separatist sympathies…
“Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi said Smith's threat of a national unity crisis is "childish" and "juvenile" and will fail to get any concessions from the federal government.
He said if the premier wants to keep threatening a national unity crisis, she should call a referendum on Alberta separation and resign if it fails.”

Bob MacDonald (Quirks and Quarks, CBC Radio) has a very accessible episode that covers a lot of the basic information about Covid-19 and long-Covid that most people are woefully unaware of, in an interesting and non-confrontational way. Worth listening to and reading; worth sharing with people who are important to you.

Just today on the radio, the interviewer was pressing the idea that supply management (in dairy) makes products more expensive overall… we need to do a very good job of reminding people that supply management is like having insurance: sure it might cost more *sometimes*, but the return on the investment is better quality, stability, and resilience to weather shocks and upsets.

We know and have been helping a trans youth experiencing insecure housing and working hard to stay in school. Since leaving an unsustainable home situation last July they have been homeless and couch-surfing, all while continuing high school studies and maintaining excellent grades.

I have observed this in others, with huge impacts for people professionally and personally and it really isn’t talked about… how many relationships have been cratered because no one even considered the possibility that this shift in emotional baseline was viral in origin?

Who is surprised that it’s Ford who played into Trump’s hand, played his game, and then blinked first? Not I. Who needs enemies with someone like Ford on our side?
Of course here in Alberta we’ve got Smith, who’s off to share a podium with Shapiro 🙄

My father left the US at the tail end of the 60s, not willing to practice medicine in the system then. Canada gained a doctor who spent the next 40 years working in public health on behalf people in Toronto, encouraging vaccination, fighting smoking and tobacco companies, and much more. A few thousand more physicians from a new generation ready to serve Canadians would be nothing but good for us.

We also need to be real about the USA… yes, they have the world’s largest national gdp, but Europe’s G20 members are more together, and that doesn’t include Canada, Mexico, Japan and a whole host of other allies.
And a war of aggression somewhere in the global north would be the surest way to start a real civil war in the US.
Time for the rest of us to stand up, push Trump to the side, and take the lead in international affairs.

It’s this attitude - everyone is biased, nothing is truly objective, so we don’t need to try - that is at the heart of the rejection of reality in the radical right. Because correcting for bias is work, it’s hard to be objective, and it’s often very uncomfortable to see the world and our place in it as it truly is.
That it’s so tempting and comforting to dive into our bias cocoons is precisely why it matters to do the hard work.

Indeed… Poilievre was “in the room where it happened” for every step in Harper’s government. Harper 2.0 will be just like OG Harper but amped up with the supremacist rage politics built up over the last decade.
To anyone not old enough to remember what Harper did: start learning your history… the roots of so many of today’s problems (the ones PP makes empty cute slogans about) were started or accelerated under Harper.

A word about the brewing trade war between Canada and the US:
Yes, Canada will be hit harder proportionally - about twice as hard as the US. But in absolute terms the US will be hit harder than Canada: for every dollar lost off the Canadian GDP, the US will lose 6 (go ahead, do the math)
When / if Trump shoots his own nation in the foot, that foot is going to start screaming and will be our best allies from within.

Never thought I’d find myself agreeing with Ford, but as another crook and bully he’s got Trump’s number… the way to deal with the bully is to hit back exactly where it hurts them most … “HUUGE” export duties or outright bans on the very products the US needs most. Set a precedent that says, “We’re nice, but won’t be pushed around, so it’s better to stay on our nice side.”

Today’ headline: “Boosting border security no longer enough”
Of course not: The first batch of threats had our leaders tripping over each other comply in advance, why wouldn’t he see how much more he can get? It won’t end until Canada shows we will cut the US out of a lot of valuable things it can’t get elsewhere.

Fair advance warning for the election season ahead in Canada: don’t you dare tell me you’ll support the Conservatives “because the economy”
… Conservatives consistently have the worst track record for economic performance, and the growth they do create is more unevenly distributed.
If you *are* going to support the CPC at least come up with a believable excuse, like “I want to punch down on the homeless and trans people”
