I got these new Knipex smooth-jawed pliers that are some next-level stuff for a tool geek like me. Not only do they set to a certain size via a convenient button that holds them at that size, but one side is pre-marked for metric size and the other has Standard. This is some very well thought-out engineering.
I geeked out so much over this 12" version when I got them last week that today my little 5" version that I ordered showed up.

#PhotoOfTheDay is the before-and-after of my post vise restoration. This was the second time I'd done one of these so I was a lot more familiar with what was needed this time around.
Farm fresh on the left as I got it, and after cleanup and long-overdue maintenance on the right. The after photo doesn't include the new spring and mounting pieces that I fabricated.

#PhotoOfTheDay is an old snapshot I took of a colorful California king snake I encountered while hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains near Mt. Umunhum.
I've come across king snakes over the years while hiking, but the others have all been the brown-patterned variety. This was the only one I've encountered with the red coloring, and it really gets your attention on the trail!
The king snake is not venomous.

That's true. Having a recent adventure always makes everything better - especially those dull work meetings! I always felt that weekends were for long hikes etc. and then going into the office was the ideal time to recover.
One of the things I learned in SAR is that the same demographic that compose most SAR teams are almost exactly the same as the people who SAR get called out to help. 😂

Ouch! Some lessons hurt more than others...
Playing in streams was probably my son's favorite thing while growing up. When he went to college he moved up from streams to the large river that ran through town. :)
Of course, they're more fun to get into *if you want to* get into them, and preferably not in that sudden, unwelcome way... I Once got to work at IBM one morning and sat though a couple of meetings with one leg of my jeans soaked to the knee. 😂

2026-06-12 20:04:47 UTC

You're using your head and thinking about it, which always bodes well. :)
The big chunks of granite in the Sierra streams/rivers are often *very* slippery, which is one of the main reasons that people go over nearby waterfalls in Yosemite.
Trekking poles are also great for those log/tree crossings. A tripod is much more stable than having just one leg planted on the ground while walking across.

2026-06-12 19:52:43 UTC

Slippery is always a concern, and sometimes even the solid-looking rocks can shift when you put weight on them... Trekking poles are often a huge help though!

Quest was the ship that Shackleton died on some years earlier. Its wreck was discovered fairly recently.

Yes, that's it. I forgot that most people call it Rest Step. :) I was taught that it's like an exaggerated bride walk step, although admittedly I have emo personal experience with trying that myself. 😁 There seem to be different ways the details are taught too.
Briefly: Both feet flat on ground. Lift one leg, swing it & have it straight when it lands while the other leg is normal. You then pivot your body over the straight leg, using less energy. Do this with alternate legs. Slow & steady.

Me: (Selects option to create a new empty folder on my Win11 i5 laptop)
Laptop: OH DEAR GOD NO WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? I MUST CRANK ON THE FANS AND DISPLAY THE EXPLORER NOT RESPONDING BANNER TO DEAL WITH THIS UNPRECEDENTED DEMAND ON MY PROCESSORS! YOU VICIOUS, HEARTLESS BASTARD! *sob*
Me: (Smiles and quietly fantasizes again about shooting this laptop.)

#PhotoOfTheDay is a night-blooming cereus cactus flower. These bloom overnight and then are gone, so timing is everything!

Nice photo! I do love that location, although all those stairs are more fun to go down than back up again... Whoever designed it with the little attached rest spot at the halfway point was a genius, with all the mixed groups using those stairs,

The fact that this threat exists is the absolutely perfect example of why we shouldn't rely on SpaceX or any other private firm for this sort of thing.

Agreed. And you never know where you'll find something interesting. There were tons of examples around the SF Bay Area: waterfalls just outside of a boring housing development; an old rail tunnel entrance down a path from someone's driveway; a small industrial park with several section of the Berlin Wall on display... The list seemed endless.

I'm the same. It helped me realize there was a corner of California I'd never seen so we took a family road trip for several days through there back in 2006.
Much of the fun of geocaching is exploring and seeing interesting locations, to me anyway. My philosophy with places caches has always been that the location or the cache *has* to be interesting, or both.

Fun... I forget if I ever finished getting all of the CA counties, there are so many of them. I may have been short a couple of them, but I was never interested in the challenge caches.

Looks like maybe you could do a WA DeLorme Challenge. I assume there is one, as well as a county challenge, if you're into those.

#PhotoOfTheDay is really just a photo of a painting, to change things up some... This is an interpretation of Eowyn from Lord of the Rings that my son painted for me several years ago, as he knew that Eowyn was always one of my favorite characters from the books.

Sorry to hear about the allergies, they can make everything miserable!.. These days I have them, but just minor and not really bad like I experienced for a couple of years, but I'll always remember how awful that was.

How did you like Whidbey? My wife lived there when she was young and speaks fondly of it. I've only been there once, briefly, back a zillion years ago.

Damn! I don't think my work hardhat has a chin strap either, that would really secure it from getting blown off in a situation like that.

A late #Caturday photo of Yama, who is a silly cat. There is a 50/50 chance she is either totally oblivious or plotting bloody revenge murder.

#PhotoOfTheDay is Ubehebe Crater, Death Valley National Park. It's half a mile deep and resulted when volcanic magma reached the groundwater, flashed it into steam, and BOOM!
