Look at this place! A romance bookstore with tea and goodies. It seems very cozy. I walked by it the other day; had no idea it existed. As you might expect, the window is full of queer romances this month.

The thing is, catcalling does not really signal interest. It signals status and power over the person on the receiving end of the catcall, and it signals that they are excluded from whatever group the man doing the catcalling is with.

"I've heard people suggest that products that last slow economies. That isn't true. They change who gets to make money."
This right here is probably the real driver of disposability. If things last, rich parasites don't make excess profits from people continually replacing manufactured goods. Instead ordinary people keep the income from repairs in their circles. Can't allow working class people to thrive, or they won't be willing to be pawns any longer.

You're not that likely to see it unless you are a target of it (or you help run an instance), because most of it occurs in DMs or as replies to specific people. It's commonplace for different groups of people to have extremely different experiences on Mastodon, and for those experiences to be largely invisible to others, just because of the way the core systems work.

The way they do it in classes for adult beginners is to remove the pedals (which usually requires a special pedal wrench) to create an adult-sized balance bike. You then lower the seat until you can sit on it and run. Gradually, you lift your feet off the ground while you're moving, until you're confident with balance and steering. At that point, you reattach the pedals and raise the saddle so you can ride the bike normally.

I've always tended to the opposite, to try not to telegraph that I know men are there at a distance, but watch them surreptitiously. I have ditched someone who was following me once that I know for sure, and once when I suspected they were but couldn't be sure, both times in urban areas.
There was an occasion, many years ago, when I was surrounded and physically harassed by 5 or 6 men on the street. I remember acting without any conscious volition, watching the scene from a vantage point a few feet behind my left shoulder -- weird sensation, that. I got right up in the leader's face and screamed at him, and punched him in the chest with the blade end of a screwdriver. (At the time, I had a junk car that had no ignition switch; the screwdriver was for starting the car.) Seems I was aggressive enough to make them reconsider, because when I turned and slowly walked away, they left.

What you're saying about bears is contradicted by decades of research.
Grizzlies are in fact pretty dangerous, but even they often walk away if given space.
I've met several black bears, and all but one of them ran off as fast as they could. The one who didn't immediately run away was at a campground where bears were accustomed to finding food, and wanted our dinner. That one too, walked away when people started yelling and throwing things at it.

"Free fares increase ridership, and more riders mean more spending. More riders plus streetcar outcomes noted earlier are associated with $2.3 million more tax revenue in 2023 than in 2019, adjusted for inflation. This excludes all other revenues, which are substantial.
The bottom line is that the $800,000 in waived streetcar fares is associated with $2.3 million in new tax revenue since 2019 for a net gain of $1.5 million.
Put differently, each $1.00 of waived fares is associated with $2.88 in new tax revenue."

Question for #SFBA bike people: If you had an older full-suspension mountain bike that needed some love after sitting in storage for several years, where in SF would you take it to get that work done? Pretty sure every fluid in its little body needs to be replaced, for starters. I don't trust that it's in condition to ride safely, so it needs to be somewhere reachable by Muni.
