Also: schaue ich mir jetzt an. 🙂

Scheduled maintenance: Saturday, 17 October 2026, 20:00 CEST (UTC+2)
I will be performing #backups, #updates and other #maintenance on the following #Friendica project services:
• files.friendi.ca
• git.friendi.ca
• ci.friendi.ca
The maintenance window is expected to last approximately two hours.
During this time, the services may go up and down several times and should not be considered reliably available.
I will post #status updates as replies to this message. Please check this thread for the current status.
Once I post the final all-clear, the services can be considered fully and reliably available again.

Another massive distributed HTTP flood is currently hitting git.friendi.ca and causing slow responses. Operationally, this has to be treated as an application-layer DDoS attack, although we cannot determine from the logs whether disruption or aggressive scraping is the original intent.
In a fresh five-minute sample, Anubis saw 56,457 requests carrying client IPs from 50,470 different addresses:
48,519 requests via IPv4
7,938 requests via IPv6
43,621 unique IPv4 addresses
7,407 unique IPv6 addresses
We compared all addresses against the Tor Project’s official, target-specific exit list for our server on port 443. There were zero Tor exit nodes in the sample.
The traffic is spread across many networks and regions and appears more consistent with a large residential-proxy or compromised-device network than with Tor. We are investigating additional capacity protection that does not lock out legitimate users.

Sorry for the slow responses from git.friendi.ca this evening.
There was a massive and globally distributed scraper storm targeting expensive, randomly generated filter combinations on the Friendica Addons pull-request overview.
Even though #Anubis was active, far too many requests still reached #Forgejo.
Some statistics from the incident:
• The storm started at approximately 21:28 CEST.
• Anubis issued 144,192 challenges to 115,724 different source IP addresses.
• At the peak, Anubis issued 8,965 challenges per minute.
• 70,402 connections were abandoned while being proxied.
• Only 33 requests matched an explicit Anubis deny rule.
• 193,401 requests reached the Friendica Addons pull-request overview.
• The peak was 5,580 requests per minute, or about 93 requests per second, on this single page.
• 44,478 requests completed with HTTP 200.
• 148,923 requests ended with HTTP 500, often after triggering expensive database and Git operations.
• Forgejo briefly consumed about four CPU cores and 3.6 GiB of memory.
• The server load exceeded 80.
The traffic started declining significantly at around 22:11 CEST. Git operations such as clone, fetch and push were not the target, but the excessive load slowed down the entire service.
We are investigating additional global request and concurrency limits that protect the web interface without disrupting normal Git clients.
Sorry for the disruption.

Could maintaining this template and its translations perhaps be something AI could help with? More importantly, would it be acceptable to us as a project if this work were AI-assisted, provided that all changes are reviewed and contributed transparently?

2026-08-01 08:48:34 UTC

I found a custom home.tmpl on git.friendi.ca containing translations for 14 languages. Its language conditions still used the old .Lang variable, so the custom content no longer followed Forgejo’s language selection. Changing it to ctx.Locale.Language fixed this on Forgejo 15.
Is this template and its generator maintained in a Git repository somewhere? And where do the existing translations come from? I’d prefer to contribute the fix at its source instead of maintaining it only on the live server.

git 1.8.3.1
curl 7.29.0
OpenSSL 1.0.2k-fips
`git ls-remote git.friendi.ca/friendica/php-j… liefert wieder die Tags inkl. 1.1.5.

Teste mal:
git --version; curl --version; openssl version; git -c http.sslVersion=tlsv1.2 ls-remote git.friendi.ca/friendica/php-j…
gegen das hier:
git --version; curl --version; openssl version; git ls-remote git.friendi.ca/friendica/php-j…

Hello
I guess I have a couple of million dead or fake accounts in my stats on f.utzer.de.
I see
Currently this node is aware of 45,119 nodes (16,721,938 active users last month, 3,634,365 active users last six months, 58,867,121 registered users in total)
here: /admin/federation
And here the Guru writes the Fediverse only has 13 million accounts?
mastodon.social/@Gargron/11659…
What is the problem? Do we count that many more users in parts of the network that are not visible to the Mastodon world or what do I miss?

2026-05-14 07:29:27 UTC

@nprofile…j7u7 and you used 222 as port?
I will try to setup a repo and pull/push by ssh to see what happens.

@nprofile…j7u7 I think there is a place in the forgejo account settings where you have to add your ssh key. Can you check?

- reply

@nprofile…j7u7 yes I believe you need a ssh key. I am actually the admin, but have almost no clue about git and none about git push.
Was there any other reply yet?

Also muss etwas Neues her.

I think it is kind of slow right now because there is lots of scraping taking place.

and as this went so well I will not do another backup and then pin the #forgejo version to 14 and do another docker pull.

Hello
after the successfull backup of git.friendi.ca I will not start another backup followed by a pull of forgejo 13 (latest).
I will inform here if this was successful and when the task is done, I expect about 10 to 20 minutes.

Hello
there will be a downtime of git.friendi.ca now for a quick backup in shutdown condition so I have a fully consistant backup.
I think it will take 20 minutes.

@nprofile…p4fz it was pinned to 13 before for some reason, but I will look into it the next days.

@nprofile…p4fz thanks, I am not really concerned with Forgejo usually, so I am not sure if the update is easily possible, but if it is straight forward and not a problem I will do it.

Please test git.friendi.ca and let me know if you find anything suspicious.
Maybe I should offer a bug bounty so the AI bots start scraping/looking for faults?

Hello
FYI

Hello
We’ve noticed that git.friendi.ca is currently getting a lot of automated traffic (“scraping”). Some of it is totally normal and expected, but the volume has become high enough that it sometimes affects the web UI and can contribute to errors/timeouts.
Among the busiest user agents we’re seeing are crawlers like meta-externalagent, ClaudeBot, Applebot, as well as other SEO/security scanners (e.g. AliyunSecBot, Bytespider, etc.).
What we changed
To keep the service responsive for humans (and for normal Git operations), we introduced rate limiting for the web UI pages that are most expensive to render:
• UI browsing is limited to ~2 requests/second per IP, with a burst of up to 20 requests allowed.
• This applies mainly to “browse-heavy” endpoints such as:
• /explore, /search, /pulls, /issues, /milestones, /activity, /repo/search
• repo browsing paths like /<owner>/<repo>/(commits|commit|src|blame|compare|raw)/…
• Git smart HTTP endpoints (clone/pull/push) are intentionally not throttled, so normal Git usage should remain unaffected.
(Background: NGINX’s limit_req enforces an average rate per IP and uses burst to allow short spikes; requests beyond the burst can be rejected, typically with HTTP 503, unless configured otherwise. )
If you notice any issues
Please let us know if you run into problems after this change, especially if you see 503, 429, timeouts, or anything that looks “new”.
When reporting, it helps a lot if you include:
• the exact error message
• screenshot (web)
• command + full output (CLI)
Example: GIT_CURL_VERBOSE=1 git clone ... or the relevant part of your CI logs
• time + your approximate IP/network (home/office/VPN) if possible
Thanks for helping keep this a smooth community service. ❤️

@nprofile…0ys8 I think you can use any version with apache, I checked on friendi.ca and there was no release since "2024.12-apache", so the next version would be "2026.01-apache" or if you don't want to edit your compose file anymore I think you can also use "stable-apache". The later would cause an update whenever a new stable version is available and the update would be triggered whenever you cause docker to update (I think docker compose pull would do that).
I am a docker novice, so better not trust me on all this, but this is how far I understand it.

@nprofile…0ys8 the stable branch now is 01.2026.
Check docker hub which tags you can find there. Maybe there was no release in the last years.

Hello
can I switch the docker branch now?
I have right now:
app:
image: friendica:2025.07-rc-fpm
and
cron:
image: friendica:2025.07-rc-fpm
Can I switch this to:
app:
image: friendica:stable-fpm
and
cron:
image: friendica:stable-fpm
And just do a docker pull?
#Friendica #Docker

2026-02-26 07:25:41 UTC

Which setting of GD and ImageMagick in #Friendica is causing that big JPEG are not processed and hence uploada fail after the Upload finished?
Upload limits are all high enough, but the 40...40 MB file uploads and then nothing more happens.
I might have asked that question already some years ago.
