people obsess over it far out of proportion, but yeah, they're good. Stopping off the highway in a place that's actually clean and well run, nice to hang out in and has a wide variety* of good food is a really nice change of pace

oh I know. I'm not saying I believe it'll actually work. I'm saying it's plausible that this is what Elon, Andreesen et al believe and that it's one of their goals. Like most Elon schemes it ignores a lot of steps in the critical path. It's worth talking about bc of the damage the attempt could cause along the way. The likelihood of it working is perhaps greater than the Mars plan, that's about all I can say for it 😁

imo this is the reason Tesla became an increasingly crappy wrapper around a self driving tech company. Not for the passenger cars (not that great a feature), not for robotaxis (prob not great margins really) but building up the tech to jump from those vehicles to delivery trucks. Now under Trump they'll be able to make that leap no matter how crap the driving automation is, unless it has some kind of disaster (very possible)

yes, and:
The big payout the VC/finance crowd is chasing isn't about taxis or passenger cars, but automation of delivery driving at every level. This is one of the biggest employment sectors in the country & therefore one of the biggest "efficiency" (layoff cost reduction) opportunities in the adjacent possible. I've seen estimates (that finance people seem to believe) that there's around a trillion dollars to be made by capturing and automating that business.

huge comeback for Tolkien/old school comic book style villains but with added creepy libido issues
Here's a funny SFF thing, I've read a couple good books recently with techbros in villain roles - makes sense, very of the moment - and the only problem is, accurate depictions of how ridiculous and fucked up these guys are ends up reading cartoonish on the page - even knowing it's accurate satire! A sticky wicket, that

a quote from a person with relevant expertise I know and respect can absolutely convince me to read a book I'm otherwise 50/50 on. No number of other quotes makes any difference.
If a SFF novel was loved by (for instance) Ursula LeGuin or M John Harrison I'm gonna read it. For nonfiction books I look for respected scientists or experts in that field if I'd recognize them (depends on the topic). I don't think I even parse quotes from names I don't know.

I mean, if you could describe Summer Lawns as being thematically about anything, it's women living in patriarchy, or at least that's the general interpretive take.
I frankly never listen to early Joni, or any other 60s folk at all, so I can't really speak to that. I took one pass through her early catalog once and consigned it to the very large set of "probably great music not for me"

as a lyricist her impact was twofold. She was more serious about writing from direct, internal perspectives (as opposed to writing characters, which she also did, but much less exclusively) than her peers. Simon was also one of the first to get truly introspective/honest, but that direct, revealing mode (so opposite to Dylan's layered masking) is associated with Joni. Secondly the simple fact of writing from a woman's perspective was powerful and challenging.

which, certainly, Dylan songs are in the campfire and cover song canon to an almost absurd degree, while Joni songs belong to real singers. While I never thought about it before, perhaps this is part of why I never thought of her as a folk artist even though she came from that scene. Not only did she dramatically transcend it, but her songs aren't really folk songs at all, are they? Certainly not by the 70s much less post Court.

that's the jazz influence, Mingus in particular. She went ever deeper into her signature suspended chords and unusual voicings but also in general started treating her voice as the lead instrument it was. Help Me is perhaps my single favorite vocal performance by any artist, especially the recently released acoustic demo.
I'd invert your formulation by saying almost anyone can sing Dylan and most of them can do it better than him, but very few can carry off a Joni song respectably.

did anything really unexpected jump out at you from Bowie? Stuff not part of the normal discourse?
I think of Joni as somewhere between Tolstoy and Stendhal and that's just what she did up through about Blue - went deeper and more honestly than anyone before, by far - and then the shift between there and Court & Spark elevates to a level I could only relate to maybe Miles and Trane, geniuses who produced masterworks in multiple successive and equally groundbreaking styles.

linguistic freedom and diversity are unquestionably unifying revolutionary praxis. What matters is using the appropriate lexicon and syntax for the context, which is the art and science of code switching. Privileging a subset of those contexts and their related language is a means of oppression, even when done in innocent good faith (as it often is)

I think those simple things are the things shared by many people. I know plenty of very complex adult women with broad musical taste who are fans, some of whom are ultra fans. I see it not just as "she gets what I've been through" but the fact of the giant fandom itself is a factor - the generality of the experiences is proved by how many people sing along, and that's powerful.
Plus a LOT of her fans start as kids and take the imprint so to speak. A 10 year old can grok the lyrics.

sure, this is all true. Her music and lyrics aren't even as creatively interesting as, say, Beyoncé's, who is her closest comp career wise. But they are clearly written well for her target audience, which is very large, and with whom these songs resonate powerfully. It's an extremely sincere fan relationship & one where her lyrics become central to people's lives. There's something very real there, which I guess comes from a universality of experience expressed in clear/direct terms

I understand that Mastodon has unique technical constraints, so no one reading this thread needs to explain that. I'm just saying it's an extremely desirable safety feature that competing platforms have already.

I'm familiar with a few songs, but I'd like to state for clarity that I don't like those songs, I think they are mediocre to actually bad, and under no circumstances did I love the band then or will I now. Also they seem like twats and I think in the UK they have meathead right wing associations...? That's all picked up third hand, though
Cheers to those who like them. Liking things is fun! But not everything, and for me, definitely not this

anyone got a good restaurant rec that checks all the following boxes?
- east side, downtown or inner west (not past the hills)
- nice enough for a date night but not expensive (say, under $40-50/ea without drinks). Doesn't have to be "fancy" at all, in fact laid back with good food is preferred
- I can actually get a rez this weekend
I have some in my pocket but would welcome fresh ideas

did you see that book or any of the essays by Douglas Rushkoff awhile back about the billionaire meeting he attended (as a futurist thinker) where they were discussing things like how to control their security staff post-apocalypse when they're riding it out in New Zealand or wherever? Shock collars were discussed unironically.

she was truly great. She had unbelievable vibe in person. Deeply grounded and calm seeming but with a kind of bright fire under that. I never wanted to bug her for an autograph or anything when I saw her but now I really wish I'd gotten her to sign my copy of her co-translation of the Tao Te Ching.
In my opinion as a lifelong SFF reader she is the single most important figure in the maturation of the genre into its modern, more diverse and wiser form.

once late in a long acid trip some friends and I put the film on - we were into the "melting into every soft surface" stage and it was a favorite for that. This is back in the VHS days. We went into the classic Koyaanisqatsi trance zone and after an infinity had passed we all came to the sudden, psychically shared realization that we were 2/3rds thru our *2nd* viewing - we had watched the whole thing, zoned out during the auto-rewind, and watched it again without realizing

this has been dubbed "the Tyson Zone" - when a famous person hits the point where there's no story so crazy you'd dismiss it out of hand. You might not believe it either, but you can't rule it out. Charlie Sheen is a classic Tyson Zone guy. Kanye has crossed into the Zone a few times. But this Kennedy dingbat brings a real lunatic patrician panache to it. I'm not sure he's actually any crazier than standard issue plebeian fuckery but he's def got an extra-sleazy veneer of privilege

So obviously it's time to get serious about putting a stake thru the heart of the NYT as it currently exists. Anyone have a clear image of how much of their revenue comes from the lil games they have that are so popular? the Hainish Cycle novels share a setting but not a plot through-line. The first three are perhaps slightly more related to each other but Darkness can be & usually is read cold. It is widely considered (and i agree) to be one of Ursula's masterpieces and makes a note-perfect introduction to the author.
FWIW, if you enjoy modern humane SFF with its emphasis on the intersection of psychology, relationships & society, UKLG is the key figure in developing that style.
