Notgonnastop

When I was organizing family farmers fighting foreclosure I drove alot of two lane roads in rural areas, and kept a bucket of grain in the trunk cuz you never knew when there's be cows/steers, flock of sheep, flock of ducks etc. who'd escaped their enclosure hanging out in the middle of the road and refusing to move. They alllllllll knew what the sound of banging on a bucket of grain meant.

Interesting that all the pictures in the article are of homeless outside encampments rather than the permanent supportive housing facilities. Just an observation.
My part of the city currently has 2 permanent supportive housing facilities in converted and renovated (old, run down and closed due to number of police and EMT runs, zoning code violations etc.) built in the 60s type hotels. The local community shelter board coordinates financing, renovation contractors, service providers and facility management, including 24/7 on site security, on site social worker, on site conflict management staff, bi-weekly food pantry on-site grocery truck (teaches nutrition and cooking as well as shopping habits), on site property maintenance staff, on site employment skills training and job training placement. Participation in supportive services is encouraged, not required as long as the requirements of the lease are being met. Repeated lease violations can, and has, led to eviction - although if the resident agrees to move out and sever the lease they generally are allowed to do that so they don't have an eviction on their record.
The facility management team meets with police, fire and code enforcement staff and city attorney monthly, and meets quarterly with the neighborhood group I represent. Residents sign a lease, the studio apartments are inspected by staff quarterly, and residents must be referred from the shelter board system after assessment for likelihood of learning how to be successful at living in permanent housing. Residents must be long term (1 year or more) homeless, and have a disability (including mental health disability). Over 8 years of operation of 1 facility and 5 years of the second, 78% of residents have been able to successfully move to regular apartments with no evictions. Yes, that means that for 22% of residents living in permanent supported housing they will remain at that point in the system.
Over the last 5 years I have become a housing first advocate - when the permanent supportive housing facility has this level of coordination. I have come to see that it's almost impossible to get your shit together if you don't have a safe, comfortable place to sleep knowing it will be there the next night and the next and on. And access to helpful services as easily as possible.

Just ordered a new refrigerator, delivery Wednesday. And now I feel sad - not at having to buy a new one, the current one that's clearly dying was 15 years old when I bought this house 20 years ago. Sad because I know I'll never again buy an appliance that lasts 25 or 30 or 35 years. Even entire HVAC systems now are only projected for 15-20 years max. Appliances like washers and dryers and refrigerators and stoves only get projected for 10-12 years now, even from high quality respected manufacturers.
And get off my lawn! :)
And am already feeling anxious anticipating having delivery come and looking at it and having to say 'there were special delivery instructions that the doors need to be reversed, you're not bringing it in here without the doors set as specified'. Because there's ALWAYS something fucked up with the delivery.

It's really easy to say that eating healthy and regular exercise is the best way to prevent obesity for those without genetic pre-dispositions - but there's so many cities/neighborhoods/rural areas here that just have no access to affordable, healthy food. Obesity and excess weight (different conditions) is a multi-pronged caused issue, and requires multi-pronged prevention measures. It's not just a matter of individual behavior, it includes structural systems that rely on people being sick.

While the dementia despot is claiming all the airspace right now, the rest of the world knows that the citizens of the USA are no longer able to run our government as a democracy no matter who is in the top spot. China, as always, patiently waits and continues amassing economic, technological and geographic power. All the other nations review that scene, and move accordingly to revise their plans based on their own interests that do not include mutual relationships with the USA.

Eggs are avian flu related, Trump never could have done anything to effect the supply problem and he lied during the campaign when he said he'd bring egg prices down. And his appointees to not just cabinet positions in HHS and Agriculture won't be implementing programs to address the problem adequately either.
The tariffs on Columbia will increase the overall price of all coffee, not just Colombian beans. And coffee prices will continue to increase in the future due to climate change impacts on coffee growing regions.
If he implements the threatened tariffs on Canada, yes, bacon prices will be affected - lots and lots of hogs cross the border to slaughterhouses here. And, given that China owns the Smithfield brand, including grow out and processing facilities in the USA, tariffs on China will effect meat prices too.
All that being said - the increase in grocery prices *after* covid supply chain problems were resolved is primarily price gouging by corporate food producers, processors and distributors. There aren't mechanisms in USA law to control price gouging - some laws are in place to penalize price gouging in declared disaster areas, but not general price controls. And there won't be any implemented by the current GOP controlled House, Senate or Executive branch.

So, I should be leaving right now for an open public meeting being held by a city official 15 minutes from my house. It's been snowing lightly for a half hour, will continue for another hour and a half but it'll only be around 1 inch accumulation. I don't HAVE to go to this meeting, but I SHOULD go to ensure an organization I represent is seen there - I've no idea if anyone else from the organization is going (the organization is all volunteer, no paid staff).
However, I have acknowledged for over a year now that my night vision is poor, especially on snow covered (even lightly) and wet roads without streetlights. Of more concern is the fact that there will be a thin cover of snow over everything in the parking lot, including patches of ice from thaw/refreeze of prior snow. So, I'm feeling guilty, but I'm gonna go put comfy sweatpants on and curl up on the couch with a book.
Sigh. I can still remember driving for 4 hours in a blizzard in the dark to present a worker health and safety workshop in a factory. 40 years ago. Perhaps the accumulated years since have impacted my personal risk/reward analysis.
