Interesting early voting results from the Texas senate race. I've been watching since yesterday with 3% of the votes in. Now we're up to 15%. TBH it really shouldn't be this close. But Texas gonna Tex I guess. 😅 https://votehub.com/2026-early-vote-tracker?state=texas

Brilliant work here from my colleague Ian Verrender laying out the problem.
"Wages have not kept pace with inflation as asset prices have soared. Property ownership in many Western nations is almost out of reach of ordinary workers while rents have skyrocketed.
That has concentrated wealth in an increasingly smaller cohort of wealthy households."
i.e. ever-increasing wealth and income inequality.
Solution?
Decrease wealth and income inequality.
Tax wealth more, tax work less. That's it.
Tell your mates. Tell your local representatives.
Cheers and good luck out there friends.

One thing that really bugs me every time I go to Aldi and I have my backpack with me (which is often because I ride my bike to the shops a lot) is they must have a really strict backpack check policy because they ask to check it every single time, through the self-checkouts, through the normal checkouts, every single time. I understand shoplifting happens but it's pretty clear I'm not in there stuffing shit into my backpack then buying stuff at the register, and even if I was I would simply put it in the front pocket which they never check anyway. Like, come on don't you have cameras and security watching out for actual shoplifters? I think I'm at the point where I'll just go to Coles or Woolies as they never stop me and make me open my bag up like a common criminal. Anyway, rant over. Thanks for listening hahaha

75 years! I enjoyed this write up, a lot.
"If it’s not too late, read it early in life – as part of a varied literary diet – then read it again after a couple of decades, and see how the text has transformed."
I remember reading Catcher in the Rye back at university and relating to Holden a little too much:
"First, when you’re about Holden Caulfield’s age, you should read it uncritically – or rather, you should be critical the way Holden is. You should share his dismissal of the adult world and the popular kids as phony, and so on. You should feel “seen”. You may or may not leave this first encounter wanting a peaked red hunting cap with earflaps."
And in subsequent readings, during different parts of my life, discovered how cringe and phoney Holden actually was, and of course after hearing about what a crumby dude J.D. Salinger was.
It is a staggering piece of literature though. Maybe I'll pick up my old tattered copy again. Maybe not.

This video is so funny because you can hear the ever-growing frustration in Gary's voice that people still don't get this simple concept. All the economists and bootlickers arguing against a wealth tax are literally arguing for more tax on themselves and they don't even realise it.
"Governments will be politically forced to step in to try to deal with the growing poverty. But because they do not have the capacity to tax the richest people in society, they are going to tax you. [...] So when you argue for not taxing the very rich, what you are arguing for is the taxation of yourself."

ABC commissions catalyse further industry investment. For every $1 the ABC invested in external co-productions, an additional $1.31 was leveraged from other public and private sources, including state agencies, international partners and private investors. By anchoring projects early, ABC investment supports a pipeline of future productions, enabling ideas to progress into viable projects, unlocking multi‑source financing that strengthens the broader market.

I've been watching a bunch of economics videos lately and it's enabled me to see a bunch of features baked into the system we live in, that I totally just accepted at face value and never really thought deeply about before, like this explanation for why central banks have target inflation and purposely devalue the currency over time.
---
Economists want money to be devalued by 2–2.5% every year. This is a designed, intentional feature of the system. Why? It essentially enables corporations to cut workers' wages over time without actively doing so. It's very difficult for a company to cut your actual wage — they'd have to convince you to sign a new contract at a lower pay, and you'd probably say no. But if money is automatically devalued by 2–3% per year, your wage is automatically being devalued by 2–3% per year. Your company doesn't have to cut it — you have to actively fight to prevent it from being cut.

I saw a video the other day explaining our persistence in performing the rituals of continual economic growth year after year by likening it to the Cargo Cults that formed in the Pacific after WWII.
We're going through the motions of consumption, consumerism, and expansion, hoping that mid-century prosperity drops from the sky again.
It's like we're treating infinite growth as a law of nature, a gift from our ancestors, completely ignoring that the system we're running is entirely incompatible with the physical constraint of the world we live in.

“Every country that has tried to build its way out of housing crises without dealing with the underlying problem of inequality and distribution has built a slum. The whole world is filled with these places that have had no restrictions on housing, and they built a massive shanty town outside of their city.
“And you think that can’t happen in a country like Australia. I grew up in Ilford, which is a poor suburb of East London...it was a poor suburb for working-class families, and it is now a slum. It’s as simple as that. All respect to the people that live there, is a place of desperate poverty, and those family homes are now expanded backwards, expanded upwards, and rented out by the room.
“Australia is a bit behind on this, but you’re going in the same direction. You will build a super luxury centre surrounded by extremely low-quality slums.”

Every time the media talks about a "cost of living crisis," they frame it like a passing storm. We are told to just weather it.
But when the cost of basic survival skyrockets and wages stagnate, we are looking at a permanent, systemic downward shift in class. Wealth is actively being extracted upward into assets the rest of us do not own. People are being quietly squeezed into poverty while working full time. The baseline of a secure life is being dismantled, and our diminished quality of life is exactly how the top tier is securing their gains.

In many major cities, an average house earns more in annual equity growth than the median full-time worker earns in their pre-tax salary. Think about that: we have built an economy where an empty pile of bricks is literally compensated better than 40 hours a week of your actual labor.

This article is a few years old but I feel like it pretty accurately captures some kinda way I've been feeling lately. 2026 might very well be the year of small yet steady transcendence. We'll see. https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2022/10/what-transcendent-experiences-do-your-brain-religion-spirituality/671883/

Absolutely wild that I'm still seeing ABC articles with X post embeds in them like they're literally linking straight to a child sexual abuse website and everyone seems to be OK with that. Might be time to use that complaint form. https://help.abc.net.au/hc/en-us/articles/360001153176-I-wish-to-lodge-a-complaint-about-something-I-saw-heard-or-read-on-ABC-What-can-I-do

Cancelled our Netflix after finishing up Stranger Things the other week. Assumed they'd email us with some kind of deal trying to win us back. But nothing yet. They don't even offer a free trial any more that we could try to email hop like the old days. Oh well. Guess I'll keep waiting.

I'm thinking it may be time to get off Gmail. What's the good email service that people use on here again?

Anyone else notice the annoying trend on algorithm-based social media where a clip from an older movie is posted where it's not immediately obvious what the movie is, but it's very familiar, with the text something like "I will never forget this scene after all this time" and you have to click through to the replies and find the one person saying "what's the movie???" then click those replies to find the person who knows the movie and is kind enough to post the title. So then the algorithm boosts the post thinking users really want to see what people are saying about it but they're just looking for the title. It's kind of like engagement bait but not quite. It's like nostalgia targeted information bait. I dunno. Anyone? Just me? Anyway that's why I like it here better. You never see that here.

Just cancelled Netflix. Not sure why we're paying them that much and they still show us ads and then they want me to pay up even more to get rid of the ads. Total scam.

If someone today is earning $75k a year and had their grandparents' purchasing power, they would be looking at houses worth over $2 million, on a single income, instead of being priced out of the median by investors and landlords. That's not progress. That's the generational wealth gap, and we're living it.

It's not even December yet but Vada was excited to start putting Xmas stuff up and she made a list of things she wants Santa to bring her haha

If someone today is earning $75k a year. To match their grandparents' home-buying power, they'd need to earn $214k, a 185% pay rise. Think about that next time your boss offers you 3.5% and calls it generous.
