Hackers wear cat ears to indicate how easy it is to get them to do what you want them to do.
As any hackspace will confirm, dealing with a group of them really is like herding cats.
Cats with opposable thumbs who can fuck around with mains voltage and email servers.

By far my favourite part of 3D printing are still small, functional home modifications. Today: a mount for my air quality sensor and some very simple, subtle magnetic curtain clips (less visible IRL than on the photo) to stop my room divider curtains from separating.
I grabbed a bunch of these Awair Element boxes years ago second-hand when they were cheap, so I was surprised to see no models for it, making it my first from-scratch design. 👀 https://www.printables.com/model/1862578-awair-element-hidden-shelf-mount

Achievement unlocked: Published my first 3d printing model.
Ok, admittedly I only took a parametric model that was available in Onshape and rebuilt it in OpenSCAD, because I'm allergic to creating accounts for things that shouldn't need them. But, still!
Plus, it's super useful and I already printed several of them: Ventilated funnels that allow air to escape a container while you fill it: https://www.printables.com/model/1851236-parametric-ventilated-funnel-openscad-remix

What's good Windows GUI backup tooling to back up to a Hetzner storage box? (So: (S)FTP, SCP, Borg/Restic, WebDav)
I mainly want to offer family storage on my oversized storage box, so:
Needs a UI and should ideally need ~zero maintenance after setup. I know there's Backrest (restic UI for windows). I found Kopia, too, which sounds older/more stable, but I never heard of it, so no idea if it's good …

Gunicorn now categorises "Framework returns content on HEAD requests" as a bug, and warns about it for every request.
Django's position is "Web servers should automatically strip the content of responses to HEAD requests while leaving the headers unchanged".
So, that's fun! 🫠
(Screenshot shows ASGI commit, but it was added to WSGI too.)

@nprofile…8kn5 Needs a longer write-up, but in short: I have a stack of cards + a box with cards for future days; cards get removed or re-inserted at the end of the day after I'm done with them.
Two/three categories and some more nuance around repeating/avoiding cards.

@nprofile…jydu Private issue board that I built for pretalx for my exact brain and needs. Pretty much single-project, single-user (though I use it across all the pretalx things). Comes with a CLI so I can query/open/close issues directly like for GitHub.

@nprofile…wywj Mostly because I'm already self-hosting so much stuff, and CI is both burst-y and not much fun to host. My primary business is hosting software, so you could say I should just do that, but also, my primary business in truth is the user support and development for said software, and side quests like "self-host CI" aren't much fun to me. I'd be down to pay for a good CI thing, too, I just want reliability …

I've already moved my issue tracking off GitHub (only keeping issues there open because it's the easiest place for people to report problems), because the overall GitHub UI has been in steady decline for the past five years or more.
I don't mind the Dependabot ecosystem (but I can write update checks of my own). The other big part of GitHub that is hard to leave behind is the Security Advisory process (getting a CVE is just so much easier there), but that's fine.

2026-04-23 14:53:04 UTC

Where would I go if I wanted reliable CI for my Python software project? Running tests, linting checks, docs checks, translation checks and so on. Does not need to produce build artifacts (though seeing console output of the process would be nice for debugging reasons).
With GitHub Workflows approaching Travis-levels of reliability, I'm at "some 9s would be nice"

maybe finally reached the breaking point in moving as many remaining groups and convos from Threema to Signal:
I have to swap out my phone due to a failing display, and while Signal imports its 6GB data backup without a hitch, Threema just … dies at 3GB, probably due to lack of memory. Which is just … astounding. And bad. And I'll have to delete some data, which, wtf.

People with self-hosted photo storage: I'm considering moving from #Photoprism to #Immich. Any experiences with that (or with either of these)?
For context: I know that you can run both in parallel, but that feels like more bother than it’s worth, and getting trivial non-hacky upload in itself is enough reason to move (and that's without mentioning that Immich just seems on a much better trajectory as a project).
Addendum: experiences with using internal vs external libraries with Immich?

#python people: Library recommendations for parsing/validating/cleaning CSS?
I've been using cssutils so far, but there seems to be no hope of CSS3 landing (I really want nesting, but the library won't even add new properties to its parser, so slim chance of that).
Use case is to take user-provided CSS, validate it against a set of rules (allowed keywords/values/properties), in order to safely use it on public websites.

As pointed out by @nprofile…u6ay (thanks!) it seems like they removed the code that auto-generates these reports, and instead instance administrators have to generate them manually (as per the kinda hidden, collapsed conversation in https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/28693/files#r1450641772)
I’ll leave the issue open as a documentation request, as there is no information on any of this unless you watch the PRs and read the source code, and also as a request to make the feature more flexible (or at least remove the cringe.)

It’s very much written to our own and environment (e.g. it assumes local user reports are somwhat trustworthy), so probably not very applicable elsewere, but it *is* configurable.
It’s also intentionally limited and defensive:
- ONLY there to handle spam
- will ONLY take action against non-local users
- will NOT take actions against users that have followers from the local instance
- will require a certain amount of reports / local reports / reported posts / duplicated content

it’s cold and gloomy, so it’s time to knit something warm and cozy
and like every year, my main observation is that programmers could stand to learn a thing or ten from knitters re: documentation. a good pattern is a beauty of clarity, technicality (with a helpful appendix for the noobs), but also further guidance and observations rather than just "I auto-generated this documentation, good luck"
