@npub19ha…q0fa @npub18gp…cg5e What are the bare minimum needed for Live Event like Boost Beach or SXWW that gets broadcast to multiple apps?
1) Current Value Block
2) Title/Song
3) Author/Band
Is anything else needed/wanted for an app that allows liveValue?

These two can answer any questions, but yes, they have hosting. Fountain is also a player, and I believe PodHome is working on a player too.

It's not that we don't like Wavlake, it's that Wavlake's code makes it so the Wavlake player can only play Wavlake music. If Wavlake's player played all RSS based music, I'd probably recommend most people use Wavlake. They give you a wallet and hosting and charge you 10% of your sats. Unless you're making $100 a month on your music, you'd pay less with a 10% cut than you would with a different hosting company charging a monthly fee.
Because they don't play all RSS based music, they go against my values, but if that ever changes, I'll send more people to Wavlake.

Podhome, Fountain if you want hosting.
Music Side Project if you want to host it yourself.

If you're looking for a turn key solution, a company like Wavlake that handles everything is exactly what you want.
Does Wavlake support your values?
Do you mind giving them a 10% cut in exchange for the service they provide?
If Wavlake works for you, use Wavlake, they're a great solution. But if you want more ownership, there's tools to do it yourself.
It's like changing your oil. If you know how to do it, you can choose to do it yourself or pay someone else because it's not worth the hassle. No shade with either decision.

And good luck. The UI/UX of multiple splits is a tough problem to handle elegantly. I'm not sure there's clean way of doing it yet, but we'll get there.

Yeah, Wavlake handled splits on their server instead of your wallet sending multiple payments. It works, and given some of the limitations, it makes sense.

2025-09-30 19:33:39 UTC

Right now there's a discussion if we shift that data over to nostr, or if it gets POSTed to server the podcaster or their host controls. metaBoost is the current proposal I'm most behind. https://github.com/Podcastindex-org/podcast-namespace/discussions/676
My 2 cents, send it to the podcaster's server, and if they want to post it on nostr, they can have a function that takes care of that. But there's a lot going on, like keeping track of how many sats were sent and the time sent that the podcaster is going to want to keep track of for potential tax reasons, so they'll want to store all of that data in their own data base.
Not saying signing a nostr note and sending it via relay isn't viable, but converting the JSON to a flat array, signing the note, etc is part of the discussion of how metadata should be handled.

https://github.com/Podcastindex-org/podcast-namespace/blob/main/docs/examples/value/blip-0010.md
All of this metadata is being sent to the podcaster in the keysend TLV record. It's a lot more than a message.
With keysend being no longer widely supported, as we shift to lnurl, the podcasters would still like this metadata, and we're discussing how best to get it to them in a way that is private if they choose to keep their stats private, or if listening data should even be private.

I looked into that one, and it is a solution no doubt. Requires a lot of user interaction, and I was trying to minimize that. I was hoping I could use Strike OAuth Connect instead of API keys, but that requires a business to get the OAuth Connect API keys for my app. https://docs.strike.me/strike-oauth-connect/

I may. I've been out of coding for a few months. The wallet/metadata debate kind of took the wind out of my sails.
I'm really hoping we start to see more feeds using lnurl, it will make the shift to NWC log in more seamless.

2025-09-30 17:05:34 UTC

- reply

Hmm... this is an interesting idea. You're listening data is tied to your npub, so you could listen to 30 minutes of a podcast in Fountain, then when you get to work, log into CurioCaster from your desktop and pick up right where you left off because your data is stored on a relay tied to your npub. 🤔

2025-09-30 17:03:06 UTC

- reply

If you're focus is nostr, and I know that's where your heart is, the Wavlake api may be a better choice for you because of the way they handle the value block. Because nostr doesn't do splits very well, non-Wavlake feeds may be problematic for you.
However, if you're interested in other non-Wavlake music, the Podcast Index also has an API that lets you fetch all of the music feeds, but the value blocks are considerably more difficult to do using nostr based wallets.
Hopefully, nostr figures out an elegant way to handle splits, because it is really cool being able to have multiple people paid from the listener.

2025-09-30 16:48:30 UTC

- reply

I tried implementing the Strike API, but I'm not a legit business, so they denied my API keys. I hope they implement NWC, but I have a feeling the big players are not going to be interested in interop.

2025-09-30 16:29:23 UTC

- reply

And I don't disagree that we're moving in a direction in which wallets are corporately captured, and most people will be using PayPal, CashApp, Strike, etc. At which point, your livelihood is just as compromised as using YouTube or Spotify. Say the wrong thing, and your wallet is shutdown.
That's one of the reasons why I'm surprised more 'freedom' minded people aren't hosting their own node.

2025-09-30 16:24:17 UTC

- reply

I think NWC is the way forward. We just need to shift towards using lnurl in the RSS feeds instead of keysend. Until that happens, Alby is one of the few wallets that still supports keysend.
In defense of Wavlake, one of the reasons they don't support non-Wavlake albums is because their infrastructure is built more to support nostr, which is lnurl. Once most artists are using lnurl in their feeds, Wavlake will have a much easier time handling payments to those external artists.

2025-09-30 16:15:56 UTC

- reply

This is a wallet issue. Alby provided free wallets. They now provide code to host your own wallet, or paid wallets.
Fountain and Wavlake are using ZBD wallets. I don't know this to be true, but I suspect since both have investors involved, ZBD is one of those investors.
Most of the podcasting 2.0 feeds use keysend in their value block. Keysend isn't supported by most wallets. There's a move away from keysend towards lnurl, which will open up other wallets, but only if they allow NWC.
We're at a point that only companies with the cash flow to provide wallets or the infrastructure to support the wallets are able to do anything besides Alby.

LNBeats was coded by a retard that just wanted something so all RSS based music could be found and listened to. The coder is glad that other retards are taking on the quixotic quest of building more RSS music apps.

2025-09-30 16:00:42 UTC

- reply

The other problem, and this isn't exactly Wavlake's fault, it's an unintended consequence, is there's so much shitty AI music. Because they provide a wallet and 'free' hosting, anyone can easily upload their shitty AI creation and hope to snag a few sats.
There's music show hosts that have quit because it's just too much work weeding through all the AI slop.
Granted, this isn't a Wavlake issue, someone could host their own AI slop on their own server, but that would take considerable more buy in, and the proof of work limits the grifters.

2025-09-30 15:54:01 UTC

- reply

Nothings wrong with Fountain.
What's wrong with Wavlake is they're not an open app. They only show Wavlake music. If they were open to non-Wavlake RSS based music, you'd hear considerably less critique of their business model.
Imagine how nostriches would feel if Damus only showed messages that were sent using Damus? That's Wavlake.

Do you think it might be because the younger generation has a fundamentally different relationship to music that we're not quite understanding?
Most of the people I know involved in the music stuff are older. I'm not sure any are under 30. I'm in my 40s. I remember making mix tapes on cassette. I can hear a song and my mind goes to the next song on the CD automatically because I listened to that CD so many times.
Music wasn't just background noise. It wasn't a song in the background of a TikTok video, or a streaming service playing non-stop music on random. It was an intentional activity, I had to think about the song I wanted to hear, find it the CD in my stack, put it into the player, and hit play. I then got 50 minutes of the listening experience before I had to make a new decision.
It might be possible that we're building tech for a bygone era when people use to care, and they simply don't anymore. They're used to listening to any song they want for $9.99 per month (less than how much I was paying for 1 CD in 2002). Music isn't something special, it's just the background noise to the TikTok video we call life.

This is exactly it. There’s a lot of grifters that talk the talk, but their actions say something different. They say nostr will be the Twitter, Spotify, Instagram, Substack killer, but what they don’t tell you is they don’t hate what those platforms stand for, they hate that they don’t own them.
They see nostr as their chance to finally make a popular platform they control and can get rich off of. If their podcast is hosted on anchor, or their nostr account is a Primal one, that really tells you all you need to know.

2025-05-21 15:44:46 UTC

I know you guys are busy, maybe you didn't realize that RSS now supports zaps, which is just a lightning address and lnurlp. RSS supports lnurlp as well as keysend.
What's actually going on is Wavlake handles payments through a 10% cut. That's not a problem, it's their business model, and it's a legitimate one. Other hosts charge a monthly fee, Wavlake charges 10%. However, in order to accomplish this, they control your wallet. The sats are sent to Wavlake's node, then sent to the musicians account on Wavlake's node. This is also how Wavlake originally handled splits. In fact, I suspect the way it works for non-Wavlake splits is there's a function to forward the sats to the split using Wavlake's wallet. So when I zap a band, my sats go to Wavlake, then Wavlake will forward those sats to each split.
Podcasting 2.0 chose a different, more transparent route. The splits are in the feed. When you send a Boost, the sats leave your wallet and go straight to the split's wallet, no middle man.
This doesn't work on nostr, because nostr does a poor job of supporting splits. Wavlake taking control of the wallet is the solution, because they need one address to control them all. I get it, it makes a lot of sense with the limitations of nostr.
Wavlake made design choices because they wanted to be a nostr platform, the RSS was extra. I'm not sure why Wavlake chooses not to have outside RSS feeds in their app. I suspect it's because their wallet system isn't set up to handle splits the way every other Podcasting/Music app does. But to put the blame on RSS is disingenuous. You made choices to support nostr first, it creates limitations on you.
I'm not mad at your model, but a lot of us are concerned with building an open system, and we'd like to see the biggest player in the space open it doors and let others play inside. Sometimes, walls don't stop people from going out, they stop people from coming in. I'm pretty sure it's because of the way you decided to structure your wallet system, and RSS use to not support lnurlp, it was keysend only. That has since been changed, RSS does support zaps now.
And speaking of this 50% revenue share, how do I get in on that action? Most of the music shows that support the new musicians are using apps I built. LNBeats plays music from anyone in the Podcast Index, including every Wavlake album. I'm pretty sure I got a few apps that are growing the ecosystem.

Wavlake could do the same thing for music.
Even the apps that claim to be 'doing things different' are just using legacy protocols and tacking on the nostr Twitter feature.

Dude, if you're on Wavlake, you're in the Valueverse™. If you like Wavlake, use Wavlake. They make it easy, and they make all the music on Wavlake available in any podcast player. However, their player only plays Wavlake music, it doesn't allow you to play non-Wavlake music on it, so if someone decided they want to host their music on RSS Blue or self host it, it's available in all the podcast apps, but it's not available on Wavlake. Wavlake is a check valve, their music can go out, but nobody else's music can come in. You decide if that's the sort of ecosystem you want to support.

And it's open source. Contribute, fork it, make it your own. I don't care. I just want you to get your music out there.

Here's a feed I made for my buddy's band. It cost me 5000 sats, and that was a few years ago, so maybe $3. I think I have 10 years of hosting on it from satellite.earth. Check the links to the mp3 and image, you'll see it's all hosted on satellite.earth. If you plan on ever changing the feed, it needs to be at an address where the file contents can change without changing the file name, so a Blossom server may not be the best solution... yet. That's why I hosted the actual RSS on github, for free.
Image, mp3, RSS feed, it's all you need. Super easy.

If you guys do this, turn on a camera and record it. It doesn't have to be anything slick. It shows me how actual users think so I can make the process more intuitive, it gives a tutorial for others to follow, and we're doing it. It's not us waiting for a company to give us the tools to take back control of our creativity, it's us coming together and doing it ourselves. v4v isn't about the money, it's about the community. Building our own shit together is way more valuable, let's never forget that.

It's definitely a desktop app. https://image.nostr.build/baa3273dbc334c2423d219762d0f5969632bbf3b820fedce0794ed2e847a6220.png

Hell yeah, decentralized tutorial videos, TTT style. I didn't ask for it, one of the members of the community saw a need and filled it. That's the time and talent part of the Time, Talent, Treasure model.

You already have it. Host your own damn mp3s and RSS file on your own site. Here's a tool, that's 100% v4v, meaning you get to choose the split, all the way down to 0%. It builds the RSS for you. All you have to do is paste the links to your artwork and mp3 files. Host that shit on a blossom server, put the feed on github, good to go, doesn't cost a dime. Distributing your music shouldn't cost you 10%.

The irony is Blossom servers are going to make pirating the good stuff that much easier and anonymous. Then we’ll see how much people really like a censorship resistant protocol.

I don't like it, but I support it. I think your feed should be the source of truth. You can put it on a thumbdrive and reupload it elsewhere, and your stuff is back. I want you to be de-platformable, and your feed makes that possible. You may eventually need to run your own server in a bathroom in Colorado, but as long as you have a connection to the internet, someone can find your feed.
I also want to make one call to fetch all your info, the url of your feed.
The podcaster wallet makes the Podcast Index the source of truth. I have to fetch your feed from your url, plus your wallet info from the podcast index. I don't like that, and you shouldn't either. That means the Index *could* censor you and remove your source of income. I'd prefer you just put your wallet info in your feed.
But I'm an idealist, a self-sovereign sycophant. Anyone who claims Bitcoin is about sovereignty, not your keys, not your coins, freedom money, run your own node, etc, but is using the podcaster wallet is a grifter.

If you do put it into an RSS feed, let me know and I'll add your show to the Music Show tab on LNBeats

Nothing I can do, but if substack gives you an RSS feed, you can add a value block to the podcast index using this site. https://podcasterwallet.com/ It doesn't add it to your feed, but the podcast index will put it into their directory, and all the v4v apps will pull it from there.

@npub18hz…fmgv convinces me. I don't know enough about it to argue one way or another, but if Brian says it is, that's good enough for me.
