I really enjoyed this episode, as someone who previously criticised matrix for its decisions, after reading every "I've given up on matrix" blog post, after trying every alternative, ive spun up a Continuwuity matrix homeserver and its the best experience I've had so far.
it obviously still has some sharp edges, but I think there is some very good work going into matrix to solve these problems and I'm glad matrix has someone like Andy working on it!
IMO its the best we have and i still reckon it is the future

this is probably what id suggest trying first. someones probably said this before but i dont think immich is really meant for this sort of usecase, as such it might feel a little clunky. ive used it for years doing my phone's video and photo backup though.

setting up a recursive resolver on your end-device might not be what you want, because then all unique queries come from the external address of your device which means auth resolvers could log your traffic and collate those. if you query a trusted/public group of recursive resolvers (that doesnt use EDNS Client Subnet blah blah) your unique queries are grouped by a whole bunch of users rather than just yourself, which also means you'll be hitting cached entries from other users. i think having an option to use GrapheneOS resolvers is fine, but also not using them is also fine.

It's incredibly interesting to me that the state of the room could be rolled back that far with your server hosting the channel which would be the "source of truth". Obviously I'm not familiar with the state resolution protocol or the inner workings of matrix and its probably much too complicated and created by much smarter people than I. It is a little annoying that you have to follow such tight set of rules to maintain a stable room when socially things can be complicated, and maybe i guess Matrix isnt something my grandma would be using but I do think that something that fundamentally works much better (less bugs, easier to understand) would be better no? Maybe i'll have to have a look at Matrix to learn a bit more.

I have never properly used matrix, but all I generally hear is that it has bugs like this that affect communities badly and servers having performance issues. I wonder why this is. Obviously you guys running your own instance would know best but enabling something like invite only on large channels guess makes it hard to synchronize the state of who is meant to read messages or not? is it encrypted at that point? hmm
i dont intend to start a protocol battle buy as a long time IRC user I feel for public channels and project discussions (even private rooms) IRC does most things, yes there is no image uploads, probably the most annoying thing but at least its stable and within our control?
