Anxious? Feeling overwhelmed by the world and life? Need "just the right words" to help you "get through it?"
Read my review of Anne Costa's book "Encouraging Words to Live By: 365 Days of Hope for the Anxious and Overwhelmed" I wish I had this book much earlier, it would have helped me better deal with anxiety and recurring feelings of being overwhelmed.

@nprofile…wnfl It seems very penitential. The first book opens with a novice serving his Lent out in the desert; the apocalyptic nature and monastic setting of the entire story (all 3 books) seem appropriate for Lent.

Jesus is the sole Redeemer and Mediator of all Humankind.
Mary, under her titles of co-Redeemer (Redemptrix) and co-Mediator (Mediatrix) is still a member of humanity; she is not a god, or demi-god. There’s God the Father, then, Jesus as the sole Mediator and Redeemer; and then, at the pinnacle of the human pile, Mary. She is not in any external position between humanity and Jesus.
By virtue of her Immaculate Conception is the most perfect and exalted member of humanity and because of that, she leads us to Jesus. What else can she do? That is how her Redemptrix and Mediatrix attributes (for lack of a better term) are worked out. She leads us to Jesus and intercedes for us with Him.

Today is December 13th, and it is a day shared by two saints who are patronesses of the same health condition: eye health. These are St. Lucy and Odilia. I am posting this as an ‘ex voto,’ which is a ‘votive offering’ to saints for favors received. I had cataract surgery nearly 3 years ago and need prescription reading glasses and frequent application of lubricating eyedrops; once I began a devotion to both saintly ladies my eye health has improved tremendously. I only need the reading glasses under certain conditions (more so prior to my devotion) and while I’ll eventually need cataract surgery in my other eye, that one’s health hasn’t deteriorated much and it may be many years before surgery is needed.

Today is the feast day of St. Juan Diego, the visionary of Guadalupe who saw Our Lady appear to him in this day in Mexico, 1531. I bring him up because I am a huge devotee of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and by connection, St. Juan Diego. I also discovered today that he miraculously interceded for a Mexican drug addict in completely curing him of his wounds from an apparent suicide attempt…. AND that this miraculous cure occurred at the very moment Pope St. John Paul II was beatifying Bl. Juan Diego on May 6, 1990!

The year 2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea, where the Nicene Creed was composed and approved by the bishops of the Latin and Greek Rites of the Catholic Church.
Pope Leo XIV recently traveled during November 27-30th to Iznik, Turkey (modern day Nicea) to honor this anniversary. The thought occurred to me to try come up with some thoughtful meditations for Sober Catholics. We say this Creed often (usually at Mass) and with anything said repeatedly, we might lose the meaning or impact of the words.

The St. Andrew’s Christmas Novena begins November 30th. It is piously believed that if you say this prayer fifteen times a day from November 30th (The Feast Day of St. Andrew, the Apostle) until December 24th, you will obtain what you prayed for. I think that the usual conditions apply: that it be in accordance with God’s will, that it not be detrimental to your salvation, and if it requires some effort on your part, that you do that (i.e. job hunting, finding a spouse, etc.) It is believed to have originated in Ireland in the late 19th Century.

St. Martin of Tours, patron saint of reformed alcoholics, vintners, and wine-makers, is associated with alcohol due to his patronage of the wine industry and the celebratory nature of his feast day, Martinmas. This celebration, marked by feasting and drinking, led to a period of penance and prayer, eventually evolving into Advent. While St. Martin himself never struggled with alcohol, his patronage reflects a logical connection to reformed alcoholics, similar to other saints’ patronages of things they weren't associated with in life.

The new Vatican document, “Mater Populi Fidelis,” clarifies Mary’s role in salvation, emphasizing her as the “Mother of Grace” rather than the “Mediator of All Graces.” It also cautions against overemphasizing her role as “Co-Redeemer” to avoid overshadowing Christ’s sole redemption. The document, well-written and extensively footnoted, serves as a valuable tool for evangelizing Protestants and helping Catholics understand Mary’s true role.
It may also help sobering up (and sober) Catholics clarify and better accept their relationship with Mary, especially those who had difficulty with their Earthly mothers.

God’s love is eternal and unchanging, our sins hinder our experience of that love. This perspective highlights the importance of examining our sins, particularly habitual ones, as misguided attempts to fill a “hole in the soul” that only God can truly satisfy. By recognizing this, we can open ourselves to a deeper experience of God’s love and transform our lives.

I had been using #Vivaldi, which is a great browser, but it takes up a lot of space on my HD (> 2GB whereas Safari and iCab take 35.2MB and 22.8 MB, respectively.)
This also means I will likely abandon, or at least rarely use, the Vivaldi Social Mastodon instance.

On this day in 2002, I had my last drunk. I have conflicting memories of what happened (I may have to search through old blog posts of prior soberversaries, but even in those I recall not completely recalling events.) At any rate, it’s of no consequence any more. Twenty-three years and everyone involved in my life back then is either dead or disappeared. Sorrow for the former, good riddance (mostly) for the latter. We move on and consign the past to God’s mercy, the present to His grace and the future to His Providence.

The Francis elements are his social justice advocacy; but this part of his makeup also seems to be heavily influenced by Leo’s apparent orthodox doctrinal qualities. Paul is a sober alcoholic and revert to the Church who found continued sobriety in the Sacraments, devotions and prayer life of the Church.
He started Sober Catholic (www.sobercatholic.com) back in 2007 after he had unsuccessfully searched all over for a blog or discussion site that focused on alcoholism and sobriety/recovery from a Catholic perspective. He created what he was looking for: a site that discusses how the Catholic Church, with Her rich traditions of Saints and miracles, and especially with Her Sacraments such as the Holy Eucharist and Confession, can help you maintain your sobriety.
He has also written several devotional books for sober (or sobering) Catholics. “The Recovery Rosary: Reflections for Alcoholics and Addicts,” and "Stations of the Cross for Alcoholics" and more recently "The Sober Catholic Way."

I ran across a reference on Spirit Daily to the USCCB’s Examination of Concience page. They list several for different states of life:

My Goodreads review of "A Canticle for Leibowitz"
Quote: "People refer to it as an example of “cyclic history;” however I think that misses the point: Human nature remains the same and concupiscence runs throughout every human life and culture. Evil (sin) does not have to innovate of come up with new schemes; old ones work everytime and will be repeated. Awareness of history is not a preventatitve, either: people can be willfully blind and listen to their pride rather than reason. Whether it is the “Flame Deluge” (nuclear war) of the 20th Century and the resulting “Simplification” (wanton destruction and mass killing of anyone intelligent) we learned about in “Fiat Homo” (the first Book of the novel), to the pride and intellectual bindness of Thon Taddeo in “Fiat Lux” (Book 2): Human nature’s tendency towards sin is the lowest common denominator in moving history forward."

Bl. Bartolo’s pious devotion to the Rosary and his meditations on the life of Christ “in Mary’s company” influenced a future Pope to transform one of the most fundamental Catholic devotions.

I think I'll begin my annual Lenten #reading of "A Canticle For Liebowitz" a few weeks early. The #novel maintains the pre-1962 #Catholic liturgical calendar, so it's appropriate given we are in the pre-Lenten season of Septuagesima. #apocalypse

"Fertilized egss being discarded" means "aborted." Imagine that; 'pro-life' Trump skyrocketing the slaughter of the innocents.
Lila Rose may be one of the few pro-life leaders with integrity. "Fr." Frank Pavone certainly has none. Others are somewhat muted in respoinding.

Blessed Sopocko was instrumental in guiding and advising St. Faustina Kowalska during her life, especially in getting her to write down the messages she received from Jesus as well as other observations on her life. These became the masterpiece spiritual work, "Divine Mercy In My Soul, the Diary of Sister M. Faustina Kowalska.”

OUR LADY OF LOURDES NOVENA BEGINS FEB 2! There are links to 5 good ones in this post.
Quote: "How is the Apparition of Our Lady at Lourdes related to the Sober Catholic Way? We are sick people, regardless of the length of our sobriety. Our Lady of Lourdes is our special channel of healing graces. Jesus is the Divine Physician and He works through His Mother at Lourdes. Even if you cannot get to France, you can avail yourself through prayer and meditation of requests for spiritual healing. Adopt Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette Soubirous as your special patrons."

Quote: "This upcoming Saturday, January 18th, I will be on the “The Bear Woznick Adventure! Bear interviewed me back in November. The interview was regarding my new book, “The Sober Catholic Way.” I thoroughly enjoyed the experience; it was like sitting across the table from him, just another dude at a tiki bar somewhere downing fruit juice drinks, enjoying the tropic breezes and watching the Pacific swells roll in, all the while yakking it up ‘bout stuff.
Here’s what the program description on iCatholicRadio (where you can listen every 6PM ET Saturdays) says about it: Bear’s rare adventures uniquely qualify him to be the adventure guide on this show that challenges men to deeper conversion and to servant leadership. Bear’s engaging interview style opens his guests to go deep and share their adventures, misadventures, conversion to the Lord and their walk with God.
That last line is so true. I told him stuff. You should listen in.

The Office of the Papal Almoner, headed by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, invited more than a thousand low-income people and refugees to enjoy the show in the large auditorium located on Via della Conciliazione, the wide avenue that leads to St. Peter’s Square.
On Tuesday afternoon, the thousands of guests presented their tickets, distributed at the soup kitchens and in the communities where they live, to enjoy this live performance that has been a success in France and that, starting Jan. 16, will be included in the official program of the 2025 Jubilee of Hope."

Re-reading my favorite #Tolkien story, “Leaf by Niggle.” I could have sworn that I originally read a line in it that went, “He was a painter by nature, if not by trade.” Try as I might, the “if not by trade” part can’t be found. I must have hallucinated.
