Wow, Tidal is increasing our family plan from 16,99€ to 21,99€/month - that's ~29% 🤯
They just sent an e-mail: "we *propose* changing the price, because we haven't changed it in 3 years and you love music, right?"
If I don't agree our accounts will be cancelled in less than a month.
I'd call it "holding peoples music hostage and #enshittification".
Anyone else got this? #Tidal

"...consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games.."
👆 This is how Sony PR tries to frame the ending of physical discs as something gamers want. It’s corporate gibberish and an outright lie. There are two more plausible reasons for this move.
1. There is ZERO competition in the digital Playstation games market, there simply is no other platform, not counting "codes in a box". It's a monopoly and Sony has full control over pricing. Expect Sony exclusives to cost full retail for a very long time (see Nintendo).
2. This will completely eliminate the secondary, pre-owned market for upcoming games. You can't sell or share digital games.
As an unfortunate side effect, public libraries can no longer lend future Playstation games - sorry, kids.
A sad day for gaming fans and game collectors.

@nprofile…63pg Not a platform, but you could look into ESG filtered (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and/or SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) ETF's as investment vehicles. These fonds aim to exclude problematic companies by filtering for certain criteria such as fossil industry etc. However, it's often not that easy and they may only exclude the worst offenders. And there is an argument to be made that filtering some fonds like world ETF's could defeat their purpose (diversification) - but that's personal preference.

This is really cool: Pinchflat lets you build your own YouTube offline library by automatically downloading playlists and updates. The best part? It integrates with Plex, Kodi, and #Jellyfin.
Nothing on YouTube is guaranteed to be available forever, so this is great for preserving things like language courses or channels that might be gone at some point.
Added bonus: it removes ads, can skip intros and has a few other cool options.
Setup took me less than 10min with docker compose, it's a single self-contained container. I'd recommend to set some cutoff dates and pauses between downloads.

Looking for YA book gift recommendations for a 17y old teen boy who normally doesn't read books. He liked Ready Player One but it doesn't have to be SciFi or a life-changing classic. He doesn't have a lot of time for 1000 pages tomes like LoTR or WoT, so shorter, engaging books would be preferable. Thanks #bookstodon !

@nprofile…mssx Honesty, I'd watch some gameplay first, it's hard to recommend ANY online multiplayer with PvP. That being said: it's very immersive, it's more about loot and scavenging than pvp - a bit like in Fallout4, The Division or Last of Us. The robots are no joke and you never know what happens next. One thing thats very beginner-friendly is a random free loadout, so if you use this you wont loose all your better gear. So this definitely helps. And as mentioned before, most people are chill, which is rare for the genre 😂

Only played a few hours last night and solo mode in the first few areas has been pretty chill so far - only got killed by another player once in about 20 (short) runs topside and I can't even blame them. I kinda sneaked up on them in a building in a night raid, so they probably just reacted instinctively and tossed that grenade in my general direction 😂

Warren Spector's masterpiece #DeusEx is now available as part of the Playstation Plus Classic cataloge 👏 It's one of my all-time favorites and a game that had a huge influence on Western action RPGs. For the young folks: it's like #Cyberpunk 2077 but released in 2000.
The Playstation Classic version is the emulated PS2 game which is a downgraded version of the earlier PC release. If you have a PC or Steamdeck, I highly recommend the better Steam or GoG version. It's only 0,99€ for the next 12h hours on GoG including the optional and free Revision mod which adds a number of improvements.

Just finished watching "Jason Bourne" (2016), the last and arguably worst movie in the series. It didn't age well. In 2016 apparently people still thought of "CIA intends to use a social media platform with 1.5 billion users for mass surveillance" as an evil movie plot 🤔
The technological illiteracy in this movie is painful to watch.🤯 "Use SQL to hack their database!" Which Nicky Parsons does in front of an #Atari ST and monochrome CRT with an unplugged ethernet cable to access the CIA mainframe computer.
"There's a phone in the room, I can take control of it and delete the files." That's.. not how it works. Also, what kind of highly trained agent would plug some random USB stick with all Blackops secrets into some strangers laptop connected to the internet?
Other than that, it's the same formula, car chases, flashbacks, The Asset, Bourne repeatedly knocking out Team Alpha and Bravo to uncover the past and a somewhat open ending without a satisfying conclusion to the series. 2/5 🍿

@nprofile…xlhv Well done summary 👏 It's good to see physical media is trending again among younger people. We (the gaming, music and movie fans) have been saying this for years. Keeping books, discs, cartridges, vinyl and tapes isn't just nostalgia - it really is resistance. Vs dependency on streaming services that can pull media at any moment and become more and more expensive, vs. locked platforms (Amazon) and monopol pricing (Sony PSN) and many other good reasons like appreciating the art and being able to share something 'physical" with friends and family.

@nprofile…843t Really enjoy reading about your adventure, it's inspiring. I actually started planning a 1-2, maybe 3 day hike in June. We live in a very densely populated area not nearly as beautiful as Oregon, so the long distance trails will have to wait and need more planning and travelling to Scandinavia. Norway and Sweden both have some amazing trails like the Kungsleden (Kings Trail) up to 440km / 270mi) - I've meet a long distance hiker on a trip to Sweden once who's been doing (parts of) this trail every year for 30 years. Anyway, happy hiking and enjoy the rest of your hike!

I see more and more (mostly younger) people with flip phones / dumb phones on my commute but that's a very inconvenient lifestyle choice - we are too dependent on apps for public transport, tickets, identification, 2FA, messenger, work/school schedules or even entrance to work or gym via Bluetooth key systems 🤔

Amazon changed the format after that and I haven't bought any new ebooks on Amazon since then, so I can't say if it's still possible. It's a game of cat and mouse. Yes, for Calibre to work with your existing Kindle ebooks you would need the serial number of a Kindle registered to your Amazon account. 🎥 Tonight's movie was Kenji Mizoguchi’s “Ugetsu” (1953), following a recommendation from Hideo Kojima's Closet Picks. It's both a fable and a ghost story and a masterclass in cinematography in beautiful black and white and slow camera movements. The acting is superb and theatrical. The sound design (like cannons and gunfire at the beginning for a sense of urgency, threat and immediate danger) and the music really helps creating that eerie atmosphere in certain other scenes. Well worth a watch.

🇯🇵 Started watching Terrace House - テラスハウス last night, mostly for natural #Japanese listening comprehension practice. I have never watched a reality show in my life in any language but this is actually quite good. The introductions are fairly easy to understand even for beginners, there are many repeating, common phrases.
Interesting to see that there is still a lot of bowing, nodding and よろしくおねがいします involved after at least 4 glasses of wine and considering these young people are as cool as it gets (a pro surfer, art student/teacher, model, idol band singer, aspiring fire fighter, 'normal' girl). Curious how they'll get along, there are about a hundred 24min episodes, so we'll see 😄

Sony should have fired the whole senior management instead of half the staff.

2025-02-20 12:27:08 UTC

I always loved Destiny, but these new statements about toxic 'frat boy' company culture at #Bungie are seriously fucked up.
"Bungie maintained an email channel that shared lewd and semi-pornographic content to the entire studio. Those images were occasionally shared on a projector at studio events;"
"For many years, Bungie had a ... [gross, sexist]... "knighting" ceremony for long-time employees... in front of the entire studio.;"
"One of Bungie's founding members made frequent sexist and racist comments in group settings. At least one Bungie employee frequently exposed himself in the office.."
And these are not even the worst bits. Ex-Bungie Director Chris Barrett is basically using "but.. everyone did it" as his defense for his own creepy behaviour towards women and employees.
The full 128-page document "Christopher Barrett v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC and Bungie, Inc." is linked in the post below:

@nprofile…90wk This can't be overstated. I'm not ashamed to admit that I almost fell for a clever phishing attempt once while in a hurry and in the gym and I did let my guard down for a second. And I'm an IT guy with 20y of experience and an even older interest in cybersecurity.
People will mock Cuban, but what happened is completely human and can happen to anyone, especially vulnerable people or just regular people who have never heard of spoofing or social engineering. We can't rely on human resilience, we need better precautions - but certainly not Google or Apple Ai scanners.

Please note, you may have to edit the line starting with "@match" with the Amazon domain in your country instead of .com

2025-02-19 13:40:36 UTC

You've probably heard of it by now: Amazon will prevent downloading your ebooks via USB transfer for offline use in 7 days (Febr. 26th). This handy browser skript will help you download your library in batches of 25 at a time instead of having to manually click and download _every_single_ ebook. You don't need any programming knowledge, just this script by Chris Hollindale (not me) and the browser extension Tampermonkey.
https://github.com/chrishol/greasemonkey-scripts/blob/main/download-all-kindle-books.js
Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tampermonkey/
Chrome https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/tampermonkey/
But why should you download your ebooks to your own computer? Many people bought a Kindle to read books offline in the first place. Or you use Linux and can't or don't want to "just use the Kindle app". Or your Kindle is old and doesn't have Wifi. Or you may want to use a Kobo or another reader in the future. And last but not least - Amazon has removed ebooks from users Kindle devices in the past (including a version of Orwell's 1984 - of all books 🙄 ).

He's reacting and commenting on world politics and whatever comes to his mind - and not in an intelligent way to put it mildly 🤔 Haven't watched his stuff in ages but he showed up in my stream because he played the Monster Hunter Wilds beta. Anyway, hope this "Don't show me this BS ever again" actually works.

@nprofile…yxlk I love how he picked all these "lesser known (to the general audience)" Japanese movies. He's usually known for his love for movies from the West and he took a lot of inspiration from watching foreign movies as a kid (see the save game movie comments in MGS) and the MGS series in general.

2025-02-17 19:31:37 UTC

If you are interested in #Japanese #movies, check out Hideo Kojima’s Criterion Closet Picks - he is a life-long movie buff and expert on Japanese cinema and recommends some of his favorites.
"I'd especially love it if the younger people out there go and check out these brilliant Japanese films."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUou0rghddc
Here are his recommendations if you don't have time to watch this. (It's worth the 5min, he explains why he loves these films and his enthusiasm is infectious.)
- High and Low (1963) - Akira Kurosawa
- Late Spring (1949) - Yasujirō Ozu
- Tokyo Twilight - Yasujirō Ozu
- Ugetsu (1953) - Kenji Mizoguchi
- Kwaidan (1964) - Masaki Kobayashi
- Harakiri (1962) - Masaki Kobayashi
- Jigoku (1960) - Nobuo Nakagawa
- Onibaba (1964) - Kaneto Shindō
- Woman in the Dunes (1964) - Hiroshi Teshigahara
Interesting and new to me: he explains many of these 50-60s Japanese movies are not available or hard to find in Japan and as a result many young people in Japan don't know these movies.

Adding meaningful alt-text is not only important for everyone using a screenreader and an essential #inclusion and #accessibility requirement. Alt-text is also searchable and used by filters. People who prefer to filter certain people and topics for mental health and other reasons can't filter memes or images without it. Please use alt-text and cw generously 🙏
Added bonus: with added alt-text you can find images in your own posts with "from:me" and people are more likely to boost your posts.

The gunlance feels just amazing in #monsterhunterwilds (beta) - even better than in World or Rise. Super powerful, great flow, strong defense with some new guard moves. It's fairly easy to learn and to get into (but still hard to master) and would make a great starting weapon. Easily one of my favorites in Wilds so far.

@nprofile…utrj I'm using Calibre too to send my ebooks to an old Kindle. This is only for Kindle (and former Comixology) purchases. You can still sideload from Calibre or USB. I doubt Amazon can prohibit sideloading (both technically and legally), they still have to support older devices and epub files, at least in theory. But my next reader won't be a Kindle that's for sure.

2025-02-14 08:18:03 UTC

You can find your ebooks in your Amazon account in "content library". Select "more actions", then "Download and Transfer via USB". You'll have to select a registered Kindle device - but a Kindle DOES NOT have to be connected in via USB. It only needs to be registered to your account. You can still download files directly to your hard drive (until February 26th).

2025-02-14 08:00:50 UTC

Heads-up: Amazon is removing the USB download option very soon on February 26th. I strongly recommend to download your ebooks and comic books now. Especially when you are using an older reader, a Linux desktop (there is no Kindle app) or any Non-Kindle readers.
Consider purchasing your future ebooks elsewhere. You can support your local library by getting a library card (and tons of free books, they have ebooks too).

You heard it right, I beat Magnamalo in #MonsterHunter Rise 😄 Still a worthy boss battle, he certainly got my pulse racing. I'm so hyped for Wilds that I had to replay Rise on PC to get back into the game. I've been rushing through the main game to get to the Sunbreak DLC which I still haven't played yet. This should keep me busy until release. The main scenario took me ~10h and was smooth sailing thanks to the Defender weapons and Black Belt armor sets (which is intended as easy catch-up method).

@nprofile…qkcr I hope we will see a remaster or remake one day. Underrated gem. I've got this lovely Square Enix Piggyback game guide with maps, walkthrough and a ton of tables and combinations. If someone is seeing this and wondering why the artwork and characters seem so familiar - game producer Yasumi Matsuno later created the world of #FFXII and the Ivalice alliance raid in #FFXIV Stormblood.
Jan Rosenkrantz and Sean Hardin look very much like Balthier and Basch 5 years later, Fran and Callo Melrose have a similiar style and Joshua looks like Larsa or young Joshua Rosfield in FFXVI 🤔

I'm enjoying the #monsterhunterwilds beta immensely. The gameplay is so smooth - they've removed a lot of the friction from earlier games and it's a lot more accessible for new players now. The game loop is as addictive as ever and the environments are full of surprises. I don't want to spoil anything but some randomly occurring events were just - wow 🤯 I've now tried all 14 weapons and my favorites so far were:
Charge Blade: "Such Devastation… This Was Not My Intention" 😂
SnS: combat feels so smooth, has guard, can use items during battle - what's not to like?
Gun Lance: Wanna play an indestructible tank? That's your weapon. Wyvern Fire.
Ranged: all fun and versatile, great for teams, not so sure about solo hunts.
What's gonna be your starting weapon?

@nprofile…843t Let's just hope it won't be another 3 week outage. At least we had plenty of offline games on PS2 and PS3 back then. Today's generation couldn't cope with an outage like that, the panic and distress on /r/playstation is real. Most of us are hopelessly dependent on online gaming platforms. Can't wait for the memes.
