#WordWeavers Day 2: Other than novels, what types of writing do you do, such as poetry, screen plays, etc?
I usually write poetry and short stories nowadays. Although I have a couple of longer works, I have to squeeze in time between my family and my health issues.
I also write fan fiction. There are others who don't consider it 'real' writing, but it's creative words on a page, which counts in my book.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 16 — What's a trope you'd like to see subverted?
Becoming a parent means that your adventuring days are over (especially if you're a mother). Your character development is completely tied to your role.
There are badarse people IN HISTORY who were awesome in their own right, even with kids. (Eleanor of Aquitaine comes to mind)

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 2: What are the limits of critique?
Ripping something apart in the name of 'helping (you) write better'.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 16: Have you ever based a character more or less on yourself?
When I first started writing at 8, my character was a girl like me who was moving to a new place and didn't know anyone.
I grew up in a military family. I went to 10 schools by the time I graduated high school. That character was very much me.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 30. This month, how did you successfully navigate a challenge or a sticky point in your writing?
I had a massive writer's block with anything longer than a poem. I realized I was getting obsessed with how many people read my prose and that it wasn't very good.
So I just decided to write what I want for a bit and not worry about what anyone else thought.

Do you find poetry and writing equally rewarding, or is it more of a mood thing?
It depends on the day. I started as a short story writer. My first one was about a girl who had to move to a new place when I was 8 years old. My family was military, and art reflects real life.
I didn't start writing poetry until I was in middle school, and started doing it again when I had three little kids. So it really depends on what I can accomplish day to day.

What's your favourite thing to do/see at a Ren Faire?
I love the general atmosphere. The food, the joust, the music (all the performers!). I love the cosplays. It just amazes me how creative these cosplayers are and how much time and effort they put into their cosplays.
My most favourite thing to do is people watch. I get ideas for characters while eating that huge turkey leg. 😂

Any funny stories from DM'ing?
I have a couple. I ran a one shot that was Star Wars themed. My players were a group of Jedi were exploring Sith ruins (Yavin IV, long before A New Hope).
They found an artifact that belonged to a tiny DEAD Twi'lek Sith. I had the group roll to prevent being mind-controlled.
The big burly Jedi leader failed. With a Nat 1. So he got a fussy SITH SORCERER in his head for the rest of the session. I played the Sith. 🤣

"Does writing poetry help you with your short stories?"
It does. 😁
Writing haiku, haiga, tanka and other short forms encourages me to get to the heart of what I want to write. They have a certain prescribed pattern (# of syllables, # of lines, etc) that I need to fit what I want to say. It's very immediate.
Short stories are the same way, especially if they need to fit a certain word count. You tell a story in a short amount of time and space.

The erhu is a lovely instrument. You hear it a lot in Chinese movies (C-pop and wushu)
You hear it here in "The Beauty Song" from "The House of Flying Daggers": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bMpJ6nrrcA
And this is from Eliot Tordo. He's a Frenchman who plays several instruments, including the erhu. This is his cover of "The Last of the Mohicans" on the Erhu. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woO0_PspQg4

"Has being a parent changed your writing? If so, how?"
Definitely. Practicality wise, I have to write whenever I can. Sometimes it's for 5 minutes, sometimes it's for an hour.
My three kids are autistic, two of them are VERY high-need IDD (Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled). My youngest is verbal, but our relationship has its ups and downs. It's given me insight in mother/daughter relationships and how I write them.

Do you ever use mythology, folklore or traditional tales in what you write?
I have, for certain characters. For fanfiction (specifically Final Fantasy XIV), my original character, Morroyo is very Filipino-coded. In the game, long ago, there was a race called the Ancients (a precursor race to the modern peoples). Most Ancients were named after Greek mythology deities.
Morroyo's Ancient is Mapulon, the Filipino God of Seasons. He broke from tradition. 😂

Grammar? When I do conlangs, I try to make it as consistent as possible. It's just easier that way. 😂 And boy, do I keep a LOT of notes.
And there are certain expressions and turns of phrase that are specific to Jhana's social class. That includes swear words ("Khali's Blood!") which mentions Deities. Also specific words for an action. For example, "murder" "kill" and "expire" are different words.
There's a different alphabet, but in writing I use English letters.

Conlangs, continued:
Upperclass nobles (like Jhana) speak a more elegant-sounding form of their language. It almost sounds like music, with distinct accents and beats. A common person's speech sounds rougher with more abrupt, choppy endings.
Example:
"vanash" (to die)
Jhana: "VAH-nahsh" (last syllable is soft "sh" sound)
Jhana's assassin: "VAH-nahdge" (last syllable rhymes with 'judge")
It's a subtle difference, but you can tell when spoken

Re: Conlangs!
The first thing I consider is HOW the language is being used. Is it the general language spoken widely? Is it very specific to a group of people (trade tongue? Thieves cant? Limited to an guild?).
Who speaks it? It depends on the characters and the story. In Jhana's story, there is the general tongue, the lingua franca that everyone knows. But depending on the social class you come from, it's spoken differently.

My original undergraduate degree is in Foreign Languages and Education and I've worked a lot with ESL/EFL students. I don't have a formal linguistics degree, but I have taken various courses (phonology and semantics)
I was a military brat and moved a lot between Europe and the States. My parents spoke Tagalog at home, but only English to me. I can understand it a LOT better than I can speak it.

Where did you learn to play the lyre? And the other old instruments you mentioned?
The lyre you saw me playing in the RenFest picture? No formal lessons, but I've been interested in stringed instruments. I have a very similar instrument at home called a bowed psaltry. My mother in law plays the hammer dulcimer (also similar to the lyre and psaltry), which she introduced to me about ten years ago.
I have a two-stringed erhu (Chinese violin) as well and learning that.

I love seeing my players interact with each other. They'll come up with solutions to problems that I hadn't considered. And seeing them have fun!
Least? Sometimes the time involved in planning is a lot.

What role do you think social media plays in shaping photography trends today and impacting emerging photographers?
I think social media favors raw, in-the-moment snapshots done by a phone. Look at Tiktok and Instagram. It's not all bad, but it influences trends. (My younger daughter is 16 and is constantly showing me bite-sized memes and videos on her phone. 😂 )
It helps make traditional photography accessible, but nowadays it's more for the clout.

#WordWeavers Day 17: If your MC could decide how the last scene you wrote would end, how would it differ from your version?
Tink: "Sifa, I'm not THAT clueless!"
Me: "Sorry, sweetie, in some things...yes, you are."
"But that's embarrassing!"
"Yeah, but you learn from it, right?"
"...yeah."

Congratulations on the book release! 😁
Since today is May the Fourth Day:
Jedi or Sith?
And a #writing question: What's your writing schedule like? Do you write by hand or by keyboard?

#WritersCoffeeClub Day4: What are some tips and tricks you use to convey strong emotions?
Word choice and character action. There are many ways to convey a character saying "I'm disappointed in you."
A mobster holding a gun at a character saying "I'm disappointed in you" is different to a mother saying that to a teenager while she's distracted by a call on her iPhone.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 22: What distracts you the most from writing? How do you deal?
Uh...real life? Kiddos have emergencies, sickness and chronic illness, family drama, take your pick.
If I write a sentence, that's good for some days.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 23: What is your favourite mistake encountered when editing?
I'm British, but I've lived in the US for thirty-odd years. And I use both the British and American spellings when I'm writing.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 17: What are your biggest fears for the writing world in 2025?
AI slop becoming the norm.
I tutor kids in English. A lot of them do not write (or have reading comprehension) at grade level. Reading and writing are 'boring'.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 27: What's the elevator pitch for your current WIP?

Will she get more coffee?
Find out.

#writerscoffeeclub Day 18: Do you believe editing is where the magic happens?
It’s where the magic is shaped and refined.
I think a good bit of the magic is when you write the first draft and all your ideas spill out on the page.

2024-09-01 18:57:24 UTC

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 1: What have been your writing-related achievements in the last year?
Writing more consistently with my poetry every day (https://e8thespresso.blogspot.com/ )
Working on a new collection of short stories
Making more writer friends on line
Developing new ideas for 2 projects
Not letting naysayers affect my writing, especially in the first drafts.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 24: What's the mix of character, description, dialogue and action in your WIP? Is this your usual style?
I try to be balanced in all of those. In the first draft, I tend to do a lot of dialogue and action, but slim on description and character. Then I expand on those in later drafts.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 13: What's your favourite antagoist to write? Villains, anti-heros, rivals?
I write a lot of anti-heroes. All villains think they're the hero in their own story. They need a motivation to do what they do, and sometimes those motivations can be sympathetic.
But, to quote, "Cool motive, still murder."

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 6: Have you queried agents for traditional publishing? How did it go?
At the beginning, I did, but I never received any responses. I figured they weren't interested and looked elsewhere.
I can tell you stories about vanity presses that were like 😬 when I was younger and stupid.
I do more self publishing now.

Ugh. I tried to get a dental appointment to take care of a bad tooth, but can't get an emergency appt, and the earliest one is 6/4. I had to ask Hubby to call his HR to find out who handles our dental insurance, and he was irritated that I had to ask.
My life now. Sigh. 😑Marry someone who cares.

#Wordweavers Day 21: Do you consider how your MC's appearance may contribute to stereotypes?
Sometimes. There are many stereotypes of female characters (the femme fatale, the 'evil' witch, etc). I like to subvert stereotypes and turn them on their head. Each character is unique with their own personality. I show that through their dialogue and actions.

#WritersCoffeeClub #Day 2: Have you had an idea halfway or more through a project that requires extensive rewriting of what you've already done?
Oh yeah. 🤣 It's happened more times than I care to admit. When that happens, I open another file and run with it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I make sure to save the original file, though, just in case.

2024-05-02 12:27:24 UTC

#Wordweavers Day 2: What are your MC's living conditions like? Are they better or worse than the average?
Jhana is considered a noblewoman, so her living conditions are pretty much opulent, a lot better than the average.
Tink prefers hers rather plain but comfortable. She's not into the trappings of wealth, but she wants to live nicely.
