I live about 5 minutes walk to the nearest bus stop, 10 from a hub and 20 to the main train station. Buses and trains run every day. I can't understate (or overstate?) how useful this is.

this might sound weird, but the pubs and restaraunts in Dublin can get really loud with the ambient music, like nightclub level volume even during the day. So if you can find a place that you can have a conversation in normal speaking volume that might be best.

I find Bradbury stories really sticky in general and this one has always been extra memorable. Here is a cartoon version from 1984. It's in Russian and translation/captions work but it's still fine without them.

The Darlingtonia Californicas are back inside as the weather is heating up again and they require root cooling. The older indoor setup had a glass monitor stand with a USB fan under it but right now I am using refrigerated water and frozen picnic packs in the water trays. These are mostly easy to care for but you really need to avoid sudden heat spikes (learned that the hard way).

A sleepy wasp or bee came by and wanted sugar so I cut off a pitcher for it. I moved it to the greenhouse shortly after this pic so it could warm up and it later flew away at normal speed.

yes, you can curate your feed with hashtags. When you want to pull new posts for a topic that interests you into your feed you can subscribe to the hashtag by following it, just like you would follow a user account. There's a nice guide here:

A couple of my favorites are #BloomScrolling and #FensterFreitag (Window Friday). There is also a lot of neat stuff and help with things in #Gardening and #Plants

for the model case I just made up above I already know agencies can and should self-host or use a server for that purpose (I am arguing with myself here) but there is something keeping most of them from actually taking that step. It's happening here in Germany (NINA, with local alert accounts for some cities) but not that much in other countries, and I wonder why.

and yes agreed, the network will function, even with only a few people, so things like (so-called) growth hacking and critical mass don't really apply either, but at the same time- if an agency like National Weather Service for Lodi, California (as an example) needs a place to be able to send an emergency bulletin and they don't have a good place to reach people and we can help them get the message out- I think if we can, yeah we shouldn't make it too difficult. @npub1lph…w53g

Also- please make sure your gear is visible as dark-colored materials can virtually disappear in some areas which makes it harder for everyone (another lesson learned the hard way). People will generally give you the extra walking space as long as they can see what you need. Last year I posted about the issue and some people pointed me in the right direction to a UV-Tape display and it worked really well.

#39c3 hint, if you think you might need to take your assistive mobility gear to Congress and are unsure about it (pack weight, bulk, etc.) it's still a good idea to take it, even if you are not a daily user. Canes, crutches, walkers, etc. are available in Hamburg during business hours but it's no fun having to hunt something down last-minute and probably getting whatever is just available in-store as it might not be the best fit. Also test your gear before going (I learned this the hard way).

It *looks* like the sphagnum moss that was overwintered outside with this Darlingtonia Californica (Cobra Lily) is starting to wake up from dormancy (the Darlingtonia itself will still be a bit until it starts growing again). It was in a portable greenhouse on the balcony all winter (Zone 7b, DE) until a few days ago. I was worried that it would die off over the winter but it looks much better than my indoor-grown moss.

Checking in on the bog that I replanted on the 16th with a digital magnifier to see how it is settling in. Seems like it's doing okay (most sundew traps are progressing except for a couple and the Venus Flytrap seeds seem to have set). Some moss has burnt tips like it did in the old container and not sure if it's the lighting, dry conditions or something else yet.

Packing away the winter greenhouses and acclimating some of the outdoor plants to springlike weather fully outdoors (Zone 7b). We still have some freezes so I kept the protection fabric out and will cover them at night (and they will probably be moving inside at times as needed). The thin white frost cover doubles as a sun shade for the afternoon. I'm leaving the dead traps on until I divide/repot which should hopefully be next week.

Whew! I knew this was going to be a tricky replanting and it was but went more smoothly than I'd expected. This mini bog started out in 2023 as a random throwing things together with different Sundew seed stalks, moss and some Butterworts in a Tupperware-type container using coconut coir as the growing medium and I actually didn't expect it to survive. It seemed to (mostly) do okay and it was time to move it to a larger container.

A change of plans resulted in me starting spring replanting this week instead of later, but I prepared the Venus Flytrap seedlings from 2023 for their first year outdoors (see link for original seeding). The germination cups were getting kind of ick anyway. There are also some Pinguicula Weser/Butterwort divisions in the second pic I replanted today. Most carnivorous plants do best when replanting while still dormant.

there is a lot of great advice so far, what I would add is if you bring a backpack, it might be best to keep it in your lap during talks (especially in room Janssen, mine was soaked in beer from a spill or more in the above rows).
This has never been a problem before (for me), but last year I was pickpocketed in the crowd outside Delirium (only a vape, luckily).
Bluetooth can be very congested so if you wear headphones make sure they can also work wired.

Posting in English in case there are people who have purchased a Tolino e-reader and ebooks through Weltbild and do not speak German so may have not seen the news. You'll need to back up your books very soon/now. I would recommend locally and for those who want to link their library to another bookseller, follow the instructions at the link (you'll need to translate). Don't factory reset the e-reader itself yet or delete your Weltbild account.

seeing the Meta one in the context of an indicator coming from an instance-local POV instead of the grand overview POV of the commonly used one is making more sense to me now, so I tried to reconcile the two of them to see how it would work, but I am not very good at that as you can see from the results :)

Possible origin of the term "The Fediverse" as a term
I'm going from memory, so not sure it's all correct, but usage of the word "Fediverse" early on was typically used with the "!", as a cross-instance general posting group (Fediverse being the "who", in this case "everybody") and was often combined with a subject/topic group (the "what", in the case of !tzag(*), a greeting, which optionally had tags to other subjects or groups.
