I dropped my phone and broke it again. It jumped out of my pocket while I was running for the train, and bounced off the platform onto the rocks on the tracks, shattering the screen.
How do y'all carry these enormous modern smartphones? I have huge cargo pants pockets but my latest phone is too big to fit securely even in those pockets. It's too big to fit in regular pockets comfortably.
I guess ladies carry them in purses? Maybe I need a man purse.

@nprofile…zejv So this was the spokescouncil model, with affinity groups gathered behind their appointed speakers? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consensus_decision-making#Spokescouncil
This also sounds relevant, I'm interested in any large crowds making decisions together in person, without intermediating technology (not counting amplified sound).
What's the best way for me to learn more about your experiences? Have you written about it at all? Could I interview you?

2026-07-31 22:41:23 UTC

I want to learn more about the general assemblies used by the Occupy Movement to make decisions through consensus in a crowd: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_assembly_%28Occupy_movement%29
Could you recommend primary sources? Did you ever attend one?
I'm interested in how it felt to participate in one, and in details of exactly how it functioned (or didn't function).
Has anyone used similar tactics since #Occupy burned out? Wikipedia mentions historical precedents but not anything afterwards.

@nprofile…926n Plant diverse native plants to attract wildlife that will take care of plentiful pests, and generally rewild at least some of your yard by leaving leaf litter etc. Pests may remain, but if your yard is sufficiently welcoming to wildlife, parasitic wasps etc. will find any pest that's growing out of control and use it for their own purposes.
When I moved into my house, scale was out of control on my hydrangeas. Now there are many native plants and very few scale insects.

I'm a parent with a 9-month old baby looking to chat with other parents. Can you recommend fedi accounts of parents with younger children who talk about parenting? (There may be many silent parents on here.)
Bonus points if they ride bikes / avoid cars, are passionate about climate justice, are COVID conscious / interested in public health, or concerned about LLMs & surveillance capitalism (all relatively common on fedi no doubt, despite conditions in the outside world).

@nprofile…2uyx My impression is that Codeberg's effort level is to avoid the scrapers DDOS-ing the site and harming availability of the service, and they are falling a significant chunk of the time. They do not seem close to preventing their code from ending up in LLM training material.
I love Codeberg and I use it, but I think we can / must do better. I currently have my new code going forward in private repos on SourceHut, only shared with collaborators, but I don't like not sharing my code publicly.

2026-06-20 14:45:08 UTC

Does anyone know of a code forge that is relatively protected against LLM scrapers, such that it's unlikely they have code from it in their dataset, without requiring humans to log in to see the code? I'm not demanding perfect anti-scraper security, I know it's a moving target.
I know that it's possible for me to self-host a forge and install #iocaine or whatever, but we should be able to do this stuff as a community, not always literally requiring do-it-yourself.

Wait, did iNaturalist release something cool and helpful that doesn't rely on LLMs at all, and in fact resembles something the community has asked for for years (a way to find ID tips)? I was sure their brains were entirely rotted and it would be pure slop from here on out:
:inaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org/posts/132065-new-search-and-sort-tool-identification-tips
I also don't see obvious slop commits in their repo, which also surprises me:

Maybe there's still hope for iNat.

@nprofile…pfuj These seeds won't sprout until next year if you simply spread them on the ground, because they require cold stratification. If you want native plants sooner it will take more effort or money.

@nprofile…3src Bjork is great, don't listen to the haters. Or, well, maybe she's played out for you and that's also valid. But like if people find her weird, and she is weird, that's a silly thing to dislike a pop star for. If you want a pop star who is boring and incapable of surprising you, you can just have generative AI produce statistically likely pablum from the corpus of actual artists.
Were these haters all guys? Did they simply hate her because she's a woman who is famous and successful?

@nprofile…pfuj This is not an infestation, but please enjoy this queen and perhaps her (extremely ephemeral) king. Likely winter ants. They were crawling down my back alley like they were late for a very important date.
I was tempted to try catching the queen to found a captive ant colony, but I don't know how to tell if she's finished mating. Also I have a baby and maybe I don't need more responsibility.

A standard modern Linux machine that simply has no Internet? (what distro still works well offline?) A #retrocomputing relic? Some weird hardware specifically designed for #children, like the dear departed One Laptop Per Child?
I especially want to keep my child away from LLMs.

#Philly, did you know that ICE killed one of our neighbors recently? Parady La was a Cambodian refugee living in Upper Darby, where he was detained on Jan 6. ICE apparently denied him medical care and water. He was found unresponsive in his cell, and taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City, where he was declared brain dead on Jan 8. He was 46 years old.

But I imagine lowering and raising a plow to be mechanically complex and finicky, and I would love tips.

I'd love practical tips. Right now I can't go into stores with my baby because she can't mask, having the ability to wheel her inside would greatly expand what I can do while caring for my child. Also useful during wildfire smoke.

I daydream of publishing a hyperlocal news source, but if it's too location-specific, it reveals where I live. Not sure how to keep the focus tight and control my ambitions while preserving my privacy. Going for a larger geographic area and limiting the subject matter might be an easier way to keep the scope small, but I don't want to tie my hands in terms of what I cover.
Any suggestions? Shitposts and pooptoots welcome, as well as serious responses.

The highlight of my Halloween: I was rushing to get some healthy treats out, and handed some fruit to a child behind me without looking at them. Their adult informed me gleefully, "You just gave a banana to a banana," and sure enough I turned around and a little girl was wearing a banana costume. I apologized for the bananas being green, and she said "I like green bananas!"
The lowlight of my Halloween: discovering that ska is dead.

Our "Cylon drills" where we avoid networked computers for a day are a constant learning experience. We rely on smartphones for so much that we forget all the use cases, until we put them away.
Lessons from the last Cylon drill:
* Weather forecast (to choose clothes) - Listened to WHYY until they mentioned the weather at the top of the hour
* Train schedules - Walked to the station to look at the printed schedule posted there, memorized options for the train home (we missed the outbound train)

#Philly folks, how are you voting in the Democratic primary tomorrow? (Or how have you already voted, by mail?)
The Working Families Party has endorsed several candidates that the #Philadelphia Bar Association does not recommend:
https://workingfamilies.org/2025/04/pennsylvania-working-families-party-endorses-over-35-primary-election-candidates-across-commonwealth/
https://judges.philadelphiabar.org/
For municipal court the situation seems especially dire if you care about Bar recommendations, since you can vote for 3 judges but the Bar only recommends 1. Does that mean 2 non-recommended judges win no matter what?

@nprofile…sw23 First, this is whataboutism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataboutism
More than one thing can be bad at the same time. And if in order to take action on one bad thing, you had to take action on every other bad thing too, no one would ever take action.
Second, LLMs are problematic in so many ways, I don't give a shit about copyright and I still believe they are an existential threat. For starters, how about AI scrapers being so burdensome they drive sites offline? https://drewdevault.com/2025/03/17/2025-03-17-Stop-externalizing-your-costs-on-me.html

The main cons are the expense and time it takes, if you can afford those the other downsides are trivial.

My Gmail is unusable. It's all marketing emails, donation asks, and possible scams. It's necessary to log in to endless accounts that I've built up over decades, but that's exactly the problem, every service I've ever signed up for wants to send me automated emails.
I kind of just want to delete it, but I'd lose access to most of my online life, and if I ever order anything online again, the process will just start over again.
If I ignore it, I might miss a crucial #email alert.

When I DDG "can I put bird feeder through dishwasher" I get a site that says "no", but it also says "Grapefruit Seed Extract is safer for you and the birds and is up to 100 times more effective than bleach", which seems weird enough that I wonder if an LLM is trying to sell it:

Why were most of the cyclists in this photo wearing masks in November 1977? Was it to avoid breathing polluted air?
If so, thank goodness we have the EPA now; I hope we can address modern threats to air quality, like climate change related wildfires, rather than giving up and letting the air become difficult to breathe again.

We're back to my recurring nightmare of making it easy for a non-technical client to edit a static website generated using #Hugo.
Are there any good solutions? Or am I going to end up writing my own solution after many painful hours with other people's janky solutions?
If you know of a non-technical user successfully editing a static website, how are they doing it?

I seem to have adopted an intern at my dysfunctional web business.
The intern is in high school, knows basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and has a little experience using Ruby and other programming languages. However they have never used git, for example, and presumably lack experience with similar essential tools.
How would you help a beginner programmer get started, with a focus on technologies relevant to the web and web infrastructure?
I already recommended they play https://ohmygit.org/

I asked protestors at the UPenn camp how non-Penn people can best help, and they said their top need right now is more people attending rallies.
They said the best way to stay up to date on when rallies are occurring is to follow relevant accounts on Instagram, or to check this whiteboard at the camp.
A rally is happening tonight at 7:30pm.

Suppose you had to produce a local computer from scratch, completely independent from existing manufacturers like Intel. (If you need a specific location for this hypothetical, let's say Greater Philadelphia.) No chip fabs in China, Taiwan etc. The tech level and computing power doesn't matter, you can tailor the application to the power of the computer; indie local production is top priority.
What is the best approach? A simple conventional silicon chip? Vacuum tubes? Analog? Mechanical?

Several days ago, while I was in the bathroom, this robin was perched on my roof, seemingly basking in the sun. Maggie at first called it "majestic". But it turned out that it was doing the same thing I was: communing with its digestive system.

I hate killing plants, even when I know it's necessary. I had a maple sapling growing in my yard too close to my little rowhome; wrong tree, wrong location. I dug it up.
I put it in a pot. Help. What do I do now? Anyone want a baby maple?

@npub156n…mvgw That's the problem, I do want to buy 10 more bicycles, but usually I can't afford to do so immediately after buying a bicycle. It's cruel, really.

Please, can we ban gas powered leaf blowers in Philadelphia? https://www.quietcleanphilly.org/
I just don't want to hear them ever again. We don't have to discuss the environmental costs if we can band together simply to eliminate a really annoying noise.

@npub1jeq…jglm There's a pre-existing game called chessball that my friend came up with. It resembles chess less, but it was played with a chess table, and it's designed to encourage thinking about your position a bit before throwing the ball, rather than maximizing speed. https://www.stairball.club/chessball-rules/
