This past night’s 35-missile attack on #Kyiv, which started around 01:30, lasted about hour, during which there were many explosions, some very close to my building. I tried to sleep after that, but there’s really no way. Human nervous systems don’t function like that. #Ukraine is a nation of severely sleep-deprived people. They fight on because they must. I think it masterfully spells out the situation. The problem is that it’s humiliating for Putin, not the language of the letter but just the fact that Putin is being schooled on the facts. The letter is rational while Putin is not. He has a grand fantasy that has him trapped in a corner. I really don’t see him coming to his senses. So I think the letter is really aimed at everyone else: decision makers around the world, the US Congress, ordinary voters, the Russian people… I wonder if the letter is available to them in Russian somehow.

I’m dismayed that this citizen initiative to stop Russian imports into the #EU has garnered only about 14,000 signatures in 3 months. What am I missing? Is there something objectionable in the write-up? Are these initiatives not well publicized?

Your post brought to mind a conversation I had in 2023 with a Polish chemical engineer as I traversed Poland on my way to Ukraine. He said Poland was better off as part of the USSR. Evidently, there were far fewer onerous regulations on business back then.

How baffling. I’ve long puzzled over Russia’s treatment of their own troops. It’s like bodies are to be spent, like artillery shells, even in training. Maybe it’s worse than that. Maybe they expend bodies in order to conserve shells.
It’s probably changing now, but the USA has a tradition of thinking of a soldier as an investment. Well, at least in this century. Vietnam was totally different. I think it’s a good sign that the various US military services are now balking at putting personnel in harm’s way for the sake of Trump’s Iran lunacy.

I’d like to weigh in with a public service announcement. I learned many years ago that there’s always the possibility to be trapped in car after a wreck. The frame warps, doors may not open, seatbelts may not release. That’s why I always had a car window breaker Velcro’d to the carpet right beside the driver seat. The model shown below has a nice weighted pointy hammer for breaking windows, while the other end has a recessed blade for cutting seatbelts. Never had to use one, and never drove without one.
All that said, Tesla stinks.

I suppose sheer incompetence could be behind the release of a completely redacted document, as in nobody had any clue what was actually being released, which explains the takedowns. Some genius said, “Well, we’re out of time. We’ll just have to review it when it’s out there.”

Good catch. And those 16 files that got taken down? I hope someone is copying all the files as they appear so similar comparisons can be done.
I was wondering, “What’s the use of releasing a document that is completely redacted?” I mean they’re not releasing all the documents all at once anyway. Why include a completely redacted document in the first release? Why not wait until the end and say, “We considered this document for a long time, trying to find bits that didn’t need redaction, and we failed, so here it is, completely redacted.”
But no. They released a completely blacked-out file in the first batch of documents, and I can imagine only one reason for that: to deliver a big F U.

One of the Ukrainian co-founders of the kitchen where I volunteer, just sent this message to all volunteers, Ukrainian and international:
This week, it seems like from all corners, the narrative has shifted to everything being bad in Ukraine, and that we should agree to some kind of peace plan. That Russia is advancing, and Ukraine is losing territory. That we are in a weak position.
What can I say about this? Essentially, all these peace plans are capitulation. Yes, as a nation, we make mistakes. As the folk proverb says – "we step on the same rake." And until we learn these lessons, we are doomed to step on them. But we are definitely learning and definitely changing. Yes, through pain and loss. Unfortunately. But there will come a moment when the lessons are learned and the necessary conclusions are drawn. The main thing is that we have not lost our dignity and stand for our country. And as long as we stand for our country, we will succeed. I have seen it, I know it, I believe in it. And you see it too.
I understand we are not yet at the hardest point, and we are no longer at a crossroads. I understand that serious challenges lie ahead. But we will overcome them, because on the path we have chosen, it's either all or nothing.
Perhaps the best visualization of Ukraine's resilience is the comparison of these two maps.
We have had to live through another period of destruction and rebuilding of the world order. What the world will be like hangs in the balance. And it is precisely on the resilience of our nation that this now depends.

Can Delta Chat serve as a Telegram replacement in the way that a Telegram channel can have hundreds of thousands of subscribers? I’m trying to find a way to persuade much of Ukraine to get off Telegram. It’s used here as a news service and we get air alert information on it. Of the channels I subscribe to, the one with the most subscribers has 900,000. Could Delta Chat handle that?

The easy way for trump to really end russia’s war in Ukraine and take all the credit is to facilitate Ukraine’s entry into NATO. That would end the war immediately and prevent further war in Europe.
He won’t do that because he really wants to legitimize putin’s claims so he can proceed with imperial claims of his own. This is why Denmark is currently preparing for war.
Europe has to awaken from its shock-induced stupor in the face of its former ally’s betrayal. If NATO is hobbled by the USA’s membership, then a new defense alliance must be created now and Ukraine must be admitted immediately.

Lots of folks across the Americas object to citizens of the USA referring to their country as “America” and to themselves as “Americans,” and I get that. In fact, I think I asked my teacher about this when I was nine. We ought to have a more unique word to refer to ourselves, so I’m trying out this portmanteau of “US citizen:” USen, pronounced you-ESS-en.
Example: I’m a USen based in Kyiv.
What do you think? Other ideas?

I heartily agree. I’ve been testing Kagi Translate with French and Ukrainian. I’m C1 in French and have been impressed with how much better Kagi is than Google. My Ukrainian language teacher is impressed with how good Kagi is with Ukrainian. I understand Kagi uses multiple AI’s to generate a translation and then somehow picks the best. I’m so curious about how that last bit is accomplished! It amuses me to think about the AI’s consulting with each other and then voting. 🤖🤖🤖
