AI assisted PR/issues appears to be quickly damaging what’s remaining of good energy and interactions in open source software maintenance. An extra year of this trajectory toward laziness in interactions and I can picture communities switching to invite-only or paying-only.

@nprofile…udtr Bouncing on “it’s a tool” paradigm: I guess varying use also have very different costs. I don’t imagine sorting saved blog posts (which btw were immensely important for me for personal reasons, and also very difficult to parse) is anywhere in the same cost league as “generate some random slop video”.

2026-07-16 16:14:59 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…udtr (If anything, my post was intended as a slight slap to AI enthusiasts reacting to Linus’s post, more than a reaction to said post and for this part I could have been more precise)

2026-07-16 16:06:33 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…udtr my choice of word “perfectly reasonable” for the Linus message wasn’t particularly careful about details in the message, more about general stance “the tool can be useful” and if anything I have been frustrated to see AI-bros reacting to that Linus message feeling vindicated because they are extrapolating much more than what was said.

2026-07-16 16:03:04 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…udtr The unhinged use of it I reckon is problematic (vibe coding being problematic on so many fronts: close to IP infringement, produce bad quality software which tends to be throwaway making the resource waste much worse, alter developers skills etc). But I feel there are good possible uses that will come out of this, perhaps from more specialized models.

2026-07-16 15:58:44 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…udtr wait, there are several topics bundled. I was answering to your message suggesting the robot was not intelligent enough, to this specific argument I am saying it doesn’t matter.
The cost matters. But I am not sure performing a well scoped task with no alternative solution
is a meaningful portion of cost vs big use of AI to brute force a way through things.

2026-07-16 15:27:48 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…udtr It also feel disingenuous to bring the "statistical word prediction" when it does have use. Sure its "intelligence" is weird, but I had Claude parse hundreds of messy manually saved out-of-order html blog posts and generate a neat indexed version. I would never have bothered writing a tool to do this otherwise.

2026-07-16 15:25:18 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…udtr I honestly don't care that it's not genuinely intelligent, if it can provide some value to me. A few weeks ago I pointed it at tricky problems I have and it helped me bounce idea, theories, and find edge/useful cases.

2026-07-16 15:15:57 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…udtr I'm not a person who is particularly excited by AI, nor do I have the slightest amount of admiration/trust for big tech. But it intuitively feels off to me to be resisting it using the argument that they stole FOSS ode.

2026-07-16 15:13:42 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…udtr Putting aside the other (real) issues, I sense a difference between using AI to make a full project mostly inspired by existing ones vs using AI to summarize, optimize or evaluate existing code. Learning from existing FOSS is "only" doing what humans would do at a much larger scale.

2026-07-16 14:52:49 UTC

Linus post on AI is perfectly reasonable. But the AI-people eagerly looking for validation seem oblivious to the fact that stating "AI is just a tool" doesn't give anyone a mandate nor an encouragement to naively vibeslop the kernel.

2026-07-16 14:34:25 UTC

Dear ImGui users: added feature to avoid scalars being written/update in backing variable while typing with keyboard.
Current default as of today is same as legacy but intent to is switch to new default for numeric variables very soon. You can already opt-in with 1 line:

2026-06-28 16:57:22 UTC

@nprofile…hm63 1.92.8 now also has a backend agnostic way to switch between linear/point sampler (without writing custom callback), and in Demo>Example>Image Viewer has a simple viewer with zooming which you might borrow.

FYI the coding help I need the most for Dear ImGui are related to tech that are most foreign to me: Vulkan, OSX, Metal, Android, Linux. Note that 1.93 (in 2 months?) will come with a sensible refactor and cleanup of vector rendering primitives.

@nprofile…ajxs ImDrawList is surprisingly versatile, as long as you don't need a different format for ImDrawVtx data, you can do a lot by e.g. using draw callback. https://www.thedragonstrap.com (the game itself) is entirely rendered via ImDrawList API.

@nprofile…ajxs Thanks for taking the time to answer on those back and forth! Hopefully that annoying transition is done and new system will work well for you!

2026-06-10 14:03:24 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs ... possibly there's info loss from the fact you are on a different backend which might not expose functions/comments the same way as original code.
Which Odin backend are you on? https://gitlab.com/L-4/odin-imgui/-/blob/main/imgui.odin?ref_type=heads seems pretty good at exposing comments.

2026-06-10 14:01:06 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs FYI i couldn't find much room for improvements within the existing comments, see https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/commit/f1dd18b75c4f08941ba691a75dad65b884415cb3. There's already a GetPixels() and GetPixelsAt() function and most backends use GetPixelsAt() + patch I presume it would likely have saved you twice if you cross-referenced the main commit for other "simpler" backends such as DX11, If you have suggestion on further reducing error rate for future users I am happy to hear them. (1/2)

2026-06-08 21:31:01 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs thanks for the update! I’ll see how I can tweak comments.

2026-06-06 11:28:23 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…h0jy @nprofile…0kf8 Ideally I would include one in stock ImGui but it would need to be less code than what md4c has. Otherwise it is a third party extension, and some exists already but I haven’t used/compared them much.

2026-06-06 10:30:16 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…h0jy it agree it would be great. I should try someday. Is that a custom parser or an existing one?

2026-06-03 13:42:49 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs I tried calling ClearFonts() in both DX11/Vulkan backends and surprisingly (or not surprisingly) it transparently still works even though everything is recreated every frame. I might add heuristic to detect situations where e.g. some ClearXXX functions are called every frame.

2026-06-03 13:28:43 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs I pushed a change https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/commit/14278db0240aefee9af8beb960053aaaea55dce3 to fix the fact that tex->Updates[] would keep growing if your code keeps calling ClearFonts(). It's more correct but unfortunately it was a good signal that something was done wrong. Added more logging.

2026-06-03 12:57:53 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs beside I didn't suggest your WIP code was offensive. What I am trying to reach is (1) you fixing your backend (2) me increasing the odds that most people can update a custom backend in <1 hour of work, by reduce the error surface.

2026-06-03 12:55:37 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs for example, knowing that someone tried to call ClearFonts() whilst in the middle of rendering, I might look into way I can detect and prevent this. This is how the software improve.

2026-06-03 12:53:55 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs about (2) can you details what it doesn't do for you? (3) yes because i'm fishing for info which might turn into documentation improvements, and I'd appreciate a list of what went wrong. Was calling ClearFonts() the primary issue? why did you end up calling it in the first place?

2026-06-03 12:14:44 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs and I don’t know how your sync_update_image_data() function on it so can’t tell if its args are correct. But in the backends doc you can refer to the vulkan commit if needed.

2026-06-03 12:11:24 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs the WantCreate handler is not calling SetStatus or SetTexId() on the correct texture. why didn’t you follow the provided sample? (or use the existing Vulkan renderer)

2026-06-03 09:15:28 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs best posting your whole code for updating textures to see what’s not matching the provided commits in the docs. But I would assume calling ClearFonts() is the biggest issue here

2026-06-03 07:06:17 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs the fact that Updates.Size is 1071 is also suspicious. There’s something fishy somewhere because that would normally be cleared in NewFrame().

2026-06-03 02:32:46 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs calling ClearFonts is in none of the example for updating your backends; it may alter the array you are iterating; and basically mean “destroy everything” everytime there’s an update meaning things will get recreated.

2026-06-03 02:29:15 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs err why calling ClearFonts???
No, the vertex format and shader have not changed at all.
Is there a chance that you may accidentally copying the imvector of textures?

2026-06-02 20:54:03 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs 1) not normal. What are the requests? What’s your code for them?
2) uv seems wrong do you create textures with the requested dimensions? Or maybe something to do with vtx buffer layout?

2026-06-02 20:28:55 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs are you storing types in texid or user data that requires C++ construction/destruction eg ref counter pointers?

2026-06-02 20:27:53 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs I presume you have read this section: https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/blob/master/docs/BACKENDS.md#rendering-adding-support-for-imguibackendflags_rendererhastextures-192 ? Do you have anything non standard: multithreaded rendering, multi context, multi atlas? If you share snippets I might help

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs After spotting your "I spend multiple days trying to migrate my Dear Imgui backend to 1.92.x" comment on bsky I would very much like details on what you tripped over, because it shouldn't take that long.

2026-06-02 16:27:57 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs Thanks. Well the irony is that I'd rather have people fire off their frustration and report confusion so I can learn from them and make changes. Even if it's "your" bug, it's also mine if it could be made more obvious how to avoid it.

2026-06-02 16:14:34 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs If you can narrow/clarify your problem or question don't hesitate to open a github issue, this is how the software and knowledge database grows.

2026-06-02 16:13:32 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs re: "you're reacting way too kindly to my vent post lol" it's basically my job to proactively scout for issues/problems/complains and try to address them the best I can, regardless of it being a change in code, docs, etc.

2026-06-02 16:12:04 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs Not sure if applies, but I heard of one case where calling io.Fonts->Clear() in the middle of the frame can lead to seeing an invalid _Destroy request. Clear() is a little bit confusing and should almost never be used, if you have legacy code recreating the atlas from scratch call ->ClearFonts() instead.

2026-06-02 16:08:21 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs And you can use `[X] Tools -> Debug Log -> [X] Fonts` to see a log of texture requests. For tracking on init frames time might need to bypass interactive UI and set GImGui->DebugLogFlags |= ImGuiDebugLogFlags_EventFont; (need imgui_internal.h)

2026-06-02 16:06:40 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs I added a doc section to promote setting TexMinWidth/TexMinHeight:
https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/blob/master/docs/FONTS.md#5-reduce-texture-resizescopy-on-startup
It's probably misplaced and I could add a section about memory usage etc. but regardless of the amount of docs/comments the problem is always how the information can be discovered.

2026-06-02 15:57:18 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs Unless there’s an unknown problem it shouldn’t. But warming up typically leads to a few initial resizes, which you can prevent by setting initial size if you know it. I don’t think there’s a viable better heuristic I can provide other than better documenting that people can tweak min size.

2026-06-02 07:10:46 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs Beside the current code is still fully retro compatible with pre < 1.92 meaning it should work exactly like before, even if you don’t support it. But it won’t for long.

2026-06-02 07:08:36 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ajxs well it happened to solve one of the most discussed issue and you are literally the first person I heard suggesting they might have a problem with updating texture. What problem do you have? You can request the glyphs you need at init time, then lock fonts/atlas from further changes and create texture only once.

Johan Goossens has rewritten Balázs Jákó's ImGuiColorTextEdit text editor widget (which has been unmaintained for years and had various forks) and made a newer version, with many fancy features: https://github.com/goossens/ImGuiColorTextEdit

Dear ImGui keyboard/gamepad controls update:
- Added keyboard support for Shift+F10 or Menu key opening context menus (somehow this was missing).
- Gamepad north face button now open context menu. It used to be "Activate with text input / osd keyboard" e.g. for sliders.
- Activating a widget for text input with the gamepad is now achieved by a long press on the main activation button (south face button on most mappings, east face button for Switch/Japan).
- Updated control sheets accordingly.

@nprofile…8d7p Sorry for all the breaking changes, normally everything is well documented and dear imgui improved immensely in past few years so those were quite desirable

@nprofile…8d7p (If that util/framework is using GLFW honestly it should be using imgui_impl_glfw backend for platform stuff, otherwise 100% chance you having missing features or bugs. But it seems reasonable that a vulkan tutorial rewrites a vulkan renderer instead of usig imgui_impl_vulkan.)

@nprofile…8d7p In addition, ImGuiVulkanUtil::handleKey() in that web uses API that were deprecated in 2022 & went unsupported in nov 2024.
The TL;DR is that:
io.KeysDown[key] = true ==> io.AddKeyEvent(key, true).
io.MousePos = pos; ==> io.AddMousePosEvent(pos); etc.
See https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/issues/4921 for details.

@nprofile…8d7p Nice tutorial! Would you be in a situation to update the imgui section (https://docs.vulkan.org/tutorial/latest/Building_a_Simple_Engine/GUI/02_imgui_setup.html) ? It is using GetTexDataAsRGBA32() which was marked obsolete in June 2025 and is a path that does not support e.g. dynamic font textures and will likely be unsupported in 2026. See https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/blob/master/docs/BACKENDS.md#rendering-adding-support-for-imguibackendflags_rendererhastextures-192 for precise instructions. Thanks.

@nprofile…6w63 OK but surely we would have seen more 256x256 palette-indexed textures (e.g. 64 KB) occasionally even back then. The person who made this engine pioneered new rendering techniques this year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNEo0aQkGnU Even being a "demomaking" techniques (aka trade-offs that wouldn't scale to a full game) it seems novel for the hw.

@nprofile…jful There are many free licensed fonts. Mostly this one purpose is to match old dear imgui font + use MIT license.

2026-02-13 15:18:42 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…jful It's mostly an ASCII + West European accent fonts, exactly same as ProggyClean. It's not a fancy international-support font but rather something that is small enough to be embeddable as a default.

2026-02-12 19:31:06 UTC

- reply

TL;DR:
- There are few MIT-licensed fonts.
- ProggyVector was 99% there but its license stack was not purely MIT (parts of it relied on an old non-standard license, potentially creating legal friction).
- To solve this, we had a new font created.
- ProggyFonts author approved 👍

2026-02-12 19:30:54 UTC

Releasing today: 'ProggyForever': a new MIT-licensed scalable font designed to closely match ProggyClean which happily served as Dear ImGui default font for 10+ years: https://github.com/ocornut/proggyforever
The new font is now embedded by default in Dear ImGui (compressed down to ~14 KB).

Update: bug was in an old version of the tool-chain (v140/2015) and fixed in more recent ones. I frequently use old tool-chains to exercise them, but it was my mistake to update VS yet forget to consider the project was using an older tool-chain.

I can't bother investigating because it quickly puts the computer to a crawl, but I would guess it is getting into a weird parsing/tokenizing state where the remainder of the large source file is being processed as part of that expression, or something of that sorts. Also happens after updating toolchain.

2026-01-26 16:14:26 UTC

To increase feature discovery I often try to make the software self-documenting. Here e.g. I added a help popup in the error log when running automated tests from the GUI. Each of them needs to be designed to not get in the way of advanced users.

Below 4K resoltions, without imgui_freetype and at same size than the classic bitmap font, most fonts didn't look great enough. New font IMHO looks worse at 13px (below selection threshold) but not shocking. From 14px it looks competitively good. Nowadays most apps would default to larger sizes.

2025-12-23 17:50:49 UTC

- reply

Required quite some tweaks to get right & small. Still mono-space and configurable, just changes the initial default above a certain scale threshold. You can opt-in to the classic bitmap one. I believe new one is a better default, hopefully makes a non-configured Dear ImGui nicer.

2025-12-23 17:40:59 UTC

Dear ImGui now embeds a vector/scalable version of the classic font by default, manually subsetted/optimized so it fits in 18 KB (opt-out possible). Embedding ensures easily and readily usable in all contexts. Should default to new one on most setups. Here's a compare of both. #ChristmasMiracle

I have extracted a trimmed-compressed version, down to 18 KB, which would be an alternate default in a future version of dear imgui. )

Someone nudged me yesterday and I finished some old stashed thing: added color component markers to ColorEdit (+ opt-out flags/styling options + opt-in flags on regular non-color multi-components widgets).
