i had to do a few repairs to make it usable
- replaced power supply
- replaced HDD with BlueSCSI
- replaced display cable
- recapped display
- glued loose trackball roller to axle
- replaced keyboard
- replaced PRAM battery

the way this software works is you have patterns which are little piano rolls. you can play these at various speeds and lengths and apply variables like transposition, note density (i think this is chance), velocity, order and some kind of time curve. plus you have "cyclic variables" which sequence accent/legato/rhythm values independently. you get six slots for different settings per variable and an x/y grid that can modulate the slot selections. pretty interesting

we can argue that the powerbook has been patched up quite a lot. and the M document as a playable parameterized meta-composition does fit my idea of a patch, even if its not the nodes-in-a-graph kind

switching from PCM to Opus, visualized
its pretty cool that AOO can change formats on the fly almost seamlessly. there is a small audible hiccup but it might just be because my PCM and Opus settings result in slightly different latencies

i have successfully enabled Opus streams in AOO :3 saves wifi bandwidth compared to PCM, at the cost of increasing the audio process CPU load on the robots from ~10% to ~20%. but this appears to be fine, still no problems running audio and motor controls at the same time
i dont hear any difference in quality either (which is expected on these lo-fi speakers)

2026-03-13 18:05:23 UTC

i would still like to handle potential xruns (which mainly come from network hiccups) better that the current hard dropouts
Opus (which i previously failed to build for armv7l, but it seems it should be possible) has some packet loss concealment stuff but idk if it works for general audio or just speech
there is also the option of taking local control momentarily. network data doesnt arrive in time -> play some cute chirps and spin the robot around in confusion. or something

2026-03-13 17:36:51 UTC

- reply

this is nice also because i can connect the control computer to the router via ethernet, slightly reducing the perils of wifi

mysteries...
1. i assumed Music Mouse would have a modem/printer port selection. seems it doesnt. so does it use MIDI Manager? it didnt complain before i installed MIDI Manager though, and after installation it does not show up in PatchBay
2. there is much talk about 1MHz being the "standard MIDI clock rate". this circuit http://www.loadsman.com/jal/midi/Macmidi.html connects a 1MHz crystal to HSKi. so i guess i might need something there. maybe i could generate the 1MHz signal on the RP2040 instead?

the button responsiveness issue maybe suggests something like the contacts inside the switch are worn out where they would touch most of the time, but pressing on the edges makes a bit of contact in a less worn out spot
