Writing haiku, haiga, tanka and other short forms encourages me to get to the heart of what I want to write. They have a certain prescribed pattern (# of syllables, # of lines, etc) that I need to fit what I want to say. It's very immediate.
Short stories are the same way, especially if they need to fit a certain word count. You tell a story in a short amount of time and space.
