ta fella. it was a lead for a company to buy tickets and the page just didn't load. had a tiny panic, but was 97% sure it was on their side - just not cool to be like "hey, buy our tickets - IT WORKS FOR ME" :D

After careful consideration and a look at where the industry is spending it's funding we've decided to pivot #FFConf in a "new" direction.
I present to you: https://ffconf.ai/
Please share with bots and humans alike.

2026-09-29 07:26:39 UTC

Appreciate this is going to go rather wide, but we've had reports of https://ffconf.org not being reachable (literally ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED).
I'd really appreciate a test and if anyone finds it refusing to let me know (obs it's reporting as up on downforme, etc).

I do think that the RSVP reading method is impressive, and I'm mostly happy at 600wpm, and I can see it working for articles or non-fiction but cannot see how this works for fiction. There's no time for my imagination to catch up!
Any one out there read a novel using RSVP?

I am, personally, attracted to a single account that works across lots of apps where the data is public, but there's something in me that would be happier if I controlled the security (even if that were a paid hosted service). "Free" is never free for the users...

Food for thought, and something that's been niggling at me: https://kevinak.se/blog/who-actually-owns-your-atproto-identity-hint-its-probably-not-you
> ATProto asks you to put more of your digital life under a single identity[…] But at the key management level, it's a level of trust that would make even a centralized platform blush.

Good morning early risers (yes, this is "early" to me - I know, I know you've been awake for hours…).
Do me a favour please. Encourage that colleague or friend to apply to our CFP, and pop 25-June in your diary for @npub1z2w…pxl4 tickets release.
Also, please share 🙏❣️

I rarely open Safari, so excuse me if this is a stupid question.
I've got Safari 17. I want to try CSS Grid Lanes - but I need Safari 26+
No download at apple-com/safari. Don't want Safari TP.
Please tell me I can download stable WITHOUT a full OS update…surely I've got this wrong?

Friends/lazyweb, I recall there being a few sites posted that list people's blogs (like https://personalsit.es) but it had pulled their feed URLs too - I just can't remember what it was called (and my bookmark game is uber weak🤦).
Anyone know what I'm on about?

Prompted by @npub159n…rz7e' encouragement, I've written about popovers and the backdrop psuedo selector and how I think…it can lead to anti-patterns, it certainly did for me.

The little (hacked) handheld always surprises me. It holds its charge especially well - I've not charged it in 6 months and still boots (which I don't tend to expect from modern hardware).

Friends, I have £1,000 that I want to donate to a UK trans support charity.
I've donated in the past, but I was hoping someone (with experience) could recommend a charity that they think would benefit from the donation (and helped you in some way).
It's a single donation to make a greater impact.
If you have any questions, please do ask me too (or DMs/email)

Movie you’ve watched more than six times with a gif. Hard mode: no Stars (Wars nor Trek), LOTR, or Marvel.
(really want to watch this again now - can you name it?)

This is grotesque. I lost any love for Vercel & Next years ago, but seeing him cozy up with genocide in Gaza — is beyond words. I feel for the employees.
The horrifying truth: businesses that worked with the Nazis didn’t fall to capitalism. It’s down to us, we have to take our business elsewhere.

Random TIL for the day, inadvertently via @npub19vz…zmql post here https://www.zachleat.com/web/history-of-eleventy-name/ - the US had a _different_ Dennis the Menace, which explains the 1993 movie that really confused me with it's visuals as a teen.
Only took a few decades to work it out 🤦

Web components:
I love the idea of being able to reuse the custom component through my codebase and potentially other projects.
I hate the idea that it's 100% reliant on JavaScript.
I know what I'm after is some kind of server side include…just, doesn't sit right.

generally no issue. And yeah, the warning system feels a bit over the top. If you hadn't spotted it already, if you hover on the triangle, then in the tooltip is the "updating" text which is a link to that project's setting, then you bump the ubuntu release.
One thing I'm not sure is whether it automatically deploys a new version there and then, or waits for a new push.

I ended up having to block youtube on mobile devices (specifically for the boy, 13yrs) because he would mainline youtube shorts searching for the next giggle (which we loved hearing), but it was trashing his attention. He can still watch it on the TV, but it's just not that well suited to shorts.

2025-04-24 10:43:36 UTC

I will add that this is also blocked for the family (youngest doesn't have a smart phone, but the 13 year old does). YouTube is also blocked on kid's devices and only works on the TV.
I strongly believe that parents should moderate children's access to the web. Hairy topic though!

2025-04-24 10:43:31 UTC

For the last few months I've had twitter, facebook, instagram, tiktok (not that I'd ever actually visited) completely blocked from my devices - both on local home wifi and mobile over cellular data.
I'm missing a good chunk of the internet and I sort of think that's totally fine.

I don't really talk publically about my politics, though I suspect they can be derived from some of my views. But I was spurred on to (finally) put down in black and white (bytes) where I stand, particularly when it comes to events: https://remysharp.com/2025/04/07/do-politics-belong-at-web-events

re-reading, now think you meant GTM (just a typo). Agree, but also think there should be gated logic to prevent it landing on sensitive pages.

2025-03-08 12:03:28 UTC

- reply

not sure what GTN is, but I know that push back. I'm not saying tracking links shouldn't be added to sites, but in that example, the tiktok tracker could have been blocked from medication listing pages (or profiles). That's down to a dev to gate, rather than have it apply across the site (which is what I suspect happened)

Amazon will remove the ability to download the ebooks for Kindle at the end of the month. So if you ever close your amazon account, you'll no longer be able to access the books you had bought.
Let's fix that:
1. https://github.com/treetrum/amazon-kindle-bulk-downloader
2. https://calibre-ebook.com/download
3. https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools/releases
The bit you'll need is the kindle serial (from amazon's site), then you can convert to epub

An incomplete list of web page elements that don't require JavaScript to work (so STOP FUCKING USING JS TO BREAK THEM):
- images
- checkboxes & radio buttons
- placeholder text
- scrollbar
- forms
- actual fucking links

If anyone fancies bagging themselves $80 off for #blackfriday on my https://terminal.training course, and seeing videos of "slim Rem" (as opposed to "cake Rem" which exists today), then you can use the code "SUBSCRIBER" on checkout of the master course (no subscription required!)

Flight Sim: I left Dublin for Brighton. After 20 minutes of cruise, I realised it's real time and it's a 2+ hour flight.
Suffice to say, I decided to nose dive into the sea.

Listening to @npub1dpj…e0jl and @npub1228…wtdf's latest chit https://offthemainthread.libsyn.com/chromes-secretly-installed-extensions - and on the hidden extension in chromium, my opinion (fwiw) echos what Jake is saying, essentially, it's the fact that it exists allows a pathway for any number of additional hidden extensions and permissions. Broken window effect, and leaves us not caring or losing trust.
